Harrell S. Bright Sr.

Mr. Harrell Steven Bright, Sr., age 78, husband of Peggy Millwood Bright of 124 Osborne St., Union, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Bright was born in Woodruff, August 26, 1940, a son of the late Clyde Kimsey Bright and Daisey Zimmerman Bright. He was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was a faithful attendant of Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Donna Bright Stewart and husband Chris and Lucy Bright all of Union; two sons, Harrell Bright, Jr. and Bobby Dean Bright also of Union; a sister, Judy Bright Kendrick and husband Jackie of Augusta, GA; five grandchildren, Erica K. Young of Union, Samantha S. Williams and husband Jake of AL, Ashley D. Bright of Spartanburg, Blake S. Bright and Allen K. Bright both of Union; and four great-grandchildren, Lorenzo Wilson, Alayah Wilson, Blakelee Bright and Tinsely Bright. Mr. Bright was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Wooten and two brother, Donald and Grover Bright.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Joseph Ballard.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

Deborah Adele Greene
Union, SC


On Saturday, March 30, 2019, Deborah Greene, the daughter of the late William E. “Bill” Greene and Meredith Roberson Greene, passed into eternal rest. Born in Rutherfordton, NC, Miss Greene was a long-time English Teacher at Union County High School, having taught for thirty-two and a half years. She was also an adjunct professor at USC-Union for six years and taught in the Adult Education Program for six years.

Miss Greene was active at First Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk for ten years, sang in the Youth Choir, went on mission trips, taught Sunday School and served on several church related committees. In addition, Miss Greene was civic-minded, serving as the President and a Sustainer of the Junior Charity League, as President of the Friends of the Union County Carnegie Library, as First Vice-President of the Union Lions Club, and as President of the Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International.

Surviving her are two brothers, William Eugene Greene, Jr. and wife Mary Virginia of Chapin; David Alton Greene and wife Suzette of Cross Hill; a niece, husband and children: Heather Greene Shook and Chris, Noah, Jonah, and Micah of Inman; four nephews, wives, and children: Patrick and Amanda Greene, Hailey, Summer, Cameron, Allison, Kailey, and Tinsley of Greenwood; Casey Greene of Charleston, WV; Sean and Lauren Greene, Lillie and Payton of Cross Hill; and William E. “Trey” Greene of Chapin. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 6, 2019 at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Saturday at the church prior to the service.

Frances “Hankie” Gist
Buffalo, S.C


Ms. Margaret Frances “Hankie” Gist, age 91, of Drugstore St., Buffalo, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2019, at Heartland of Union.

Ms. Gist was born in West Springs, September 3, 1927, a daughter of the late John Rogers Gist and Maggie Lancaster Gist. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was a member of West Springs Baptist Church. Ms. Gist was a member of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class and the Coleen West Circle of the church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are the following nieces and nephew, Patti McNeace and Leslie Cagle who were reared in the home; Carla Elliott of Buffalo and Floyd Heatherly of Union; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at West Spring Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Greg Black.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to West Springs Baptist Church, 4811 Buffalo- West Springs Hwy., Pauline, SC 29374.

Sidney Hope “Danny” Sanders, Jr.
Union, SC


Mr. Sidney Hope “Danny” Sanders, Jr., age 79, of 1420 Lockhart Hwy., widower of Johanna Watts Sanders, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Sanders was born April 26, 1939 in Union, a son of the late Sidney Hope Sanders, Sr. and Nina Pearl Cogdell Sanders.  He was a graduate of Union High School and retired as an Officer with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Pardon, and Parole.  Mr. Sanders was a Veteran of the United States Army.  He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School Teacher.  Mr. Sanders was a Mason with Masonic Lodge No. 75, a Shriner and was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1321.

Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Maness of Jonesville and Hope Davis and friend Keith Laster of Union; a sister, Susan Ellis and husband Tommy of Pauline; two grandchildren, Nick Maness and wife Jessica of Spartanburg and Niccole Davis of Cowpens; one great-grandson, James Tanner Maness; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Chris Gulledge. 

