William M. Whisnant

Mr. William McPhillips “Phil” Whisnant, age 90, of 416 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, widower of Corrie Farr Whisnant, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Heartland of Union.

Mr. Whisnant was born in Lockhart, March 2, 1925, a son of the late William and Rhoda Sealey Whisnant.  He was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and was a veteran of the US Navy having served in WWII.  Mr. Whisnant served as a former Monarch Fire Chief and was a member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge.  He was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Debbie W. Cavender; two sons, Bruce H. Whisnant and wife Iris and Danny Joe Whisnant all of Union; a special girlfriend, Carol Austin of Union; a special cousin, L.B. Sealey of West Chester; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Mr. Whisnant was predeceased by a sister, Leverne Willard.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Monday, June 1, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Smith and Chaplain Joey Bodie.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the chapel.

Danny Whitmire, Sr.
Gaffney, SC


Mr. Danny O’dell Whitmire, Sr., age 57, husband of Marie Hernandez Whitmire of 1749 Chesnee Hwy., Gaffney, passed away Friday, May 29, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Whitmire was born in Union, April 1, 1957, a son of the late General James Whitmire and Hattie Lou Patterson Whitmire. He was reared in Pacolet and was a former textile worker. Mr. Whitmire was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Brittany Whitmire of the home, Lakeshia Wicks and Jessica Hughes both of Gaffney; two sons, Danny O’dell Whitmire, Jr. of Chesnee and Todd Pennington of Gaffney; two brothers, James Lee Whitmire of Mint Hill, NC and Billy Welch Whitmire of Centerville, GA; eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mr. Whitmire was predecease by a sister, Marlene Whitmire Pennington.

A celebration of life visitation will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

The family will be at the home, 1749 Chesnee Hwy., Gaffney, SC.


Alda Ray Jolly
Union, SC


Mrs. Alda Ray Perkins Jolly, age 79, wife of Bobby Joe Jolly of 121 Grant Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Jolly was born in Mt. Holly, NC January 26, 1936, a daughter of the late Lewis Perkins and Ibera Marshall Perkins. She retired from Her Majesty and was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church. Mrs. Jolly was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Cherie Bumgardner, Sandra Owens and husband Gary all of Union and Tina Adams and husband David of Lake Wylie; two sons: Tommy Wheeler and wife Connie of Clover and Robert Wheeler of Georgia; a sister, Rose Riding of Mt. Holly, NC; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Jim Cunningham.

Visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the graveside service.

Mr. Sam Walker Dillard, Jr., age 52, of 734 Lemonade Rd., Pacolet, passed away at his home.

Mr. Dillard was born in Charleston, June 15, 1962, a son of the late Sam Walker Dillard, Sr. and Mary Rogers Dillard. He is survived by numerous cousins.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Pacolet Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jim Dillard.

The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the services.

Terry N. Crocker
Union, SC


Mr. Terry Neal Crocker, age 78, of 1214 S. Pinckney St., Union, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at his home.

Mr. Crocker was born in Union, August 6, 1936, a son of Lois O’Shields Crocker of Union and the late Clarence Crocker.  He retired as a construction supervisor working on roadways and was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit.

Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Gail Clark of Greenwood; three sons, Terry Neal Crocker, Jr. of Troy NC, Bobby Wayne Crocker of California and Johnny Lee Crocker of Winston Salem, NC; a brother, Donald Crocker and wife Augustine of Greenwood; a special caregiver, Sara Manis of Union, with whom he made his home; seven grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will 2:00 PM Friday, May 29, 2015 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David Berry and Rev. Randy Smith.  Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Monty Sanders, Mike Lawson, Dean Brown, James Hearn, Mike Blizzard, Tommy McGowan and Steve Crocker.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Lance Miller, Clifford Brown and Mr. Bob Coleman.

Visitation will be held from 12:45 until 1:45 PM Friday at the church prior to the services.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Gentiva Hospice for their care of Mr. Crocker during his illness.

William Mark Parks

Mr. William Mark Parks, age 54, of 110 Cherokee Avenue, Union, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015, after a sudden illness.

