Joe Edward “Eddie” Hines, Sr.
Union, SC


Mr. Joe Edward “Eddie” Hines, Sr., age 72, of 860 Bob Adams Road, Union, husband of Rita Parks Hines, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Hines was born in Union, a son of the late Edward Faye and Rita Vaughan Hines. He graduated from Union High School and Spartanburg Technical College. After high school, he was employed by Torrington Company and later founded Hines Machine Shop in 1978. He was voted Small Business of the Year by the Union Chamber of Commerce in 1989. He served as Board Chairman and Assistant Fire Chief of Santuc Fire Department. He served as Commissioner of the Santuck Hebron Water Company. For many years he served on the Advisory Board of the Union County Vocational School and participated in their co-op program which provided training and careers for young high school students. Mr. Hines was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and RA director. He was also a member of Gideons International.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughter: Candee Humphries and husband, Frank, of Spartanburg; Haley LaMarche and husband, Matt, of Lexington; a son, Joey Hines, and wife, Kathryn, of Simpsonville. He has five grandchildren:  Zach Humphries and Anna Grace Humphries, both of Spartanburg; Hayden Elizabeth LaMarche, Bennett LaMarche, and Adaline LaMarche, all of Lexington; two sisters, Rita Faye Hines of Rock Hill and Rhonda Holloman of Chapin; his mother-in-law, Mary Lee Parks of Union; two sisters-in-law, Karen Greer and husband Paul, and Jane Arthur and husband, Gibby, both of Union. He is also survived by numerous uncles, aunts, and nephews.

Visitation will be held from on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Tommy Vaughn.

The following are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort: members of the Wilbur Smith Sunday School Class, Mark and Tracey Wade, Benjamin Wages, Dean and Jane Jones, Roger and Sara Wade, Maurice and Nancy Bevis, Dudley and Hazel Adams, Keith and Kathie Reynolds, Lynn and Debbie Eaves and former employees of Hines Machine Shop.

Michael Wayne “Mike” Hardin

Mr. Michael Wayne “Mike” Hardin, age 66, husband of Connie Humphries Hardin of 1475 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2019 at his home.

Mike was born April 13, 1953 in Chester, a son of the late Ralph Memory Hardin and Rachel Hughes Hardin.  He retired as a Machinist at Timken and previously worked at Union Nursery and Landscaping.  He owned and operated Mike’s Fireworks on Peach Orchard Rd. for over 40 years.  Mike was an active member of Union Church of God.  He was a former Volunteer Fireman at Monarch Fire Department.  Mike enjoyed coaching his Dixie Youth for many years and later enjoyed watching his grandchildren play.  He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Brian Hardin and wife Trina and Tracey Hardin Wade and husband Mark all of Union; four grandchildren Peyton Deskins (Katie Davis), Tanner Hardin, Libby Hardin, and Gavin Wade all of Union; two sisters-in-law, Tammie Mace and husband Jerry of Florida and their children, Velda Register and Kevin Mace (Joyce) and Cassie Humphries of Union and her children, Blake, Kaitlyn, and Alayna; and one brother-in-law, Alan Humphries and wife Miriam of Alaska and their children, Mark Humphries and James Humphries.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, July 1, 2019 at Union Church of God conducted by the Rev. Stewart Anderson, Rev. Tommy Brown, and Rev. Kevin Mace.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Mace, Alan Humphries, Joel Candler, Larry LeMaster, Jimmy Davis, Paul Harrison, Francis Ramsey, and Joel Rosson.  The following are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort, the Men’s Sunday School Class of Union Church of God, David and Harriett Eaves, Terry and Linda Mitchell, Sammy Kerhulas, and Squeaky Roark.

Gail Cleland Gosch Cudd

Gail was born November 3, 1939 in New Orleans, LA. She lived most of her life in Houston, TX.  She was a gifted artist, played the piano beautifully, enjoyed studying her Bible, helping others, going to Church, and listening to sermons online. Gail went to be with Jesus on Sunday June 23, 2019 in the Hospital in Spartanburg, SC due to complications from Pneumonia.  She was the daughter of the late Carl Christian Cleland, Sr. and Evangeline Messersmith Cleland. 

