Oliver Lee Navarrete, infant son of Andrew Navarrete and Amanda Fox passed away November 29, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Summer Jayln Hutchinson of the home; maternal grandparents, Jerry Fox and Lynn Fox; paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Parkman; a special aunt, Ophelia Sharpe; three uncles: EJ Hyler, Brandon Turner, and Jerry Fox, Jr.; and three aunts, Brittany Williams, Janet Osborne, and Tori Hollowinski.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday December 2, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home
 

Frances Lawson Wilson
Union, SC


Mrs. Frances Lawson Wilson, age 87, wife of James A. Wilson of 1437 Peach Orchard Rd., Lot 3, Union, passed away Monday, November 30, 2015 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Center.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Woodruff, SC May 16, 1928, a daughter of the late Jess Lawson and Martha Brewington Lawson. She retired from Enoree Mills after forty-one years of service. Mrs. Wilson was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Ann Bledsoe and husband Mike, Marcia Davis and husband Ronald and Mary Stanford; a son, James R Wilson and wife Darlene all of Union; two grandchildren: Chris Foster of Greenville and Jessica Mount and husband Chase of Columbia; a number of sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Ann and Mike Bledsoe, 709 Meansville Rd., Union.

Eugene Wayne Henderson
Union, SC


Mr. Eugene Wayne Henderson, age 67, widower of Ginger Loree Sinclair Henderson of 123 Seigler Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Henderson was born in Buffalo, March 27, 1948 a son of the late Ernest and Laura Mae Maness Henderson.  He was a retired machinist from WABCO and was a veteran of the US Army. Mr. Henderson was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Selenna Hyatt of Buffalo; a son Chad Henderson and wife Amy of Spartanburg; a sister, Elaine Sinclair and husband Larry of Union; three brothers, Gerald Henderson and wife Nell of Blair, VA, Kenneth Henderson and Edward Henderson both of Union; two grandchildren; Sierra Gregory and Reagan Henderson and an Uncle Furman Henderson. Mr. Henderson was predeceased by a sister, Earlene Suttles.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, November 30, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ross Wilson. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00 Monday prior to the services at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Elaine and Larry Sinclair, 511 Kelly Rd., Union.

Pauline M. Jenkins
Pacolet, SC


Mrs. Pauline Minton Jenkins, age 93, widow of Fred Jenkins, formerly of Pacolet, passed away Friday, November 27, 2015 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. Jenkins was born in Pacolet, February 23, 1922, a daughter of the late Henry Rastus Minton and Lila Kirby Minton. She was a graduate of Pacolet High School and retired from Spartan Grain Mill. Mrs. Minton was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Pacolet where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, a GA leader, Training Union Teacher and choir member. She always put God and church first in her live.

Surviving are a sister, Sara Hall and husband Bill of Belleville, MI; a brother, David Minton of Pacolet; four generations of nieces and nephews including a niece reared in the home, Jo Jenkins of Union; two nephews reared in the home, Dennis Jacques and Terry Jacques both of Spartanburg. Mrs. Jenkins was predeceased by three sisters, Frances M. Camby and husband Howard, Shirley M. Miller and husband Ronald, and Alline M. Jacques and husband Franklin. She was also predeceased by a brother, Herbert Minton and his wife Lois B. and a sister-in-law, Inez P. Minton.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, November 30, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Pacolet conducted by Rev. Tommy Sparks.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM Monday at the church prior to the services.

Frances H. Powell
Clinton, SC


Frances Haynes Powell, a native of Union, SC passed away November 19, 2015 at the Presbyterian Community, Clinton, SC where she recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Robert Furman Haynes and Inez Parks Haynes.

Frances was married to the late C. Allen “Ap” Powell and formerly lived at 116 Highland Drive in Union.  She and Mr. Powell were employed with Union County Schools for many years.

Frances is survived by her children, Connie Powell Kitchen, Jacksonville NC,   C. Allen Powell and Robert William Powell of Greenville, SC, seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She is remembered by family and friends as the epitome of a Southern lady -loving, kind, gracious, talented and a wonderful mother.

A memorial service for Frances will be held at the Presbyterian Community of SC in Clinton on December 7 at 10:30 am.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Union, 101 W. South St., Union, SC 29379 or the Presbyterian Community of SC, 801 Musgrove St., Clinton, SC 29325 in her honor.