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Elizabeth Gail Blalock, age 66, wife of Herman Blalock of 213 Fourth St., Union, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Blalock was born December 12, 1952 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late William “Bill” Cauthen and Vader Harris Cauthen.  She was retired from Sonoco Products and was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Vanessa Gail B. Farr and husband Richard, Amanda B. Gregory, and Julie Blalock and Kennedy Garrett all of Union; two sisters, Ann Cauthen and Pam Cauthen both of Lancaster; a brother, Charles Cauthen of Lancaster; seven grandchildren, Kayla Farr, Chelsey Farr, “Bubba” Farr, Rebecca Gregory, Katey Gregory, Spencer Gregory, and Paige White; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, March 29, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tim Blalock, Kennedy Garrett, John Gossett, Spencer Gregory, Richard Farr, and Randall Wright.

Roy Bernard Rector
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Roy Bernard Rector, age 88, of 111 Fairbanks St., Jonesville, widower of Iris June Rector, passed away Monday, March 25, 2019 at his home. 

Mr. Rector was born November 11, 1930 in Jonesville, a son of the late Thomas E. Rector, Sr. and Hattie Pauline Gault Rector.  He was retired from J.P. Stevens as a Supervisor.  Mr. Rector was retired from the South Carolina National Guards having served 38 years and was a member of the NCO Club.  He was a member of Gilead Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and a Teller.  He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 29 of Jonesville and was a Shriner where he was a member of the 32 degrees.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Doster of Jonesville; a son, Michael Rector and wife Alice of Jonesville; two “sisters” that were raised in the home, Harriett Moss of Jonesville and Nita Kennedy of Winder, GA ; a brother-in-law, Donald Proctor and wife Betty of Jonesville; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Tessner and husband Ken and Diane Gault and husband Richard all of Jonesville;  two grandsons, Dylan Doster and wife Natasha and Derek Doster all of Jonesville; four granddaughters, Kristy Miranda of Jonesville, Jessica Rector of Jonesville, Michelle Rohm of Roebuck, and Jessecca Rohm of Roebuck; a number of great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a daughter, Patty Denise Rector; two sisters, Lucille R. Humphries and Frances P. Rector; and five brothers, James T. Rector, Thomas E. Rector, Jr., Charles L. Rector, Earl G. Rector, and Sam Rector.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 28, 2019 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Saxon and Rev. Ralph Brown.  Burial with full Military Honors and Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Rector, Barry Moss, Brandon Smith, Ben Rogers, Scott Kennedy, Donald Proctor, Tommy Ivey, and Eugene Rector.  Mr. Rector’s Sunday School Class at Gilead Baptist Church and members of American Legion Post 129 are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort.  At the request of Mr. Rector, friends, former members and members of Masonic Lodge #29 are welcome to the Graveside Masonic Rites.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the Church.

Mrs. Judith Diane Shetley Cooksey, age 70, of 110 Bates Ave., Union, widow of Fred Cooksey, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Valley Falls Terrace in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Cooksey was born in Union, December 30, 1948, a daughter of the late William Lydge Shetley and Viola Sanders Shetley.  She was a graduate of Union High School and was a retired textile worker.  Mrs. Shetley was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen Anderson and husband Jack of Union; two sisters, Susan Lovelace of Union and Mary Ann Duckett and husband Gene of Spartanburg; a brother, Ronnie Shetley and wife Lisa of Union; four grandchildren, Michael Berry and wife Tara, Paige Cameron and husband Chad, Mindy Berry and Casey Kitchens; and three great-grandchildren, Parker Berry, Carson Whitley ad Rex Jackson.  Mrs. Cooksey was predeceased by a daughter, Patti Berry, a great-grandson, Kayden Harvey, a sister, Grace Reece and two brothers, Jim Shetley and Cecil Shetley.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Ottaray Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Walter Holcombe and Rev. Jack Anderson.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 until 4:00 PM Saturday at the church prior to the services.

