Stella Mae Porter

Mrs. Stella Mae Childers Porter, age 86, wife of James N. Porter of 4058 Mt. Pleasant Church Rd., Chester, passed away Friday, September 29, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Porter was born in Lockhart, April 30, 1931, a daughter of the late Charlie and Pearl Watts Childers. She was a member of Wilksburg Baptist Church and was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Mary Susan Porter of Chester; three sons, Aubrey Steven Porter and wife Kathy of Chester, Kenneth Wayne Porter and wife Molly of Lockhart and James Darren Porter and wife Teresa of Chester; a sister, Judy Mize of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Ervin Childers of Buffalo and James Childers of Union; eleven grandchildren and a number of great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Porter was predeceased by nine brothers and a grandchild.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Wilksburg Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ray Harold Belue.

The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the services.

The family will be at the home, 4058 Mt. Pleasant Church Rd., Chester.


Pearline Bailey Adams
Jonesville, SC


Mrs. Pearline Bailey Adams, age 96, of 201 Pea Ridge Hwy, Jonesville, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Adams was born September 13, 1921 in the Baileytown Community of Union Co., a daughter of the late Wallace T. Bailey and Sally Bentley Bailey.  She graduated Valedictorian of Adamsburg School.  Mrs. Adams was a member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served as secretary of the Carlisle Hart Sunday School Class for many years, she also enjoyed cooking and serving meals for the Church and being a part of the Senior Citizens Group.  Mrs. Adams was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and volunteered with the Union County Voter Registration.  She was the last surviving member of ten children.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda A. Montgomery and husband Buddy of York and Anita A. Grizzle and husband Jeff of Jonesville; four grandchildren, Wayne Montgomery and wife Janice, Greg Harris and wife Jana, Meka Adams, and Kristen Crosby; five great-grandchildren, Travis, Tabitha, Pike, Lyris, and Kevelyn; one great-great-grandchild, Layne; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by one daughter, Becky A. Goings and one son, Wayne Hope Adams.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Michael Walker and Rev. Glen Ribelin.  Burial will follow in Porter-Gallman Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Mark Bailey, Richard Adams, Kenneth Adams, Marshall Adams, Dennis Fowler, Terry Bentley, Tim Gregory, and Wayne Belue.  Members of the Carlisle Hart Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Paul Kent Wells
Buffalo, S.C.


Mr. Paul Kent Wells, age 75, husband of Jan Smith Wells of 278 Dupree Farm Rd., Buffalo, passed away Monday, September 25, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Wells was born and raised in Buffalo, SC a son of the late Cecil Paul Wells and Catherine West Wells Finch.  He was a graduate of Union High School and also attended Carlisle Military School for two years.  Mr. Wells was retired from Torrington & Co—Tyger River Plant.  He was a member of Putman Baptist Church where he had previously served on as a Deacon, on the Finance Committee, and on the Building and Grounds Committee.  Mr. Wells was also a member of Buffalo Redman Tribe, the Union County Cattlemen’s Association, and a Board Member of the Union County Farm Bureau.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Candy Wells Flynn and husband Jimmy of Woodruff and Sadie Wells Hallman and husband Todd of Batesburg; one son, Paul Wallace Wells and wife April of Buffalo; one sister, Linda Betenbaugh and husband Bruce of Buffalo; one brother, Stanley Wells and wife Brenda of Buffalo; ten grandchildren, Jake McCall, Corey McCall and wife Lauren, Tara F. Crowe and husband Brandon, Chandler Wells, John Carter Wells, Blake Jordan, Hunter Jordan, Emily Jordan, Wells Hallman, and Kendall Hallman; seven great-grandchildren, Bryanna Crowe, Kylie Crowe, William Crowe, Leonidas McCall, Cowen McCall, Kathleen McCall and Aria McCall; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Don Tillman and Rev. Lynn Ford.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mr. Wells grandsons, Corey McCall, Jake McCall, Chandler Wells, Wells Hallman, John Carter Wells, and Brandon Crowe.  The following are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers, Russ and Kaye Ratliff, Dudley and Hazel Adams, Julia Adams, Courtney Jennings, Gary Griffin, Jimmy Johnson, Vic Elliott, Samuel Elliott, and Sam Elliott.

