Danny P. Lawson
Formerly of Union

Mr. Danny P. Lawson, age 76, of Magnolia Manor, Spartanburg, SC, formerly of Union died Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Smith-Phayer Hospice House, Landrum, SC.

Mr. Lawson was born in Buffalo, SC March 3, 1934, a son of the late Robert Floyd Lawson and Lola Brooks Lawson. He was a 1953 graduate of Union High School, Brevard School of Music and Cecil’s Business College. Mr. Lawson retired from Hearst-Celanese; was a Veteran of the US Army and a member of the US Army Band. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Kitty Freeman and husband Shane of Salt Lake City, UT; two sons: Michael Lawson of Nashville, TN and Kevin Lawson and wife Marnie of Aiken, SC; two sisters: Polly L. Smith and husband Wayne and Bebe L. Malpass and husband Charles all of Union; two brothers: Harold Lawson of Union and Charles Lawson and wife Sylvia of Spartanburg; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a niece; a number of nephews and a special friend Doris Murphy.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 3:00 PM Monday, March 29, 2010 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Smith, Ray Malpass, Ricky Malpass, Mitch Lawson, David Lawson and Tim Lawson.

Visitation will be held 1:30-2:30 PM Monday at SR Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.

Monday after the service, the family will be at the home of his niece, Rhonda Hollingsworth, 514 Fairview Church Circle, Union.

Austin Ricky Todd

Mr. Austin Ricky Todd, age 55, husband of Patty Locklear Todd of 408 Meansville Road, Lot 18 Creekside Mobile Home Park, Union, SC died Friday, March 26, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Todd was born in Union, SC December 8, 1955, a son of Ruby Bowman of Columbia, SC and the late Roy Austin Todd and Josephine Austin Todd. He was formerly employed with Cone Mill- Carlisle Finishing and attended Full Gospel Tabernacle of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters: Melissa Curtis and husband Jeremy, Brenda McKeown and husband John, Debra Poole and friend John Wayne Henderson all of Union and Stacey Fleming and husband Mike of Jonesville; three sons: Michael Poole and friend Shelley Karcanes of Union, Billy Storey and wife Sarah of Newberry and William Austin "Sam-bo" Todd and fiancee’ Kayla Waters of Batesburg; a sister; a brother; sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, March 29, 2010 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook and Rev. Scott Cobb.

Mr. Todd will be taken to the home where the family will receive friends Sunday.

Anita Gail Knight

Ms. Anita Gail Cathcart Knight, age 46, of 903 Sardis Rd., Union, passed away, Thursday March 25, 2010, at Regional Hospice Home after a extended battle with cancer.

Ms. Knight was born in Fayetteville, NC, the daughter of the late Gwen Moss Burnette. She was reared in the home of her late maternal grandparents Bill and Audrey Moss of Union.

A 1981 graduate of Union High School, Ms. Knight also received an Associates Degree in Computer Science from Spartanburg Technical College. She was a cast member with Disney Direct Marketing in Jonesville and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son: Dustin Brewer of Union; two sisters: Julie Allen and husband Dean, and Audrey Frost and husband Paul all of Union; four nieces: Amber F. Robertson and husband Cotton, Brandy Frost, Cindy Frost and Jennie Allen all of Union; one nephew: Brandon Frost of Union; special aunts and uncles: Sandra and Steve Moss and Wayne and Sharon Morris all of Union; and a special pet companion, Maggie.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Emory, Rev. Eric Sullivan and Mr. David Berry. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Gerald Baker, Cotton Robertson, Robbie Jett, Ron Lybrand, David Szymanski, and Bo Tessner. Cast members of Disney Direct Marketing are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Mrs. Bettie Austin Brown, age 74 of 323 North 1st Street, Lockhart, SC died Thursday, March 25, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Brown was born in Union, SC October 8, 1935, a daughter of the late James Melvin Austin, Sr and Sarah McManus Austin, She retired from United Merchants - Buffalo Plant and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Barbara Jackson and husband Bobby of Lockhart and Carolyn Robertson of Union; a sister, Hazel Cudd of Jonesville; six grandchildren: Sara Justice and Wayne Martin both of the home, Stephanie Strong, Jobie Justice, Jr, Sue Ellen Belue and Wendy Jackson and ten great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by two brothers: David Austin and Melvin Austin.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 28, 2010 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Cora Inman Riddle, age 82, widow of Robert Riddle, passed away March 19, 2010 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Riddle was born in Union, September 13, 1927 a daughter of the late Smith and Clara Holcombe Inman. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from United Merchants, Union Plant. Mrs. Riddle was an active member of Morningside Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Riddle was first married to the late Dewey L. Black.

