Edgar Larry Tyler

Mr. Edgar Larry Tyler, age 66, husband of Rebecca Whitehead “Wally” Tyler of 1303 River Rd., Union, went home to be with his Lord, Monday, September 28, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Tyler was born in Kingsport, TN August 5, 1949, a son of the late Edgar George Tyler and Sara Adams Tyler. He was retired from Hodge’s Real Estate. Mr. Tyler was a faithful member of Morningside Baptist Church where he served as an assistant Sunday School Teacher; served with the 12 Point Ministry and also served with the Men’s Ministry of the church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: TJ Tyler and wife Nicole, Travis Tyler and Ashley Tyler and friend Dabriada all of Union; a step-daughter, Jenifer Bradley and husband Mitch of Chapin; two sisters: Alice T. Sorrells of Union and Gail T. Phillips and husband Rev. Dr. William “Buddy” Phillips of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Michael “Mikey” Tyler of Clinton; seven grandchildren: Samantha Hogan, Dylan Tyler, Tori Tyler, Joshua Tyler, Jada Tyler, Madelyn Tyler and Gabriel Tyler; two great-grandchildren: Chloe Guy and Aubrey Beaman and a special friend, Sherry H. Hodge of Union. 

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Aulbrey Calvert, Rev. Dr. Eddie Saxon and Rev. Dr. William Phillips.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Poole, Paul “Doe” McCutchen, Zachary Poole, Benji Sorrells, Michael Sorrells, Tyler Phillips and Jason Proctor. The following are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers: Don Anderson, Tommy Watkins, Ronnie O’Dell, Tim Hollingsworth, Gerald Gregory, Donnie Warren, members of his Sunday School Class, members of the Men’s Ministry and members of the 12 Point Ministry.

Tammy Marie Haney
Buffalo, SC


Mrs. Tammy Marie Haney, age 53, wife of Gerald G. Haney of 125 Hill St., Buffalo passed away Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Haney was born in Elk Horn, Canada on August 18, 1962 a daughter of Marjorie Mullen Moore of Union and the late John F. Moore. She was formerly employed in the Accounting Department at Conso Products.  Mrs. Haney was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a daughter, Heather Robertson and husband Brad of Chesnee, SC; a son, Robbie Malone of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Abbie Robertson and Noah Robertson; two brothers, Robert Trent Moore and Terry Lee Moore both of Union; several nieces and nephews; and a beloved pet Yorkie, “Taz.”

Funeral services will be held, 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess.  Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Haney, William Haney, Brian Turner, Tommy Turner, Kevin Haney, and Freddie Moore.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00 PM Wednesday Afternoon prior to the services at the church.

Gerald Dexter Fielder, MD
Union, SC


Dr. Gerald Dexter Fielder, age 89, husband of Lora D. Fielder of 3870 Jonesville Lockhart Highway, Union, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2015 at his home.

Dr. Fielder was born in Paragould, Ark., on July 2, 1926 a son of the late Alvin Fielder and Vera Beasley Fielder.  He graduated Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1943 at the age of 16.  Dr. Fielder then served his Country during World War II in the United States Navy as a Naval Pilot. In 1944, he transferred to the ROTC program and trained at the University of South Carolina and was commissioned as a deck officer.  After three years aboard a Landing Ship Tank Dr. Fielder went to Baylor University Dental School, after two years he transferred to the University of Arkansas School of Medicine.  After completing his training, he practiced in Spartanburg for a year before Opening his practice in Union on July 6, 1953 in a space over the old Smith’s Drug Store.  He served on the Union Hospital Board of Trustees for many years, he was a past physician of the year and in 2003 Gov. Mark Sanford presented him with the Order of the Silver Crescent.  In 2010 the South Carolina Office of Rural Health gave him the Pioneer Award for contributing significantly to the delivery of primary health care in a rural community.  In 2011, Dr. Fielder retired from his practice, as the oldest practicing physician in Union County.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Julia Lee Fielder and husband Don Sanders of Columbia and Jenni Fielder Horne and husband Tony of Union;  three sons,  Donnie Vaughan, Ron Vaughan and wife Lisa, and Carl Alexander, all of Lockhart; two daughters, Cathy Vaughan Revis of Boiling Springs and Lora Ann Vaughan Knox and husband Jimmy Teaster of Lockhart; twelve grandchildren, Hunt Huntley and wife Anne of Greenville, Libby Whigham and husband Terry of Irmo, Fielder Huntley of Columbia, Jake Robertson of Union, Courtney Allen and husband Tony of Greenville, Amanda Freestone and husband Derek of Greer, Josh Revis of Union, Daniel Revis of Boiling Springs, Destiny Knox of Rock Hill, Madison Knox of Lockhart, Jessica Garcia of Lockhart, Rochelle Brown and husband Billy of Union, and Ashton Grace Vaughan of Lockhart; seven great-grandchildren, Jill, Ali, and May Huntley, Leo Allen, Shaylan Revis, Avery Freestone, Kyeler Gilbert, and Layken English.  He was predeceased by a daughter, Jill Fielder Huntley and a brother, Kenneth Edward Fielder and wife Lorriane.