Eleanor Hawkins
Clemson, SC


Eleanor Hawkins, previously of 605 East Main Union, SC, passed away peacefully at Clemson Downs November 21, 2015. Born July 19, 1916, Eleanor Merkel Schnepfe was the first born and last surviving of four daughters of Elsa Christine and Norman John Schnepfe of Edgewood, Maryland. After graduating from Bel Air High School at age 16, she attended Towson State Teachers’ College and began her teaching career in Baltimore, Maryland, where she met her future husband, Randolph Hawkins, and was one of the multitude of war brides being married in the “Summer of ’42.” Her war years were spent as a Navy bride in Charleston and later Beaufort, SC with in-between years serving as a working “Rosie” at Edgewood Arsenal while her husband was overseas.

After the war, she and Randolph returned to his family home in Union, SC, where she was a contributing member of the community for the next 64 years. After becoming a loving mother of three daughters, she re-established her teaching career in the mid 1950s, first, at in the Ottaray community, then at Foster Park Elementary where she retired in 1982. Because of her life-long love of books and reading, she transitioned from school teacher to school librarian in the mid 1960s. She was instrumental in establishing quality libraries in many sub-standard elementary schools throughout the county, so-existing due to the legacy of Jim Crow. Foster Park Elementary School library was named in her honor.

Her community activities included the following:  active member of Grace United Methodist Church, active member and president of the Foster Park PTA, membership in the Union Historical Society, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Friends of Union Carnegie Library, charter member and one-time president of the Union Cotillion, charter member of the Union Country Club. She was active in various church circles, book clubs, and bridge clubs. She believed one’s life-duty was to do for others. She lived this belief and was never idle. When she was not reading, she cooked, sewed, knitted, needlepointed, smocked, did crewel work, painted, made clothes and sweaters and blankets for herself, her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, her church and finally for total strangers by knitting caps and scarves for the Merchant Marine and delivering Meals on Wheels while into her 80s and 90s.

Eleanor Hawkins was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, and aunt. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. Virgil Randolph Hawkins, her three sisters, Mary Ann Price, Jean Clare Elliott, and Lois Mae O’Neill. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Teeple of Pickens, Christine Ehlies of Belton, and Mary Cecil Parker of Seneca; also five grandchildren, William Paul Parker, Dylan Hall Parker, Sarah Christine Teeple, William Harry Ehlies, and Timothy Randolph Ehlies.

Memorial services will be 3:00 Dec. 8 at Grace United Methodist Church with interment after the service. The family will receive visitors in the church parlor at 1:30. Holcomb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth “Lisa” Rinaca
Union, SC


Mrs. Elizabeth “Lisa” Rinaca, age 61, wife of Douglas R. Rinaca of 4627 Cross Keys Highway, Union, left to walk with the Lord on the sunny morning of November 27, 2015.

Mrs. Rinaca was born on February 26, 1954 a daughter of Elizabeth Richardson Wilburn and the late Wade Hampton Wilburn, Jr.  Lisa who was originally of Cross Keys, was a graduate of Union High School and found her way back home after attending Clemson University.  She completed a rewarding 30 year career with SCDDSN (Whitten Center). Mrs. Rinaca was on the Union County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the YMCA—Tennis Association.   Her life was filled with raising two sons, enjoying horses, tennis with her dear friends, yoga, travel, hiking and camping, gardening, her dogs Tilly and Picaro, and most of all, her family.  Those who knew her will carry with them her love and appetite for life for the days to come.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two sons, Rhett Wilburn Rinaca and wife Kristen of Laurens, SC and Franklin Monroe Rinaca and wife Danielle of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three grandchildren, Wilburn Henry Rinaca, Sue Ella Rose Rinaca, and Hampton Gaudet Rinaca; one sister, Gayle McCain and husband Luke of Pawleys Island, SC; two brothers, Frank Wilburn and wife Phylis of Union, SC and Buford Wilburn and wife Tricia of Batesburg Leesville, SC.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Allen Simpson.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Andrew Sherer, Adam Moates, Ben Stackhouse, Brook Sentell, Chuck Sanders, and Ian McCroskey.