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Delbert (Donnie) Gosch; her son, Donnie Robert Gosch; her daughter, Debbie Gosch Cowan, and her brother, Gary Cleland. Survivors include her husband, Robert H Cudd Jr; her siblings, Carl Christian Cleland and Carlolyn Cleland Strain; son-in-law, Leland Cowan; daughter-in-law, Faith Gosch; stepsons Steve and Erik Cudd; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren with one arriving soon. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Carolina Baptist Church, 256 Floyd Rd, Spartanburg, SC  29303 on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 1pm.


Harold Dean Morris
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Harold Dean Morris, age 85, husband of Joyce Carter Morris of 433 Morris Farm Rd., Jonesville, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Morris was born January 15, 1934 in Union, a son of the late Pierce Morris and Myrtle Reeves Morris.  He was a 1952 graduate of Jonesville High School and retired as a dairy farmer and truck driver.  Mr. Morris was retired from the South Carolina National Guard after 30 years of service.  He was an active member of Oakbrook Community Church for 18 years before his health declined.  Mr. Morris was previously a member of Gilead Baptist Church for 66 years where he taught Sunday school, was a member of the choir, and a deacon.  He previously sang with various gospel groups.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 62 years are a daughter, Tamara Morris Burgess and husband Rev. Randy Burgess of Jonesville; two sons, Joel Dean Morris and wife Pam of Jonesville, and Eric Todd Morris and wife Tami of Granite Falls, NC; four grandchildren, Lacey Burgess, Jessica Morris Burgess and husband Aaron, Joshua Morris, and Katie Morris; four great-grandchildren, Mattilyn Burgess, Makenna Burgess, Jocie Burgess, and Levi Burgess; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by an infant son, Randall Wayne Morris; a sister, Rachel Morris Bobo; five brothers, Charles Morris, Francis Morris, John Morris, Don Morris, and Grayson Morris; and his mother and father-in-law, Guy and Martha Carter.

A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, June 30, 2019 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel, Union conducted by the Rev. Randy Burgess, Rev. Shawn Ingle, and Rev. Bill Adams.  Burial with Military Honors will follow at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Rev. Randy Burgess, Ray Gray, Mike Rector, Dennis Shetley, Donald Smith, and Robert White.  The following are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort, Bobby Lipsey, Nickie Ivey, and Bobbie Butts.

Mrs. Ruth Grant Garner, age 72, wife of Terry M. Garner of 207 Ridgeview Dr, Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

Mrs. Garner was born in Union, September 10, 1946, a daughter of the late Joseph “Joe” Grant, Jr., and Rosa Lee Smith Grant. She retired from Torrington Co. and was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mrs. Garner was a Sunday School teacher, Choir member, Vacation Bible School teacher and had also taught Children’s Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Amanda G. Martin and husband Chris of Union. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Grant.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Chaplain Dustin Miller.

The family will receive friends in the church from 1:00 until 2:00PM Thursday prior to the services.

Larry G. Wilson
Union, S.C.


Mr. Larry Gene Wilson, age 82, husband of Rebecca Dobson Wilson, of 400 Springdale Dr., Union, passed away Saturday June 22, 2019 after a five-year battle with ALS.

Mr. Wilson was born in Wellford, SC, January 9, 1937, a son of the late Russell Graham Wilson and Ruth Acton Wilson. He was a graduate of District Five High School and Clemson University where he was co-captain of the 1958 Baseball team that was the first to go to the College World Series. Larry was a member of the IPTAY for over 50 years, the Letterman’s Club, and the Union County Clemson Club. He supported Union County Athletics and served as Booster Club president for several years. He was awarded the Net Berry Award for his Clemson spirit and tradition.

Mr. Wilson was an associate with Milliken and Co. for 35 years. He loved the Ottaray and Monarch communities and worked there before moving to the Research Center in Spartanburg and later his retirement.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and enjoyed several mission trips.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years are his children, Joel Larry Wilson, Mary Kelley Wilson and grandchildren, Laurin Nicole Wilson, Peyton Caroline Wilson and Parker Graham Wilson.

A celebration of his life will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 30, 2019 at First Baptist Church. Family and friends will gather at the church at 2:00 PM for visitation.

