Mr. Gerald Lee Lanier, age 59 of 211 N 1st Street, Lockhart, SC, widower of Mary Childers Lanier, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017.

Mr. Lanier was born in Union, SC June 10, 1958, a son of the late Bobby Simpson Lanier and Louise Bright Lanier.

Surviving are a son, Jackie Lee Lanier of Lockhart; three sisters: Karen Lanier of the home, Robin Palmer and Carolyn Dianne Thomas both of Union.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Lockhart Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the graveside following the service.

James E. Dill
Union, S.C.


Mr. James Edward Dill, age 80, husband of Audry Evans Dill of 303 N. Mountain St., Union, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Dill was born in Gaffney, May 20, 1937, a son of the late Fred and Iva Knight Dill. He was retired from construction and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter Karen Owen and husband Brian of Roseboro, NC; a son Mark Dill of the home; a sister, Helen Crocker of Charlotte and eleven grandchildren.  Mr. Dill was predeceased by a son, James Edward Dill, II and a brother Harold Dill.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the chapel of First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Kermit Morris.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the church chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to First Baptist Church, Youth Ministry, 405 E. Main St., Union, SC  29379.

John David Canupp

Mr. John David Canupp, age 65, of 1923 Barnwell St., Columbia, widower of Kellie Canupp, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center.

Mr. Canupp was born in York Co., February 28, 1952 a son of the late Marion and Martha Inman Canupp. He was retired from textiles and was a veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are a daughter, Sherry Canupp Rhinehart and husband William of Great Falls; two sisters, Betty Blackwell and husband Jerry of Blacksburg and Shirley McDaniel and husband Floyd of Hickory Grove; one brother, Jim Canupp and wife Rose Marie of Sharon. Mr. Canupp was predeceased by a sister, Ann Cromer and a brother, Frazier Canupp.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 30, 2017 at Bullocks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Michael Goodwin and Rev. Jeff Gilfillan.

Active pallbearers will be Jim Canupp, Jr., Preston Parris, Jonathan Parris, Michael McDaniel, Jerry Blackwell and Jeremy Blackwell.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the services.

Rebecca A. Anglin

Mrs. Rebecca Ann Levister Anglin, age 60 of Spartanburg, passed away Monday June 26, 2017 at the home of her daughter in Woodruff.

Mrs. Anglin was born in Chester SC, August 2, 1956, a daughter of the late Richard Carl and Rebecca Morris Levister Belue. She was retired from Action Builders as a wallpaper specialist and was a member of First Baptist Church of Carlisle. Mrs. Anglin was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Jeanieann Janis and husband Michael; six grandchildren, Unarebecca Ann Morgan, Porshiamarie Ann Burrow, Jasmine Parrish, Ally Mendez, Dustin Dean Burrow and Dustin Michael Janis and 5 great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Anglin was predeceased by five brothers, Joe Levister, John Levister, Jerry Greene, Richard “Smiley” Levister and Pete Levister.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Jeanieann and Michael Janis, 460 W. Georgia St., Woodruff.

Katherine K. Crosser

Mrs. Katherine Jean Kirby “Kathy” Crosser, age 69, of 121 Dana Tara Lane, Buffalo, widow of Joe Lee Crosser, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Crosser was born in Tacoma, WA, January 30, 1948, a daughter of the late Nesbitt and Eva Pedersen Kirby.  She retired from Epic Asset Management and was formerly employed with National Plaque and Her Majesty in Union.  Mrs. Crosser attended the Union Church of God and was a member of the Widow/Widowers Club at Augsburg Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Shane Kirby of the home and Allen David Walters and wife Tina of Jonesville; three sisters, Marian Birch of Buffalo, Shirley Moreno of Reno, NV and Barbara Blank of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Erik Lollis, Chasity Miller, Ryan Walters and Kimberly Walters Estes and two great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Crosser was predeceased by two sisters, Alice McCarthy and Carol Mains and by two brothers, Bob Olson and Raymond Olson.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Union Church of God conducted by Rev. Stewart Anderson.