Funeral services will be held, 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at First Baptist Church Lockhart conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill, Rev. Delos Blanton, and Rev. Timothy Thompson.  Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.

Marli Granger Sumner, 4 weeks old infant daughter of Robbie Sumner and Julie Coleman of 631 Bethany Church R., Moore, SC went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 26, 2015 at her home. Marli was born in Spartanburg, SC August 28, 2015.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two sisters, Graci Sumner and Lilli Sumner; three brothers, Mason Coleman, Luke Sumner and Jake Sumner all of the home; Maternal Grandparents, Patty Jolly Coleman of Union and David Coleman of Greer; Paternal Grandparents, Shirley Robinson of Union and Robert Sumner of Union; Maternal Great-Grandmother, Roberta O’Dell of Union and Paternal Great-Grandmother, Dorothy Sinclair of Union. Marli was predeceased by Great-Grandparents, Roy Jolly and Alice Jolly, Walter Coleman and Earl Sinclair.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 4:00 PM Monday, September 28, 2015 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jerry Ford. Burial will be in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery.

Carl Smith
Union, SC


Mr. Carl Lewis Smith, age 79, husband of Thelma Crocker Smith of 820 Meansville Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Union Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, SC June 1, 1936, a son of the late Claude P. Smith and Annie Belle Palmer Smith. He had worked for Milliken & Company for thirty-two years and retired from Torrington. Mr. Smith was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. For many years,  he was a very active member of the Black Mountain Boys Bluegrass Band and played all over North and South Carolina. Mr. Smith was a very loving person who enjoyed making people laugh and visiting people in nursing homes.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sisters: Linda S. Thomas and husband Preston and Pearl S. Inman both of Union; three brothers: Kenneth Smith, Monroe Smith and wife Nancy and Gilbert E. Smith, Sr., all of Union; a special niece, Crissy Thomas of Greenville and numerous other nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was predeceased by sisters, Della Moss and Hazel S. Gregory and brothers, L.J. Smith, Harold E. Smith and William Charles Smith.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mark Truitt, Rev. Scott Cobb and Rev. Bill Wheeler. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Joe Edward Newton, Sr.

Mr. Joe Edward “Buddy” Newton, Sr, age 77, husband of Joyce Wright Newton, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 27, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Newton was born in Buffalo, SC October 11, 1937, a son of the late James A. Newton and Loree Phillips Newton. He retired from Cone Mill-Carlisle Finishing Plant and also retired from the Union County Recycling Center. Mr. Newton was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Beth Henderson and husband Kevin; a son, Joey Newton and wife Sharon; three grandchildren: Emma Brooke Jarrett, Cody Newton and Erin Henderson, Trey Newton and wife Amanda; two great-grandchildren: Delaney Newton and Mackenzie Flowers; two sisters: Frances Boulware and husband Thomas and Margie Garner and a brother, Elzie Newton. Mr. Newton was predeceased by a daughter, Teresa Ann Newton, a sister, Brenda Scott and a brother, Elizah “Red” Newton.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Rick Henderson. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Barth Scott “Trick” Willard

Mr. Barth Scott “Trick” Willard, age 80, husband of Martha Ann Gregory Willard of 215 Wilbur Street, Union, went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 25, 2015 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Willard was born in Union, SC May 18, 1935, a son of the late Joe Barth Willard and Maggie Scott Willard. He was retired from the City of Union following forty years of service. Mr. Willard was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and had also served as a former Deacon with Westside Baptist Church. Mr. Willard had served in the S.C. National Guard.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty years are two sons: Scott Willard and wife Teresa of Chester and Steve Willard and wife Laura of Union; three sisters: Hazel Nance of Union, Frances Mitchell and Dolly Pittman and husband Jim all of Buffalo; a brother, Wayne Willard and wife Jenny of Union; two sisters-in-law: Dot Willard of Spartanburg and Ginger Wix and husband Joe of Jonesville; three granddaughters: Melia Willard of Chester, Meghan Willard and Annie Willard both of Union and a special granddaughter, Morgan Clayton of Union. Mr. Willard was predeceased by brothers: Joe Thomas Willard, Clarence Willard, Dean Willard, Ned Willard and William Willard.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, September 28, 2015 at Ottaray Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Walter Holcombe and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Ruby Jenkins Lane Boulware, age 76, wife of Joseph Edward Boulware of 1347 Neal Shoals Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Union Medical Center.