Juline Seay Henderson
Jonesville, SC


Mrs. Juline Seay Henderson, age 76, wife of Bobby “Doc” Henderson, of 110 Haile St., Jonesville, went home to be with her Lord Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Henderson was born in Spartanburg, SC on October 22, 1939 a daughter of the late Woodrow W. Seay and Blanche Nichols Seay.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and mother-in-law, this was her greatest accomplishment.  Mrs. Henderson was a 1957 graduate of Jonesville High School where she was a cheerleader.  She was retired from the Union County School District having worked for 27 years as a teacher’s assistant at Jonesville Elementary School and had previously worked at Jonesville Products.  Mrs. Henderson was a faithful member of Jonesville Baptist Church for 60 years where she was a member of the Claudia Coleman Sunday School Class, served on the Hostess Committee, was a member of Happy Hearts, and worked with the youth of the church. She had a great love for God and her Savior Jesus Christ and showed it by the way she lived her life.  Children had a special place in her heart, she showed this love by allowing many children to live in her home.  Mrs. Henderson loved cooking and baking, for those who were ill or for special occasions.  She also loved spending time at her second home, Crescent Beach with family and friends.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 58 years are two sons, Bobby Henderson, Jr. of Columbia, and Tim Henderson and wife Deborah of Jonesville; a daughter, Leslie Parris and husband Scott of Jonesville; a sister, Brenda Langdale of Spartanburg; two granddaughters, Laura and Leigh Parris both of Jonesville; two grandsons, Tucker Henderson of Jonesville and Blaine Gonzalez of Union; two great-grandsons, Andrew and Max Gonzalez of Pacolet; a special cousin who was like a sister, Betty Neil Quinn of Pacolet; a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.  She was predeceased by a special grandmother Laura Ada Nichols.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Cannon and her special friend, Mrs. Debbie Littlejohn.  Burial will follow at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be, Doran Eaves, Lynn Blackwell, Lynn Parker, Bryan Evans, Tommy Quinn, and Brad Parris.  The following are asked to form the honorary escort, members of the Claudia Coleman Sunday School Class and former and current teachers of Jonesville Elementary/Middle School.

Visitation will be held 1:00 PM until 2:45 PM at Jonesville Baptist Church prior to the services.

The family wishes to extend a special “thank you” to Dr. James D. Bearden, his nurse Reggie Scoggins, Dr. Patricia Griffin, Sharon Bartlet, and Hospice Care of South Carolina  for all of their love, care, and compassion that was shown to Mrs. Henderson during her illness.

Joe Michael “Jo Jo” Wix

Mr. Joe Michael “Jo Jo” Wix, age 71, husband of Virginia “Ginger” Johnson Wix of 253 Rogerstown Rd., Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Wix was born in Union, SC September 22, 1944, a son of the late Joe A. Wix and Thelma Wade Wix. He was a graduate of Union High School and received a degree in business from Rutledge College. Mr. Wix retired as District Manager of Spinx Company, Inc. and Marathon Oil Company. He was a Veteran of the US Navy and had served in the Vietnam War on Submarine USS Salmon. Mr. Wix attended Covenant Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Amy Jo Wix of Spartanburg; a son, Shane Wix of Washington State; three step-daughters: Stephanie Willard of Spartanburg, Wendy Willard of Honea Path and Jennifer Pruitt and husband Matt of Boiling Springs; six grandchildren; two sisters: Lou Ann Whelchel of Spartanburg and Terri Lynn Wix of Charleston and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Wix was predeceased by a son, Toney Alan Wix.

Memorial services with Military Honors  will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Wayne Cook and Rev. John Lee.

The nurses and staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held in the church immediately following the service.

Margaret Pridemore Sumner

Mrs. Margaret Pridemore Sumner, age 82 of 402 Railroad Street, Union, widow of Clarence Paul “Tink” Sumner, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mrs. Sumner was born in Union, SC, a daughter of the late “GN” Pridemore and Flora Hoglen Pridemore. She was a member of the Potter’s House.

Surviving are a daughter, Arlene Cook of the home; five grandchildren: Denise Howell, Marie Davis, Paul Watts, Joy Wells and Sandy Davis; eight grandchildren and a brother, Franklin Pridemore and wife Brenda of Union. Mrs. Sumner was predeceased by a daughter, Denise Nance, a son, Clarence Paul Sumner, Jr., three sisters, Agnes Cagle, Altie Floyd and Mae Tindle and two brothers, EK Pridemore and Newton Pridemore.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 28, 2015 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Don Moore.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday in the chapel prior to the service.

Bobby Wilkins
Buffalo, SC


Mr. Bobby Wilkins, age 70, husband of Linda Hutcherson Wilkins of 287 Sweetwater Dr., Buffalo, passed away Monday, November 23, 2015 at Union Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. Wilkins was born in Wilmington, NC, February 22, 1945, a son of the late James Curmey Wilkins and Grace Eubanks Wilkins. He was a retired welder and a veteran of the US Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Robbie Free of Union and Lori Souther of North Carolina; two sisters, Mickey Barber and Linda Parker both of Raleigh, NC; a granddaughter, Michelle Dye; two grandsons, Steven Roark II and Tyler Roark all of Union; great-grandchildren, Reagan Wicker, Aiden Roark, Gauge Taylor, Cheyenne Dye, Brennan Roark and Gracie Roark.