Mr. James Edward “Eddie” Lowe, age 60 of 324 St. James Drive, Woodland Heights Community, Spartanburg, SC, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Lowe was born in Spartanburg, SC February 7, 1957, a son of the late Harold Craig Lowe, Sr. and Virginia Louise Coffee Lowe.

Surviving are a brother, Harold Craig Lowe, Jr.; a cousin, Anne H. Malone both of the home; an aunt, Carmen V. Lowe of Spartanburg and a number of cousins. Mr. Lowe was predeceased by three brothers, Samuel Judson Lowe, Johnny Andrew Lowe and Randall Bill Lowe.

Mr. Billy Charles Anthony, age 39, husband of Lona S. Dantzler Anthony of 109 Peay Avenue, Union, passed away Friday, September 22, 2017 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Anthony was born in Union, SC October 14, 1977, a son of Dianne Summer Anthony of Buffalo and the late Thomas Dale Anthony, Sr. He was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Anthony was employed as an Automotive Tech Master with Big O Dodge. He served as a Recreational Coach, coaching the Bengals Football Team.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kensleigh Storm Anthony of the home; three sons: Dakota R. Anthony of the home, Zachery A. Young serving in the US Army and Corey A. Johnson of the home: a sister, Christy Casey and husband Chris of Buffalo; a brother, Dee Anthony and wife Beth of Union; a special brother-in-law, Elijah Dantzler and wife Katelyn of Wellford; an aunt, Kelly Holt; an uncle, Dale Summer of Buffalo; nieces and nephews: Jacob, Kalyn and Thomas “Lifter” Casey, D.J. and Emily Anthony; special cousin, Jan Chapman; special friends, Tack and Lara Brown and family,  Flame and Kayce Heatherly and Cromer. Mr. Anthony was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Charles and Norma Summer; paternal grandparents, Billy and Pearlee Holt and an uncle, Steve Summer.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev Mark Truitt. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Kathy P. Blackwell, age 67, wife of C.B. Blackwell of 1005 Deepwater Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Blackwell was born June 28, 1950 in Union, SC a daughter of the late Earle Poole  and Willie McNeace Poole.  She was a 1968 graduate of Union High School and was the Office Manager of CB’s Brake and Alignment.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Karen Petty and husband Tommy of Union; two granddaughters, Katelyn Petty and Kalli Petty both of Union; and one brother, Chuck Poole of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Jeff Farmer and Rev. John Cribbs.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

Active pallbearers will be, Phillip Russell, Brad Blackwell, Allen Petty, Aaron Petty, Bruce Blackwell, and Frankie Martin.

Visitation will be immediately following the burial at Sardis United Methodist Church.

Trina Dawn Howell Vinson
Union, SC


Ms. Trina Dawn Howell Vinson, age 57, of 202 Hart St., Union, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at her home.

Ms. Vinson was born in Union, SC on December 3, 1959 a daughter of the late Tommy Howell and Mammie Lou Foster Kendrick.  She had previously worked in the textile industry.

Surviving are one son, Michael Shane Howell of Union; two grandsons, Dillon Smith and wife Niyoke of Union and Michael Howell of Tennessee; three great-grandchildren, Jaden Smith, Audriauna Smith, and Nyiauna Smith; two special nephews, Mitchell Benton and Shaw Johnson and wife Cassey and their son, Ethan Johnson; special cousins Beth Broom of Union and Bob and Brenda Wilkins; and special friends, Joann Morris of Sharon and Rita Smith of Jonesville.  She was She was predeceased by one daughter, Tousha Smith and one sister, Belinda Darlene Johnson.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Harold A. Lee

Mr. Harold Alonzo Lee, age 82, husband of Faye William Lee of 152 Peach Shed Rd., Jonesville, passed away Saturday, surrounded by his family at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lee was born in Union Co., November 23, 1934 a son of Ruth M. Lee of Union and the late Lucy Waldrop Lee, who died when he was young child, and the late J.K. Lee. Mr. Lee was retired from United Merchants, Union Mill where from the time he was a young man, he took care of his mother, brothers and sisters. He was an active member of Morningside Baptist Church where he was the former Bus Driver and was a member of the Gene Adams Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, Lorie Head and husband Thomas of Jonesville and Lisa Faulks and husband David of Union; two sons, Terry Lee and wife Faye and Shannon Lee and wife Samantha all of Union; four sisters, Shirley Lancaster of Jonesville, Mae Williams of Union, Nancy Lawson of North Carolina and Linda Jones of Union, three brothers, James Lee and Joe Lee both of Union and Ernest Lee of Kannapolis, NC; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mr. Lee was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Faye Lee and a sister, Alice Johnson.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Dr. Aulbrey Calvert and Rev. Josh Freeman.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the services.

