James Lindsey Pressley

James Lindsey Pressley, age 79, husband of Juanita Davenport Pressley, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 30, 2014.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late James Henry and Alice Helen Allen Pressley. He was retired from Armstrong World Industrial after 30 years of service. Mr. Pressley was a member of Fountain Inn First Baptist Church and the Larry Wooten Sunday School Class. He had a God-given talent for music which he shared at church, nursing homes, and senior citizen gatherings. Mr. Pressley delivered Meals On Wheels for 15 years and volunteered at the Activity Center of Fountain Inn. He was a Mason and member of the Fountain Inn Lodge. He was a talented carpenter, was outgoing, and loved to have fun.

In addition to his loving wife of 58 years, Mr. Pressley is survived by a daughter, Thea Woodson (Eddie); two grandchildren, Chris Woodson (Ashley) of Union and Chad Woodson (Jennifer) of Dalton, GA; four great grandchildren, Calista, Avery, Kinsey, and Cooper Woodson; and a sister, Frances Babb (Leon) of Simpsonville. He was predeceased by a son, James Barron Pressley; a sister, Mary Helen Roach; a half-brother, B.L. Pressley; and two half-sisters, Beulah and Evie Gregg.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Cannon Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Cannon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Cannon Funeral Home prior to the funeral service.

The family will be at the home.

Ms. Kacie Jo Taylor, age 34, of 136 Lowe Rd., Cheraw, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at her home.

Ms. Taylor was born in Union, April 9, 1980, a daughter of Peggy McGowan Wallace and husband Tommy Wallace of the home and the late Warren “Cowboy” Taylor. Ms. Taylor was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her mother and step-father are a daughter, Mallory Outlaw of the home; her paternal grandmother, Helen Nix of Sylvania, Ga; her maternal grandfather, Francis McGowan of Union and several aunts and uncles.  Ms. Taylor was predeceased by a daughter, Lacy Taylor.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Lane Cemetery on Hawkins Rd., Union, conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Tuesday prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Faye H. Henderson

Mrs. Faye Haney Henderson, age 72, wife of Ken Henderson of 417 Pineneedle Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014.

Mrs. Henderson was born in Clyde, NC, December 6, 1941 a daughter of the late Walter and Madie Ghorley Haney. She was retired from Spartan Mills, Rosemont Plant in Jonesville. Mrs. Henderson was a member of Putman Baptist Church where she was a member of the Annie Kingsmore Sunday School Class and a former member of the choir.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Mark Henderson and wife Peggy of Buffalo and Jeff Henderson and wife Rose of Bull’s Gap TN; two sisters, Judy Petty of Buffalo and Nancy Solesbee of Thomson, GA; one brother, Ricky Haney of Buffalo; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and her best friend and caregivers, Elaine Sinclair, Patty Gault and Stacy Hood. Mrs. Henderson was predeceased by three brothers, Eugene Haney, Alfred Haney and Danny Ray Haney, and one sister, Carolyn Haney.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Monday, June 30, 2014 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rick Henderson and Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Petty, Allen Petty, Aaron Petty, Matthew Haney, Harold Wells and Rick Hood.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at Putman Baptist Church.

Jack Charles O’Dell 
Union, SC


Mr. Jack Charles Odell, age 86, husband of Louise Jeter Odell of 701 E. Main St., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, June 27, 2014.

Mr. Odell was born in Union Co., February22, 1928, a son of the late Fred H. Odell, Sr. and Lenora Dotson Odell. He was the last surviving member of eight children.

Mr. Odell was educated in the Union Co. schools and was founder and owner of Mid-Way BBQ.  He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church until his health declined.

Mr. Odell served in the US Navy during World War II as a fireman first class on board the submarine USS Odax, SS484 and has remained a loyal member of the American Legion Post 22 for over 60 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Jeannie Louise Odell of Union, and Amy Odell Allen and husband Jay also of Union; a son, John Charles Odell and wife Jacquelyn of Chapin; a niece, Ethel Jeter Sutton, reared in the home;  six grandchildren, Catherine Lazar Odell, John Mobley Odell, Rebecca Louise Hope and husband Robert, Jennifer Gray Knox and husband Joe, John Riley Gray and Abby Kate Allen; and five great-grandchildren, Joe, Addy, Julie, Kayton and Jack.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, June 30, 2014 at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Emory. 