A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.

The family will be at the home, 287 Sweetwater Dr., Buffalo.

Brady Smart
Cowpens, SC


Mr. Brady Smart, age 65, husband of Dovie Fowler White Smart of 110 Oakridge Dr., Cowpens, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Smart was born in Union, July 21, 1950, a son of the late Robert E. and Mildred Smith Smart.  He was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Smart was a former electrician with Spartan Steel Co. and attended Oakdale Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the US Marines having served in the Vietnam War.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Sharon Whitmire of Cowpens and Candice White of Summer Land Key, FL; two brothers, Robert Dale Smart and Charles William Smart both of Cowpens; four grandchildren, Gage Whitmire, Mason Whitmire, Hunter Whitmire and Jared Stone; and one great-grandsons, Braylon Whitmire.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 27, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Chaplain Andy Jones. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Smart’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 PM Friday at the funeral home prior to the services.

The family will be at the home, 110 Oakridge Dr., Cowpens.

Harold G. Montgomery
Union, SC


Mr. Harold Glenn Montgomery, age 76, husband of Terrie Henderson Montgomery of 774 Philippi Church Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Montgomery was born in Union, August 9, 1939, a son of the late Robert Ellie Montgomery and Ida Mae Howe Montgomery. Mr. Montgomery was a devoted son, caring for his mother during her last illness.

He was a retired textile worker and was instrumental in establishing Kla-Pat Industries alongside Carl Patrick and Tom Clarey.  Mr. Montgomery was a lifetime member of the Masons, Lodge #244 and was a Scottish Rites Mason, a member of the Union Elks Lodge and the Union Shrine Club where he had served two terms as president. He received a Master Gardeners degree and a Master Bee Keepers degree from Clemson Extension but was an avid Gamecock fan holding season tickets as long as he health permitted. In his younger days, he was also a certified scuba diver. Mr. Montgomery was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Johnny Montgomery of Union; a sister, Bette M. Stone of Abbeville; a god-daughter, Cheyenne Sierra Gist, reared in the home; two nephews, Scott Glenn Montgomery and wife Lynn of Yorktown, VA and Robert Craig Montgomery and wife Carol of Marysville, CA; a sister-in-law, Cathy H. Bailey and husband Mark Edward of Union; and special friends, Jeffery and Chyrstal Gist, Brittneigh Stribble and Hannah Coffer. Mr. Montgomery was predeceased by two brothers and their wives, Joe Edward and Gladys Montgomery and Robert Fred and Jeannine Montgomery. He was also predeceased by a brother-in-law, Davis Gene Stone.

 A celebration of life service will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Mr. Tim Svetlan.

The following are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 12:45 PM Tuesday to form the honorary escort: Don and Barbara Davis, Donald Ray Sanders, Gene L. and Brenda Childers, Sherry Nash, Vivian R. Craig, Joyce Toney, Steve and Cheryl Morris, Julian Ivey and members of the Union Elks Lodge and the Union Shrine Club.

Mrs. Brenda Brooks Jeter, age 74, of 101 Hidden Hill Rd., Union, widow of C.B. Jeter, Jr., passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at the Union Medical Center.

Mrs. Jeter was born in Union, January 22, 1941, a daughter of the late Elbert L. Brooks and Louise Foster Brooks.

Surviving are a brother, Russell D. Brooks and wife Mary M. Brooks; a grandson, Jeremiah “Jeb” Jeter; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Jeter;  a niece, Meredith Brooks and two nephews, Kevin and Todd Brooks all of Union.  Mrs. Jeter was predeceased by a daughter, Julie Jeter; two sons, Steven Jeter and Camillus “Cam” Jeter, III and two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Brooks and Marion R. Brooks.

Graveside services were held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Jeter Cemetery.

Mrs. Rebecca Whitehead “Wally” Tyler, age 61, widow of Larry Tyler, passed away at her home.

Mrs. Tyler was born in Union, February 25, 1954, a daughter of Billie Grace Vaughan Whitehead of Union and the late Frank Whitehead. She was a graduate of Union High School and was employed with CPE Industries of Union.  Mrs. Tyler was a devoted member of Morningside Baptist Church and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Jenifer Ford Bradley and husband Mitch of Chapin; a sister, Patricia Alman of Ohio; step-children including Ashley Tyler and fiancée Dabriada of Union; seven grandchildren: Samantha Hogan, Dylan Tyler, Tori Tyler, Joshua Tyler, Jada Tyler, Madelyn Tyler and Gabriel Tyler; two great-grandchildren, Chloe Guy and Aubrey Beaman.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Aulbrey Calvert.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening also at Morningside Baptist Church.