Mrs. Boulware was born in Union, SC November 26, 1938, a daughter of the late Robert Jenkins and Laura Pettit Jenkins. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Cone Mill-Carlisle Finishing Plant. Mrs. Boulware was a member of Welcome Baptist Church where she served as Church Treasurer, a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class and was also a member of the choir. Mrs. Boulware was first married to the late Paul Lane and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons: Tommy Lane and wife Deborah, Eddie Lane and wife Teresa all of Union and Scott Lane of Clinton; three grandchildren: Tyler Lane, Andrea Lane and Justin Lane and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Boulware was predeceased by sisters, Shirley Reynolds, Margaret Jenkins and Janie Sue Lawson and brothers, John Gary Jenkins, Doug Jenkins, Bob Jenkins and Willard Jenkins.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis, Rev. Tony Pettit and Rev. Lee Franklin. Burial will be in the Hawkins Family Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tyler Lane, Jon Robinson, Buddy Parris, Jimmy Reynolds, Ivey Boulware and Lance Davis. Members of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Danny Ray Malpass, age 59, husband of Sherree Parkins Malpass of 158 Haney Rd., Buffalo, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 22, 2015.

Mr. Malpass was born in Union, SC January 6, 1956, a son of Charles L. Malpass of the home and the late Bebe Lawson Malpass. He was formerly employed with Contec in Spartanburg and was previously employed with Cone Mill- Carlisle Finishing Plant. Mr. Malpass was a member of Putman Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, Director of Sunday School Department and a former member of the choir. Mr. Malpass was a Christian man who was devoted to his family and church. He was an avid Gamecock Fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Roxanne Parham and husband Rick; two sons: Corey L. Malpass and wife Crystal and Cody L. Malpass and wife Kimberly; two brothers: Donnie Mac Malpass and Ricky Malpass and five grandchildren: Destiny Lee, Kaden Malpass, Lexi Puckett, Emma Grace Puckett and Tristian Malpass.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, September 25, 2015 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Rick Henderson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Edna Sumner Knox
Union, SC


Mrs. Edna Sumner Knox, age 88, of 2046 Jonesville Hwy, Union, widow of Claude Knox, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mrs. Knox was born in Union, SC July 15, 1927, a daughter of the late Herbert Sumner and Eva Spelts Sumner. She was retired from Union Mill and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mrs. Knox was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Larry G. Knox and wife Mary of Lexington; a number of nieces and nephews and is also survived by a very special extended family: Shaun Wolfe, Rachel Wolfe, Tyler Wolfe and Caroline Wolfe all of Chapin. Mrs. Knox was predeceased by a son, Randy Knox.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mark Truitt. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Preston Thomas, Tony Gault, Les Gibson, Lloyd Burgess, Roger Sumner and Larry Caldwell.

Robert W. Brown, Sr.
Union, SC


Robert White “Bobby” Brown, Sr., 88, of 414 East Main St., husband of Eugenia Adams Brown, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015 at Laurens County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Brown was born in Spartanburg County on Oct. 23, 1926 and grew up in Pacolet, a son of the late B.F. and Ruth White Brown.  He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was assigned to Special Services with the First Corps and played baseball and basketball to entertain the troops. When he returned home Mr. Brown signed a contract with the New York Giants and played in Hickory, N.C.; Fort Smith, Ark.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Knoxville, Tenn.; and Spartanburg. He attended Spartanburg Methodist College where he and his brother, Pete, played together on the basketball team. Both also played textile baseball. Mr. Brown also played basketball at Lenoir-Rhyne College and he attended Wofford College.