William G. Kell

Mr. William Gene Kell, age 94, husband of Donna Nitz Kell of 106 Churchill St., Union, passed away Monday, June 24, 2019, at Pacifica Senior Living in Spartanburg.

Mr. Kell was born in Imboden, AK, August 21, 1924, but lived in Niles, MI during his formative years. He was a son of the late William Washington Kell and Marie Graham Kell. He was a graduate of Michigan State University on the GI Bill and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mr. Kell retired from The Whirlpool Corporation and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Union.

Mr. Kell was a veteran of the US Army during WWII and served with the 14th Armored Division, 25th Tank Battalion. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star for Valor, a Distinguished Service Medal, and numerous other campaign medals.

Surviving in addition to his wife a four daughters, Sheryl Price and husband Rusty of Union, Diane Gayle Kell and husband Russell Stolins of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Merrilee Kell Clark of Greenville and Karen Jean Kell and husband David Bailey of Goose Creek; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.  Mr. Kell was predeceased by a sister Patricia Ann Priest.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Byrd. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be Saturday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church prior to the services.

Mrs. Sharon Tucker Garner Coats, age 66, wife of Gary Wade Coats of Buffalo, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Coats was born in Union, April 30, 1953, a daughter of the late Curtis and Elizabeth Callahan Tucker. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended Winthrop College. Mrs. Coats retired from the US Postal Service after 28 years at the Buffalo Post Office and was formerly employed with United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.  She was a member of Welcome Baptist Church and loved singing in her church. She had also sung with the Carter Family and the Faith Chapel Singers. Mrs. Coats was first married to the late William “Big Bill” Garner.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter; Whitney Garner of Buffalo; three grandchildren, Journey Genesis Pinkney, Levi Jett Pinkney and Jalaina Hope Pinkney; two step-sons, Matt Coats and Rex Coats of Rochester, NY; a sister, Stephanie Bentley and husband George of Powdersville; a brother, Steve Tucker and wife Debbie of Union; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Karla Maness and special nephew, Justin Maness.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday June 25, 2019 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis. Burial will be at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Charles Edward “Cordwood” Robinson, age 65, husband of Debra Bledsoe Robinson of 212 Buffalo St., Buffalo, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Robinson was born in Union, November 15, 1953, a son of the late Edward and Julie Smith Robinson. He was retired from Dollar General Distribution and was formerly employed with United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.  Mr. Robinson enjoyed go-cart racing, classic cars and repairing engines. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church and the Duncan Masonic Lodge #256.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Erica R. Palmer and husband Christopher; a son, Jesse Robinson and wife Leah all of Union; two sisters, Brenda Boyter and husband Mike of Spartanburg and Glenda Sutton and husband Blane of Fairplay; three grandchildren, Lexi Robinson, Caylee Palmer and Jaxon Robinson. Mr. Robinson was predeceased by a son, Chad Everette Robinson.

Graveside services will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Union Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Mr. Jerry Wayne Foster, age 59, of 180 Lee Foster Rd., Union, passed away Thursday June 20, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Foster was born September 26, 1959 in Union, a son of the late Lee Foster and Katie Sumner Foster.  He was a graduate of Union High School and a retired textile worker.  Mr. Foster attended Lakeside Baptist Church.

Surviving are his significant other, Cathy Howell; two sisters, Teresa O’Shields and husband Ricky and Patricia Smith and husband William all of Union; a brother, Terry Foster of Cowpens; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Union Music Hall in the Nixon Center, conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb.  Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. William Rayburn Smith, age 74, husband of Mattie Stoudemire Vanderford, of 124 City View Circle, Union, passed away, Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born June 7, 1945 in Newberry, a son of the late Floyd Monroe Smith and Edna Tobias Smith.  He was a graduate of Newberry High School and retired as an electrician from I.B.E.W.  Mr. Smith was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and the Union Elk’s Lodge BPO No. 1321.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two special children, Julie Renee Kirby and Christopher Scott Vanderford; a brother, Maxie Smith; four special grandchildren, Destiney, Dalton, Kensley and Dakota Vanderford; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd Smith and Toby Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brian Childers.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the cemetery.

Martin Seymore

Mr. Martin Luther Seymore, age 81, husband of Hattie Seymore, of 146 Martin Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2019 at his home.