The family will be at their respective homes.

Daisy D. Kinney
Laurens, SC


Mrs. Daisy Davis Kinney, age 93, wife of Richard H. Kinney, passed away Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center.

Mrs. Kinney was born in Buffalo, October 1, 1922, a daughter of the late Hardie Lee Davis and Bertha Pearl Hipps Davis.  During their 68 year marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Kinney served as missionaries for 18 years with the International Missions Board of the Southern Baptist Convention having traveled to Switzerland, Austria and the Middle East. Mr. Kinney was an auditor for the Missions Board and Mrs. Kinney served as his secretary.  The Kinneys are members of the First Baptist Church of Laurens.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, November 23, 2015 at Union Memorials Gardens conducted by Rev. Rick Letson and Rev. Russell Dean.

A memorial service will also be held at 2:00 PM Monday at the Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center in Laurens. Visitation will follow the services.

Frances Haynes Powell, a native of Union, SC passed away November 19, 2015 at the Presbyterian Community, Clinton, SC where she recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Robert Furman Haynes and Inez Parks Haynes.

Frances was married to C. Allen “Ap” Powell (deceased) and formerly lived at 116 Highland Drive in Union.  She and Mr. Powell were employed with Union County Schools for many years.

Frances is survived by her children, Connie Powell Kitchen, Jacksonville NC,   C. Allen Powell and Robert William Powell of Greenville, SC, seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She is remembered by family and friends as the epitome of a Southern lady -loving, kind, gracious, talented and a wonderful mother.

A memorial service for Frances will be held at the Presbyterian Community of SC in Clinton on December 7 at 10:30 am.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Union, SC or the Presbyterian Community of SC, Clinton, SC in her honor.

Mrs. Thelma Louise Heatherly, age 86, formerly of Mudbridge Rd., Buffalo, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Pruitt Health Care in Six Mile.

Mrs. Heatherly was born in Buffalo, March 2, 1929, a daughter of the late Harley and Geneva Henson Heatherly.  She was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church. 

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Burbage of Easley and Gail Mitchell of Conway; two sisters, Mary Ellen Moore and Ruby Fowler both of Union; two brothers, Martin Heatherly and Edward Heatherly both of Buffalo; six grandchildren: Darren Burbage of Easley, Tonya Harrington of Denver, CO, Randall Burbage of Greenville, Rhonda Mitchell of Dillon, Angel Cook of Aynor and Danny Mitchell of Conway; numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Heatherly was predeceased by a sister, Myrtle Robinson and four brothers, Dewey Heatherly, Ray Heatherly, Jimmy Heatherly and Jerry Heatherly.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ron Towery.  Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Woodward was born September 15, 1937 a daughter of the late Earsy E. Cash and Nell Wild Cash.  She was a graduate of Rosmand High School.

Mrs. McDermott was born in Union, SC November 30, 1955, a daughter of the late Arthur Jack McGlothan and Ethel Southerland McGlothan. She was a homemaker and a member of Jonesville Church of God.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Tammy S. Odom of Union; three sisters: Mary Taft of Union, Joyce Dawkins of Jonesville and Nancy Phillips and husband Sam of Union; four grandchildren: Dylan Sowers, Jessica Sowers, Michael Steele and Grace Odom. Mrs. McDermott was predeceased by a daughter, Tracey Steele and two sisters, Brenda Carter and Libby Gardin.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Chaplin Joey Bodie.

Mrs. Sally “Pid” Vanderford Palmer, age 89, of 271 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Union widow of Walter Donald Palmer, passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Union, SC on August 10, 1926 a daughter of the late Pete Vanderford and Jennie Candler Vanderford.  She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from Conso.  Mrs. Palmer was an active member of Lockhart First Baptist Church as long as her health permitted and was also active with Relay for Life.