Mrs. Nora Norma Teague Ingle, age 94, of 307 Seigler Rd., Union, widow of Aubrey Leonard “Buck” Ingle, passed away Monday, March 18, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Ingle was born in Union, July 1, 1924, a daughter of the late Newland Teague and Emma Willard Teague. She was formerly employed with Milliken & Co. and Belk’s Department Store. Mrs. Ingle was a member of Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons: Michael Barry Ingle and wife Betty of San Jose, CA, Rickey Grant Ingle and wife Rhonda and Ronnie Keith Ingle and wife Phyllis all of Union; a sister, Nancy Cagle of Simpsonville; a brother, Stanley Jack Teague and wife Jackie of Simpsonville; seven grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ingle was predeceased by two sisters: Mary Francis Teague and Willie Ruth Teague; three brothers: William Curtis Teague, Robert Kenneth Teague and Davie Lee Teague and a brother-in-law, Leamon Cagle.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Joe Ballard. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

David Robin Betenbaugh

Mr. David Robin Betenbaugh, age 65, of 306 Deepwater Rd., Union, widower of Debbie Revis Betenbaugh, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Betenbaugh was born in Union, August 22, 1953, a son of the late Herman Douglas Betenbaugh and Lillie Linderman Betenbaugh. Mr. Betenbaugh was retired after 33 years of service to his country, having served in the US Army, the Air Force National Guard and the US Air Force.  Prior to his service he worked at Midway BBQ at a meat cutter. Mr. Betenbaugh was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia Betenbaugh Bobo of Union; a son, Davey Betenbaugh and wife Heather of Mt. Holly, NC; a step-daughter, Kelly Stewart Harvey of Buffalo; a sister, Patricia B. Jennings and husband Bryant of Newberry; three brothers, William Douglas Betenbaugh and wife Myrtle of Columbus, NC, Herman Donald Betenbaugh and wife Margaret and John Roper Betenbaugh all of Union; four grandchildren, Logan Betenbaugh, Tara Lee Putnam, Tesla Dakota Judy and Devin William James Vanderford; two step-grandchildren,  Brystle Harvey and Levi Harvey; and one great-grandson, Liam Guyton. Mr. Betenbaugh was predeceased by a sister, Martha Susan Betenbaugh and two brothers, James Sanders Betenbaugh and Thomas Michael Betenbaugh.

A memorial service with Military Honors will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Tommy Mann.

Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Burgess, Jerry Burgess, David Joe Keith, Steve Williams, Billy Burgess, William Moseley, Aaron Petty, Dustin Silvey, Rick Malpass, Michael Brewington and Jonathan McAbee.

Mrs. Ruth Matthews Lee, age 92, of 238 Sardis School House Rd., Union, widow of J.K. Lee, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Lee was born April 16, 1926 in Greenville, a daughter of the late Ernest Elmer Matthews and Mae Fields Matthews.  She was retired from Milliken & Co.—Monarch Mill.  Mrs. Lee was an active member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church.  She loved her garden and her family. Mrs. Lee was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are four daughters, Mae Williams, Shirley Lancaster, Nancy Lawson, and Linda Jones; three sons, James “Bug” Lee and wife Tammy, Ernest Lee and wife Debra, and Joe Lee and wife Erna; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Vivian Reeves, Debbie Gagnon, and Gene Morris that were reared in the home.  She was predeceased by a daughter, Alice Johnson and a son, Harold Lee.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham.  Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be the following grandsons, Nick Williams, John Calhoun, Kyle Hicks, Nathaniel Hall, Jameson Johnson, Dillan Williams, Hunter Enlow and Nicholas Williams.