Martin was born April 5, 1938, in Newberry County. He was the son of the late Martin Luther, Sr. and Anna Rochester Seymore. Martin served his country for two years as a member of the United States Army and was retired from Sonoco Plastics. He was an active member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Martin also was a member of the Meansville-Riley Road Water Board.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hattie Grant Seymore; his grandsons, Jonathan Inman (Rebecca) and Scott Inman (Angela); a son-in-law, Mark Inman all of Union, a sister-in-law, Geraldine Seymore of Whitmire, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cindy Inman; sisters, Genola Alexander and Minnie Lou Shields; and a brother, Russell Seymore.

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Smith, Johnny Martin, Randy Wilburn, James Inabinet, Tony Collier, and Andy Bailey.

William Reginald “Bill” Yarbrough, Sr.

Mr. William Reginald “Bill” Yarbrough, Sr., age 83, husband of Dodie Pharr Yarbrough, of 122 O’Dell St., Whitmire, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at his home. 

Mr. Yarbrough was born June 6, 1936 in Whitmire, a son of the late William Dewitt Yarbrough and Virgie Thomas Yarbrough.  He was a graduate of Whitmire High School and continued his education through the South Carolina National Guard.  Mr. Yarbrough retired as a Lt. Col. after 38 years from the South Carolina National Guard, having served in the 4th Battalion in the 118th Infantry.  He was formerly employed with the South Carolina Housing Authority and American Security in Whitmire.  Mr. Yarbrough attended Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Lisa Bundrick and husband Ronnie of Whitmire; two sons, Reggie Yarbrough of Whitmire and Kyle Yarbrough of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Brooks.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2019 at Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Duncan. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at Whitmire Cemetery.

Christopher Keith “Slope” Peigler, age 33, of 114 Cedar St., Union, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Peigler was born in Union, July 10, 1985, a son of Lisa Wright Peigler and Kenneth “Kenny” Peigler, Jr. both of Union. He was a 2003 graduate of Union High School and attended Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Peigler was a member of New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother and father are his paternal grandparents with whom he made his home, Kenneth and Ann Peigler; his step-father, Michael “Slim” Gregory; a step-brother, Joshua Gregory and fiancée Sharon Bersad of Florida; cousins, Jayci Wright, J.T. Wright, Whitney Duncan, Jonie Wilson and husband Joey, John Duncan and a nephew, A.J. Gregory. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Robert and Catherine Wright.

Graveside services will be held at 4:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2019 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jerry McKee.

Mrs. Alexander was born in June 23, 1954 in Union, a daughter of the late Earl Gault Rector and Avonelle Lipsey Rector.  She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired as Manager from Willard Oil Company.  Mrs. Alexander was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving are three daughters, Jennifer Denise Alexander of Jonesville, DeAnn Alexander Tucker and husband Richard of Waco, TX, and Marah Lea Alexander; three special daughters, Marsha Gossett of Union, B.J. Lillard of Simpsonville, and Tiara Mills of Mississippi; one sister, Karen V. Whitehead and husband Charles of Union; two brothers, Frances Earl “Buddy” Vaughan of Jonesville and Earl Eugene Rector of Union; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by two sisters, Tammy Tilley and Miriam Jan Cooper and two brothers, Stanley Vaughan and Steve Rector.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Scott Cannon.  Burial will follow at Lee Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Alan Rector, Jason Rector, Rodney Woody, Nathan Alexander, Jason Alexander, Larry Wayne Knox, and Darryl Roberts.

Mr. Benjamin Gerald Tucker, Sr., age 59, of 2428 Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019 at his home.     

Mr. Tucker was born in Union, February 16, 1960, a son of the late Grady Lee Tucker, Sr. and Benny Johnson Tucker. He graduated from Union High School in 1978 and was retired.  Mr. Tucker was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Surviving are his fiancée, Frona Phillips of the home; a son, Benjamin Gerald Tucker, Jr. and wife, Julie of New Richmond, Wisconsin; a brother, Grady Tucker, Jr. of Buffalo; the mother of his children, Tammy Smith Tucker; and four grandchildren, Aubrie Tucker, Brennon Tucker, Trevor Lee Turner, and Taegen Bishop.  He was predeceased by one daughter, Shannon Elizabeth Tucker.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Melvin Shelton.

