Etta T. Smith

Mrs. Etta Tucker Smith, age 88, formerly of Union, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, SC.

Mrs. Smith was born in Union, January 16, 1929, a daughter of the late Louis Lee and Fannie “Dolly” Tucker. She was a graduate of West Springs High School and the Isothermal Community College in Rutherford, NC for Nursing Aid. She worked at several hospital auxiliaries before going into retail where she worked at Cato’s and The Men’s Clothing Store in Union. She was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church. Mrs. Smith was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed gardening and ceramics. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and caring friend. She moved to be near her daughter in 2003 where she continued to reside.

Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly L. Smith of Savannah, GA; three grandchildren, Michael Smith-Foot of Morganton, GA, Thomas Smith of Wilmington, NC, and Andrew Foot of Crawfordville, GA and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church in her honor. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens.

Patricia Mae Palmer
Lockhart, SC


Mrs. Patricia Mae Crocker Palmer, age 75, wife of Robert “R.D.” Palmer of 112 S. 2nd Street, Lockhart, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Regional Hospice House, Spartanburg, SC.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Lockhart, SC February 17, 1942, a daughter of the late Ralph L. Crocker and Frances Dill Crocker. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and retired from Her Majesty. Mrs. Palmer was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Tammy Lancaster of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Jerry Crocker and wife Cathy of York and two grandsons: Dylan Lancaster and Tyler Lawson.

Memorial services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, May 27, 2017 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Sam Baines.

Visitation will be held in the chapel following the service.

Donald F. Scott
Sharon, SC


Mr. Donald F. Scott, age 81, husband of Margaret Lewis Scott of 4311 Cabal Road, Sharon, SC passed away, Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Mary Black Hospital.

Mr. Scott was born in Manlius, New York, April 13, 1936 a son of the late Joseph Scott Thomas and Marion Ina Briggs Thomas. He was a graduate of Fayetteville Manlius High School and a veteran of the U.S. Marines. Mr. Scott formally worked for Auto Glass.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Sheila Ganny and Kelly Dollinger both of New York; a sister, Ellen Hinds of New York; two brothers, Joseph Scott and wife Linda and Martin Scott both of New York; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Sylvia Snowden Knighton

Mrs. Sylvia Snowden Knighton, age 94 of 730 N. Duncan Bypass, widow of Jay B. Knighton, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Knighton was born in Cabarrus, NC June 30, 1922 a daughter of the Allie Snowden and Lena Reagan Snowden Garner.  She was a member of the Union Church of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Joan Davis of Union and Judy Ford and husband Tommy of Buffalo; two sisters, Ada Mae Ashe and husband Al of Vermont and Bertha Stradley of Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Wayne Davis, Corey Davis and wife Andrea, Mark Davis, Brad Ford and wife Courtnee, Suzette Bates, and Jay Ford and wife Ashley; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond Snowden, Eugene Garner, and Donald Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Union Church of God conducted by Pastor Stewart Anderson and Chaplin Andrew Fisher.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens

Active pallbearers will be Wayne Davis, Mark Davis, Corey Davis, Dillion Davis, Cole Davis, and Brad Ford.  The following are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort, Karen Lawson, Darlene Gregory, Sonja Pruitt, and the nurses and staff Spartanburg Regional Hospice.

Visitation will be held 2:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday prior to the services at the church.

Larry Eugene Duckett
Union, SC


Mr. Larry Eugene Duckett, age 60, husband of Janice Kingsmore Duckett of 3528 Cross Keys Highway, Union, passed away, Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Heartland of Union.

Mr. Duckett was born in Union, July 18, 1956 a son of the late Raymond Duckett and Ruby Eaves Duckett.  He retired from Bilo having worked at both the Union and Clinton Stores as the Meat Market Manager.  Mr. Duckett was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church.  He was an active Cattle Farmer and was a member of the Union County Cattlemen Association and the Union County Poultry Club.  Mr. Duckett was a big Elvis fan.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and was a Papa to any child he knew.

Surviving in addition to his wife are, three children, Chris Duckett and wife DeAnn of Union, Jill Maness and husband Greg of Buffalo, and Clayton Duckett and wife Brandy of Union; one sister, Linda Kingsmore of Jonesville; one brother, Ricky Duckett of Union; eight grandchildren, Colton Duckett, Alison Fowler, Trevor Duckett, Jessica Wood, Alexis Fowler, Austin Duckett, Gracie Duckett, and Kinley Duckett; expecting one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 6:00 PM Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham and Rev. Carroll Caldwell.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Monty Cooke, Bryan Brackins, Thomas Trammell, Bryce Duckett, Brett Duckett, and Tyler Kingsmore.  Honorary pallbearers will be, Randy Wilburn, Dean Gregory, Norris Fowler, Tommy Inman, Dennis “Bunt” Trammell, R.E. Gallman, Keith Davis and Mr. Duckett’s friends and co-workers from Bilo of Union and Clinton.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family would like to express their love and thanks to the Nurses and Staff of Heartland of Union for the wonderful care and attention given to both Larry and Janice over the last several months.