Virginia Marcelle Galloway Douglas

Mrs. Virginia Marcelle Galloway Douglas, age 87, of 296 Meansville Rd., went to be with the Lord Friday, March 15, 2019 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Douglas was born December 2, 1931 in Easley, a daughter of the late Retired Major E. Lloyd Galloway and Ruth Ledford Tollison.  She was retired as Property Manager from Meadow Wood Property Management in Tampa, FL.  Mrs. Douglas was a member of the National Apartment Association for over 30 years.  She was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Terena “Tina” Ruth Beauregard and Melinda “Lindy” Daum and friend Ricky Duckett both of Union; two sons, Michael A. Albee and wife Teresa of Jonesville and John W. Albee and wife Marilyn of Orlando, FL; one sister, Mary Lee Caldwell of Lexington; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her step father, Roy Tollison and a brother, Charles D. Tollison.

A celebration of life services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 18, 2019 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Wayne Cooke, Rev. Scott Cobb, and Rev. Shannon Faulkner.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Bill Randall, Chris Sumner, Ricky Duckett, Kenny Proctor, Scott Wells and Jake Sumner.  The Mike Lovelace Sunday School Class, Pearl Crocker, Marlo Gist, Charlie Painter, Frank Sprouse, and John Tucker are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jeri Lynn Raymond Stein

Ms. Jeri Lynn Raymond Stein, age 59, of 1227 Arthur Blvd., Union, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Stein was born February 22, 1960 in East Chicago, IN, a daughter of Mary Ingold Geurin Leininger and husband William Ray Leininger of Bolivar, MO and the late Jack Geurin.  She was a graduate of Southwest Baptist University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education and a graduate of Converse College where she received her Master of Education.  Mrs. Stein was retired from Union County Schools having worked as Physical Education teacher at Jonesville Elementary-Middle School and had taught at Buffalo Elementary School and Excelsior Middle School.  She was a selected as the 2012 Union County School District Teacher of the Year.  She previously a Social Worker in Greene County, Missouri and as a teacher in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri Schools.  Mrs. Stein was a member of First Baptist Church and attended Cane Creek Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother and step-father are two children, Austin Glenn Stein and Haley Rae Stein of the home; the father of her children, Mark Stein; five sisters, Lynda Horton of Russellville, KY, Sandy Cockerham of Union, Patty Majocci of Springfield, MO, Rhonda Gilmore of Cornerville, MS and Jackie Bishop and husband Jeremiah of Bolivar, MO; one brother,  David Geurin and wife Lori of Bolivar, MO.  She was predeceased by one brother, Mitchell Fuller.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Brian Childers.  Burial will follow at Lockhart Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bobbie Fowler Roberts, age 84, of Mill St., Lockhart, widow of Johnny Roberts, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Roberts was predeceased by a son, Phil Roberts. 

In keeping with Mrs. Roberts wishes, a private burial will be held at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.


Audrey Parkins Tidwell

Mrs. Audrey Elizabeth Parkins Tidwell, age 54, wife of James Lewis Tidwell of 6020 Edmond Hwy., Lot 8, Lexington, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Prisma Health-Richland.

Mrs. Tidwell was born in Union, December 25, 1964, a daughter of the late Franklin D. and Grace Humphries Parkins.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a brother, Dale Parkins of Jonesville; a niece, Brianna Jade Parkins and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Union. The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

Mattie Dianne Reynolds “Fly Mama”, 71, of Union, SC, went home to be with the Lord Friday, March 8, 2019, surrounded by those she loved. Born January 2, 1948, in Abbeville, SC, she was the daughter of the late James Nelson “Jack” and Mattie Lou (Tollison) McClain.
For Dianne, family and friends were everything.  Having both a heart of gold and a beautiful soul, she nourished those around her with unconditional love, support, and selflessness, leaving a tremendous impact on the lives of those who were lucky enough to know and be loved by her. Comfort can be taken in knowing that not only is she in God’s presence, but she has also been reunited with her mother and father whom she loved dearly.

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle, you.”

