Mrs. Mary Garner Anderson, age 72, wife of Thomas G. Anderson of Boiling Springs, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Anderson was born in Union Co., February 23, 1947, a daughter of the late Emmett and Mary Lee Blackwood Garner. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Cecil’s Business College. She continued her education to become a nationally certified licensed massage therapist.

Mrs. Anderson grew up in the Pea Ridge community of Union Co., where she attended Mt. Joy Baptist Church. She was also an active supporter of local humane societies and animal rescues.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a sister, Emily Gayle G. Parks and husband Jim of Union; a nephew, Jerry Steve Parks and her best friend, Mary Ann Jackson of Gainesville, GA. Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by a sister, Patsy L. Housholder.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Joyce Murphy.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Mary Elizabeth Feltwell
Jonesville, S.C.


Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Moss Feltwell, age 85, of 140 B St., Jonesville, widow of Ernest E. Feltwell, Sr., passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Feltwell was born in Jonesville, November 10, 1933, a daughter of the late Rufus and Lula Mae Reynolds Moss. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a retired cosmetologist. Mrs. Feltwell had formerly been employed with Greenleaf in Union. She was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church where she was a member of the Happy Hearts Club. Mrs. Feltwell was the last surviving member of her immediately family.

Surviving are two daughters, Emmie Ogle and Arlene Wynn and husband Roger all of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Brandy Garner and husband Kevin, Dale Wynn and wife Kelly and Robert Ogle and girlfriend, Katie Garner; eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Logan, Chase, Colton, Maddie, Dixie, Wyatt and Daisey; special friends, Mamie Robinson, Delores Hill and Louise Rider; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Feltwell was predeceased by a son, Ernest E. Feltwell, Jr. and two brothers, Jimmy Moss and Ray Moss.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Scott Cannon. Burial will be at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Dale Wynn, Robert Ogle, Kevin Garner, D.J. Long, Nick Simmons and Brandon Johnson.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel, 145 Hames Ave., Jonesville.

Perry Lewis Ford, Sr.

Mr. Perry Lewis Ford, Sr., age 83, of 116 Jennings Circle, Buffalo, passed away Friday, September 27, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Ford was born in Union Co., January 8, 1936, a son of the late D.A. Ford and Bunia Stapleton Ford. He was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and had also worked in construction and security after retirement. Mr. Ford was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Buffalo.

Surviving are three sons, Perry Lewis Ford, Jr., Steven A. Ford and wife Cathy and Craig F. Ford all of Buffalo, two sisters, Nettie Mae Ford and Millie Ford both of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Lourie Ann Watson and husband Joshua Kelvin, Tiffany M. Ford and fiancé, Andrew Hall, Dawny Madden and Katy Outen and husband Travis; three great-grandchildren, Sadie Claire Outen, Rachel Watson and Taylor Watson and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Ford was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Ford and two brothers, J.I. Ford and William Ford.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Monday, September 30, 2019 at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens

Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at the home of his son, Steven and Cathy Ford, 526 Linersville Rd., Buffalo and also from 3:00 until 4:00 PM Monday at the church prior to the services.


Francis E. Vaughan
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Francis Earl “Buddy” Vaughan, age 74, of Rogerstown Rd., Jonesville, SC, widower of Malinda Kay Gowan Vaughan passed away Friday, September 27, 2019.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Union, April 7, 1945, a son of the late John Earl Vaughan and Ernestine McBride Vaughan. He was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church. Mr. Vaughan was also a member of the Prudence Masonic Lodge #139 of Jonesville.

Surviving are a daughter, Angela Knighton and husband Dwain of Gaffney; a sister, Karen Whitehead and husband Charles of Union; a sister-in-law, Gay Vaughan of Myrtle Beach; a brother-in-law, Dean Alexander of Waco, TX; three grandchildren, Randy Dale Harmon, Jr. and wife Tracy, Shannon Byars and husband Matthew, and Malinda “Mindy” Lamb and husband Jeff; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Vaughan was predeceased by a sister, Vicki Alexander and a brother, Stanley Vaughan.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Jonathan Vaughan. Burial with Masonic Rites will be at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Carlton Suttles, Pat Kerr, Harold Gault, Jeff Lamb, Randy D. Harmon, Jr. and Steve Beheler.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the chapel prior to the services.