Mr. Parks was the son of Ruth Smith Parks and the late Thomas Bailey Parks. He was born September 1, 1960, in Union. Mr. Parks graduated from Union High School, attended the University of South Carolina and was a graduate of Tulane University.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his partner Clay Harrison, his sister, Caroline Parks Crocker and husband Wayne of Spartanburg, and his brother, Tom Parks of Moore; his nephews Jeff Crocker and wife Yvette and their children Rachel and Caitlyn of Spartanburg; Scott Crocker and wife Kathleen and their children Sophia, Lily, and Mason of Philadelphia, PA., Rhett Crocker and his wife Carrie and their children Ella, Henry, and Luke of Fort Mill and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Mr. Parks is also survived by his partner’s children Clay Harrison, Jr., Desirae Harrison, and Chandel Harrison.

For most of his career, he worked for Joico and Sebastion International in New Orleans, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles. After moving to Union, he was an Estee Lauder manager at Belk’s in Laurens.

The family wishes for Mr. and Mrs. Scott Fant, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Goff, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Guess, and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Dunbar, his special neighbors, to be greeters.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, May 30, at 1:00, at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Bauknight. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Calvin Keith Bailey Sr.
Union, SC


Mr. Calvin Keith Bailey, Sr., age 87, husband of Anne Blair Bailey of 204 Catawba St., Union went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday May 26, 2015.

Mr. Bailey was born in Lockhart, December 29, 1927, a son of the late Jess and Lillie Palmer Bailey. He was a 1945 graduate of Lockhart High School, a 1953 graduate of Clemson University receiving a degree in Textile Engineering.  Mr. Bailey was retired from Milliken and Co., as a Textile Engineer having worked at Lockhart Plant, Monarch Plant, Pacolet Mill Plant and also at the Milliken Research Center.

He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country during the Korean War.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mr. Bailey was an Elder, served as Superintendent of Sunday School and was also a former Deacon.  Mr. Bailey also volunteered with various activities in the community such as Meals on Wheels, Sunday Meals, Wallace Thomson Hospital, and local nursing home visitations.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Calvin Keith Bailey, Jr. and wife Mary Kaye of Walterboro; a brother, Charles Bailey and wife Gayle of Greenwood; three grandsons, Calvin Keith “Trey” Bailey, III, Stewart Palmer Bailey and James Montgomery “Jim” Bailey all of Walterboro; numerous nieces and nephews and special friends, Sharon Morris and Brock Dillard.  Mr. Bailey was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Reid Bailey.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Keith Morrison and Rev. Sanders Read. Burial with Military Honors will be held Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Wally Parker, Reid Bailey, Joel Bailey, Tim Stokes, Larry Goff, Andrew Wetmore, Trent Wetmore and Charles Clementson.

The honorary pallbearers will be members of the “Table of Wisdom” of the Bantam Chef, the Anderson Bible Class of First Presbyterian Church and Pat Littlejohn. Staff and nurses of Medi Home Hospice are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Visitation will be from 1:30 PM until 2:45 PM at the church prior to the services.

Memorial may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Betty K. Gault

Mrs. Betty K. Gault, age 83, of 1518 Whitmire Highway, Union, widow of Robert Cecil Gault, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Gault was born in Newberry, SC on August 9, 1931 a daughter of the late Pearl Eugene King and Eva Hollsonback King.  She was graduate of Newberry High School where she lettered in Basketball.  Mrs. Gault was retired from Conso Products.  She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she taught Children’s Sunday school for over 45 years and was a member of the choir.

 Surviving are a daughter, Debra Austin and husband Rev. Tom Austin of Okeechobee, FL; a son Erich Gault and wife Ann of Simpsonville, SC; two sisters, Patsy Shealy of Newberry and Brunelle Lindler and husband Hub of Las Vegas, NV; a brother, Charles King and wife Myra of Fountain, CO; three grandchildren, Sherry Singleton and husband Chip, Heidi Austin, and Rev. Andrew Austin and wife Courtney; and two great-grandchildren Kimbell and Samantha Singleton.  Mrs. Gault was predeceased by two brothers, James King and Marion King; and one grandson, Ben Morris.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Tommy McManess.  Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Barbara Ann Tucker Roberson, age 67, wife of Claude Roberson, Jr. of 850 Forest Street, Jonesville, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Roberson was born in Union, SC September 9, 1947, a daughter of the late John Pittman and Virginia Holt Tucker. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and had attended Cecil’s Business College. Mrs. Roberson was retired from Walmart and was a member of Oakbrook Community Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband of forty-eight years are a son John Michael “Mike” Roberson and wife Kristie of Jonesville; a granddaughter, Graceanna Roberson and another granddaughter on the way, Maggie Elisabeth Roberson; a special grand-dog, “Dapper”, a number of cousins including, Donald Ray Kingsmore of Union, Danny Holt and wife Karen, Jerri Ann Palmer and husband Sid all of Jonesville and Rhonda Ingle of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Melinda Anne Fleming Trantham, age 66, wife of Billy Trantham of 217 Walnut St., Union, passed away May 24, 2015 at her home