The family will be at the home, 121 Dana Tara Lane, Buffalo, where they will receive friends after 12 noon Saturday.

William T. Howell, Sr.
Sumter, SC


Mr. William T. Howell, Sr., age 102 of 2170 Graystone Dr.,Sumter, SC , widower of Edith Kirby Howell, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Palmetto Health, Tuomey Hospital.

Mr. Howell was born in Cherokee County, SC March 12, 1915, a son of the late Willie Howell and Bridgie Howell. He was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Howell retired as co-owner of Bridges Construction in Heath Springs and was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II.

Surviving are two sons: Steve Howell and wife Tami and Tommy Howell and wife Sandra all of Sumter; a sister, Sara Ann Farr of Pea Ridge; three brothers: Donald Hope Howell of Union, Charles Howell of Charleston and Bill Howell of Laurens; five grandchildren: Grayson Howell, Marcus Howell, Mallissia Howell White, Trey Howell and Stephanie Howell Barrineau; fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Howell was predeceased by a sister, Callie Clark and brothers, J.E. Howell, Eugene Howell, Ned Howell, Irvin Lee Howell, Russell Howell and Howard Howell.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mike Moody. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Matthew Douglas Meador
Union, SC


Matthew Douglas Meador, age 28, of 300 Wilson St., Union, passed away on June 18, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, after a 23-year battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Matthew was born in Spartanburg, December 20, 1988, a son of Richard Douglas Meador and Mitzi Gibson Meador. He attended Union High School and was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church. In spite of all he endured, he was known for the sweet smile he always had on his face. He had such a big loving heart. He will be forever missed until he and Jesus greet us into the gates of Heaven. There are no wheelchairs in Heaven.  
Matthew loved cars and modifying them, building and shooting guns, playing his Xbox, photography, riding 4 wheeler back in the day, Road Atlanta and the Petit Le Mans, The 24 Hours of Le Mans Race, Formula One Racing, multi-class road racing, the sound of  a v12 Ferrari, a radial airplane engine, a rb26dett, a big cammed-up big block Chevy, a big turbo spooling, a jet fighter and squealing tires, r/c planes, trucks, and multi rotors, quadcopters, WW I and WW II military history, geography, science, space stuff, the history of firearms, Dale Earnhardt back in the day when NASCAR was still good, aviation and airplanes. He loved the smell of burning rubber, nitromethane, a tire shop, sweet summer nights cruising in his s14 and leaded high-octane race fuel. He loved music of all kinds it kept him sane, it understood him, it helped him cope, it was therapy for him, and it was always there for him; absolutely loved street racing and didn’t regret a minute of it. He always dreamed of getting his pilot’s license and going flying, going to Japan, riding in a fighter jet, and going to a Formula One race.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two uncles, Gene Meador and wife Lynn of Summerville and Tim Gibson and wife Robin of Cowpens; one aunt, Carolyn G. Brown and husband John of Spartanburg and two cousins, Heidi B. Jones and Adam Brown.  He was predeceased by his grandparents, the late A. D. (Doug) Meador, Jr. and Gwen Jolly Meador of Union, the late Gid and Betty Barnette Gibson of Cowpens, and great grandmothers, the late Nan Gibson Mathis of Cowpens and the late Ada Stacy Barnette of Spartanburg and the late Ruby Corn Jolly of Union.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Matthew’s cousin, Rev. Michael Neuse and Rev. Chris Gulledge.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens. At Matthew’s request, loud fast cars, engine revs, launch control revs, and burnouts are to accompany him to the cemetery; friends invite friends to be part of car show and line up and sticker bomb his casket.

Active pallbearers will be Pat McNeace, Jordi Parker, Tyler Heatherly, Caleb Roark, Johnny Hagan and Jason Tilghman.