Douglas L. ‘Pete’ Brock
Union, S.C.


Mr. Douglas Leo “Pete” Brock, of 433 Kelly Rd., Union, departed life on September 15, 2017. Mr. Brock was born on July 16, 1944, a son of the late Jesse L. Brock and the late Rena Mae Parton Brock.

Before retirement, he was employed in the textile industry and spent 17 years at Monarch Mill. After his retirement, he busied himself performing lawn maintenance and repairs for various individuals throughout the community. A devoted Christian and member of New Hope Baptist Church, he was the sound engineer and primary grounds keeper of the church.

Surviving Mr. Brock are four children; daughters Linda Brock, Christy Brock, and Kimberly Brock, and son; Brian “Red” Brock, four step-children; Ashley Lawson, Matthew Lawson, Jesse Lawson and Courtney Lawson; nineteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving Mr. Brock are a sister; Peggy Phillips and three brothers; Buddy Brock, Gene Brock, and Jimmy Brock. He was predeceased by a sister, Deedee Florence Deputy and a brother; Olin Howard “Wink” Brock.

The families are at their respective residences.

The family would like to thank the staff of M.S.A. Hospice; Stephanie Sherbert and Courtney Lawson for the care they rendered Mr. Brock.

Mrs. Rosa Lee Seymore Hise, age 96 formerly of Spring St., Buffalo, passed away Friday, September 15, 2017 at Magnolia Place in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Hise was born November 9, 1920 in Whitmire, SC a daughter of the late Robert Lee Seymore and Bernice Louise Willard Seymore.  She was retired from Lily Tulip Manufacturing.  Mrs. Hise was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and Buffalo Senior Citizens. 

Surviving are a daughter, EileenKay Schaufler and husband Joseph of Charlotte, NC; three granddaughters, Vikki Ireland of Hudson, NH, Kim Hanrahan of Howell, NJ, and Kristy Parcejus of Apoka, FL; four grandsons, Gunner Isaksen of Alpharetta, GA, Troy Isaksen of Cranford, NJ, Lance Isaksen of Nashua, NH, and Kyle Isaksen of Hampton, GA; twenty great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Sarah Roberts of Columbia, Sandra Seymore of Union, and Clyde Seymore of Union.  She was predeceased by one sister, Hattie Mae Moss and two brothers, Robert Seymore and Clyde Seymore.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, September 18, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess.  Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Lillie Dane P. Carter, age 88, of 4721 Jonesville Lockhart Highway, Union, widow of William Anthony Carter, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Center.

Mrs. Carter was born in Chester, SC on December 21, 1928 a daughter of the late Horace Lee Porter, Sr. and Edna Robbins Porter.  She was a graduate of Sharon High School and was retired from Milliken and Co.—Lockhart Plant.  Mrs. Carter was a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church where she had previously held the offices of Elder, Clerk of Sessions, a Sunday School Teacher, and was the pianist for a number of years.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. Carter and wife Jean of Union; two sisters, JoAnn Gibson and Carolyn Belue and husband Johnny all of Union; two brothers, Sonny Porter of Chester and Eddie Porter of Lockhart; five grandchildren, Robin C. Black and husband Kevin, Todd Carter and wife Kaye, Heather C. Colson and husband Jason, Wendy Cook and husband William, and Jamie Duncan; seven great-grandchildren, Robert James Black, Jessica Black, Brett Gruver, Jacob Colson, Ashley Colson, Emmalee Brown, and Elizabeth Johnson; two great-great-grandchildren, Daniel Herrera and Emily Black; and numerous nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Teresa Gaston and Dorothy Sutton.  She was predeceased by seven sisters, Frances, Irene, Ann, Margaret, Jane, Elaine, and Louise and two brothers, Tom and Horace, Jr. 

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ed Melvin and Rev. Delos Blanton.  Visitation will be held after the services at the cemetery.

Steve “Shine” Hutcherson

Mr. Francis Steve “Shine” Hutcherson, age 64, of 936 Linersville Rd., Union, passed away Monday, September 11, 2017 at his home after a brief illness. Mr. Hutcherson was married for 41 years to Cindy Willard Hutcherson.