Mr. Brown went to work for J.P. Stevens, Jonesville Plant in 1953. Initially he was hired as recreation director, which involved supervising games and after school and summer activities for the children in the mill village. A gym was located in the old YMCA building there. As part of his duties Mr.  Brown also managed the textile baseball team. He played on the mill’s slow pitch softball team, which had a good record. One year he also helped the high school by coaching the girls’ basketball team. He loved the folks in Jonesville and they loved him. In 1956 Brown became personnel manager at the plant, a job he held until the plant closed in 1981. He was retired from Builders Transport and Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church of Union where he had been named a life deacon. He was a former board member of the Union Hospital District Board of Trustees.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his four children and their spouses: Amy Brown Satterfield and her husband, Mark, of Charlotte, N.C.; Robert Brown and his wife, Anna; Benjy Brown and his wife, Jennifer and Richard Brown and his wife, Jennifer, all of Union; seven grandchildren: Katie Resumovic and her husband, Amer, of Spartanburg; Laura Satterfield of Denver, Colorado; Rachel Satterfield of Augusta, Ga.;  Bobby Brown, Angela Brown, Andrew Brown and Benjamin Brown; all of Union; and one great-grandson,  Alec Resumovic of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by his sisters and brother, Dorothy Brown Bailey, Carolyn Brown and John R. “Pete” Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Union by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial with Military Honors will be in Goucher Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Randy Brown, Doug Coleman, Tommy Cudd, Hayden Genoble, Mark Sanders and Tommy Genoble.

Members of the Sam Cain Sunday School Class and present and former deacons of First Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.

Members of the Holcombe Funeral Home grave staff are asked to assemble at the graveside.

The family will receive friends at the church from 9:45 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the service.

William G. “Bill” Prince
Union, SC


Mr. William Gist “Bill” Prince, age 83, of 723 Old Pump Station Rd. Union, widower of Carol Ivey Prince, passed away Friday, September 18, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Prince was born in Union, October 6, 1931 a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Prince.  He was retired from Torrington Co. and was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Prince was a veteran of the US Marine Corp having served during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart Recipient. He was an avid farmer and a member of the Cattlemen’s Association and other agricultural groups in the county.

Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Prince of Union and Vickie Dianne Prince; a son, Will Prince and wife Katie of the home, five grandchildren, Casey Alman, Charleen Alman, Willie Alman, Dakota Prince and Willow Prince; a brother-in-law, Petey Ivey and wife Jerri and their son, Trent Ivey. Mr. Prince was predeceased by a sister and a brother.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Mr. Les Murphy.

 Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Harry Preston McCutcheon, Jr., age 91, of 141 Wildwood Lane, Union, widower of Nellie Bennett McCutcheon, passed away Friday, September 18, 2015 at his home.

Mr. McCutcheon was born in Union, June 13, 1924, a son of the late Harry Preston McCutcheon, Sr. and Mamie Hull McCutcheon.  He was retired from Roper Chevrolet and was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WWII.  Mr. McCutcheon was a member of Lockhart Baptist Church and attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Harriet O’Dell of Mauldin; a son, Paul J. McCutcheon and wife Cheryl of Union; a sister, Joye Sue Jones of Georgia, six grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, September 21, 2015 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Harper.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

Mrs. Nancy Jonas Mabry, age 68, of 4715 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., passed away Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Mabry was born in Cripple Creek, VA, August 2, 1947, a daughter of the late Gordon Tate Jonas and Peggy Whittaker Jonas.  She was a graduate of Converse College and received her Masters of Education from USC-Upstate.  Mrs. Mabry was retired from the Union Co. School District as a teacher at Buffalo Elementary School and was a member of Crestview Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen Mabry of Las Cruces, NM and Cathy M. Freeman and husband Josh of Union; a sister, Sally J. Gotkiewicz  of Montgomery, AL; a brother, Danny Jonas of Max Meadows, VA; two granddaughters, Abbey and Aryn Freeman; several nieces and nephews and her beloved dachshund, Ginger.

A celebration of life service will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Crestview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Josh Freeman.  The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the services.

Staff and teachers of Buffalo Elementary School are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Dianne P. Knox, age 70, wife of Tommy F. Knox of 184 Browns Creek Church Rd., Union, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Union Medical Center.