Lewis L. Clayton

Mr. Lewis Lee Clayton, age 84, husband of Annie Belue Clayton of 4242 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Clayton was born in Greer, September 23, 1932, a son of the late Lester Lee Clayton and Helen Ford Clayton Gregory.  He retired after 21 years with the US Navy having served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Afterwards, Mr. Clayton retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing. He was a member of the American Legion Post 22 and was also a Mason and a Shriner.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Patti Hall of Spartanburg, Cathy Dillard of Pacolet and Linda Clayton of Union; a sister, Pauline Hefner of Rock Hill; two brothers, Sam Clayton of Union and Bobby Clayton of Jonesville; and seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Clayton was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Lynn Walker and Erlene Clayton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday May 18, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Steve Lemons. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Thursday at the funeral chapel prior to the services.

Roger Dale Ford

Mr. Roger Dale Ford, age 62, husband of Donna Harris Ford of 259 Kelly Rd., Union, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ford was born in Union, January 9, 1955 a son of the late Robert E. Ford, Sr. and Frances Reynolds Ford.  He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and received an Associate Degree in Forestry from Horry Georgetown Technical College.  Mr. Ford was retired from McFarland Cascade, formerly known as United Lumber.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Katheryn Frances Ford of Port St. Lucie, FL and Anna Rose Sawyer of Union; two sons, Joshua K. Ford and wife Michelle of Inman and Joseph Matthew Sawyer of Union; a sister, Kate Ford Huggins and husband Ronnie of Union; a brother, Bobby Ford and wife Shirley of Boiling Springs; and three grandchildren, Lora Ford, Lexie Ford, and Irving Ford.  Mr. Ford was predeceased by two grandchildren, Evan and Lana Ford, two brothers, John Craig Ford and Donald Eugene Ford and his in-laws, Joseph and Sarah Harris.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM Monday, May 15, 2017 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 until 5:00 PM at the church Monday prior to the services.

Elsie B. Russell

Mrs. Elsie Blackmon Russell, age 88, of 549 Pineland Rd., Union, widow of Elijah Paul Russell passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Russell was born in Lancaster, SC, January 5, 1929, a daughter of the late Fred and Clara Baker Blackmon.  She was a graduate of Lancaster High School and was retired from Jon Wolfe Industries in 1999.

Mrs. Russell was a faithful member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn R. Carver and husband Larry D. Carver of Fishersville, VA; a son, Stanley Paul Russell of the home; and two brothers, Ned Blackmon and wife Margaret and Donald Blackmon and wife Nancy all of Lancaster. Mrs. Russell was predeceased by two brothers, Chalmers Blackmon and Bryan Blackmon.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:30PM Saturday at the church prior to the services.

Lloyd McLendon Sutherland
Spartanburg, S.C.


Lloyd McLendon Sutherland of Spartanburg died Tuesday, May 9th, 2017 at his home. Mr. Sutherland, 67, was born in Union, SC on June 17, 1949.

He was the son of the late Sara McLendon Sutherland and H. Lloyd Sutherland, DVM. Lloyd was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1967, a graduate of Auburn University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy. Lloyd was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union, and earned the Eagle Scout award. He was a devoted Auburn football fan and an avid fisherman. Lloyd served with the South Carolina Army National Guard for 21 years and retired as a major.  He was the medical platoon leader of the Fourth Battalion 118thInfantry.

Mr. Sutherland was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sisters Sally (Bobby) Lyles of Columbia, Catherine (Eddie) Gaither of Greenwood and Jane Clyburn of Camden; two nieces and two nephews: Sara Catherine (Courtney) Corbett, Virginia (Charlie) Clyburn-Ipock, Sandlin (Danielle) Gaither and Cason Gaither. Also, very devoted first cousins, Gene Fant Reid and Scott Fant.

The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Lloyd’s caregiver, Shannon Snow, also, to Norris Fowler for his leadership and assistance with Lloyd’s service and to his family.