Surviving are two daughters: Judy Eubanks and special friend John Lancaster of Union and Ann Black Allen of Columbia; six sisters: Maggie Teague, Alma Valentine and Josie O’Shields all of Union, Hattie Gregory of North Augusta, Jean Moore of Tampa FL and Peggy Lee of Lexington; four grandchildren: Angie E. Bright and husband Kenneth, Kristy Webster and husband Will, Christopher Allen and Michael Allen and wife Elizabeth; three great-grandchildren: Ashley Anthony and husband Brett, Jordan Bright and Rowan Webster. Mrs. Riddle was predeceased by a sister: Mattie Vinson and five brothers: Daniel, Charlie, Joe, Laurie, and Bobby Inman.

Mrs. Elaine Burnside Kimbrell, age 62, wife of James E. "Butch" Kimbrell, of 334 Deepwater Rd. Union went home to be with her Lord, Friday, March 19, 2010 after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Kimbrell was born in York Co., S.C., September 28, 1947, a daughter of the late Willis and Estelle Johnson Burnside. She was attended Rock Hill High School and graduated from Union High School. Mrs. Kimbrell was formerly employed as a supervisor with Her Majesty Corp. and was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter: Cindy Bryan and husband Phil of Boiling Springs; two sons: Jimmy Kimbrell and wife Sheila of Union and Chris Kimbrell and wife Nikki of Greenville; a brother: Rev. Dr. Jerrold Burnside of Fayetville, N.C.; 7 grandchildren: Phillip Michael Bryan, Alyssa Bryan, Andrew Bryan, Cade and Cam Kimbrell, Amber O’Shields, and Tiffani Gallman; 2 great-grandchildren: Kalli and Jordyn O’Shields; and several nieces and nephews and her special pet miniature daschund, Kiba. Mrs. Kimbrell was predeceased by a sister: Brenda Ashley.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Cribb and Rev. Dr. Jerrold Burnside. Entombment will be held at the Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Rev. Forrest Davis

Rev. Forrest Davis, age 85, husband of Pauline Greer Davis of 110 Carter Street, Union, SC, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Rev. Davis was born in Lincoln County, NC April 24, 1924, a son of the late McKinley Davis and Florence Leatherman Davis. He received his education from Gardner Webb College, Fruitland Bible Institute and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Rev. Davis was a retired Southern Baptist Minister having served as pastor for Berea Baptist Church, Connelly Springs, NC, El Bethel Baptist Church, Morganton, NC, Corinth #1 Baptist Church, Easley, SC, Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, Union, SC, Cross Memorial Baptist Church, Morganton, NC, Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, Forest City, NC and Browns Creek Baptist Church in Union, SC where he served his last full time pastorate. Rev. Davis continued to serve the Lord as a supply and interim pastor for the following churches in Union: Ottaray Baptist Church, Victory Baptist Church and Brown’s Creek Baptist Church. He also served as District Chaplain of the Union Soil and Water Conservation District. Rev. Davis was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where he was a member of Tom Alexander Sunday School Class. He was first married to the late Juanita Cook Davis.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda D. Whitmire and husband Jesse of Union; a son, C.F. Davis and wife Colleen of Fayetteville, NC; ten grandchildren: Kimberly Parkins and husband Scott of Union, Joy Davis of Wilmington, NC, Karisa Merrell and husband Jared of Fayetteville, NC and Jonathan Davis of Greenville, NC; two great-grandchildren: Jonathan Parkins and Felicia Parkins both of Union; two sisters: Camilla Engle, Helen Jenks and two brothers: Buford Davis and Wayne Davis all of N.C.; three stepsons: Lee Greer and wife Joan and Jake Greer and wife Rosalyn all of Spartanburg and Billy Greer and wife Marty of Atlanta, Ga. Rev. Davis was predeceased by a brother, Charles Davis.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Browns Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green, Rev. Robert Branch and Rev. John Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Harry A. Proctor
Jonesville, S.C.

Mr. Harry A. Proctor, age 84, widower of Margie Mize Proctor, of 1141 S. Jonesville Hwy., Jonesville, died Monday, March 15, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after brief illness.