Mrs. Knox was born in Union, SC on March 4, 1945 a daughter of the late Joe W. Prince and Annie D. Morrow Prince. She was retired from Knox Tire and Appliance Company. Mrs. Knox was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Melinda K. Littlejohn and husband Jeff and a son, Tommy F. Knox, II and wife Jennie all of Union; three grandchildren: Lee Littlejohn and wife Tiffany, Miranda Littlejohn and Tate Knox and wife Mallerie all of Union; a great-granddaughter, Kylie Knox of Union. Mrs. Knox was predeceased by two sisters, Joann Jones and Tannis Dover and one brother, Chris Prince.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Cato and Rev. Benny Green. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Harold Bruce Vaughan, age 77, husband of Paulette Williams Vaughan of 737 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Union, SC on August 10, 1938 a son of the late J. Frank Vaughan and Fannie “Katie” Vaughan.  He was a 1957 graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired after 51 years from Milliken & Co.—Excelsior Plant.  Mr. Vaughan was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and was an avid farmer.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Beth Belue of Union; two sisters, Gail V. Gallman of Jonesville and Kim V. Greer and husband Jimmy of Union; four grandchildren, Brittany Belue, Cody Belue, Loren Vaughan and fiancée Justin Wade, and Laina Vaughan; one great-granddaughter, Kinzli Wade; two step-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one son, Steven Vaughan and one brother, Franklin Vaughan.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, September 14, 2015 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. John Lee.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Stanley D. Ketterman, age 67, husband of Ann Lawson Ketterman of 306 Meadow Woods Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ketterman was born in Union, SC on May 11, 1948 a son of the late Walter Ketterman and Beatrice Martin Ketterman.  He was a graduate of Union High School and was a retired truck driver.  Mr. Ketterman was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Vietnam Era.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Melissa K. Justice and husband David of Buffalo; a son, Chris Ketterman and wife Brandi of Union; a brother Jerry Ketterman of Union; and three grandchildren, Noah, London, and Eli Ketterman.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Merritt “Tuie” Wentz.  Burial will follow at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Steve McBride, age 55, of 180 Love Lane Pacolet, passed away Monday, September 7, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mr. McBride was born in Union, SC on January 5, 1960 a son of Mazel Vanderford McBride Owens and the late Richard Donald McBride, Sr. He worked in construction and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a stepfather, John “Perk” Owens of the home; two sons, Stephen Heath McBride of Simpsonville and Zachery McBride and wife Jennie of Fountain Inn, SC; one grandson Benson McBride of Fountain Inn; three step granddaughters, Raven King and husband Leman, Samantha Burrell and Phoenix King all of Woodruff; one step grandson, Matthew O’Hara of Woodruff; one step great-grandson, Leman King, II; and one brother, Richard D. McBride, Jr. of Pacolet.

Funeral services will be held 3:00PM Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tommy Mann.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. George Timothy “Tim” Porter, age 52, husband of Amie Mashburn Porter of 2189 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union, passed away Friday, September 4, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Porter was born in Union, September 22, 1962, a son of the late Peggy Porter Ponder and William “Bubblegum” West of Union.  He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and Spartanburg Community College.  Mr. Porter was formerly employed with Upstate Linen Service in Spartanburg and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father are a daughter, Alisha Cash of Chester, a step-son, Luke Thomas of the home; a sister, Amanda Sweatt of Lockhart; a grandson, Cayden Cash of Chester and a nephew, Dalton Vinson of Lockhart. Mr. Porter was predeceased by a brother, Billy West.

A memorial service for Mr. Porter will be scheduled at a later date.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Amanda Sweatt, 404 Longview Drive, Lockhart.


Franklin Delano Brown

Mr. Franklin Delano Brown, age 78, husband of Frances Greer Brown of 200 Lover’s Hill Rd., Union, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mr. Brown was born in Charlotte, NC September 8, 1936, a son of the late Garfield Brown and Anna Mullen Brown. He was a graduate of North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC and retired from the US Postal Service in Charlotte, NC.  He was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church and was also a member of the South Carolina Deaf Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Brian J. Brown of Iron Mountain, MI and Charles T. Brown of Chester; a step-daughter, Susan A. Hanvey and husband Randy “Chump” of Union; a step-son, William “Jeff” Brockman and wife Cyndi of Pauline; a brother, Thomas Brown of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 6, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Alvin Biggerstaff.

Visitation will be held in the chapel after the services.

Mrs. Mary Alice Stevenson of Union, SC, widow of John William Stevenson, Sr., passed away Thursday afternoon, September 3, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Cleveland and Fannie Louise Traylor.

Survivors include: three children: Judy Mahan and her husband Jack of Greenville, John William Stevenson, Jr of Union, and Jackie Chalk and her husband Rodney of Greenville; six grandchildren: Trey Stevenson, Alison Davis (Brian), Andy Stevenson (Gina), Kevin Chalk, Todd Chalk and Brad Chalk; six great-grandchildren; three sisters: Grace Barnes and Betty Knotts of Williston and Wilma Duncan of Flat Rock, NC.