Catherine V. Smith

Mrs. Catherine V. Smith, age 82, of Union, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. 

Mrs. Smith was born June 20, 1937 in Union, a daughter of the late Lucas Carson Varner and Louise Bobo Varner.  She was a 1955 graduate of Union High School.  Mrs. Smith retired after over 40 years from United Merchants Buffalo Plant and later worked for Arthur State Bank—Plaza Branch in Union.  She was a member of Putman Baptist Church, however she attended Buffalo Baptist Church where she was active with the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, Patchwork Quilters Group, and the Twisted Stitcher’s Crochet Club.  Mrs. Smith also Supervised the Umpires of the Union County Recreation Department.  She was active with the Union County Fair Association, a poll worker with the Union County Voter Registration Office, and the Clemson Extension where she taught classes in sewing and cooking.  Mrs. Smith enjoyed quilting, playing piano, and traveling.

Surviving are two children, Cathy Poole and husband James of Buffalo and Sammy Smith of Union; five grandchildren, Erica Haney, Matthew Haney, Holly Smith, Trey Smith and wife, Ivy, and Katie McCutcheon and husband Corey; four great-grandchildren, Madison Haney, Lucas Haney, Bella Walker, and Giovanni Gentry; great-grand fur babies, Bruno, Jace, and Asher; and special friends, Betty Stevens, Sharon Stevens, and Gail Johnson.  She was predeceased by her longtime companion J.R. Putnam.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, September 27, 2019 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Michael Bell, Rev. Doug Estes, and Rev. Tommy Mann.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Smith, Robbie Gentry, Kevin Morrow, Ricky Harris, Tommy Petty, and Tim Mitchell.  The following are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort, the Patchwork Quilter’s Club, Willing Workers Sunday School Class, Mike and Cheryl Moss, Raymond and Jo Ellen Addis, and “Speedy” and Anita Ward.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Robert “Squirrel Head” Caldwell
Union, SC


Mr. Robert Murmon “Squirrel Head” Caldwell, age 90 of 538 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, widower of Vera Carter Caldwell, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mr. Caldwell was born in Union, SC April 17, 1929, a son of the late Fred P. Caldwell and Elsie Foster Caldwell. He retired from McCloud Steel Mill, Detroit, MI and had also worked with Lockhart Mills. Mr. Caldwell attended Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Genelle Alexander of the home and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Lockhart Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Louie Franklin Hyatt
Putman Community


Mr. Louie Franklin Hyatt, age 94, widower of Erlene Gist Hyatt, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 22, 2019.

Mr. Hyatt was born in Union, SC July 16, 1925, a son of the late Jesse Hyatt and Lizzie Mae Lamb Hyatt. He retired from Union County Schools as Maintenance Supervisor and previously owned and operated his own construction company. Mr. Hyatt was a lifetime member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where he was a member of Freida Fuller Sunday School Class. He was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II. Mr. Hyatt loved his family, home, community and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Lu Anne Martin and husband Lon of Clemson and a number of special nieces and nephews. Mr. Hyatt was predeceased by a daughter, Connie Lou Hyatt.

A celebration of life service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Don Alexander. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Members of Freida Fuller Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Tuesday in the church prior to the service.

The family would like to say a special thank you to all caregivers for their love and care of Mr. Hyatt.

Ms. Brandi Helton Boughman, age 40 of 104 Churchill Street, Union, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019.

Ms. Boughman was born in Spartanburg, SC February 22, 1979, a daughter of the late E.W. “Jackie” Helton, III and Vicki Cobb McCully of Union. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church and had attended Union High School.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Alexis Nicole McGowan; a son, Ayden Christian Boughman; a sister, Michelle Helton; the father of Alexis and Ayden, Jerry Boughman all of Union; three uncles: Raymond E. Cobb of Columbia, Steve Cobb and wife Becky and Scott Cobb and wife Rhonda all of Union; seven cousins: Will, Sarah, and Sophia Cobb all of Union, Michael, Betsy, Alleigh, and Mason Cobb all of Carlisle. Ms. Boughman was also predeceased by her grandparents, Raymond and Gail Cobb.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb and Rev. Shannon Faulkner.

Visitation will be held 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM Tuesday in the chapel prior to the service.