Honorary pallbearers will be J.D. Bright, Don Fowler, John Riley Gray, Robert Sutton, Jack Odell, Rob Hope, Joe Knox, Kenneth Johnson and Calvin Nix.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses of Medi Home Hospice and to ALL of Mr. Odell’s caregivers for enabling them to continue his care at home during his extended illness in order to honor his wishes.

Ms. Nina Lisabeth “Beth” Bowie Ivey, age 42 of 81 Fellwood Drive, Rincon, GA., passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014.

Ms. Ivey was born in Union, SC August 5, 1971, a daughter of Alfred Bowie of Jonesville and the late Cynthia Ireland. She was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle of God. 

Surviving are two daughters: Stephanie Bagwell of Chesnee and Kayla Bagwell of Union; two sons: Justin Bowie of Spartanburg and Stephen Bagwell of Garden City, GA; a sister, Patricia Cook of Chesnee; three grandchildren: Edyn Caldwell, Lily Reynolds and Pierson Bagwell and a fiancée , Clifford Fitzpatrick of Rincon, GA.          

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, June 30, 2014  at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Rick Cook.

Visitation will be held 6:30-8:30 PM Sunday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Rev. James E. Sherbert

Rev. James Earl Sherbert, age 64, husband of Shelby J. Sherbert of 133 Hummingbird Lane, Union, passed away June 23, 2014 at his home.

Rev. Sherbert was born in Spartanburg Co., September 1, 1949, a son of the late Aaron and Eunice Sherbert Tucker.  He was retired as pastor of the Faith Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Tracie Fincher of the home and Candi Lancaster and husband Leon of Jonesville; a sister, Patti Lane of Enoree; three brothers, Aaron Tucker, Jr., Bobby Tucker and Ricky Tucker all of Woodruff; three granddaughters, Kelly Walton, Madison Chesnut and Macee Chesnut; and two great-grandsons, Triston Kirby and Adyn Kirby.  Rev. Sherbert was predeceased by a brother Mikey Tucker.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Full Gospel Tabernacle of God, conducted by Rev. Randy Smith, Rev. Lynn Ford, and Mr. Tim Cooper.

The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the services.

Mrs. Debra Ann Jones Wilson, age 53, wife of David Wilson, of Marina Del Rey, California passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Union, on October 29, 1960 a daughter of Mrs. Sallie Koon Jones of Union and the late Mr. William E. Jones.  She attended Indiana State University and was employed with Kinecta Federal Credit Union. 

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a daughter, Lauryn Wilson of the home; one sister, Donna Brooks and husband Brian of Indianapolis, IN; and one brother, Dennis Jones and wife Becky of Simpsonville, nieces Jennifer Brooks, Rachel Jones and a great-niece Alivia O’Neill; and two nephews, Nick Jones and Chris Brooks and wife Melissa.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Bauknight. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Marion Venson Poole

 Mr. Marion Venson Poole, age 87, husband of Grace James Poole, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014 at White Oaks Estate.

 Mr. Poole was born in Ware Shoals, SC October 26, 1926, a son of the late Thomas Newton Poole and Grace Davis Poole. He was a graduate of Clemson University and retired from Milliken & Co Excelsior Mill as plant engineer. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. Mr. Poole was first married to the late Zelia Fleming Poole.

 Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, William Michael Poole of Louisia, VA; two grandsons: Michael Townsend Poole of Union and Travis Lee Poole of Newberry; a sister, Merlin Jo Montgomery of New Mexico and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services with Military Honors will be held
11:00 AM Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Greenwood Memorial Gardens conducted by Pastor Emily Edenfield.