Mr. Proctor was born in Jonesville, October 18, 1925, a son of the later Leander and Essie Worthy Proctor. He was retired from the S.C. State Highway Dept and was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mr. Proctor was a veteran of the US Army having served during WWII and was an avid farmer. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are one son: Wayne Proctor; one grandson: Drew Proctor both of Jonesville and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Mt. Joy Baptist Church cemetery conducted by Rev. Alan West.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the graveside services.

Juliaette B. Kerhulas
Leawood, KS

Mrs. Juliaette Burts Kerhulas, a longtime Union resident, died on March 13th, 2010 at Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Leawood, Kansas. Mrs. Kerhulas was well known to Union residents as co-owner and operator of Kerhulas Newsstand on East Main Street with her late husband Sam Kerhulas. She continued to run the Newsstand after his death in 1990 until closing it in 1997.

Born in Laurens, South Carolina on October 10, 1922, she was the daughter of Edgar and Mattie Culbertson Burts. She was a graduate of Laurens High School and Lander College. Juliaette and Sam were married in Spartanburg on March 24, 1945 and moved to Union, where they raised their children and were active members of the community.

Mrs. Kerhulas was a member of First Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Busy Bee Garden Club, Bethany Sunday School, Pearl Johnson WMU and she was a past board member of Union Academy. Yaya, as she was affectionately known, was a wonderful wife, grandmother, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will always be remembered for her gracious heart, hard-working nature, warm hospitality and love of Union.

She is survived by her four children Judith Ann (Bruce) Lamond of Virginia Beach, VA, Tom (Julie) Kerhulas of Santa Maria, CA, Sam (Fran) Kerhulas Jr. of Union, and Angie (Cy) Stanland of Kansas City, MO. Also surviving are her four grandchildren Barton Lamond, Juliaette (Jerry) Chamberlain, Allison (Greg) Grupe, and Andrea (Paul) Reynolds, her great-granddaughter Kate Grupe, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Sam Kerhulas and all of her siblings.

In 2007 she moved to Leawood, Kansas to assisted living and to be near her daughter, Angie and Granddaughter, Juliaette. She was loved and adopted as "Yaya" by many close friends. She enjoyed and appreciated the loving care of all the staff at Sunrise. Her family would like to thank them, especially the team of the third floor. Special thanks to Cozetta Maria, Cozetta, Frances, Jenny and Tamika who were her friends and angels.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 19, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens. CPallbearers will be Curtis Dunbar, Ed Proctor, Barton Lamond, Jerry Chamberlain, Greg Grupe, and Paul Reynolds.

The family will receive friends at Holcombe Funeral Home on Thursday, March 18, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00PM.

C. Darrell Wade

Mr. Charles Darrell "CD" Wade age 83, husband of Margaret Sprouse Wade, passed away Monday, March 15, 2010 at his home after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Wade was born in Union, May 25, 1926, a son of the late Frank Terrel Wade and Janie Shirley Wade.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 63 years, are two sons: Ronnie Wade and wife Genia and Roger Wade and wife Sara all of Union; a daughter : Patti Lawson and husband Jerry of Buffalo; 15 grandchildren: Khristy Wade, Chip Wade, Eric Wade, Tony and Amanda Horne, Cyle and Alison Coker, Sammy and Jill White, Brandy Lawson, Brad and Tracy Lawson, and Dennis and Jami Trammell; 14 great-grandchildren: Christina Davis, Taylor and Jessica Wade, Larissa and Abigail Horne, Cade and Hanna Cali Coker, Christopher and Brandon White, Cheyenne and Brianne Lawson, Alley and Harlee Lawson, and Conley Trammell; one sister: Verle Hodge and three brothers: Tom Wade, William Wade and Jackie Wade. Mr. Wade was predeceased by five brothers: Frank Wade, Jr., Cecil Wade, Boyce Wade, Donald Wade, and Olin Wade; four sisters: Ruth Leonhart, Grace Baldwin, Jute O’Shields and Louise Wade; and a great-grandson: Brett Wade.

Mr. Wade was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WWII. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, the Union Masonic Lodge, Union Elks Lodge and was a Shriner. Mr. Wade served on the Union County Fair Board from 1954 until 1991 and was the Executive Director from 1991 until 2003. Mr. Wade served as Executive Director of Greenwood County Fair from 2003 until 2008. He served on the Union County School Board from 1962 until 1964 and the Union City Council from 1964 until 1988. He was retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 33 years and was co-owner of the Union Phone Mart and Wade’s Employment Agency. He loved his Lord, his family and working.