Billy Joe Clark

Mr. Billy Joe Clark, age 65, formerly of Rogerstown Rd., Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Clark was born in Union, November 8, 1953, a son of the late William Hicks Clark and Ethel Griffin Clark. He was formerly a residential painter and attended Jonesville Church of God.

Surviving are a daughter, Carly Clark of Gaffney; a son, Brandon Clark of Pacolet; a sister, Margaret Ann Clark Jimmerson and husband Lynn of Inman; a brother, Boyd Clark of Jonesville; four grandchildren, Tristian Clark, Cailey Fite, Grayson Fite and Braxlen Fite. Mr. Clark was predeceased by two sisters, Elnora C. Garner and Betty C. Bogan and three brothers, Wade Clark, Hames Clark and Lewis Clark.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday at the chapel prior to the service.

Dr. Richard A. Baldwin
Union, S.C.


Dr. Richard A. Baldwin, age 71, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Heartland of Union.

Dr. Baldwin was born in Union, September 11, 1948, a son of the late Edward and Edna Ruth Baldwin. He was a graduate of Union High School and received his PhD in Education from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Baldwin was a teacher for over 30 years and had served as Assistant Superintendent of Personnel for Union County until 1997. He also served as Superintendent of Dorchester Co. School District 4 and was Principal of Jonesville High School from 2002 until 2004. Dr. Baldwin also as Math Coordinator at Whitlock Junior High School in Spartanburg. He declared his life to improving the education of the children of South Carolina. Dr. Baldwin was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Patrick Baldwin and wife Ying W. Baldwin; a grandson, Aiden Baldwin; one sister, Ann Thompson and husband Bob of Columbia and a brother, Charles Baldwin and wife Cindy of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mike Bell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00PM Saturday at the church prior to the services.

Arthur Alexander, Jr.

Mr. Arthur Alexander, Jr. age 85, husband of Mildred Stepp Alexander, of 223 S. Boyce St., passed away September 19, 2019 at Heartland of Union.

Mr. Alexander was born September 15, 1934 in Union, a son of the late Arthur Alexander, Sr. and Onie Alexander.  He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Torrington and Company. Mr. Alexander was first married to the late Shirley Hawkins Alexander.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Deborah Varnado of Union and Donna Sumner and husband Mark of Abbeville; five grandchildren, Marcus Varnado, Jr., Amanda V. Davis, Melisa V. Murphy, Brittany Sumner, and Megan S. Gilmer; five great-grandchildren, Dylan Davis, Hayden Murphy, Colt Murphy, Lyla Murphy, and Breanna Davis; four brothers, Frank Alexander, Roy Alexander, Johnny Alexander, and Harold Dean Alexander; and his beloved dog, Snuggles.  He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Calvert and Ruby Plemmons.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, September 20, 2019 at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tommy Vaughn. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the services.

Mrs. Rhonda O’Dell Smith, age 57, formerly of Union, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Inverness in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Smith was born in Union, March 20, 1962, a daughter of Zora Wright O’Dell of Buffalo and the late Grady O’Dell. She was a 1980 graduate of Union High School and attended USC-Union. She was a dance instructor for many years with the Dance Academy and later with Ultimate Rhythm of Union. Mrs. Smith was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Holly Smith of Lockhart and a son, Trey Smith and wife Ivy of Augusta, GA; a granddaughter, Bella Walker of Forest City, NC; a grandson, Giovanni Gentry of Lockhart; a sister, Robynne Burress and husband Steve; a brother, Ricky O’Dell and wife Debra all of Buffalo; nieces and nephews: Megan O’Dell, Cody O’Dell, Blake Burress, David Burress, Erica Haney, Katie McCutcheon and Matthew Haney and a special cousin, Karen Fowler. She is also survived by a special friend, Caroline Gossett who was “Thelma” to Rhonda’s “Louise”.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Miriam Mick and Rev. Richard Lewis.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Blake Burress, David Burress, Cody O’Dell, Caleb Thompson, Erik Marvin, and Tim Mitchell.  The Nurses and Staff Inverness of Spartanburg are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Inverness along with Beth Lewis, Deanna Heatherly, Susan Henson, Rebecca Lynn Woods, and Karen Fowler for their love and care during her illness.