Mrs. Ethel Mae Cohen Jolly, age 89, of 806 South Pinckney St., widow of Loyd Stanley Jolly, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. Jolly was born in Bessemer City, NC, April 4, 1925, a daughter of the late William Paul Cohen and Ada Black Cohen. She became the owner of Excel Beauty Shop after working at Milliken Company- Excelsior Mill for 20 years. Mrs. Jolly was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter Linda Carlin and husband Dennis, and a grandson Brian Carlin all of Wellington FL.; a sister Louise Eller and husband, Rev. Harold Eller of Lancaster; two sisters-in-law Jackie Cohen of Spartanburg and Barbara Cohen of North Augusta; a special friend, Linda Bobo of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jolly was predeceased by two brothers Harry Cohen and Paul Cohen.

Funeral services will be held
12:00 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the S.R. Holcombe Chapel conducted by the Rev. Harold Eller. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

John Lynn Phillips

Mr. John Lynn Phillips, age 65 of 1307 Linersville Rd., Buffalo, passed away Friday, June 20, 2014 at Flat Drive, Buffalo.

Mr. Phillips was born in Union, SC June 26, 1948, a son of Arthur Lynn Phillips and Mary Cody Phillips of Union. He was a 1966 graduate of Union High School and received an Associate Degree from Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Phillips was owner and operator of Leonard’s of Buffalo and was a former co-owner of Phillips Hosiery Mill. He was a Veteran of the US Air Force having served in Vietnam.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a son, Jeffrey Phillips of Union; two sisters: Kay P. Smith of Columbia and Sally C. Phillips of Roswell, Ga.; a brother, Mac Phillips of Fletcher, NC; a long time partner, Arana Coleman of the home; two nieces: Hannah Kinney of Columbia and Sophia Phillips Rushing of Roswell, GA and two nephews: Riley Phillips Rushing of Roswell, GA and Alan Smith of Columbia. Mr. Phillips was predeceased by a nephew, Austin Phillips.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Sunset Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Roger Estes.

Visitation will be held in the Greater Union Church following the graveside service.

Mrs. Barbara Hines, age 72, of 237 Webber Lake Rd., Union, went to be with the Lord June 18, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House following a 3 month battle with lung cancer.

She was born on January 6, 1942, in Braxton County West Virginia, a daughter of the late Robert M. Simon and Dora E. Rexroad Simon. Mrs. Hines was a graduate of Glennville State College. She retired from the U.S. Forestry Services having devotedly worked there for many year and had previously worked at H&R Block and Belk’s Department Store.  Mrs. Hines was a devoted mother and grandmother and was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving are two sons, L. Joseph Hines and wife Susan of Inman, SC and Robert M. Hines and wife Angie of Union, SC; two grandchildren Lauren and Aiden Hines of Union; two sisters Betty Collins of Culpeper, Va and Sondra Qualey and husband Skip of Spartanburg, SC; two brothers, William “Bill” Simon and wife Lucille of Decatur, Alabama and Larry Simon and wife Gina of Jane Lew, WV; a special niece and nephew, Anita and Ralph Turnage; extended family members, Gene and Barbara Sprouse and son Vernon, Johnny and Judy Johnson and son Scott Johnson; Special friends, Tammy Vaughan, Margaret Willard, and Becky Moss; and twenty five nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
  She was predeceased by two brothers Oscar Simon of Bristol VA and Robert G. Simon of Grandy, NC and a nephew.

Keith F. Robinson 
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Keith F. Robinson, age 86, of 214 Long Ave., Jonesville, widower of Betty Foster Robinson, passed away, Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Robinson was born in Spartanburg, May 3, 1928, a son of the late Paul G. Robinson and Blanche Foster Robinson.  He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and a 1949 graduate of Wofford College.  Mr. Robinson retired in 1987 as a Vice President with S.C. National Bank, having begun his career in 1963. After retirement, he became a valued employee with the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.  Mr. Robinson served eighteen years with the S.C. National Guard   and also served on the Board of Commissioners for the Jonesville Fire District. He was a member of the Hejaz Shriners, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Rose Robinson of the home; a brother, Jimmy Robinson and wife Margie of Jonesville; a sister-in-law, Joann Cordell and husband Maurice of Union; and several nieces and nephews including, Crystal Bryant, Earl Queen, Doug Queen, Tami Fowler, Tina Cordell, Cheryl Kimbrell and Michael Foster.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, June 20, 2014 at Jonesville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey.

