PAUL PLOTKIN, MD
Dr. Paul Plotkin, age 88, of Alpharetta, Georgia, formally of
Miami Beach, Florida died Thursday, July 28, 2010, at his home
after an extended illness.
Born in Chicago, Illinois on October 4, 1921, he was the son of
the Jacob and Dina Hochberg Plotkin. He was a 1937 graduate of
Manley High School in Chicago, a 1941 graduate of the University
of Illinois, and received his Medical Degree from the University
Of Illinois School Of Medicine in Chicago in 1944. He was a
veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army
as a Regimental Surgeon.
Following the war, he moved to Miami Beach, Florida where he
began an Internal Medicine Practice specializing in Cardiology,
retiring in 1988. Dr. Plotkin was a member of the American
Medical Association, The Florida State Medical Society, was a
Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami School
Medicine, a lifetime member of the University of Illinois Alumni
Association, a member of the Miami Yacht Club, Temple Emanuel of
Miami Beach, and the Men’s Club of the Temple.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a
brother, Morton Plotkin, and a grandson, Wade Phillip Sprow.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Edyth Zeigmund Plotkin of
the home, five children, son, Dr. Michael D. Plotkin, his wife,
Erica, of Olympia, Washington, and their children, Dr. Benjamin
Plotkin, his wife, Thuy, and Dr. Anna Plotkin Kitzmann, and her
husband, Dan; son, Joseph A. “Jay” Plotkin, his wife, Susan of
Woodstock, Georgia, and their daughter, Ilene Plotkin Lakin, her
husband, David, and their children, Sophie and Seth; daughter,
Gale Plotkin Sprow, her husband, Carson of Union, South
Carolina, and their sons, Abraham “Avi” Adler, his wife, Dorina,
and their daughters, Hannah and Julia, Jeremy Adler, Adam Adler
and his fiance’, Johanna Twersky; son, Norman L. Plotkin, his
wife, Lois, of Sandy Springs, Georgia, and their daughters,
Julie Plotkin and Shoshana Plotkin; son, Dr. Jacob S. Plotkin,
his wife, Dr. Ruth Ann Plotkin of Brownsville, Texas, and their
children, Ariel Plotkin and Aaron Plotkin, one brother and
sister-in-law, Bernard Plotkin and his wife, Betty of Miami
Beach, Florida; sister-in-law, Rosalyn Plotkin of Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, sister-in-law, Marilyn Zeigmund Bau, and
husband, Lawrence of Laguna Woods, California.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 1, 2010, at 10
o’clock at the Orchards of Sweet Apple clubhouse with the family
receiving friends until 12 o’clock noon. Commital services will
be held Monday, August 2, 2010, at 9:30 o’clock at the Georgia
National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. Both services will be
conducted by Rabbi Harvey Winokur, Cantor Barbara Margulis of
Temple Kehillat Chaim and Cantor Benjamin Adler of Temple
Emanuel.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request memorial

2010 at Wallace Thompson Hospital after a long illness.

Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter: Rita
Mackessy of Taylors; a son: Matthew Boulware of Buffalo; 5

2010 from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mrs. Della Smith Moss, age 64 of
251 Old Pump Station Rd., Union died Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at
Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Moss was born in Union, SC
February 21, 1946, a daughter of the late Claude Preston Smith
and Annie Belle Palmer Smith. She was a high school graduate and
attended Spartanburg Technical College to study Respiratory
Therapy. Mrs. Moss retired from Timken and had been a home
health caregiver for many years. She was a member of Bethlehem
United Methodist Church and was first married to the late Frank
Parkins.
Surviving are a daugher, Lori Deal
of the home; five grandchildren: Courtney Parker and Caleb Deal
both of the home, Mitchell Parkins, Kristin P. Robinson and Mary
Benvenuti; three great-grandchildren; three sisters: Hazel
Gregory, Pearl Inman and Linda Thomas and husband Preston; four
brothers: Carl Smith and wife Thelma, Monroe Smith and wife
Nancy, Gilbert Smith, Sr and Kenneth Smith all of Union; special
friends: Jimmy Deal of Lockhart and T.J. Roberts of the home.
Mrs. Moss was predeceased by a son, Leslie Dale Parkins and
three brothers: Harold Smith, L.J. Smith and William Charles
Smith.