Mr. Williams was born in Union, April 7, 1943, a son of the late John Baxter Williams and Inez Mary Murphy Williams. He was retired from Torrington Co. and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Travis Scott Williams and wife Julie of Columbia and Kevin Williams and wife Gretchen of Alabama; two sisters, Frances Green of Union and Ruby Eubanks of Spartanburg; eight grandchildren: Brittany W. Holm of Swansee, Ryan Williams of Cowpens, Ramie Williams and Madison Williams of Alabama, Brandon Garner of Spartanburg, Bronson Garner of Union; Breea Adams and Trenda Williams both of Columbia and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Williams was predeceased by four sisters, Christina McNeace, Mary Nell Black, Ruth McNeace and Shirley Pearson, and two brothers, Rev. Boyd Williams and Donald B. Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Scott and Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be a Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Michael Brent Youngblood, age 68 of 218 Lee Road, Jonesville, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Youngblood was born in Union, SC June 4, 1951, a son of Ferol Lancaster Youngblood and the late Ray W. Youngblood. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from Timken in Gaffney. Mr. Youngblood was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church and was an avid hunter. He also had a love for horses.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two sons: Hunter Youngblood and wife Shae of Union and Will Youngblood and wife Haley of Jonesville; three grandchildren: Kori Youngblood of Jonesville and Nate Youngblood and Mason Youngblood all of Union; numerous cousins and special friends, Charles Mason, Jr, Frank Baldwin and Danny Ledford.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Don Alexander and Mr. Danny Ledford. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ronnie Gene Lawson of 461 Bailey Rd., Buffalo, age 79, widower of Cora Ann Pruitt Lawson, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Lawson was born in Spartanburg, SC (Mt. Lebanon Community) January 26, 1939, a son of the late George W. Lawson and Maebelle Simmons Lawson. He retired from Duke Power and was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Mr. Lawson was the last surviving member of twelve children.

Surviving are a daughter, Rhonda Stevens and husband Tim of West Springs; two sons: Joey Lawson and wife Holly and Ray Lawson all of Buffalo; a sister-in-law, Joanne Lawson of Pauline; four grandchildren: Andrea Stevens and husband Clay, Zachary Lawson, Jordan Lawson and Delaney Lawson; a great-grandson, Traveller Stevens-Vaughn and a great-granddaughter on the way and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton. Mr. Lawson’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Mrs. Lila Kate “Kakie” Nichols White, age 67, of 201 Wimbleton Road, Union, wife of Samuel Watson White, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019 at Spartanburg Hospice Home.

Mrs. White was born November 30, 1951 in Union, a daughter of Dorothy Smith Nichols and the late James Arledge Nichols, Sr.  She graduated from Union High School in 1970 and from Winthrop College in 1974.  Mrs. White retired as Director of Union County Department of Social Services and served on the Union County School Board for sixteen years.  She was a former member of the Disability and Special Needs Board. Mrs. White was a very active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of the Personnel Committee and was currently serving as a Sunday School teacher, as she had for many years.  She had previously served on the Children’s, Youth, and Baptism committees at Tabernacle.  Mrs. White was taught by her father how to fly and at the age of 21 soloed for the first time in September 9, 1973.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a daughter, Josie Kate White; a son, Samuel F. White and wife, Jill; two grandsons, Brandon Davis White and Christopher White, all of Union; a sister, Tweedie Nichols Mills and husband, Mike of Salem Cross Roads; a brother, William Smith “Skee” Nichols of Union; three sisters-in-law, Shelia Nichols, Jo Avery and husband Parks, and Jan Bradley and husband Brad; nieces and nephews, Emily Curry, Ashley Taylor, Nic Mills, Tripp Nichols, Amy Bradley, Ryan Bradley, Pamela Deale, and Christina Gilham; and a number of great-nieces and a great-nephew.  She was predeceased by a brother, James A. “Bubba” Nichols, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tommy Vaughn and Mr. Mike Mills.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bobby Gene Keisler, age 86, of 503 Lakeview Heights, Union, widower of Carole Dean Mosley Keisler, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mr. Keisler was born December 20, 1932 in York, a son of the late Lawrance Keisler and Corrie Mitchell.  He was a graduate of Union High School and retired as a supervisor at Buffalo Mill.  Mr. Keisler was a Veteran of the United States Army where he served during the Korean War Era as a Staff Sargent.  He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Elder and was very active in the Channel of Blessings Ministry.