Funeral services will be held 3:00PM Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Ken Baldwin, Terry Wade, Joe Wade, Mark Wade, Lynn Wade, David Wade, Robert Sprouse and Frank Bishop.

Mrs. Shirley Wright Robinson, age 71, wife of Paul Robinson, 219 Gin Circle, Buffalo, passed away Friday morning, March 12, 2010 at her home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Robinson was born in Buffalo, SC January 18, 1938, a daughter of the late Edgar T. "Bud" Wright and Lois Haney Wright. She was a 1956 graduate of Union High School and retired from Spartan Mills Rosemont Plant in Jonesville. Mrs. Robinson was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of fifty-three years are a daughter, Donna R. Atkinson and husband Jeff; a son, Dale Robinson and wife Crystal all of Union; two sisters: Claudette Brewington and husband Danny McClocklin and Joyce Newton and husband Joe all of Buffalo; two brothers: Bruce Wright and wife Teresa of Jonesville and Brent Wright and wife Jean of Union; a sister-in-law, Hazel Wright of Buffalo; five grandchildren: Bryan Robinson and wife Audrey, Brett Robinson and wife Tiffany, Kelli Atkinson, Katy Beth Robinson and Trent Atkinson; two step-granddaughters: Leslie Thompson and husband Matt and Lindsey Switzer and husband Ryan; four great-grandchildren: Maddox Robinson, Thomas Robinson, Carter Mullis and Landon Sumner; and one stepgreat-grandson: Hayden Thompson. Mr. Ulus Carson Sturgill, age 83, husband of Wanda Marie Meade Sturgill of 2149 Jonesville Lockhart Hwy, Union, SC died Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Sturgill was born in Pound, VA December 30, 1926, a son of the late Gordon Sturgill and Melissa Blanton Sturgill. He was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II; was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church and was also a member of the Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge. Mr. Sturgill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-three years are two daughters: Glenda Lawson and husband Gerald and Karla Rector and husband Eddie both of Union; a son, Terry C. Sturgill and wife Belinda of Pacolet; three grandchildren: Scott Lawson and wife Kim of Union, Erich Sturgill and wife Julie of Cowpens and Jason Rector of Los Angeles, CA; four great-grandchildren: Jakob Lawson, Jordan Lawson, Bennett Sturgill and Andrew Sturgill.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, March 12, 2010 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ralph M. Austin, Jr., age 63, husband of Teresa Freeman Austin of 250 Old English Rd.

Union, SC went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 7, 2010 at his home.

Mr. Austin was born in Union, SC July 4, 1946, a son of the late Ralph Austin, Sr. and Mildred Petty Austin. Mr. Austin was previously employed with Petroleum World and was a Charter member of Morningside Baptist Church. He was a member of the Duncan Masonic Lodge # 256.

Mrs. Mable Bentley Reynolds, age 88 went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Reynolds was the widow of Robert Reynolds.

Mrs. Reynolds was born in Union County, SC January 24, 1922, a daughter of the late Lon W. Bentley and Jessie Lee Sweat Bentley. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are five daughters: Deloris Annette Southerland, Margaret Southerland both of Lockhart, Debbie Leonard of Pacolet. Clara Robinette of Union and Emily Eaddy of Pacolet; a son, Jimmy Reynolds of Union; a sister, Geneva Kitchens of Adamsburg; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Tuesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Kenneth B. Benton, age 74, wife of Kathleen Painter Benton of 121 College St. Union, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Benton was born in Gaffney, SC May 27, 1935, a son of the late William Benton and Mallie Burgess Benton. Mr. Benton was a retired construction worker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Tammy Petrea and husband Kent of Charlotte, NC; three sons, Dennis Blalock of Tenn., Jerry "Butch" Benton and Wayne Benton both of Union; a sister; Lorrine Allison and a brother; Walter Benton both of Gaffney; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Benton was pre-deceased by a son, Kenny Benton and two brothers; Brady Benton and Donald Benton.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Billy Blackwell.

Mrs. Susie Welchel, age 73, wife of Troy Welchel of 120 Magnolia Rd. Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, March 4, 2010.