Mrs. Kendra Anne Revis, age 64 of 504 Browns Creek Church Rd., Union, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Revis was born April 23, 1955 in Union, a daughter of the late Lawrence Dewey Revis and Gladys Horne Revis.  She was retired from Conso as a Production Supervisor and most recently worked at USC-Union in Student Affairs.  Mrs. Revis was a faithful member of Browns Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother Larry Revis of Union and numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Browns Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mike Bell and Rev. John Lee.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

Active pallbearers will be Jake Wilburn, Dennis Horne, Craig Horne, Kenny Horne, Bird Ivey, and Shannon McMakin.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 until 1:00 PM prior to the services at the church.

Mrs. Hazel Walton Mills, age 80, wife of Benjamin Mills of 214 Williford Road, Union, passed away Monday, September 16, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Mills was born October 23, 1938 in Union a daughter of the late Andrew “Jack” Walton and Nellie Williford Walton.  She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken & Company.  Mrs. Mills was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She was first married to the late J.D. Nix.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Marlene Mayfield of Spartanburg and Donna Floyd of Union; two sons, Dennis Nix and wife Tina and Rickey Mills all of Union; a brother, Jerry Walton and wife Christine of Union; four grandchildren, Nikki Mills, Taylor Mills, Benji Nix and wife Colleen and Pamela Floyd;  four great-grandchildren, Chelsey Nix, Autumn Nix, Collin Mills, and Aerial Mills; one great-grandson, Blaine Floyd reared in the home; a special friend Betty Farr and her beloved pet of 17 years, Craig .  She was predeceased by a sister, Doretha White and a brother, Jackie Walton. 

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ross Wilson and Rev. Guy Langston.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank Hospice Care of South Carolina, Ann and Charlene, the staff of Spartanburg Regional Hospital System and Home Care Services, Nicki Ivey, Darlene Howell, Bobby Butt for their care of Mrs. Mills during her illness.

Robert C. Henestofel

Mr. Robert Carl “Bobby” Henestofel, age 72, of 141 Oak Grove Rd., Union, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Henestofel was born in Columbus, OH, June 12, 1947, a son of the late Richard Thomas Henestofel, Sr. and Mary Elaine Poignon Henestofel. He was a retired auto mechanic and had attended The Ohio State University. Mr. Henestofel was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Vietnam War.  He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion and was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Henestofel enjoyed fishing and helping others.

Surviving are two sisters, Rita H. Grant of Hamilton, OH and Ruth H. Wallace with whom he made his home in Union and one brother, Raymond P. Henestofel of Chillicothe, OH. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews including Cassandra Hodge, Heather Higgins and Jeremy Toth, whom he helped raise, and several great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Thomas Henestofel, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 28, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Chaplain Martha Toney.

The family will receive friends after the service at the home, 141 Oak Grove Rd., Lot 7, Union.

Carolyn Diane Thomas Edwards Lancaster

Mrs. Carolyn Diane Thomas Edwards Lancaster, age 72, wife of Ellis Lancaster, of 296 Bailey Town Rd., Union, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Lancaster was born May 23, 1947 in Clinton, a daughter of the late Alton Adolphus Thomas and Rosa Lee Knox Thomas.  She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where she had previously been a choir member.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four sons, Christopher Todd Edwards and wife Jessie, Harry Douglas Edwards, Jr., Joshua Shane Edwards, and Ellis Wayne Lancaster all of Union; a daughter, Amanda Campbell and husband David of Union; three sisters, Joetta Edwards and husband Thomas of Union, Loretta Edwards and husband Gene, and Felicia Dawn Ross all of Union; one brother Mark Thomas of Union; fifteen grandchildren, Payton Elizabeth Edwards, Hannah Marie Hill, Brianna Shea Hill, MaKayla Ann Edwards, Tiffany Scott Edwards, Adolphus Scott Edwards, Jr.  Cecily Paige Edwards, Amanda Sheryl Lynn Edwards, Harry Douglas Edwards, III, Kymberly Hope Moore, Kristin Bailey Lancaster, Payton Nikole Lancaster, Raelyn Alysa Campbell, and Ryker Vance Campbell; and five great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a son Adolphus Scott Edwards and a sister, Doris Hicks.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ross Wilson and Rev. Ricky Dean Lancaster.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Lancaster’s Nephews.   Hospice Care of South Carolina is asked to serve as the honorary escort. 