Mr. Hutcherson was born in Union, SC on August 23, 1953 a son of the late Harry Hutcherson and Nancy Johns Hutcherson.  He retired after 39 years from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant.  Mr. Hutcherson was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Melissa Kendrick and husband Shane of Myrtle Beach; two grandchildren, Dylan Kendrick and Kaylee Kendrick; two sisters, Margaret Willard of Union and Harriett Eaves and husband David of Jonesville; one brother, Dennis Hutcherson of Jonesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one sister, Brenda Caldwell.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Mr. Mark Foster. 

Visitation will be held 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral.

Margaret C. Hines

Mrs. Margaret Clark Hines, age 96, widow of Willard “Wishie” Hines, formerly of Bowling Ave., Union, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Windsor House in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Hines was born in Union, March 27, 1921, a daughter of the late John Thomas Clark and Edna Spillers Clark. She was a homemaker and life-long member of Unity United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Adult Choir. Mrs. Hines was the last surviving member of seven children.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Katie H. Soto and husband Jeremy of Spartanburg; a grandson, Matt Hines and wife Shannon of Lexington; and three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Issac, and Luke Soto.  Mrs. Hines was predeceased by a son, Monty Hines.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 9:30 AM at Unity United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Carolina Salmons.

The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the services.

Mrs. Ann Belcher Johnson, age 89 of 517 Forest Street, Jonesville, widow of William A. Johnson, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Spartanburg, SC June 28, 1928, a daughter of the late Ed Belcher and Minnie Belcher. She was a member of Jonesville Church of God.

Surviving are three daughters: Delores Powell and husband Bob of Laurens, Susan Bradburn and husband Everette of Jonesville and Kay Leatherwood of Woodruff; a son, Bill Johnson and wife Libby of Spartanburg; sixteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by two daughters, Betty Ann Lawter and Jean Owens and a son, Richard Johnson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Jonesville Church of God conducted by Rev. Roger Byrd. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Mr. Robert Eric Wade, age 48, husband of Carla Brannon Wade of 107 Sprouse St., Union, passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 at his home.

Eric was born July 21, 1969 in Union, SC a son of Ronnie Wade and Vicki Ivey Wade Nalls. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Spartanburg Community College. Eric had previously been employed with Sonoco Products and Sterilite Corporation. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are his step-mother, Genia Wade of Union; two daughters, Jessica Wade and Christina Davis; a sister, Khristy Wade of Union; a brother, Chip Wade of Columbia; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Wade of Union; and his best friend, Brad Watson. He was predeceased by his son, Taylor Wade.

Mrs. Sue R. Wilson, age 70, wife of Evans Wilson of 257 Wilson Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, September 7, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Wilson was born January 19, 1947 in Union, SC a daughter of the late Dana Green Rogers and Martha Lee Carter Rogers.  She retired from Spartan Mills – Rosemont Plant. 

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Buffy Medford and special daughter Donna Nance and husband Mike all of Union; one son, Todd Medford of Clearwater, FL; ten grandchildren, Kyle Nance, Ashley Wilson, Sarah Wilson, Lacey Medford, Brooke Wilson, Cody Harris, Deidre Wilson Foster, Heather Wilson, Dylan Rogers, and Carson Medford; one great-grandson, Brayden Jennings; one sister, Dana Kaye Adams of Spartanburg; one brother, David B. Rogers and wife June of Gaffney; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Michael Wilson and Ricky Wilson

Raymond Frank Perry

Mr. Raymond Frank Perry, age 52, husband of Vickie Pruitt Perry of 1207 Sardis Rd., Lot 1, Union, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Perry was born in Union, SC June 28, 1965, a son of the late Michael Wayne Perry and Dorothy Horne Caussey. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two step-sons: Joshua Pruitt and Dusty Stephens; a brother, Ronnie Perry all of Union; paternal grandmother, Valerie Medford of Union;  one niece, Kayla; two step-grandchildren; three aunts and an uncle.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, September 8, 2017 at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Jeff Farmer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Friday at the church prior to the services.

Memorials may be made to Raymond Frank Perry Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 293, Union, SC 29379.

The family will be at the home of his brother-in-law, Wesley Pruitt, 229 Tate Avenue, Union and at the home of his grandmother Valerie Medford, 276 Vernon Foster Rd., Union.