Visitation will be held Friday evening 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

James M. Arthur, Jr.

Mr. James M. “Jimmy” Arthur, Jr., age 76, husband of Penny Hecht Arthur of 320 Westminister Circle, Union, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Woodruff Manor after an extended illness.

Mr. Arthur was born in Union, February 20, 1941 a son of the late Ophelia McSwain Howell and the late James M. Arthur, Sr., and Jane Gibbs Arthur. He was a graduate of Union High School and Wofford College. Mr. Arthur retired from United Merchants and retired from the S.C. National Guard.  He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he had served as a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Arthur was a former Boy Scout Leader of Troop #48 and a former Red Cross Swimming Instructor. He was also a former member of the BPO Elks Lodge. Mr. Arthur was an avid Yellow Jacket fan attending as many Friday night games as possible.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Becky A. Gressette and husband Sidney from Rock Springs, WY; a son, Andy Arthur and wife Leigh Ann of Florence; three grandsons, Drew, Will, and Luke Arthur; two sisters, Amy Kosanovic and husband Ric of Murfreesboro, TN and Debbie Baskin and husband Barry of Charleston; three brothers, Gibby Arthur and wife Jane of Union, Robert Arthur and wife Heather of Franklin, TN and Charlie Howell of Charleston.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz.

Active pallbearers will be Don Martin, Earl Hendrix, David Turner, William Earl Sprouse, Torrence Inman and Mack McNease.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the Family Life Center of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Michael Lee “Mike” Wilson

Mr. Michael Lee “Mike” Wilson, age 48 of 316 Railroad Street, Union passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Wilson was born in Sneedville, TN July 25, 1968 a son of the late Lewis Wilson and Pauline Wallen Wilson Brock and the stepson of Buddy Brock of Union.  He was formerly employed with Leiberhart Mill and Holcombe Funeral Home. 

Surviving are one daughter, Chesley Wilson of Union and Christopher Wilson and wife Taralynn of Oak Island, NC; one sister, Linda “Cookie” Russell of Union; two brothers, Mickey Wilson and Doug Wilson both of Union; four grandchildren, Christian Wilson, Natalie Wilson, Eason Wilson and Taliyah Mitchell; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one brother, Eddie Wilson.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Paul R. ‘Ricky’ White, Sr.

Mr. Paul Richard “Ricky” White, Sr., age 58 of 378 Beltline Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017 at his home.

Mr. White was born in Union, March 21, 1959, a son of Doris Garner White Burrell of Union and the late Paul White.  He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Triangle Maintenance in Moore. Mr. White was formerly employed with Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing and attended Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. He was a thirteen-year member of the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit serving as a medic.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a daughter; Jenna White of Ft. Gordan, GA; two sons, Paul Richard White, Jr. of Union and Gerald White of Rock Hill; a sister, Joyce Ivey of Jonesville; a brother, Steve White of Virginia; several nieces and nephews and his beloved German Shephard, “Bo”.  Mr. White was predeceased by two sisters, Karen Jones and Betty Austin and two brothers, Timothy White and James White.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey.

The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the services.

Jerry Von “Pancake” Plemons, Sr.

Mr. Jerry Von “Pancake” Plemons, Sr., age 76, of 110 Poppy Lane, Union, widower of Ruby Lee Plemons, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Plemons was born in Union, SC April 1, 1941 a son of the late Alphonzo “Fido” Plemons and Aileen Guyton Plemons.  He was retired from Union County Public works and had previously worked at Cone Mill and Torrington Co.  Mr. Plemons was a member of Putman Baptist Church.  He was an avid CB radio Operator and fisherman.