Surviving are two sons, Ryan Palmer and wife Rhoda of Franklin, TN and Barry Palmer and wife Dale of Union; three granddaughters, Jennifer P. Marvin of Union, Joni P. Crocker of Union, and Lindsay P. Carter of Shelby, NC; four great-grandchildren, Gracie Crocker, Reese Crocker, Callie Crocker, and Eli Crocker; and one brother, Mack Vanderford.  She was predeceased by two sisters, Vernelle “Doodie” Vanderford and Kathleen Revels and one brother, Clarence “Buddy” Vanderford.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 20, 2015 at Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Delos Blanton and Rev. Brad Goodale.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Waynesville, NC, October 31, 1956, a daughter of the late Charles Bryan Medford, Sr. and Ruth Marie Seay Sherrill.  She was a graduate of Union High School and was employed with Dollar General Distribution in Jonesville.  Mrs. Gregory was a member of Crestview Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Gena Marie Gregory of Union; a son, Bryce Jordan Gregory of Mount Pleasant; three sisters, Mary Ann Murphy and husband Robert of Buffalo, Bonita Turner and husband Bill and Judy Scott and husband Kenny all of Union; three brothers, Brian Charles Medford of Steadman, NC, Billy Medford and wife Barbara of Union and Wid Medford and wife Marlene of Ohio; two grandchildren, Kaden Bryce Gregory and Baylee Addison Gregory both of Mount Pleasant and a special friend Janet Jennings of Union.  Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by a brother Darryl Medford.

Mr. Austin was born in Union, May 23, 1943, a son of the late Roy Austin and Alice Peahuff Austin. He retired from Milliken & Co – Monarch Plant and was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. Mr. Austin was a Veteran of the US Army having served in the Vietnam War.

Surviving are a son, Scott Austin and wife Crystal of Jonesville; two sisters: Mary Lois Grant with whom he made his home and Nellie Alexander of Roebuck; a brother-in-law, Walter Faulk of Union; two grandchildren: Dustin Austin and wife Stacie and Tiffany Turner and husband Jeffery; two great-grandchildren: Nathan “Little Man” Austin and Bentley Turner; numerous nieces and nephews including a special niece, Donna Carver of Fountain Inn. Mr. Austin was predeceased by a son, Timothy Mark Austin, a sister, Johnnie Ruth Faulk and a brother, William David Leroy Austin, Jr.

Mr. Charles McMurray age 81, husband of Carolyn O’Shields McMurray of 2242 Hwy 72, Whitmire, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 at his home.

Mr. McMurray was born in Whitmire, SC March 23, 1934, a son of the late William L. McMurray and Nellie Mae Yarborough McMurray. He was a graduate of Whitmire High School and had attended Presbyterian College. Mr. McMurrary retired from the US Air Force following twenty-three years of service. Following his retirement, Mr. McMurray retired from  Carter’s Toyota of Newberry and also NAPA Auto Parts in Whitmire. He was a member of Whitmire First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Reggie McMurray of Whitmire; a brother, Lou McMurray of Swainsboro, GA; four grandchildren: John McCarley and wife Leigh Ann of Kinards, Lesley McMurray Gregory and husband Jonathan of Union, Charlie McCarley and Nicole McMurray both of Whitmire and four great-grandchildren. Mr. McMurray was predeceased by a daughter, Jodi Lynn McMurray and a son, Charles Randal McMurray.

John English Heath

Mr. John English Heath, age 98, of 114 Fant Lane, Union, widower of Sarah Wilson Heath, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Heartland of Union.

Mr. Heath was born in Monroe, NC on July 21, 1917 a son of the late William Joseph Heath and Elizabeth English Heath.  He graduated Monroe High School on May 3, 1934 and began working at Belk in High Point, NC on June 4, 1934 at the age of 17.  Mr. Heath continued to work for Belk for 16 years.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, serving from 1942-1945, taking part in the North African Campaign as a flight engineer and later finished pilot training.  In 1946, he moved to Union and partnered in the Williamson 5 & 10 Cent Store in Whitmire, SC from 1947 until 1948.  In 1951 he opened the Ideal Gift Shop.  On November 28, 1953 he married Sara Wilson a Union native.  They moved in to their home on Fant Lane in August of 1959.  Mr. Heath was very active at Grace United Methodist Church where he was involved with the Neighbor Helping Neighbor, Salkehatchie Project, and many other mission and civic projects in the area.

Surviving are a sister, Frances Heath Henderson of Wilkesboro, NC; nine nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by two brothers, William Joseph Heath, Jr. and Benjamin Dawson Heath and two sisters, Margaret Heath Culbertson and Elizabeth Heath Finley.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. David Bauknight.  Burial with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Harold S. Blackmon, Sr., age 94, of 714 Arthur Blvd., Union, widower of Wallace Erma Sprouse Blackmon, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Blackmon was born on April 26, 1921 in Heathsprings, SC a son of the late Thomas Mickle Blackmon and Margaret Creighton Blackmon.  He was a graduate of Lancaster High School.  Mr. Blackmon was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.  He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, JoAnne Lipscomb and husband Jerry of Union; a son, Harold Blackmon Jr. and wife Virginia of Union; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Miss Medora Elizabeth “Lib” Johns, age 97, of 1817 Jonesville Highway, Union passed away Friday, November 6, 2015 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Center.