She will forever be cherished and remembered by her husband of 25 years, Lonnie Reynolds; brother Jimmy (Jerry) McClain of Ware Shoals, SC; children Susan Guilmett (David) Smith and Brian Guilmett, both of Union, SC; Sister-in-Laws Lora Reynolds of Pacolet, SC and Lynn Thornton of Inman, SC; grandchildren Cody Williams, Hannah Williams, and Halie (Alex) Avendano of Spartanburg, SC; great grandchildren Allie Ledford of Battle Creek, MI, Kaylee Chin-Loy, Gabriel Avendano, and Aria Mallet of Spartanburg, SC; very special nieces and nephew Kyleigh Lamb, Khloe Lamb, and Kylen Morgan of Pacolet, SC; special friends Chris Hall of Spartanburg, SC and Alice Sorrells of Union, SC; along with many nieces, nephews and close friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Thompson Chapel Baptist Church, 990 Thompson Chapel Rd Spartanburg, SC 29307. There will be a celebration of life following the memorial service, at the family home 1130 Cleveland St Pacolet, SC 29372.

Margaret Ann Chapman

Margaret Ann Chapman of Newberry went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, March 8, 2019.

Born in Whitmire on December 9, 1959, she was a daughter of Ruth Tankersley McKee and the late Lionel McKee. Ann graduated the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy in December 1982 and worked for a while as a registered pharmacist in S.C. She was a member of Glory Tabernacle and was affectionately known by many as “Grammie” or “YaYa”.

She was a true believer and has been preparing for eternity for a very long time. She studied the word of God every day until her Bible literally fell apart from so much use and so many notations. She knew the promise of our Father and she was truly a daughter of the King. She was the kind of person that would help anyone, anytime, with an encouraging word and a quote of scripture that would help them through their situation. God was always on her mind and Jesus was her motivation.

Ann is survived in addition to her mother, Ruth McKee by her husband of 33 years, Carey “Casey” Chapman; daughters, Dana White (Billy) and Christen Chapman (Justin Chrisley); granddaughter, Graceann White; grandsons, Treyten White and Jaxson Chrisley; a sister, Frankie Church (Gene) and Grammie's special grandkids, Tiffany and Matthew Baez.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Joel Mundy and Rev. Xavier Baez. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Eugenia Anne Adams Brown, 87, of Union, widow of Robert W.  "Bobby" Brown, Sr.,  passed away Friday, March 8, 2019 at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center in Laurens.

Mrs. Brown was born on March 3, 1932, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Adams, Sr., and Hetty Vanderford Adams. She grew up in the Adamsburg Community where she was affectionately known as "Sister" to family and friends. Mrs. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church of Union.  She graduated from Union High School and Converse College with a degree in Sociology. Prior to her marriage she taught braille at South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. Mrs. Brown was owner of Adams Real Estate.

Survivors include her four children:  Amy Satterfield and her husband, Mark, and Benjy Brown and his wife, Jennifer,  all of  Spartanburg; Robert Brown and his wife, Anna, and Richard Brown and his wife, Jennifer,  all of Union; seven grandchildren: Katie Resumovic and her husband, Amer, of Spartanburg;  Laura Satterfield and her fiance, Eric Broughton of Denver, Co.; Rachel Satterfield of Augusta, Ga.; Bobby, Angela and Andrew Brown of Union and Benjamin Brown of Spartanburg; and two great-grandchildren, Alec and Aren Resumovic of Spartanburg.  Mrs. Brown was predeceased by two brothers, Harold Bruce Adams and Ben Adams, Jr.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m. in Goucher Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherokee County conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. The family will receive friends after the service.

Mr. Danny Clint Vinson, age 46 of 117 Red Road, Union, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Vinson was born in Union, SC May 18, 1972, a son of the late John Thomas “JT” Vinson and Kathy Walker Vinson. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Chad Vinson and wife Stacie; two nieces: Kaycie Vinson and Emma Vinson of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 Monday, March 12, 2019 at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Sam Baine. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Adams, Lee Brannon, Chris Brannon, Joey Allen, Scotty Gregory and Jody Walker.