Surviving are one daughter, Ginger Latimer and husband Daryl of Inman; three sons, David Plemons and wife Candy of Chesnee, Timothy C. Plemons and wife Jimmie of Union and Jerry Von Plemons, Jr., and wife Lisa; one brother, Joe Plemons and wife Joyce of Buffalo; ten grandchildren, Sarah Plemons, Brandon Plemons, Kyle Plemons, Allen Etters, Heather Llewellyn, Casey Etters, Alexys Plemons, Jesse Plemons, Tyra Latimer, and Davario Clinkscales; and eleven great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by two sisters, Peggy Gregory and Norma Sue Nance and two brothers, Ted Plemons and Jim Guyton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tommy Mann and Mr. Ted Wilbanks.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be David Becknell, Lynn Mitchell, Allen Etters, Kyle Plemons, Danny Jones, Brandon Plemons, and Seth Cash.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

William Larkin “Billy” Trantham

Mr. William Larkin “Billy”Trantham, age 70, of 1817 Jonesville Hwy., Union widower of Melinda Ann Fleming Trantham, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Trantham was born in Union, SC October 29, 1946 a son of the late William Thomas Trantham and Effie Gaynelle Franklin Trantham.  He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Cedar Hill Plant. 

Surviving are three sisters, Bobbie T. Barber and husband Charles, Andrea T. Whitener, and Linda T. Betenbaugh all of Union; one brother, Wayne A. Trantham of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by four sisters, Rebekah DeBruhl, Sarah T. Belue, Mary T. Hodge, and Myrtle T. Bolton and one brother, Thomas Trantham.

Graveside services will be held 12:00 Noon Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be held after the services at the cemetery.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Andrea Whitener, 107 Crestview Dr., Union, SC 29379.


Heather B. Parks
Buffalo, S.C.


Heather Jane Bennett Parks left this earth to be with her lord and savior June 4th 2017, she was 48 years old. Heather was born 7-27-1968 to Sheldon Lee Bennett and Helen Patterson Bennett.

Heather leaves behind her husband Joey Parks, her Father, a sister (Shannon McGee) a brother (Oren Bennett) a special grandson Ty
, a nephew David and niece Elisha. Heather was predeceased by her mother and one sister(Susan). Heather was a loving soul who befriended and affected so many people in a positive way, she never met a stranger.

A celebration of life will be at midway BBQ Saturday June 10th from 4 to 6pm


Howard Eugene Goins

Mr. Howard Eugene “Cooter” Goins, age 75, husband of Margie Boulware Goins of 2190 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Union Medical Center.

Mr. Goins was born in Union, April 27, 1942, a son of the late David Jackson Goins, Sr. and Lona Esther Johnson Goins.  He was a retired textile worker and a veteran of the US Army. Mr. Goins was also a former member of the S.C. National Guard. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and a former member of the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Dept.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Amy Griffith and husband Wayne of Buffalo; a sister, Peggy Goins of Buffalo; two grandchildren, Jacob Ty Griffith and Katelin Amber Griffith all of Buffalo; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters and their husbands, Ruth Goins, Betty Revis, Thelma Brock and husband Wallace, Maggie Millwood and husband Roger, and Addie Mae Greene and husband Lloyd, and five brothers and their wives, David “D.J.” Jackson and wife Ruby, Elmer Goins, Bobby Goins, Edward Goins and wife Shirley and Charlie Goins.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Roy Turner, Gerald Goins, Jackie Phipps, James Sinclair, Eddie Goins and Stan Ashmore.

Mrs. Sarah Lawson Childers, age 77, wife of Rev. Paul Thomas Childers of 109 South 4th Street, Lockhart, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Union Medical Center.

Mrs. Childers was born in Union, SC September 9, 1939, a daughter of the late James Vernon Lawson and Sarah Vaughan Lawson. She was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and was a member of BPO Does. Mrs. Childers was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.          