Surviving are a daughter, Robin Ammons of Union; two sons, David Keisler and wife Edythe of Elgin and Rev. Neil Keisler and wife Dale of Pauline; a brother, William Keisler and wife Carole of Union; eight grandchildren, Derrick Keisler and fiancée Brittany, Chad Bailey and wife Heather, Marissa Keisler, Kristin Keisler, Cobee Keisler, Christopher Keisler, Jacob Keisler, and Jada Wyrich; and five great-grandchildren, Calli Keisler, Peyton Keisler, Jace Keisler, Bobby Maire Bailey, and Kylyn Clarke.  He was predeceased by a daughter, Phyllis Jean Keisler; a sister, Annie Mae Ruest; and three brothers, Leroy Mitchell, Fred Keisler, and Paul Keisler.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Neil Keisler.

William Fred “Bill” Stoddard
Clinton, SC


Mr. William Fred (Bill) Stoddard, 96, a resident of Union, SC for 50 years, died on June 11, 2019, at Presbyterian Communities of SC-Clinton. Mr. Stoddard was born on October 30, 1922, at Owings, SC. He was the son of the late Fred Stewart and Theresa Darby Stoddard.

Mr. Stoddard was employed for most of his career in the life insurance industry in management and sales. He was a ‘cradle Presbyterian’ and a member for fifty years of First Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Union (now Union Presbyterian Church). He served the church in many capacities including Deacon, Elder, teacher of the Anderson Bible Class, and as moderator of both The Presbytery of the Piedmont (now Foothills) and Providence Presbytery. Elected as a commissioner to the 204th Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly, he traveled to Milwaukee in 1992 to faithfully serve his church and Christ. His eight years of service as a trustee of Thornwell, a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) affiliated home for children in Clinton, was one of his most rewarding life experiences.

Mr. Stoddard was predeceased by his wife of 70 years Doris Senn Stoddard and his oldest son William Fred Stoddard, Jr.. He is survived by a son and daughter, James Alan Stoddard (Christie) of Greenville, and Peggy S. Perrow (Moss) of Cameron; daughter-in-law, Marilyn S. Stoddard of Union; four grandsons, William Bryson Stoddard of Charleston, Adam Holman Perrow (Stacey) of Charlotte, Stewart Moss Perrow (Betsy) of St. Matthews and Steven Neal Stoddard of Reidville; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Francis S. Coleman of Fountain Inn; and brothers, Jerry Stoddard of Laurens, Carl Stoddard of Raleigh, and Ray Stoddard of Owings; plus many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Jim Caprell and the Rev. Sanders Read at Owings Presbyterian Church in Owings, SC on June 17, at 10:30 am.

Richard Thomas “Rock” Adams

Richard Thomas “Rock” Adams passed away peacefully on June 10, 2019. Rock was born on May 26, 1936 in Buffalo, SC. He was the son of Nervielee Turner Adams Eubanks and Linder Ray Adams.

Upon graduating from Union High School in 1954, Rock went on to serve 29 years on the South Carolina Highway Patrol.  He was first stationed in Dillon, SC before moving to Spartanburg County in 1964. After retiring from the South Carolina Highway Patrol as a Sergeant, Rock was elected to the Spartanburg County Council in 1996 and held office until 2008.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geraldine Bishop Adams; daughter Kimberly Adams Nelson (John Nelson); grandchildren Adam, Shelby and Samuel Nelson, his pride and joy; sister Mary Adams Inglett of Union; a niece, Lydia Inglett and nephews Jeff, Eric, and Russell Inglett. 