11:00 AM Friday, July 23, 2010 at Bethlehem United Methodist
Church conducted by Rev. Christopher Green, Rev. Scott Cobb and
Rev. Alan Gregory. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

receive friends this evening. The family will also receive
friends at the church immediately following the service and also
at their respective homes.

passed away, Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.
Mrs. O'Shields was born in Union,
February 22, 1927, a daughter of the late Joseph Pinckney Parham
and Minnie Knighton Parham. She was a homemaker and a member of
Crestview Baptist Church, formerly Westside Baptist Church. Mrs.
O'Shields was active in her church as long as her health
permitted. She was the last surviving member of her immediate
family of twelve children.
Survivig are two daughter: Patsy
O. McNeace and husband Ronnie, Donna O. Palmer, widow of Roy F.
Palmer; one son: Dr. Daniel L. O'Shields and wife Kathy all of
Union; 8 grandchildren: Janet M. Ashmore, Michael O'Shields,
Philip O'Shields, James McNeace, Rodney McNeace, Patrick McNeace,
Stuart Palmer and Matthew Palmer; 14 great-grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robert William Hinkle, age 81,
of 320 South Mountain St. Union, SC died Wednesday, July 14,
2010 at Mary Black Hospital.
Mr. Hinkle was born in Indiana
June 19, 1929, a son of the late James Hinkle Sr. and Mattie
Douglass Hinkle Stede. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines
having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hinkle was a
member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and retired from the
Torrington Company.
Survivors are two daughters:
Cheryl Hinkle Ward and husband Robert of Union, and Denise
Hinkle Beard of GA; four sisters: Betty Krebs, Beverly McBeth,

Services. Mr. Keisler was of the Baptist Faith.

cosmotologist and formerly worked at United Merchants – Union

Anchor, SC August 30, 1940, a son of the late Lester Floyd
Davis, Sr and Virginia Dickerson Davis. He was a retired Veteran
of the US Navy having served in the Cuban Crisis and also
retired from the City of Union Waterworks Department. Mr. Davis
was a member of Union Church of God.
Surviving in addition to his wife
of fifty years are three sons: Lester Wayne Davis of Union,
Timothy Mark Davis of Pauline and Corey Ragan Davis and wife
Andrea of Union; seven grandchildren: Christinia Davis, Kelsey
Davis, Austin Davis both of Farmington, New Mexico, Dillon
Davis, Amber Davis both of Pauline, Cole Davis and Bailey Davis
both of Union; two sisters: Shirley D. Langston and husband
Callie of Union and Meridth Ann Stone of Laurens; a brother,
Lester Floyd “LF” Davis of Simpsonville; six nieces; three

Mrs. Middlebrooks was born in Buncombe County, NC May 24, 1913, a daughter
of the late Zeb Rhymer and Ella Alexander Rhymer. She was
retired from Milliken & Company- Monarch Plant. Mrs.
Middlebrooks was the oldest living member of Mon Aetna Baptist
Church where she was faithfully active in church life as long as
her health permitted and was a member of Anne Hinkle Sunday
School Class.
Surviving are three daughters: Jane M.
Austin and husband James, Joyce M. Vanderford and husband
Charles A. all of Union and Myra Middlebrooks of the home; a
brother, Gay Rhymer and wife Virginia of Union; four
grandchildren: Darrell Austin and wife Kelly of Chapin, Mark
Austin and wife Robin of W. Columbia, Vince Vanderford and wife
Beth of Moore and Charla McClure and husband Allen of Union and
nine great-grandchildren: Grayson Austin, Olivia Austin, Chase

Albright Vaughn. She was a graduate of Union High School and an

permitted. Mrs. Gregory retired after twenty-eight years of
service at Union Federal Savings and Loan, which is currently
Provident Community Bank.