Mrs. Trantham was born in Union, July 13, 1948, a daughter of the late James and Elsie Kirby Fleming. She was a 1967 graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken Co., Cedar Hill Plant.  Mrs. Trantham started working with Kerhulas News Stand and then at Duncan Theater. Later she worked textiles at Ace Sweater, Conso Products, and United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sisters, Janet Marie Blackmon of Nashville, TN, and Rhonda Jean Calitri and husband Tony of Saluda, NC; three brothers, Gary Wayne “Skip” Fleming and wife Faye of Chesnee, John David Fleming and wife Elizabeth of Spartanburg, and Paul Eugene “Charlie” Fleming and wife Teresa also of Chesnee; a special friend and caregiver, April Erwin of Union; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Trantham was predeceased by a brother, James Robert “Bobby” Fleming.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Wayne Cooke.

Mr. Charles Edward Lee, age 76, husband of Sally Parker Lee passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Lee was born in Miami FL., on June 12, 1938, a son of the late Jesse William Lee and Dorothy Reid Lee. He was a veteran of the US Army and a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church.  Mr. Lee earned a master’s degree from Florida International University and worked as a supervisor for Bellsouth.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Sally are a daughter: Jennifer Szewczak and husband John of Columbia; three grandsons: John Matthew Szewczak of Charlotte, Zachary Robert Szewczak, Joshua Lee Szewczak both of Columbia; a granddaughter: Rachel Ann Szewczak of Columbia; one great-grandson: John Finnlee Szewczak of Columbia; two nephews: Richard Harry Cameron of GA. and Howard Raymond Cameron of FL. Mr. Lee was predeceased by three brothers: Bobby Ray Cameron, Harry Richard  Cameron and Raymond Lee Cameron.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Carrol Caldwell and Rev. Ronnie Lee Wallace. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors.

Sarah Violet Wilkins Strain
Shelby, NC


Mrs. Sarah Violet Wilkins Strain, age 91 of 132 Hillside Drive, Shelby, NC, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby.

Mrs. Strain was born in Blacksburg, SC on May 31, 1923, a daughter of the late Talmadge DeWitt Wilkins and Olney Pearl Simmons Wilkins.  She was a graduate of Blacksburg High School and attended Winthrop College.  Sarah and Samuel Butler Strain were married on June 14, 1947.  They lived in Spartanburg, SC on the Wofford College campus and in Grover, NC before eventually settling in Shelby. They were married for 56 years before "Sam's" death in January, 2004. 

Affectionately known to her many loyal buyers and sellers as "Miss Sarah," she became a licensed real estate sales agent in 1958. In 1960, Sarah Strain became the first female to actively use her Real Estate Broker's license, opening Sarah Strain Realty, Ltd.  During her 45-year career as a realtor, she held licenses in both North Carolina and South Carolina and always remained an independent agency. Mrs. Strain had served on the North Carolina Board of Realtors and was a member of the Cleveland County Chamber.  In 2007, the Chamber recognized "Miss Sarah" with its Zenith Award, which is a lifetime achievement award, presented to a citizen who has set a standard for extraordinary service and community involvement, thereby improving the quality of life for all citizens of Cleveland County.  It was an honor, which she deeply treasured and appreciated.  After that the Strain Children dedicated an indoor walking track to their parents at Cleveland Community College.

Sarah and Sam were active members of Shelby Presbyterian Church, as long as their health permitted. They were loving and devoted parents and grandparents to four children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. They were blessed to be able to follow, observe, and support their children and grandchildren in church, academic and sports endeavors. The Strain children graduated from Shelby High School, as did two of their grandsons. This relationship to the school lead to many generations of Shelby High students and athletes referring to them as "grandmama and granddaddy."
  