Mr. Donald Murray O’Dell, age 60, husband of Peggy Gault O’Dell of 3048 Gilchrist Rd., Sharon, passed away at his home, Thursday, March 7, 2019.

Mr. O’Dell was born in Chester, March 3, 1959, a son of Betty Gilchrist O’Dell of Chester and the late Walter Murray O’Dell. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and Spartanburg Technical College. He was retired owner of O’Dell Welding, LLC and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. Mr. O’Dell was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple and the Lockhart Masonic Lodge # 244.  He was also a former member of the Cross Roads Fire Dept. and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Kevin Brown and wife Tonya of Jonesville and a very special granddaughter, Karly Brown also of Jonesville. He was predeceased by a sister, Diane O’Dell.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Haskell O’Neil “Neil” Howell

Mr. Haskell O’Neil “Neil” Howell, age 72, husband of Janice “Jan” Howell, of 226 Woodhaven Dr., Union, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Howell was born November 13, 1946 in Union, a son of the late Albert Maurice Howell and Lena Margaret Vaughan Howell.  He was a graduate of Lockhart High School, he attended Clemson University, and was a graduate of USC-Union.  Mr. Howell retired as a Lab Specialist from the City of Union Waste Water Treatment Department and was a part-time employee of Holcombe Funeral Home.  He retired after 39 years from the South Carolina National Guard.  Mr. Howell was an active member of Philippi Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon, a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class, a former Sunday School Teacher, and former Training Union Director.

Mr. Howell was a Master Mason with Union Masonic Lodge #75, where he was the current Senior Warden, and was member of the former John A. Fant Masonic Lodge from 1975 until 2003.  He was a member of the Union York Rite Bodies, Hejaz Shriners, Piedmont Council #440 AMD, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America. Mr. Howell was a historian and genealogist, he was currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Union County Historical Society and had recently written the history of Union Masonic Lodge #75 for the 200th anniversary.  He was a member and Past-President of the Union Rotary Club, a member of the South Carolina Rural Water Association, and was a lifetime member of the Waste Water Environmental Association of South Carolina.  Mr. Howell was a former member of the Board of Directors and past Chairman of the Brown’s Creek Water District and a former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Union Academy.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 45 years are, a daughter, Jane Howell Taylor and husband Jamison of Union; a sister, Marsha Howell Fuller and husband Sonny of Clinton; a brother, Charles “Charlie” Howell and wife Tanya of Shelby; three grandchildren, Katie Marie Taylor, Ari Elizabeth Taylor, and Davis O’Neil Taylor; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and a host of friends.  He was predeceased by an infant son, Ari O’Neil Howell; a sister, Charlene Howell Nance, and his in-laws, Guy and Guynelle Howell.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, March 8, 2019 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale, Rev. Robert Scott, and Rev. Brian Redding.  Burial with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Alfred Belk, Andy Fowler, Adam Howell, DeWayne Nance, Brandon Fuller, Caleb Howell, and John Williams.  The following are asked to serve as the honorary escort, the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class, Deacons, and former Deacons of Philippi Baptist Church, the Union Rotary Club, the Board of Directors of the Union County Historical Society, current and former employees of the City of Union Waste Water Department, and members of the Union Masonic Lodge #75.

Mr. Charlie Ruben Gregory, age 73, formerly of 2nd Ave. Union, widower of Virginia Cargill Gregory, passed away Monday, March 4, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Gregory was born in Jonesville, October 24, 1945, a son of the late Johnny Sharp Gregory and Mary Azalee Proctor Gregory. He retired from Haemonetics Corp. in Union and was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Gregory was also a member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75. He was a longtime volunteer at the Union Medical Center and loved his family, children and the Lord. Mr. Gregory was first married to the late Margie Owens Gregory.