SC., December 8, 1949, a son of the late Richard Harris Jenkins
and Mae Thomas Jenkins. He was a graduate of Union High School
and Clemson University. Mr. Jenkins was a member of Cane Creek
Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Sunday
School Superintendent. He was presently self employed as a
textile agent with Randy Jenkins and Associates. Mr. Jenkins
previously served as Vice President of Manufacturing of Uniblend
Spinners in Union and Conway, S.C. He also worked at Carlisle
Finishing as a shift supervisor. Mr. Jenkins was a past member
of the Union County School Board and the SC School Boards
Association. He was a member of the Union Jaycees and helped to
organize the Miss Union Beauty Pageant. He was a former member
of the B.P.O. Elks and the Union County Recreation Dept.
Committee. Mr. Jenkins was a former Chairman of the Union County
Republican Party.
Surviving in addition to his wife
are a son: Travis Baker Jenkins (Ashley) of Pacolet; two
sisters: Elizabeth Jenkins Vaughan (Tony) of Rock Hill and Rita
Jenkins Vanderford (Stanley) of Union; one brother: Ellis Wayne
Jenkins (Nanette) of Carlisle; numerous nieces and nephews and
three very special pets: Bo, Luke and Daisy. Mr. Jenkins was
predeceased by two brothers: Richard Eugene Jenkins and Ralph
Thomas Jenkins.
Funeral services will be held
11:00 AM Monday, July 12, 2010 at Cane Creek Presbyterian Church
conducted by Rev. Robert Gant. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Brian
Vaughan, Gene Jenkins, Kevin Vanderford, David Jenkins, Preston
Thomas, and Bill Mabry. Present and former Elders of Cane Creek
Presbyterian Church are asked to serve as the honorary escort.
The family will receive friends
immediately following the service at the church.

Mrs. Valerie Varner Blitchington,
age 84, wife of Jesse Blitchington, Sr of 318 Varner Rd., Union,
SC died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.
Mrs. Blitchington was born in
Union, SC September 4, 1925, a daughter of the late Mige Varner
and Fugie Roark Varner. She was a homemaker and a faithful
member of Fairview Baptist Church where she was a member of the
Senior Ladies Sunday School Class.
Surviving in addition to her
husband are a daughter, Mary Lawson and husband Wendell of
Union; a son, Jesse Blitchington, Jr of the home; eight sisters:
Mary Sox of Lexington, Vera Beck, Carol Step both of N. Augusta,
Lillian Thompson and husband Fred of Aiken, Faith Edland and
husband Lloyd of Greer, Evelyn Brown and husband Harold, Lillie
Kirby and husband Ron and Linda Bishop and husband Lindsey all
of Union; a brother, Robert Varner of Union; twenty nieces and
nephews. Mrs. Blitchington was predeceased by a sister, Annie
Grace Varner.
Funeral services will be held 3:00
PM Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted
by Rev. David Lewis and Rev. Guy Langston. Burial will be in the
church cemetery.

Mrs. Mavis Lambert Brock, age 82,
wife of Travis Hampton Brock of 881 Littlejohn Rd., Jonesville,
SC died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Brock was born in Buffalo, SC
May 7, 1928, a daughter of the late George Lambert and Nannie
Mae Lawson Lambert. She was a member of Welcome Baptist Church
where she was active as long as her health permitted and was the
last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Brock was a
devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Surviving in addition to her
husband are three daughters: Jill Moss of the home, Janice Knox
and husband Ricky and Susan Kaufholz and husband Jerry all of
Union; a son, Melvin Brock and wife Dana of McCormick, SC; five
grandchildren: Brad Smith, Lee Smith, Blake Knox, Stacey Owens
and Kevin Kaufholz and four great-grandchildren: Dalton Meng,
Peyton Knox, Hayden Knox and Logan Owens. Mrs. Brock was
predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