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Ginger Vinson and husband Terry; a son, Rev. Brian Childers and wife Regina; three grandchildren: Tania Cabiness, Ivy Smith and husband Trey and Brina Childers; a great-grandchild, Dylan Cabiness; three sisters: Anne Patrick, Jean Harvey and husband Ken and Patricia Vanderford and three brothers: Joe Lawson and wife Susan, Donald  “Ducky” Lawson and Bob Lawson and wife Ruth. She was predeceased by a daughter, Paulette Childers; a grandson, Kenny Cabiness; a sister, Elizabeth “Peanut” Ridgeway and four brothers, Pete Lawson, William Lawson Lloyd Lawson and Fred Lawson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Kenneth Cash, Rev Ralph Byars and Rev. Brian Childers. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Troy Vaughan, Michael Fleming, Scott Roark, Eric Allison, Arthur Jordan, Barry Anderson, Dale Lattimore and Jerry Jordan. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Ladies of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church, Carrie Bell Lattimore, Linda Jordan and Ruth Dabbs.

Alfred Emmanuel “Al” Smith

Mr. Alfred Emmanuel “Al” Smith, age 88, of 207 Spruce St., widower of Elizabeth Morris “Lib” Smith, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, SC April 14, 1929 a son of the late Russell Sam Smith and Alma Lawson Smith.  He was a graduate of Union High School, Wofford College where he received a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Business, and Watch Repair School in Spencer, NC.  Mr. Smith and his wife, Lib, owned and operated Smith’s Jewelry Store on Main Street.  He was a Veteran of the United States Army and the South Carolina National Guard—Union Unit having served for 20 years.  Mr. Smith was a proud member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon, Youth Leader, and Sunday School Teacher.  He loved his church community and family dearly.

Surviving are, one daughter, Beth Smith Justice and husband Todd of Buffalo; two sons, Thomas Russell Smith and Joe R. Smith both of Union; two brothers, Everette Smith of Durham, NC and Rod Smith of Prosperity, SC; a special friend, William Howell of Sumter, SC; two granddaughters, Nikki S. Robinson and husband Trad and Katy Beth Seaburg and husband Wesley; four grandsons, Bryan Robinson and wife Audrey, Brett Robinson and wife Tiffany, Rusty Smith, and Joseph Smith; two step-granddaughters, Ashley J. Reese and husband Chris and Amber Justice; one great-granddaughter, Selah Kate Robinson; seven grandsons, Westley, Jacob, Maddox, Thomas, and Martin Robinson and Weston and Walker Seaburg.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Mike Moody and Rev. Dr. Tommy Vaughn.  Burial with full Military Honors will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bryan Robinson, Brett Robinson, Trad Robinson, Rusty Smith, Wesley Seaburg, and Joseph Smith.  The Fellowship Sunday School of Tabernacle Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Lucille Stewart Craig, age 93 formerly of Sedalia, widow of John Edward Craig,  passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Waterford @ Dillon Point, Spartanburg.

Mrs. Craig was born in Union, SC December 31, 1923, a daughter of the late Walker Poole Stewart and Bessie Kate Stewart. She was a graduate of Sedalia School House and was formerly employed with the Hosiery Mill, Saluda, SC. Mrs. Craig was a lifelong member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are two nieces: Teresa Hoffberg of Union and Melissa Schoeffel of Charleston and a great-niece, Katie Schoeffel of Charleston. Mrs. Craig was predeceased by a sister, Bessie Stewart Malpass.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, June 5, 2017 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Robin Jones, Stephen Stone, Anthony Schoeffel, Howard Hoffeberg, Jr., Reid Stone and Tommy Inman.

Visitation will be held 12:00-1:00 PM in the church prior to the service.