Surviving are a brother B.F. Gregory and wife Cheryl of Jonesville; a sister, Mary G. Toney of Union and a number of nieces and nephews.  Mr. Gregory was predeceased by two sisters, Louise G. Jenkins and Martha Ann Gregory and three brothers, William, Andrew, and Wallace “Gene” Gregory.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 12:00 until 1:00 PM at the church prior to the services.

Mr. Larry Douglas Morris, age 75 of 419 Pineneedle Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019.

Mr. Morris was born in Union, SC December 30, 1943, a son of the late Boyd Morris and Inez Knox Morris Howell. He was a graduate of Union High School and was an insurance agent with Atlantic Coast and Pilot Life. Mr. Morris was a member of the Union Elks Lodge.

Surviving are a son, L. Zane Morris and wife Gwen of Lexington; a sister, Patricia Cato of Spartanburg; three grandchildren: Matraca Morris, Savannah Morris and Chloe Morris; a great-grandson, Jackson Lowell; a special niece, Beverly Morris of Union and several other nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Rick  Cook.

Visitation will be 2:00-3:00 PM Wednesday in the chapel prior to the service.

Mr. Gilbert Smith, age 92, husband of Lucile Fowler Smith of 201 Forest St., Jonesville, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Smith was born in Jonesville, November 23, 1926, a son of the late William Edward Smith and Dela Smith.  He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from Spartan Mills.  Mr. Smith was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WWII aboard the USS Juneau. He was a member of the American Legion, Prudence Masonic Lodge, and the Cruiser Division Clubs of WWII. Mr. Smith was also a Shriner and a member of Jonesville Baptist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Smitty Smith and wife Beverly of Jonesville; a grandson, Taylor Smith and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, March 4, 2019 at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Scott Cannon, Rev. Ralph Brown and Rev. Alan West.  Burial with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will follow at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Gary Proctor, Randy Gregory, Preston Thomas, Russell Vinson, Mike Roberts and Stephen Roberts.

Mrs. Bennie Gregory Crisp, age 79, of 2717 Lockhart Hwy., Union, widow of Glenn Crisp, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at Inman Healthcare.

Mrs. Crisp was born May 8, 1939 in Union, a daughter of the late Ben Gregory and Lavern Moore Gregory.  She was retired as a South Carolina State Constable having worked most of her career as a crossing guard at Monarch Elementary School.  Mrs. Crisp was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Crisp Boyle of Union; a son, Thomas G. Crisp of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Grace Nave and Rachel Howell both of Union; five grandchildren, Tracy Bond, Melissa Sanders, Matthew Crisp, Montgomery Crisp, and Lindsay Crisp; and five great-grandchildren, Megan Garcia, Caleb Branch, Jayden Branch, Reanna Branch, and Caitlyn Riddle.  She was predeceased by a son, Mickey Crisp.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, March 4, 2019 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Walter Holcombe.  Visitation will be immediately following the services at the cemetery.

James “Buddy” Snyder

Mr. James “Buddy” Snyder, age 80, husband of Cora Cathcart Snyder, of 223 Tempy Hill Rd., Buffalo, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Snyder was born May 26, 1938 in Union, a son of the late Ernest B. Snyder and Vera Sanford Snyder Medford.  He was retired from Timken and was a Veteran of the South Carolina National Guard.  Mr. Snyder was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult Choir, a former Deacon and enjoyed working and cooking for the Wild Game Supper and the fellowship. 

Surviving are two daughters, Teresa S. Candler and husband Joey of Buffalo and Melissa S. Inman and husband Bruce of Union; three grandchildren, Margaret Elizabeth “Maggie” Kurimcak of Buffalo, Lauren Turner and husband Tony of Union, and Lindsay Inman and friend Chance Allen of Union; four great-grandchildren, Aubriella Ann Fisher, Ryan Vassey, Aiden Turner, and Amelia Allen; and a special aunt, Darlene Roberts of Buffalo.  He was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Watkins.

The family wishes to express a special “Thank You”  the staff and nurses of Crescent Hospice for their care and love of Mr. Snyder during his illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Melvin Shelton.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