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Betty Jean Blackwood, 86, widow of Tom Blackwood, formerly of 1236 Gaffney Highway, Jonesville, SC, passed away after an extended illness.

Mrs. Blackwood was born on July 25, 1933, the daughter of the late John J. and Bertha Ammons Stepp. She was retired from Union County Schools and was an active member of Gilead Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. Mrs. Blackwood was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Union County Senior Citizens, and a was graduate of Jonesville High School. Mrs. Blackwood was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Jean Brewington of Spartanburg, Kaye and Bill Jamison of Prosperity, Dr. Bobbi Siefert, of Greenville; a son and daughter in-law, Tommy and Wanda Blackwood, of Jonesville and a special son Keith Blackwood of Beaumont, TX; four grandchildren, Kacie Carlisle, of Charlotte, NC, Kyle Siefert, of Charlotte, NC, Cami Blackwood, of Asheville, NC, and Kelly Hoffman of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Frank Blackwood of Baton Rouge, LA; and a sister-in-law, Brenda Blackwood of Jonesville. Mrs. Blackwood was predeceased by three brothers, Carl Stepp, Pete Stepp and Roy Stepp; and a sister, Louise Gibson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, September 16, 2019 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Eddie Saxon.

Mr. Michael David Roark, age 54, husband of Kelly Fowler Roark, of 1119 Ganton Way, Myrtle Beach, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019 at his home. 

Mr. Roark was born December 13, 1964 in Union, a son of the late Gene Roark and Barbara Millwood Roark of Myrtle Beach.  He attended Union High School and was the owner and operator of Mike’s Body Shop in Union and then Myrtle Beach.  He was an avid Chevrolet Camaro enthusiast. 

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Michael Roark of Union; two step-daughters, Kinsley and McKenna Austin of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Tommy “Squeaky” Roark and wife, Kim, of Jonesville and a beloved pet, Bella.  He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Daisy Duckett and his paternal grandparents, Leonard and Lucille Roark.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, September 15, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Randy Burgess.

Ms. Virginia “Ginger” Chalk, age 73, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Ms. Chalk was born in Union, June 30, 1946 a daughter of the late John H. and Ruth Abbott Chalk. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended North Greenville College. She was the form owner of the Merle Norman Studio in Union and was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, John Houser and wife Keri Jean of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Carole Gleason and Rebecca Lipford and husband Lee all of Moore; one niece and nephew, Savannah and Rusty Lipford and a special friend and caregiver, George Anne Rouse.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mr. Jackie Donald Haney, age 80, of 905 Linersville Rd., Buffalo, SC., widower of Virginia McDaniel Haney, went home to be with the Lord, September 8, 2019, at Union Medical Center.

Mr. Haney was born in Union, SC., August 7, 1939, a son of the late Donald Haney and Bernice Millwood Haney. He attended Union High School and retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Company. Mr. Haney was a lifelong member of Buffalo United Methodist Church, where he attended faithfully, as long as his health permitted. He especially enjoyed serving in the music ministry, where he sang in the church choir and in earlier years sang with The Good News Singers Gospel Quartet.

Mr. Haney was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his grandson, Michael Scott Moore, of Buffalo. Mr. Haney was predeceased by his daughter, Lisa Haney Moore.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Miriam Mick and Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Terry Howell, Jimmy Maness, Ricky O’Dell, Robert Williams, Keith Wright, Mike Johnson and Ruben Hunter.

Mrs. Kathryn Howell “Kat” Willard, age 98, of E. South St., Union, widow of H.H. Willard, Jr. passed away Friday, September 6, 2019 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Willard was born in Newberry, January 15, 1921, a daughter of the late William and Bertha Palmer Howell. She was a retired nurse having worked in the office of Dr. F.P. Owings for 54 years.  In honor of Mrs. Willard’s service, Dr. Owings established a scholarship, the Kathryn H. Willard Nursing Scholarship Fund, through USC-Union to assist students who want to pursue a career in nursing.

Mrs. Willard was faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was a member of the David Clyburn Sunday School class and was a founding member of the Louise Willard Guild. She was active with the Kindergarten Sunday School class having received recognition for 47 years of service.