Funeral services will be held at Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, May 14, at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Melinda Inabinett Wages, age 65, wife of Benjamin Wages of 2105 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Wages was born in Union, December 8, 1951, a daughter of the late Ronald L. and Agnes Tucker Inabinett. She was a graduate of Union High School and had earned an associate degree in business. Mrs. Wages was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Bethany Sunday School class and was also a member of the Clemson Extension Quilt Club.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Ben Wages and wife Letitia and Ed Wages all of Buffalo; two sisters, Becky I. Billings and husband Eric of Enoree and Pam I. Farmer and husband Sammy of Pauline; and four grandchildren, Rett Wages, Kayden Wages, Jonathan Wages and Jaryn Wages.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be James Inabinett, Timmy Sykes, Russell Brooks, Eric Billings, Sammy Farmer, and Ben Moseley.

Bobbie Ruth Cudd

Mrs. Bobbie Ruth Greer Cudd, age 90, entered her heavenly home, while resting at Regional Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, May 6, 2017. She was the widow of J.T Cudd.

Mrs. Cudd was born in Union, SC, on July 14, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Walter Jack Greer and Lillian Bailey Greer. She attended Union High School. A dedicated employee, she retired from Community Cash Grocery store. Mrs. Cudd was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church for sixty-one years, where she had been an active member of the Young at Heart, Women’s Missionary of Union and the Ladies Sunday School Class III of her church. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and sharing with others. Miss Bobbie Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her quick wit and laughter will be missed by all.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan James and husband Mike of Greenville; two sons, David Cudd and wife Donna of Union and Rick Cudd of Moore; four grandchildren, Richie Cudd of Inman, Candice Cudd Hardiman and husband Jeff of Maryville, TN, Jon Cudd and wife Brooke of Adairsville, GA, Brittany Cudd Fussell and husband Austin of Moore; six great-grandchildren, Storm, Jamie, Will, Anabelle, Hallie and Brooks; two sisters, Elsie Eve of North Augusta; Sadie McWhite of Union and a sister in law Frances Greer of Union. Mrs. Cudd was predeceased by her husband, J.T. and a brother, Bailey Greer.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Mark Truitt and Rev. Wayne Cooke. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Ladies Sunday School Class III and the Young at Heart.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service at Fairforest Baptist Church.

John “John Boy” Garner, Jr., age 54, husband of Sherill Peeler Garner of 164 Jonesville Lockhart Highway, Jonesville, beloved son of David and Jean Garner passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Friday, May 5, 2017 at his home.

John was born in Union, SC September 16, 1962 a son of John David Garner, Sr. and Jean Petty Garner.  He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and had worked as a Metal Fabricator at Clarkson Industrial.  John was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church but attended Oakbrook Community Church.  He was a beloved friend to all.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are two daughters, Chelsey Garner and fiancée Chris Turner and Michelle Frost and fiancée Corbin Easler all of Jonesville; two grandchildren, Madison Frost and Jonathan Frost both of the home; one brother, Mark Garner and wife Paula of Jonesville; mother-in-law, Fannie Bright of Union and father-in-law, Haskel Peeler of Jonesville.

Funeral services will be held 5:00 PM Monday, May 8, 2017 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by the Rev. Randy Burgess.  Burial will follow at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Chad Anthony Bridges, age 37, husband of Angela Bradburn Bridges of 116 Woodlawn Avenue, Union, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Carolina’s Medical Center, Charlotte, NC.

Mr. Bridges was born in Union, SC December 6, 1979, a son of Doug and Joan Bridges of NC and the late Sue Ann Monroe Bridges. He was a graduate of Union High School.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a son, Connor Bridges of the home; a sister, Stacy Mullinax of Belton; a brother, Jerry Bridges of Gastonia and an aunt, Carol Lawson and husband Robert of Union. Mr. Bridges was predeceased by his grandmother, Faye Monroe.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Monday, May 8, 2017 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Scott ad Rev. Robert Lawson. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Pamela Simmons Lawson, age 56, of 207 Osborne St., Union, widow of Terry Lawson passed away Thursday May 4, 2017.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Jonesville, SC a daughter of the late Tommy Simmons and Elaine McBride Simmons.  She retired as a secretary from A-1 Auto Sales in Jonesville.  Mrs. Lawson was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Shannon Yarbrough and husband Jason of Union and Sonya Sinclair and husband David of Buffalo; two brothers, Todd Simmons and wife Pamela of Spartanburg and “Tom-Tom” Simmons and wife Angie of Union; three grandchildren, Amanda Sinclair Quinn and husband Phillip, Novah Manibusan, and Matt Yarbrough; and one great-grandchild, Jahlil Hardy.  She was predeceased by one son, William Thomas Turner, Jr. and one daughter, Amanda Lynn Turner.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, May 8, 2017 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Melvin Shelton and Rev. Randy Smith.  Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Wilson Brackins, Bubba Yarbrough, Stevie Pettie, Brandon Hardy, Phillip Quinn, and Matt Yarbrough.