PM Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted
by Rev. Robert Jarvis and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in
Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Paul F. Stewart, age 82, of
201 Davis St., Union, widower of Deloris Sutton Stewart, passed
away, Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Regional Hospice Home in
Spartanburg.
Mr. Stewart was born in the
Sedelia community of Union Co., June 16, 1928, a son of the late
Dalton F. Stewart and Eloise Estes Stewart. He retired after 42
years from Milliken Co. and was retired from the South Carolina
National Guard, Union Unit. Mr. Stewart was a member of
Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons: Marion J.
Stewart and wife Jean and Paul C. “Chris” Stewart and wife Donna
all of Union; one grand-daughter: Samantha Stewart of Union; two
sisters: Nannie Lou Nance of Union and Sara Belue of Rock Hill.
Mr. Stewart was predeceased by two sisters, Myrtle Ferguson and
Jumelle Estes and two brothers: Fred Stewart and Guy Stewart.
Graveside services will be held
11:00 AM Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Union Memorial Gardens
conducted by Rev. Jim Palmer and Rev. Robert Chapman. Visitation
will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday evening at the S.R.

Jay Roy Keasler

Mr. Jay Roy Keasler, age 82, of
610 Toney Rd., Union, SC, widower of Ada “Patt” Johnson Keasler
died Monday, July 5, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Mr. Keasler was born in Union
County, SC February 27, 1928, a son of the late Eugene Keasler
and Janie Keasler. He retired from United Merchants- Union Plant
and was Veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean
Conflict.
Surviving are a daughter, Tanya
LuLu Sanford; two sons: Willard “Snowball” Hucks and Wayne Hucks
all of Union; four sisters; a brother; five grandchildren: Chris
Hucks, Michael Sanford, Mr. & Mrs. Teddy Mull, Willard “Trey”
Hucks, III and Heidi Dietz and six great-grandchildren. Mr.
Keasler was predeceased by a son, Tommy Hucks.
Graveside services will be held
2:00 PM Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by
Rev. Tommy Mann.

Mrs. Geraldine Liner Roark, age
78, formerly of Buffalo, widow of George William Roark, passed
away, Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a
period of declining health.
Mrs. Roark was born in Union,
December 25, 1931, a daughter of the late Clay and Dora Malone
Liner. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was a
homemaker.
Surviving are a son William Steve
Roark and wife Betty of Buffalo; a sister; Peggy Shetley and
husband A.J. Jr. of Union; two grandchildren: Tara Roark Shetley
and husband David and William Adam Roark and fiancee Ashley
Mason; two great-grandchildren: Polly Sheltley and Mahlon
Shetley; three step-grandchildren: Grant Shetley, Whitney
Shetley, and Jarrod Shetley. Mrs. Roark was predeceased by a
son, Nicky Dewayne Roark and a number of sisters and brothers.

11:00 AM Friday, July 2, 2010 at Bogansville United Methodist
Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson. Visitation will be held
at the graveside after the services.

Mr. Jimmy W. Alman, age 63 of
Newark, DE, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, June 25,
2010.
Born in Union, SC, on November 11,
1946, Mr. Alman was the son of the late James B. and Margaret
Evans Alman. He was a graduate of Union High School and later
attended Baptist College of Charleston now Charleston Southern
University. Mr. Alman proudly served his country in the US Navy
for 25 years. After his retirement from the military, he
accepted a position with Batta Environmental Associates, where
he worked as an environmental inspector. A devout Christian, he
was an active member of Pleasantville Baptist Church in New
Castle, DE.
In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janice Going Alman in
2008. He is survived by a son: Robert C. Alman; a daughter:
Rebecca Jane Levan both of Delaware; two sisters: Cathy Parker
and husband Rusty and Patsy Gibson all of Union; three brothers:
Dennis Alman, James Ronnie Alman and Gerald Alman all of Union
and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 1:00
PM Monday, July 5, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel
conducted by Rev. Shep Bevis. Burial will be in Union Memorial
Gardens with Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 12:00
until 1:00 PM Monday prior to the service in the chapel. A
funeral service was held Friday, July 2, 2010, at Pleasantville
Baptist Church in New Castle.