Jack W. Caldwell
Woodruff, SC


Mr. Jack W. Caldwell, age 83, husband of Connie Millwood Caldwell of 149 Grey St., Woodruff, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Simpsonville Rehab and Healthcare.

Mr. Caldwell was born on November 8, 1933 in Gastonia, NC a son of the late Irene Caldwell.  He was a retired barber and a Veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force having served as a medic in the Korean Conflict.  Mr. Caldwell was a member of the DAV and member of VFW #9539 in Roebuck. He was first married to the late Dorothy Knighten Mosier Caldwell.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two step-daughters, Brenda M. Moore and husband Don of Boiling Springs and Patricia M. Summer of Jonesville; four step-sons, Ted E. Mosier and Rickie Mosier both of Pacolet, Johnathan Riley of Woodruff and Barry Ravan of Chesnee; one niece, Judy of Kings Mountain, NC; one sister-in-law, Hazel Caldwell of Gastonia, NC; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one brother, Paul Caldwell.

Funeral services will be held, 2:00 PM Friday, September 8, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Chaplain Allen Leonard.  Burial with Military Honors will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be the Men of the VFW.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.


James T. Patrick, Jr.
Sharon, S.C.


Mr. James Timothy “Timmy John” Patrick, Jr., age 50 of 3950 Vandy Dr., Sharon, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Patrick was born in Lockhart, November 5, 1966 a son of Alice Lee Patrick of the home and the late James T. Patrick, Jr.  He was formerly employed with Crawford Logging.

Surviving in addition to his mother are three sisters, Faye Dawkins and husband Gene of Union, Toni Kay Johnson and husband Barry and Wanda Patrick all of Kings Mountain, NC; three brothers, Harold Revis and wife Penny, Randy Patrick and wife Elaine and Bo Patrick all of Union.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Faye Dawkins, 133 Pumpkin Dr., Union.

Kevin Scott “Scotty” McAbee
Buffalo, SC


Mr. Kevin Scott “Scotty” McAbee, age 43, husband of Allison Mosley-McAbee, of 134 Hill St., Buffalo, passed away, Monday, September 4, 2017 at his home.

Mr. McAbee was born in Union, on March 4, 1974 a son of Judy Wicks McAbee Jenkins of Union and the late Arthur Clinton McAbee.  He had previously worked in construction and as a commercial fisherman.  Mr. McAbee was of the Baptist Faith and an avid Clemson Tiger Fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are six sisters, Jessica Gault of Union, Holly Bramlett and husband James of Gaffney, Heaven Gault of Union, Amanda Gault of Whitmire, Brandy O’Shields and husband Brad of Union, and Brittany Owens of Union; one brother, Kevin Gault of Union; three step-daughters, Davina Hammond and husband Chris and Tiffany Iovane and husband Danny all of Union, and Tamara Eller of Jonesville; seven step-grandchildren, Adrian Jeter, Raelyn Eller, Trentyn Young, Adalyne Hammond, Lucas Hammond, Noah Iovane, and Kyleigh Iovane; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one sister, Melissa Gault.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, September 7, 2017 at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess.  Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM prior to the services at the church.

Mardene T. Matthews
Union, SC


Mrs. Mardene T. Matthews, age 81, of 591 Philippi Church Rd., Union, widow of Thomas C. Matthews, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Lockhart, SC on August 5, 1936 a daughter of the late Roy F. Taylor and Ruby Brown Taylor.  She was a graduate of Lockhart High School.  Mrs. Matthews retired as a Supervisor from Milliken & Co.—Monarch Plant and had previously worked at Lockhart Mill.  She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Matthews had a tremendous love for her family, God and Gospel Music.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are one daughter, Leesa M. Frost and husband Dennis of Union; four grandchildren, Brian Hill and wife Brandee of Union, Melissa Risher and husband David of Easley, Tina Frost and Michelle Frost both of Union; eleven great-grandchildren; and two special nephews, Dennis Farr and Bobby Farr both of Union.  She was predeceased by one sister, Eunice Farr and one brother Roy “Bud” Taylor.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Harper and Rev. Dale Welch.  Burial will follow at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Farr, Bobby Farr, Gonzale Childers, Mike Hill, Tim Hill, and James Garner.

Visitation will be held 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM Tuesday prior to the services at the Church.

The family would like to thank the Nurses and Staff of Gentiva Home Health and Spartanburg Regional Hospice House for their care of Mrs. Matthews.