Surviving are two sons, Samuel Butler (Bee) Strain, Jr. and wife Martha of Shelby and Dr. Brian McCullough Strain and wife Charlotte of Roanoke, VA; a daughter, Jennifer (Sissy) Holcombe and husband William of Union; a brother, George Harry Wilkins of Blacksburg; a sister-in-law Catherine Strain Pettit of Gaffney; six grandchildren, Michael Wilkins (Wilkes) Strain, Jr. and wife Erin, Major Samuel Butler Strain, III and wife Jeni, Sarah Jessee Strain, Sarah Simmons Holcombe, Alexander McCullough (Alex) Strain, and William Eugene (Will) Holcombe, Jr.; two great grandchildren, May Elizabeth Strain and Michael Wilkins (Mack) Strain, III; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by one son, Michael Wilkins (Mike) Strain; two sisters, Geraldine Wilkins Gualteria and Ida Marie Wilkins Young; and two brothers, Talmadge DeWitt Wilkins, Jr. and Fred Simmons Wilkins.

Funeral services will be held, 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Shelby First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Luke Harkey and Rev. Pete Gilbert. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be, Butler Strain, Wilkes Strain, Alex Strain, Will Holcombe, Travis Glover, Joyner Flood, and Michael Jolly.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 3:00 prior to the services in the church fellowship hall.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Shetley Robinson, age 73 of 134 Ben Black Rd., Union, widow of Walter Jack Robinson, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015.

Mrs. Robinson was born in Union, SC February 9, 1942, a daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson “Fat” Shetley and Dorothy Johnson Smith. She retired from Milliken & Company and also the S.C. Department of Corrections. Mrs. Robinson was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where she was an active member  of  the Young at Heart.

Surviving are four sons: Kenneth Wayne Shetley and wife Sherry, Harold Eugene Shetley and wife Samantha, Robert Earl Shetley and wife Kelly and Dennis Mark Shetley and wife Cindy all of Union; a brother, James T. Shetley and wife Helen of Jonesville; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson, Kevin Knox reared in the home and six other great-grandchildren. Mrs. Robinson was predeceased by a son, Walter Ray Shetley and a sister, Carole Jean Shetley.

A Memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory.

Visitation will be held in the chapel immediately following the service. The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to Robin, Kathy, Lindsey, Stacey and Blue Ridge Hospice for their care of Mrs. Robinson.

A private burial will be held at a later date.

Vera Jean Haney Ray

Mrs. Vera Jean Haney Ray, age 78, formerly of Buffalo, widow of Billy Ray, went home to be with the Lord  Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Peach Tree Center, Gaffney, SC.

Mrs. Ray was born in Union SC March 1, 1937 a daughter of the late Rufus Haney and Guynella Miller Haney. She was a graduate of Union High School and had formerly owned and operated Andy’s of Buffalo.  Mrs. Ray was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she had served as the former church pianoist, a former choir member and had helped with various youth organizations.

Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Ray Altman of Myrtle Beach; two sons: Andy Michael Ray and wife Pam and Benjamin Scott Ray all of Union; a brother, Joe T. Haney and wife Phyllis of Buffalo; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Lynn Ford.

Visitation will be held immediately after the service at the graveside.

Margaret Ann Gault Moss, age 70, wife of Harold Ray Moss of 125 Hames Ave., Jonesville, passed away, Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Margaret Ann was born in Union, SC, September 19, 1944, daughter of Leo D. Gault and Margaret Coleman Gault. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Spartanburg Business College.  Margaret Ann was retired from Label Corporation as Personnel Manager.  She was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Angie Williams and husband Gene of Jonesville and Donna Donnelly and husband Scott of Boiling Springs; a sister Kathy Dickinson and husband Mark of Chester; a brother David Gault and wife Beth of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Regina and Daniel Williams and Bret Donnelly.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey.  Burial will follow at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM prior to the services at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Ms. Betty Ellis Hartley, age 66, of 4042 Santuc-Carlisle Hwy., Carlisle, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Ms. Hartley was born in Sullivan Co., TN, April 24, 1949, a daughter of the late Oscar Barty Ellis and Martha Ann Mabe Ellis.  She was retired from McDonalds of Union and had been employed at Carlisle Fish Camp.