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ann Treadway Lancaster, age 83, of 499 Gist Bridge Rd., Buffalo, widow of Thomas Bruce Lancaster, Sr., passed away Monday, June 10, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Lancaster was born October 23, 1935 in Union, a daughter of the late Curtis Stephen Treadway, Sr. and Pauline Walker Treadway.  She was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College.  Mrs. Lancaster retired from the Union County Auditor’s Office.  She was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Lancaster was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Roark and husband Steve of Buffalo; two sons, Tommy Lancaster and wife Audrey of Buffalo and Michael Lancaster and wife Cathy of Inman; four grandchildren, Tara Shetley and husband David of Union, Adam Roark and wife Ashley of Spartanburg, Brandi Bennett and husband Blake of Inman, and Cameron Lancaster and wife Jacque of Tryon; and six great-grandchildren, Polly Turner and husband Brandon, Mahlon Shetley, Gavin Bennett, Addison Bennett, Ayden Roark, and Ansley Roark.  She was predeceased by five brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Dr. Martha Toney.

John William “Jay” Cribbs, Jr., age 14, of 1115 Kelly Rd., passed away Friday, June 7, 2019.

Jay was born in Spartanburg, April 13, 2005, a son of John Cribbs and Christina Hope Vinson Adams both of Union. Jay was a rising freshman at Union County High School having finished the eighth grade at Sims Middle School. He loved all sports especially baseball, basketball, football and the Clemson Tigers. Jay played Little League baseball for the E-Z Money ball team and loved playing video games. He attended Welcome Baptist Church with his family.

Surviving are a sister, Brianna Alexis Cribbs of the home; two brothers, Liam Braydon Cribbs of Rock Hill and Ayden Adams of Union; his paternal grandmother, Jean Pettit Sailors of the home; his maternal grandmother, Bonnie Gault; his maternal great-grandmother, Shirley Gault; his maternal grandfather, Gene Vinson and wife Melissa; his maternal great-grandfather, Billy Vinson all of Union and a very special friend, Emma Cate Childers and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.

Mrs. Kandy Prince Bobo, age 61, wife of Dale Bobo of Union, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at her home after battling Stage IV Lung Cancer.

Kandy was born January 20, 1958 in Union, a daughter of the late Richard “Bo” and Doris Prince.  She was a faithful member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she volunteered with AWANA.  Kandy and her husband Dale owned and operated Bobo Appliance Service where she worked for over 20 years.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband Dale of 45 years are two sons, Roger D. Bobo and wife Jennie and Brian Bobo; two brothers, Richard “Bokie” Prince and Joey Prince and wife Amy; two granddaughters, Hayley and Brooklyn Bobo; and three grandsons, RJ Bobo, Drew Loftis, and Luke Loftis.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, June 7, 2019 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Chris Gulledge and Rev. Benny Green.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Charles Richard Gowan, II, age 63, of 1025 Meansville Rd., Union, widower of Debbie Staggs Gowan, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Gowan was born in Union, November 6, 1955, a son of the late Charles Richard Gowan, Sr. and Helen Louise Tucker Gowan.  He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from textiles.  Mr. Gowan attended Westside Baptist Church and was a former mason. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Stacy Gowan and wife Stacy of Clinton; a special friend, Patty Eubanks Nave of the home, two nephews, David Gowan and Danny Gowan of Union; a sister-in-law, Pam Gowan of Union; grandchildren, Reese Gowan, Riley Gowan, Bella Gowan and Seth DeShields. Mr. Gowan was predeceased by a brother, Allan Lee Gowan.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.

The family will be at their respective homes.

Mr. Charles Arthur Newton, age 70, of 401 W. South St., Union, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Newton was born January 13, 1949 in Hartford, Connecticut, a son of the late Irving Edward Newton and Leo Melle Kelly Newton.  He attended Union High School and Massey Junior College in Atlanta and USC-Union.  Mr. Newton retired from Timken and had formerly worked at Z.F. Company in Gray Court.  He was a Veteran of the United States Navy and was a member of the Union Jaycees for a number of years.

Surviving are two sons, Robbie Newton and wife Peggy of the home and Brian D. Newton of Union; a sister, Pam N. Phipps and husband Sam of Union; two sisters-in-law, Debra B. Newton and Karen Newton; and two grandsons, Jackson Newton and Cole Newton.  He was predeceased by two brothers, James E. Newton and Thomas A. Newton and one sister, Andrea Rhymer.

A private memorial service was held by the family.