Mary Alice was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She served in many capacities, including the church choir and was part of the Hostess Committee. She enjoyed her fellowship with the Tabernacle Senior Groups.

Mary Alice was a long time employee of the U.S. Postal Service until her retirement. She was a vibrant spirit who loved the Lord and her family.

Funeral services will be held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, SC 29379 at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 6, 2015 conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial will be at the Cool Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Holcombe Funeral Home, 310 W South Street, Union from 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday evening.

Ms. Edith Mary Hughes Jolly,  age 76, very devoted to her family, loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, of 191 Toal Rd., Enoree, passed away Monday, September 1, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loved ones.

Ms. Jolly was born in Spartanburg, SC April 24, 1939, a daughter of the late Jim Hughes and Edith C. Hughes. She retired from Conso Products and was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church. She was previously married to the late Harry Ray Jolly.

Surviving are a daughter, Joan “Tootie” Pittman and husband Ken of Clinton; a son, Danny Jolly and wife Beth of Union; a beloved grandson, John-Henry Ford Jolly of Union; a devoted companion, Newton “Papa” Cobb of Pacolet; three sisters: Carolyn Hughes of Union, Linda Wardell and Debbie Frey both of Enoree; a twin brother, Cary Hughes of Carlisle and a brother, Gerald Hughes of Georgia. Ms. Jolly was predeceased by sisters, Hazel Hodges, Barbara Hughes and Brenda Moore and a brother, John Hughes.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, September 4, 2015 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Jerusha Frances Small Eldridge, age 97 of Spencer, NC, widow of Oscar Franklin Eldridge, passed away Monday, August 31, 2015 in at Novant Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, NC.

Mrs. Eldridge was born in Arkadelphia, AK, July 26, 1918, a daughter of the late W.B. and Emma Foster Small.  Mrs. Eldridge was a homemaker and of the Church of God Faith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Miller and husband Leonard Deaton of Santa Maria, CA; three sons, Wilson Russell Eldridge and wife Sheila of Riverside, CA, Frank Eldridge and wife Michelle of Tucson, AZ and Jerry Dean Eldridge with whom she made her home in Spencer, NC; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including a niece Myra Wallen of Whitmire.  Mrs. Edlridge was predeceased by three sisters, Ruth Gregory, Judith Prince and Jane Freeman and four brothers, James, Charles, Fred and N.B Small.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Pastor Tommy Bishop. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Saturday from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the services.

Rev. Richard Hal Pendleton
Union, SC


Reverend Richard Hal Pendleton, Pastor Rick, went to be with Jesus August 29, 2015. Rick was born in Union, SC to Hal and Mildred McCarley Pendleton.  He graduated from Union High School in 1975, Furman University in 1979 with a BA in Religion and South Eastern Seminary in 1983 with a Masters of Divinity.

Reverend Pendleton has pastored for churches in Virginia, Florida and South Carolina. His longest tenure was at Concord Baptist Church in Frog Level Virginia, for over 15 years. His home church and last church was First Baptist of Union SC. Pastor Rick gave his life in humble faithful service to his God, his churches and his family. He was a devoted husband, father and brother.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Donna Eubanks Pendleton, four children—Richard Reese Pendleton, a Golden Knight stationed with the US Army at Fort Bragg NC, Bethany Pendleton Howell, a 1st grade teacher at Foster Park Elementary, her husband Kole Howell and her son Kolton Howell, Leah Pendleton, who is pursuing her Master’s in chemistry from Furman University, and Ethan Pendleton a second year cadet at The Citadel.

He is also survived by two sisters: Debbie Pendleton Rector and her family-husband, Tommy Rector, daughter Suzy Lawson Garner, her husband Michael Garner and their sons Hayden and Houston; Sherrie Pendleton Callahan and her family-husband Mike Callahan and their children Katy Callahan Henderson, her husband Anthony Henderson, their daughter Sarah Hope Henderson and Mikey Callahan.

A memorial service will be held 3:30 PM Thursday, September 3, 2015 at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Kevin James, Rev. Neil Keisler and Mr. Pat Gwinn. 

Deacons and staff of First Baptist Church and their families, members of the Union County Baptist Association and local ministers, members of the SC State Baptist Association, teachers of the Union County School District, the Concord Baptist Church Family of Virginia are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 5:00 until 7:00 PM Wednesday evening at the parsonage of First Baptist Church and also in the Fellowship Hall of the church following the services on Thursday.