Miss Johns was born in Union, SC on March 12, 1918 a daughter of the late Rufus Norman Johns and Cora Lancaster Johns.  She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Eagle Grocery Company.  Miss Johns was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School Treasurer for 62 years and was a member of Louise Willard Circle for many years.  Libby as her nieces and nephews called her, lived in the home of her brother Rufus Wagner and Dorothy Johns and was a loving part of their life.

Surviving are a niece Barbara J. Baber and husband Wayne of Union; two nephews, Robert Johns of Union and Johnny Johns of Atlanta, GA; three great nephews, Jeremy Johns, Matthew Johns, and Nicholas Johns; and nine great-great nephews.

Mrs. Dorothy Berry Humphries, age 77, wife of Richard “Tommy” Humphries of 1420 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, entered her eternal home, Thursday, November 5, 2015.

Mrs. Humphries was born in Newberry Co., October 29, 1938, a daughter of the late William Yates Berry and Verna Mae Heller Berry.  She was a graduate of Union High School and worked alongside her husband in his business. Mrs. Humphries was a devote member of Augsburg Lutheran Church where she had served as treasurer and was a member of the Lutheran Women of the church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. 

Mrs. Humphries was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Lisa Humphries Rogers of Union and Ann Humphries Clayton and husband John of Springfield, OH; a son, Stanley Humphries and wife Melissa of Silverstreet; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Humphries was predeceased by two sisters, Patricia Berry. Winburn and Violet Berry.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Sunday, November 8, 2015 at Augsburg Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Al Potter and Chaplain Joey Bodie.  Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry.

Mr. Eubanks was born in Gaffney, December 15, 1935, a son of the late Dewey Eubanks and Grace Waters Eubanks. He retired from Cherokee Finishing and attended Grassy Pond Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Edward Eubanks and wife Kim of the home and Charlie Eubanks and wife Shanna of Gaffney; three grandchildren: Becca and Jillian Eubanks and Sara Evans Shetley; two sisters: Ruth Thompson of Gaffney and Peggy Montgomery and husband Tommy of Rock Hill; and a brother, Ronnie Eubanks and wife Carolyn of Gaffney. Mr. Chambers was born in Union, November 1, 1962, a son of Shirley Clendenin Haney of  Union and the late James N. Chambers, Jr.  He was a graduate of Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.  Mr. Chambers was a volunteered with the Hill Top Fire Department, the Spartanburg County EMS, the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. He was a former member of FOP and was a Mason.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a step-father, William Haney, Jr. of Union; a daughter, Mary Beth Chambers of Spartanburg; two sons, Mark N. Chambers, Jr. and girlfriend Mary Eleanor Kelleher of Spartanburg and Dyrell Chambers of Boiling Springs; four sisters, Holly Patterson and husband Michael, and Joy Chambers all of  Union, Pamela Moore and husband Mike, and Melody Wilt and husband Chip all of Rock Hill; three brothers, Charles David Chambers and wife Nancy of Buffalo, James N. Mr. Donald A. “Snort” Knox, age 78 of 2610 Lockhart Hwy, Union, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mr. Knox was born in Union, SC March 31, 1937, a son of the late Cecil T. Knox and Mattie Clary Knox. He was retired from Knox Tire and Appliance and was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church. Mr. Knox was a loving brother, uncle and a friend to all who met him.

Mr. Knox is survived by a brother, Tommy F. Knox; two sisters: Jenell Knox of the home and Sadie Inman of Union; a niece, Melinda Littlejohn and husband Jeff; two nephews: Tommy Knox, II and wife Jennie and Bruce Inman and wife Melissa all of Union and special great-nieces and great-nephews. Mr. Knox was predeceased by a sister, Pansy “Pat” Knox and a  brother, Eldridge T. “Early Bird” Knox.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Chris Gulledge and Rev. Bob Cato. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Knox, II, Tommy “Tate” Knox, III, Lee Littlejohn, Bruce W. Inman, Otis Davis, Howard Wells, William Jolly and Boyd McAbee. Honorary Pallbearers will be Alex Freeman, Wayne Willard, Carrol Alexander, Larry Morris, Roger Knox, Brent Knox, Lyndell Knox, Bobby Joe Gibbs and John Wayne Brandon.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at SR Holcombe Funeral Home. The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to Blue Ridge Hospice, nurses and staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and special caregivers, Laura “Noots” Moss and Mary Price.