Surviving are a daughter, Erin Stokes and friend Dean Gault of Carlisle; two grandsons, Zachary William Stokes and Isaiah Christopher Stokes; her longtime companion, Douglas White of Carlisle; a special granddaughter, Skylan Vaughan; seven sisters, Ann Ellis of Boston, VA, Kathy Ellis of Jonesville, SC, Mary Benson of Unionville, VA, Patsy Woodward of Elkwood, VA, Peggy Wolfrey of Richardsville, VA, Shirley Bailey of Rixieville, VA, Barbara Bailey of Mt. Peliar, OH; two brothers, George Ellis of Boston, VA and Delmar Ellis of Cleveland, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.  Ms. Hartley was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Meadows and Nancy Ellis; and two brothers, Allen Ellis and Barty Ellis.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum conducted by Rev. Kenneth Weaver.

Mrs. Louise Nesbit Patrick, age 96, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.  She was born October 23, 1918, in Albemarle, NC, a daughter of the late Dr. Taylor and Loma Niven Nisbet.  She lived in North Carolina until 1959, when she moved with her husband and children to Jonesville, SC.  A graduate of USC-Union and Limestone College, she retired from the Union County School District. In retirement she enjoyed playing bridge and taking art classes.  She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and formerly a member of Fair Forest Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Patrick, Sr.; twin sister, Lucille Guion; sister, Emily Morrison; and a brother, Taylor Nisbet, Jr.

Survivors include her children, Prudence Youngblood and husband Lee Wayne Youngblood of Jonesville, SC; and Charles William Patrick, Jr. and wife, Dr. Celeste Patrick of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Andrew Youngblood and wife Bryan of Spartanburg, SC, Chris Youngblood and wife Amanda of Greenville, SC, Laura Boyles and husband Andrew of Charleston, SC and Charles William Patrick, III of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Andrew and Resce Youngblood of Spartanburg, SC, Edie and Ava Youngblood of Greenville, SC and sisters Douglas Davis of Monroe, NC and Carolyn McLean of Greensboro, NC and well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 17, 2015, 2:00 – 3:00 PM at New Hope United Methodist Church, 154 New Hope Church Road, Jonesville, SC, followed by a 3:00 graveside service in the church cemetery with the Rev. Dr. James W. Ivey officiating.

Mr. Elbert Ezell Phillips, Sr, age 72 of 150 Mandy Lane, Cowpens, SC, passed away Wednesday May 13, 2015 at his home. 

Mr. Phillips was born in Union, SC October 29, 1942, a son of the late Douglas Ezell Phillips and Annie Belle Phillips. He was a retired textile worker.

Surviving are three sons: Elbert Ezell “Sam” Phillips, Jr, Bruce Phillips and Bill Phillips; a daughter, Betty Jo Keith all of Union; two sisters: Patricia Bridges of Gray Court and Louise Lanier of Simpsonville; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren and a special friend, Mary Harvey of Cowpens. Mr. Phillips was predeceased by a son, Albert Dean Phillips and two brothers, John Phillips and Robert Lipford.

Visitation was held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at the home of his son, Elbert “Sam” Phillips, Jr, 181 Hilltop View, Union.

Mrs. Ruby Bagwell Byrd McCall, age 89, widow of  Hershal McCall, went home to be with her Lord Wednesday, May 13, 2015.

Mrs. McCall was born September 24, 1925, a daughter of the late Homer and Mentoir Worley Bagwell. She graduated Tri-County Technical College, receiving her LP degree and retired from the Pickens Co. Health Dept. and was formerly a nurse at the Easley Hospital.  Mrs. McCall was first married to the late Claude Byrd and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Rev. Roger Byrd of Jonesville and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Bobbie Jean Byrd.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, May 15, 2015 at the Easley Church of God conducted by Rev. David Sustar and Rev. Rogers Childers. Burial will be Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

Visitation will be held 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the church prior to the services.

Mrs. Grace Elaine Hughes Kerr, age 87, widow of Charles L. Kerr, Jr., of 1510 West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Kerr was born in Graniteville, SC, February 3, 1928, a daughter of the late Everett and Grace Eargle Hughes.  She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and a member of Jonesville Baptist Church.