Mrs. Norma Kingsmore Henderson, age 70, of 804 Riley Rd., Buffalo, widow of Ronald A. Henderson passed away, Thursday, June 1, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Henderson was born in Buffalo, SC a daughter of the late Harold and Betty Lancaster.  She was a graduate of Union High School and Kings College in Charlotte, NC.  Mrs. Henderson was retired from Torrington & Company and following her retirement she worked at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind.  She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.  Mrs. Henderson was loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Surviving are one son, David Henderson of Buffalo; two daughters, Amy Gunter and husband Michael of Lexington and Emily Ryan and husband Jason of Myrtle Beach; one brother, Jimmy Kingsmore and wife Rozzie of Buffalo; two sisters, Nancy Long and husband Mack of Buffalo and Lou Ann Medford and husband Barry of Union; one aunt, Patsy Johnson of Jonesville; one sister-in-law, Faye Henderson Moss of Kennesaw, GA; one brother-in-law, Ken Henderson of Union; six grandchildren, Bethany Henderson, Tyler Gunter, Ethan Gunter, Jacob Gunter, Alexa Ryan, and Elias Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews including a special great niece, Olivia Long.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Lynn Ford.  Burial will follow at West Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Alvin Theodore Gillian, age 73, widower of Lois Brewington Gillian, formerly of Buffalo, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Spartanburg Medical Center.         

Mr. Gillian was born in Union, SC October 26, 1943, a son of the late James Henry Gillian, Sr and Bonnie Lovelace Gillian. He retired from Cone Mill and was a Veteran of the S.C. National Guard following forty-one years of service. Mr. Gillian was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department, Duncan Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, ASA Umpire and also a member of the American Legion Post #87.

Surviving are two daughters: Cindy Shetley and husband Dennis of Union and Lisa Donnahoo and husband Dennis of Chesnee; a grandson, Landon Donnahoo of Chesnee; three sisters: Shirley Michaud and husband Gerald of Norfolk, NY, Deloris Lowe and husband John and Brenda Ballard and husband Wayne all of Union; a brother, J.H. Gillan, Jr and wife Marie of Ninety Six, SC; a special nephew, Jamie Gillian and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Gillian was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Manley and a brother, Calvin Gillian.

Graveside services  with Military Honors will be held 1:30 PM Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Lynn Ford.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Buffalo Fire Department, members of the S.C. National Guard Union Unit, members of the ASA Umpires, and members of the American Legion Post #87.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Helen Smith West, age 74, wife of John H. West, Jr., of 445 Bishop Rd., Union passed away, Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.

Mrs. West was born in Union, SC September 10, 1942 a daughter of the late Joseph Wilson Smith and Myrtle Greer Smith.  She was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College.  Mrs. West was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir. 

Surviving in addition to husband are one daughter, Caroline Burgess and husband Lane of West Union; one son, John Christopher West and wife Ashley of Seneca; one sister, Peggy Smith of Union; one brother, Rev. Joseph Wilson Smith and wife June of Union; six grandchildren, Bradley Burgess, Michael Burgess, Madison Burgess, Tyler Sanders, Karley West, and Ivey West; and one great-granddaughter, Genesis Sanders.  She was predeceased by one brother, Bobby Gene Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham.

Visitation will be held after the services in the Fellowship Hall.

Mr. George Alvin Gardin, Sr, age 66 of 443 Tinsley Rd., Pacolet, widower of Elizabeth “Libby” Gardin, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Gardin was born in Spartanburg, SC December 2, 1950, a son of the late James Richard Gardin and Annie Lee Birch Gardin. He retired from J.P. Stevens Plant in Jonesville and was a member of Jonesville Fire Department. Mr. Gardin was also a Mason.

Surviving are a daughter, Georgia Foster and husband Jeffery of Hinesville, GA; two sons: James Richard Gardin and wife Nicole of Jonesville and Rev. George Alvin Gardin, Jr and wife Staci of Kellyton, AL; three sisters: Karen Holt and husband Danny of Jonesville; Sandra Freeman of Union and Charlene Dimsdale of Jonesville; a brother, Charlie Gardin of Union; seven grandchildren: James Richard “Trey” Gardin, III, Jacob Foster, Madison Gardin, Stetson Gardin, Joshua Foster, Ayden Gardin and Alyssa Gardin. Mr. Gardin was predeceased by a sister, Judith Mitchell.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. George Gardin, Jr.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.

Members of the Jonesville Fire Department will serve as active pallbearers.