Mrs. Willard was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by four nieces, Caroline Bradley Smith and husband Dr. Larry H. Smith, Tate Bradley Majette and husband Rev. Dr. L. Dean Majette, Kathy Kirby Jobe and husband John and Claudia Howell Belue; five nephews, William Michael Kirby, Dr. Christopher Kirby and wife Audrianna, Ezell Willard and wife Ann, Eugene Willard and wife Sherry and James Patrick Littlejohn. She is also survived by a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Willard was predeceased by a sister, Laura H. Kirby; a brother, William M. Howell; a niece, Deborah H. Littlejohn and a nephew, Lynn Kirby.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Bauknight and Rev. Dr. L. Dean Majette. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be John F. Majette, Patrick M. Littlejohn, William Jeter, Roger Gregory, Norris Fowler, Graham Fox and Dennis Belue.

Mr. Kenneth Wayne “Bones” Wilburn, age 73, of 277 Old Pump Station Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Wilburn was born August 15, 1946 in Union, a son of the late Clarence Wilburn and Grace Brannon Wilburn.  He attended Union High School and retired from Conso Products.  Mr. Wilburn was of the Baptist Faith.  He was an avid fan of the Union Yellow Jackets and loved to go to the football games at Union County Stadium.

Surviving are a son, Timmy Wilburn and wife Christie of Jonesville; two sisters, Clemmie Gentry of Union and husband David and Reba House and husband Ray of Pauline; three brothers, Broadus Wilburn and wife Carol of Union, William “Bill” Wilburn of Union, and Jerry Wilburn of the home; two grandsons, Lee Wilburn and Josh Wilburn; and two granddaughters, Megan Wilburn and Ella Wilburn.  He was predeceased by one son, Staff Sgt. Jason Wilburn.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Martha Toney.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 4:00 PM prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Lillie Moss Grant, age 81, of 1514 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Union, widow of Lewis Grant, passed away while traveling from Oregon with her son and granddaughter.  Mrs. Grant’s trip to Oregon completed her bucket list dream of traveling to all 50 states.

Mrs. Grant was born July 19, 1938 in Union, a daughter of the late Rufus Moss and Myrtle Palmer Moss.  She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and USC-Upstate, where she received her Associates of Science in Nursing.  Mrs. Grant was a Registered Nurse and retired as Captain from the Army Nursing Corp, also serving in the United States Navy and South Carolina National Guard.  She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Grant’s grandchildren were the love of her life.  She also loved gardening, her pets, and enjoyed traveling; having visited all 50 States and 20 countries.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Wells and Mark Reynolds both of Union; a sister, Virginia Thompson and husband Paul of Jonesville; a brother, William Moss of Union; three grandchildren, Kimalee Wells of Jonesville, Brian Wells, Jr. of Jonesville, and Lila Grace Reynolds of Union; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Wells of Jonesville; and a number of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was predeceased by one son, Brian Wells, Sr., a sister, Betty Sullivan, and a brother Harrison Moss.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Merritt Wentz and Rev. Scott Cobb.  Entombment with full military honors will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum.

Mrs. Darlene Kirby Cheatham, age 58, of 451 Bob Little Rd., Union, widow of Larry Cheatham, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mrs. Cheatham was born March 19, 1961 in Union, a daughter of the late William Woodrow Kirby, Sr. and Maggie Nelson Kirby.  She is employed with Inman Mills—Enoree Plant.  Mrs. Cheatham was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are three step-daughters, Cindy Thompson and husband Rick, Stacy Betenbaugh, and Vanessa Gregory and husband Michael all of Union; a sister, Lisa Teague of Lexington, NC; three brothers, Robert Kirby of Union, Joe Kirby of Sumter and Jerry Kirby of Nebraska;  ten step-grandchildren, MaKayla Thompson, Gavin Thompson, Ciara Betenbaugh, Skylar Betenbaugh, Cile Betenbaugh, Cory Betenbaugh, Brittany Whitmire, Brook Whitmire, John Whitmire, and Mikey Gregory; three great-grandchildren; special friends, Annette and PeeWee Humphries, Dennis Graham, Jack and Judy Penvose, and Kelly and Mike Baldwin and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cheatham was predeceased by two brothers, William W. Kirby, Jr. and James Ronald “Jimmy” Kirby.