Mrs. Welchel was born in Cherokee County, SC April 7, 1936, a daughter of the late Douglas and Ollie Parker Owensby. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and was a retired textile worker.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a step-son: Michael Welchel and wife Sandra of Spartanburg; two sisters: Peggy Deaton and husband J.C. of Jonesville and Frankie Jackson of Gaffney; a step-granddaughter, Charlene Bright of Spartanburg; a step-great-grandson, Glenn Bright of Spartanburg and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Welchel was predeceased by seven brothers.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jerry Ford and Rev. Dwight Easler.

Mrs. Dorothy Knighten Mosier Caldwell, age 80, wife of Jack W. Caldwell of 2885 Jerusalem Rd. Pacolet, SC died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Mary Black Hospital.

Mrs. Caldwell was born in York, SC August 12, 1929, a daughter of the late Frank and Ruby Wright Knighten. She was a homemaker and previously married to the late Ted E. Mosier.

Surviving in addition to her husband is two daughters: Patricia M. Sumner and husband Nathan of Jonesville; and Brenda M. Moore and husband Don of Boiling Springs; two sons: Ted E. Moiser and Rickie and Tammy Lee Moiser all of Pacolet; one sister: Naomi Nixon and husband Larry of Ashbury, NC; three brothers Dennis Knighten and wife Jolen of Ashbury, NC, Robert Kighten and wife Eunice of Boiling Spring; Lewis Knighten and wife Mary of Fl.; a sister-in-law: Shirley Knighten of Fl.; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Caldwell was predeceased by a brother: Homer Knighten, a sister: Evelyn Davis; a brother-in-law: Ralph Davis; a daughter-in-law: Nancy Moiser.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, March 8, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Dennis Tessnier, Rev. Roy Smith and Rev. Dewayne Rueter. The burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs Nellie McDaniel Smith, age 78, widow of Herbert Eugene Smith of 122 Oak Grove Rd. Union, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Smith was born in Union July 3, 1931, a daughter of the late William S. And Nora Hord McDaniel. She was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and a graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Smith retired from Excel Hoisery.

Survivors are three daughters: Shirley M. Farr, Brenda S. Bogan and husband Wayne, and Sandra S. West and husband Gary all of Union; two sons: D.C. Smith and wife Connie, and Edward "Eddie" Smith all of Union; two sisters: Frances Hogan of Union; and Elizabeth Hogan of Laurens; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by two brothers: Malcolm and Copeland McDaniel.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Alan Gregory.

William Robert Sparks

Mr. William Robert Sparks, age 89, widower of Louise McBride Sparks, of 130 Hightower Lake Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Sparks was born in Union, April 13, 1920, a son of the late William Sparks and Marie Hewitt Sparks. He was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant after 40 years of service. Following his retirement, Mr. Sparks, went to work with his son in the race car business. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Navy. He was an avid Gamecock fan and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Mr. Sparks was a devoted husband for 63 years and a loving father, grandfather and friend.

Surviving are a son: Robert Glenn Sparks and his fiancee’ Connie with whom he made his home of Union; a daughter: Janice Babb and husband Walker of Buffalo; a sister: Mary Sparks Gossett of Union; 5 grandchildren: Bobby Sparks, Richard Sparks, Cindy Babb Moore, Amanda Sparks Howard and Tracey Sparks, 5 great-grandchildren; special friends: Colon and Maxine Duckett and his pet Jack Russell Terrier: Gizmo who accompained him through his illnesses. Mr. Sparks was predeceased by a grandson, David Babb and three brothers.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon.

The honorary escort will be Donna Stewart and Kayla Lovell.

William C. Foster
Spartanburg, SC

LTC William Charles "Bud" Foster died Saturday the 27th of February, 2010 at his home in Spartanburg, SC. He was born on the 22nd of May, 1932 in Greenville, South Carolina. He graduated from Jonesville High School, attended Clemson College, and graduated from Limestone College in 1982. With the exception of his military service, he was a lifelong resident of S.C.

LTC Foster enlisted in the United States Army in 1953. He graduated at the top of his class from Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1955. He served with distinction for 20 years and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a career Military Intelligence Officer assigned to the U.S. Army Security Agency and pioneered Electronic Warfare Operations in the U.S. Army. He received special recognition for his performance of duty as the 5th Army Project Officer directing the State Funerals for Former U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson. His 20 years of service included seven years of overseas duty, predominately in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Theater. He retired from active duty in 1973.