Mrs. Kerr retired from Her Majesty Manufacturing as a seamstress.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah K. Moore of Greer; two sons, Pat Kerr and wife Barbara and Marty Kerr and wife Deana all of Jonesville; four grandsons, Brent, Steve, and Christopher Kerr and Noel Moore; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kerr was predeceased by a son, Lane Kerr, a grandson, Mike Kerr, a granddaughter, Donna Ann Moore, a great-grandson, Andrew Kerr, a sister, Erma H. Littlefield and a brother, James Hughes.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Don Moore and Rev. Scott Cannon.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Mr. Robert Wayne “Rat” Sinclair, Sr., age 67, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.  Mr. Sinclair was a resident of Heartland of Union.

Born in Union, November 12, 1947, he was the son of the late Will L. Sinclair and Iris Lancaster Sinclair.  Mr. Sinclair was a self-employed roofer.

Surviving are a daughter Amy S. Gibson and husband Robert; four sons, Wayne Sinclair, Mitch Sinclair and wife Donna, Jeffrey Sinclair and Patrick Sinclair all of Union; eight grandchildren, Tyler Gibson, Blakelee Reid, Josh Sinclair, Kayla Sinclair, Gabriel Sinclair, Lauren Outz, Paige Deaton, and Dylan Millwood; and four  great grandchildren.  Mr. Sinclair was predeceased by a brother, Jackie Lancaster.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Scott.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Betty Ross Pope Jolly, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend joined her Lord and Savior on Saturday May 9, 2015. Betty was born on August 6, 1925 in Union, SC to Dr. Robert Ross Pope and Mary Sellers Pope. She graduated from Union High School in 1942 and from Furman University in 1945. She was married in 1948 to the late Mike Spears Jolly of Union. She was a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Betty is survived by her children:  Michael Spears Jolly, Jr., wife Helen Free Jolly, grandson Michael Spears Jolly, III, and granddaughter Haley Anna Jolly of Jonesville, SC; Robert Ross Jolly and wife Judy Martin Jolly of Columbia, SC; and Lynn Jolly Sewell of Charlotte, NC, grandson Travis Stanley Sewell and wife Trish de Golian Sewell of Atlanta, GA and granddaughters Carly Pope Sewell and Emily Ross Sewell of Charlotte, NC. Betty is predeceased by husband Mike S. Jolly, son-in-law Carl Stanley (Stan) Sewell, and a sister Helen Pope Roper.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Methodist Church cemetery on Tuesday, May 19th at 1:00 pm with Reverend David Bauknight officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the Fellowship Hall.

Mr. James Cleveland Harvey, age 75 of 405 Lemonade Rd., Pacolet, SC, widower of Mary Crocker Harvey, passed away Friday, May 8, 2015 at the home.

Mr. Harvey was born in York, SC March 28, 1940, a son of the late L.J. Harvey and Beatrice Haire Harvey. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and had attended Spartanburg Methodist College. Mr. Harvey retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections and had also been employed through Harvey & Sons Construction. He was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are a daughter, Haila H. Adams of the home; a son, Donald Christopher Harvey of Pacolet; a sister, Harriett Harvey of Myrtle Beach; two brothers: Paul Harvey and Kenny Harvey both of Pacolet; three grandchildren: Jade Adams, Charner Adams and Creed Harvey all of the home. Mr. Harvey was predeceased by a brother, Dale Harvey.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Monday evening at the Jonesville Baptist Church.

A private graveside service will be held Tuesday.

Mr. Ray Robinson, age 88, husband of Catherine Kirby Robinson of 879 East Main Street, Pacolet, passed away Friday, May 8, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Robinson was born in Union, SC March 20, 1927, a son of the late A.R. Robinson and Bessie Pennington Robinson. He retired from Kohler & Company and was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. Mr. Robinson was a Veteran of the US Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kimberly Lyda and husband Gene; a son, Danny Robinson and wife Marsha; a grandson, Jonathan Robinson all of Pacolet; a granddaughter, Melanie Cunningham and husband Chuck; a great-grandson, Hayden Cunningham all of Rutherfordton, NC. Mr. Robinson was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, May 11, 2015 at Calvary Hill Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Bill Pickel. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Jamie Nicole Palmer, age 40, of 457 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Palmer was born in Union, SC on July 26, 1974 a daughter of Robert and Sue Bentley Palmer.  She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and York Technical College.  Ms. Palmer was an X-Ray Technician at Piedmont Medical in Rock Hill.  She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Laura Farr Young Adult Plus Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a brother, Todd Palmer of Union; a special sister, Sara Ann Franklin of Union; and a special brother Marty Reardon of Union.  She was predeceased by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bentley and Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Palmer.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, May 10, 2015, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Donna Eidson and Mr. Todd Palmer.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Joe Gratton Hill, age 73, husband of Cecelia Newcomb Hill of 419 S. Pinckney St., Union, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Hill was born in Pocahontas, VA, September 9, 1941, a son of the late Joseph Elwood Hill and Constance Geraldine Edmondson “Connie” Hill.  He was retired from Westing House Electric and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Hill was a former semi pro-baseball player having pitched for the Milwaukee Braves along with several other teams throughout his career. Mr. Hill was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