Mr. James H. “Ozzie” Osborne, age 73 of 100 A Cogdill Plaza, husband of Elease “Sister” Sumner Osborne, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Osborne was born in Union, March 21, 1942, a son of the late Guy and Rebecca Clendenin Osborne. He was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant and was a member of Sumner Memorial Baptist Church.  Mr. Osborne was a former member of the S.C. National Guard.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Jamie Osborne of Union; a son, Johnny Osborne and wife Lisa of Pauline; two sisters, Brenda Dubnik and husband Andy of Maryland, and Hassie Vaughan and husband Jim of Union; a brother, Tommy Osborne of Maryland; grandchildren: Brandy Sartor, Keith Pike, Jimmy Medford, Candy Smith, Jonathan Osborne, Jayna Osborne and Taylor Mahan and fourteen great-grandchildren.  Mr. Osborne was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Osborne Pike and a brother, Guy Osborne.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 6, 2015 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Minister Johnny Osborne.

Active pallbearers will be Keith Pike, Stan Lawter, James Medford, Robert Sumner, James Sumner and Mike Sartor.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Lewis D. Brackins, age 75, of 105 Walker St. Union, widower of Emma Cannon Brackins, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Heartland of Union.

Mr. Brackins was born in Pacolet, March 18, 1940, a son of the late Joseph and Marie Schultz Brackins. He was retired from J.P. Stevens, Whitmire Plant and was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Kim Marler and fiancée Thomas Foley of Union; a granddaughter, Angel Sizemore of Union; three sisters, Elizabeth Spencer and Margaret Thompson both of Pacolet and Joyce Spencer of Spartanburg; and two brothers, Doyle Brackins of Greenwood and David Brackins of Union.

Mr. Brackins was predeceased by a sister, Frankie Quinn and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 6, 2015 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith.  Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Lindsey Cannon, Roy Brackins, Brian Brackins, Dennis Tucker, Wilson Brackins and Donnie Warren.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Mrs. Jeanette Horne Fowler, age 75, of 305 Glendale Rd., Union, widow of Otis Fowler, passed away Monday, November 2, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Fowler was born in Union, September 25, 1940, a daughter of the late Ottis and Mittie Horne. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church and a loving mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter, Bobbie Ann Gregory and husband Jason with whom she made her home; three sisters, Sarah Adams and Patricia Harmon both of Jonesville and Gerlene Burnette of Florida; and two grandchildren, Taylor Lynne Gregory and Jacob Gregory.  She was predeceased by a daughter, Doris Lynne Canupp, a son, Mikey Fowler and two brothers, Sampson Horne and John Henry Horne.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Active pallbearers will be John Horne, Kenny Ivey, Allen O’Dell, Steve Lewis, Rob Capps and John Cremeans.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Mr. Jonathan Daniel “John J.J.” Griffin, age 28, husband of Kauai Lei Burton Griffin of 1418 Peach Orchard Rd., Lot 25, Union, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015.

Mr. Griffin was born in Union, a son of Beulah J. Inman of Union and the late Sam Inman. He was a self-employed construction worker.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons: Jonathan R. Griffin and Anthony A. Griffin; two sisters: Lillie (Susie Q. Inman) Sherfield and Sierra Sherfield; two brothers: Sam Inman and wife Susan and John Inman and wife Kristi; a number of nieces and nephews: Amanda Inman, Harmony Stafford, Emma Inman, L.J. and Josh Inman and
Andy Inman and J.C. Pratt; best friends, Michael Crocker and Nick Davis.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 6, 2015 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Rick Cook.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dudd, Charles, Chris, Paul, Travis, Lonnie, Mickey Wilson and Tom Tom.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Friday in the chapel prior to the service.

Mrs. Janice Kent Austin, age 63 wife of Douglas R. Austin of 335 Meadow Woods Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Austin was born February 8, 1952 a daughter of the late Ornan W. Kent and Barbara J. Kent.  She was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Sarah Rhinehart and husband Mark of Union; two sons, Randy Austin and wife Malisa of Talladega, AL and Gene Austin and wife Stephanie of Supply, NC; a brother, Harold David Kent of Lockhaven, PA; a nephew, Matthew Wayne Kent of Bloomsburg, PA; twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Rick Cook.

Visitation will be held 7:00 until 9:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