Following his retirement, he stayed busy with family, hobbies, and interests. He was an avid golfer and practiced photography professionally. He continued his public service while working as the Union County Coordinator in 1975 and serving with many community service organizations. His affiliations included the Scottish Rite Masons, the Shrine Temple, the International Toastmasters, the B.P.O.E. Elks, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Retired Officers Association.

His most cherished assignment in life, one fulfilled with love and devotion, was that of being a Father, a Dad and a Friend. He was loved and admired by many and his life leaves an indelible mark upon those with whom he served, befriended, and inspired.

He was predeceased by his parents J. V. "Shorty" Foster and Lenna Kerr Foster, and his sisters Martha Queen and Betty Robinson. He is survived by his four children: daughter, Mary Lyndon DeLoatch (Husband, Dr. Thomas DeLoatch) from Albany, GA; daughter, Cheryl Anne Foster Kimble (Husband, Scott Kimble) of Spartanburg, SC; son, Major William Michael Foster of Spartanburg, SC (deployed to Iraq); daughter, Cynthia Anne Foster Warthen (Husband, Randy Warthen) of Covington, GA; sister, Jo Ann Cordell of Union, SC; six Grandchildren and many loved Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at Jonesville United Methodist Church in Jonesville, South Carolina at 1:00 pm on Saturday the 6th of March, 2010. Service will be conducted by the Reverends "Woody" Wiggins and Will Malambri. The family will receive friends at the Church immediately following the service. The final burial service with full Military Honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery on the 18th of June, 2010. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or a charity of one’s choice.

Richard Stephenson

Mr. Richard Lee "Richie" Stephenson, age 41 of 101 Phifer Dr. Spartanburg, SC died unexpected Wednesday, March 3, 2010.

Mr. Stephenson was born in Union County November 3, 1968, a beloved son of Vernall Steve Stephenson, Jr. and the late Joretta Canupp Carter. He was a 1987 graduate of Union High School and received a Bachelor of Nursing Degree from USC. Mr. Stephenson was currently working for Service One Computer.

Mr. Stephenson was the beloved brother of: Stephanie S. Inglett, a niece: Rileigh Inglett both of Union; maternal grandmother: Esby Carter, and a uncle: Kevin Carter both of Lockhart; step-father: Eddie Canupp of Lockhart; a step-mother: Dianne Stephenson of Union. Mr. Stephenson was predeceased by his paternal grandfather: Vernal Stephenson, Sr. and paternal grandmother: Ruby Nance Stephenson.

Memorial services will be held 5:00 PM Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Branch. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 PM prior to the service.

Mrs. Ada Wilkins Ivey, age 93, widow of Elmos Ivey of 115 S. Main St., Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 1, 2010 at the Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg after a long illness.

Mrs. Ivey was born in Jonesville, October 16, 1916, a daughter of the late Eddie Hampton Wilkins and Addie Harmon Wilkins. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired from Community Cash in Jonesville and was also employed with Freeman Gas Co. Mrs. Ivey was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church where she served as secretary of the Sunday School Department. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Ivey was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son: Tommy Ivey and wife Rita of Jonesville; two grandsons: Cam Robinson and wife Nancy of Jonesville and Clint Robinson and wife Amanda of Pacolet; two great-grandchildren: Carson and Carter Robinson of Pacolet; nephews: Jimmy Wilkins and wife Diane, Edward Wilkins and wife Jennifer, R.J. Wilkins and Craig Wilkins and wife Chrissy all of Jonesville; a niece: Ann Chatman of Tryon, NC; a special caregiver: Judy Kerr of Jonesville. Mrs. Ivey was predeceased by a sister: Edith Wilkins Loven; a brother: Edward Hubert Wilkins; and a nephew: Johnny Wilkins.

Graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown.

Mr. Thomas D. "Buddy" Martin, age 64, husband of Jean Lee Martin of 166 Wedgewood Rd., Jonesville, SC went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Martin was born in Union, SC June 15, 1945, a son of the late William Henry Martin and Willie Rae Fowler Martin. He was formerly employed with Robinson’s Logging and was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: April M. Smith and husband Rev. Randy Smith and Gina M. Reynolds and husband Kirk of Gaffney; a cousin reared in the home, Diane Thomas of Union; four grandchildren: Rocky Smith, Ashley Dillon, Amber Benton and T.C. Reynolds and seven great-grandchildren: Cayla Smith, Abby and Ethan Smith, Marshall Dillon, Caleb Dillon, Makayla Benton and Jacob Benton.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.