Mrs. Frances S. Lawson, age 80, of 697 Vanderford Rd., wife of the late Lloyd F. Lawson for 54 years, passed away Monday, May 4, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Union on April 21, 1935, a daughter of the late Inez Grady.  She was formerly employed with Milliken and Co., Excelsior Plant and later with Duraco Products.  She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church and was first married to the late Keith Layton Sanders.  Mrs. Lawson was a Christian homemaker who devoted her life to caring for her children, brothers, sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends or strangers in need.  She loved everyone unconditionally.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Fowler and husband Kenneth George, and Donna Hooper and husband Mike all of Union; two sons, Michael Keith Sanders and wife Alice of Lockhart and Joe F. “Toe-Joe” Sanders of Union; two sisters, Brenda Beheler and Claudia Carroll and husband Coleman all of Union; three brothers, Eugene Holcombe and wife Willie Dee, Wayne Grady and wife Mary Ann, and Steve Grady all of Union; 8 grandchildren, Shannon Sanders (Angie) reared in the home, Kristie Fowler, Chad Hooper (Dawn), Tara Peace (Shawn), Misty Fink (Shawn), Michael E. Mrs. Merle Gault Harvey, age 89, of 203 Davis Street Union, passed away Monday, May 4, 2015 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mrs. Harvey was born in Union, SC on April 23, 1926 a daughter of the late George Hoyle Gault and Hattie Estelle Gault Gault.  She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired from Milliken & Co.  Mrs. Harvey was a member of Ottary Baptist Church where she was involved in various activities of the church as long as her health permitted.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Alice Harvey Graham and husband Johnnie of Leesville; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harvey was predeceased by a son, David Earl Harvey; a grandson, Larry Harvey; five sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Sandra King.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Susie Ann Gaston Gregory, age 90, widow of Neely Francis Gregory, of Mt. Tabor Church Rd., passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Chester Co., September 15, 1924, a daughter of the late George Alexander Gaston and Violet Ann Love Gaston.  She attended Sharon High School and was retired from textiles.  Mrs. Gregory was a member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a son, Steve L. Gregory and wife Jewel of Union; a sister, Virgie Tracey of Chester; two grandchildren, Nick Gregory and wife Nicole and Andrea Roberts all of Union; six great-grandchildren, Baylee Butler, Grant Butler, Drake Roberts, Makayla Gregory, Gavin Gregory, and Hailey Gregory. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by four sisters, Elise Gaston, Sadie Melton, Bertha Young and Mildred McWaters; and four brothers, Tom Gaston, Ray Gaston, Robert Gaston and John Gaston.

Mr. Kirby was born in Union, February 26, 1945, a son of the late William Woodrow Kirby, Sr. and Lynette May Kirby.  He retired from Regional Finance in Union as an assistant manager and was formerly employed with Liberty Life Insurance Co.  Mr. Kirby was a member of East Pickens Baptist Church and was first married to the late Mary Ann Hooper Kirby.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kayla K. Jenkins and husband Zachary of Pickens, two sisters, Lisa Teague and friend Terry of Lexington, NC, and Darlene Cheatam and husband Larry of Union; three brothers, Robert W. Kirby and wife Janice of Union; Jerry Kirby and wife Janice of Nebraska, and Joe Kirby and wife Pat of Sumter; two grandsons, Peyton and Easton Jenkins and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, May 4, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jamie Duncan.  Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family will be at the home of his brother, Robert and Janice Kirby, 2304 Whitmire Hwy, Union, SC.
