Willie Ozy Johnson Sullivan
Willie Ozy Johnson Sullivan was born in Union, South Carolina on October 16, 1924 and left this earthly world on September 26, 2014 in Newton, Massachusetts. She was just a few weeks from her 90th birthday. Her niece, Ann Kendrick Lindsey, was at her side and telling her of her and her family’s love for her. She was indeed beloved by her cherished family members who each knew that she was everlasting in her love and support of every family member. Each knew that she could be counted upon for her sympathetic listening, her wisdom, and the sharing of her faith in time of need. She herself was sustained by her unrelenting faith in our Lord.
She grew up on Johnson and Arthur Boulevards, and in her late teen years, graduated from Union High School and worked as a successful and beautiful model. She was a faithful member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where she gave much to the church through her musical skills. In time, she moved to Columbia, SC to help raise her niece, Ann Kendrick Lindsey, and to attend Draun Business School. Subsequently, she moved herself and her mother, Kitty Arizona Duckett Johnson, to the Washington, D.C. area where she worked as an administrator. In time she met and married her husband, Harry John Sullivan (deceased in 1985) who was a native of Connecticut. He was a veteran of World War II and fought in the battle of Normandy. Together, they enjoyed many happy years of marriage and life in the Washington area. During those years, she returned to school and attended college in Prince George’s County where she was known for her “A” average despite being older than the average student who was her peer.
During these years she was a member of Temple Hills Baptist Church where she sang, played the piano and the organ. She was also a member of her Garden Club, her Bridge Club, and her Swimming Club. In later years, she was active in the political associations in the area that supported senior citizens. She enjoyed her trips to the Boston area to visit her niece, Ann, and her family. She continued her activities until her declining health prevented her from doing so.
She loved life greatly and took enormous pleasure in nature and its beauty. She loved to watch bluejays, cardinals, trees flowering in the spring and turning in the fall, and all things that related to beauty. Her greatest goal was seeing that the right thing be done in a given situation and she was tenacious in her endeavors to achieve this goal.
She will be greatly missed by her nieces, Ann Kendrick Lindsey of Newton, MA, Joan Dulin Phillips and Gaye Dulin Kelly of Columbia, SC; her nephew, James Robert Kendrick, Jr. of Pawleys Island, SC; her nieces Susan and Bobbie Ann of Reading, PA, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