Mrs. Frances Christine Sprouse Johns, age 56, of 420 W. Main St., Pacolet, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Johns was born in Cowpens, July 8, 1957, a daughter of the late George Wilson Sprouse and Maebell Hill Sprouse. Mrs. Johns was of the Baptist faith and attended Morningstar Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Jennifer Williams and husband Jeff of Roebuck; two sons, Joshua Sprouse and wife Melissa of Pacolet and Justin Sprouse of the home; three sisters, Alma Parker, Betty Whitt and husband Louie, and Ruby Weathers and husband Bill all of Pacolet; three brothers, David Sprouse of Pacolet, Bobby Sprouse and Lawrence Sprouse of Roebuck; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Johns was predeceased by a brother, Paul Sprouse.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Clint Phillips. Burial will be at Hammett’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Monday at the chapel prior to the services.

Mr. Ned E. Howell, age 89, of 245 Ponderosa Dr., Union, widower of Wilma Fowler Howell, passed away, Friday, June 13, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Howell was born in Union Co., June 3, 1925, a son of the late Willie and Bridgie McCullough Howell.  He was a graduate of Kelly-Pinckney High School and retired from BASF Corporation. Mr. Howell was a devoted member of Mt Joy Baptist Church where his was a member of the Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two sons, Stanley Howell and wife Rita of Union and David Howell and wife Linda of Bonaire, GA; a sister, Sara Ann Farr of Jonesville; five brothers, William Howell of Union, Howard Howell of Spartanburg, Herman Howell of Charleston, Billy Howell of Laurens and Donald Hope Howell also of Union; five grandchildren, Crystal Almand, Angel Howell, Ginger Bowman, Jason Howell and Scott Howell and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Howell was predeceased by a sister and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, June 16, 2014 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West.  Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Ned Bell, Douglas Almand, Steve Howell, Tommy Howell, C.W. Garner and Larry Farr. 

Members of the Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of Mt. Joy are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Nancy Fisher Keisler, age 73, wife of Veldee Keisler of 102 Culbreath Heights, Union, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mrs. Keisler was born in Union, SC November 9, 1940, a daughter of the late Roy Fisher and Pearl Lawson Bolin and a step-father, Thomas Bolin. She was a graduate of Union High School and a member of Unity Methodist Church. Mr. & Mrs. Keisler was married for fifty-seven years and she was a military wife for twenty-eight years.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Teresa Cook and husband Ronnie, Beth Comer and husband Donald and Norma Davis and husband Frank all of Union; a sister, Kay Hopson of Spartanburg; a brother, Rev. Mickey Fisher and wife Marilyn of Greer; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Keisler was predeceased by three great-granddaughters, a sister, Melda Fisher and a brother, Jerry Fisher.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, June 14, 2014 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Mickey Fisher and Rev. Rick Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Ronald Keith Henderson, age 67, husband of Vickie Caldwell Henderson of 134 Old English Road, Union, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Henderson was born in Union, SC January 9, 1947, a son of the late George W. Henderson and Mary Ruth Littlejohn Henderson. He was a construction worker and was a member of the Union Church of Christ.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Rhonda Crocker; a son, Ronnie L. Henderson both of Union; four grandchildren: Casey Birchfield, Courtney Henderson, Christopher Crocker and wife Yajaira and Matthew Henderson and two brothers, Jerry Wayne Henderson of Union and Ricky Dale Henderson and wife Gail of Beaufort.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, June 13, 2014 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

 Mr. Glenn Walter Stein, age 75, husband of Wanda Jenkins Stein of 402 Mill Street, Lockhart, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mr. Stein was born in Camden, January 24, 1939, a son of the late Marvin Luther Stein and Helen Davis Stein. He retired from Plastic Reclaims and was previously employed with Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant. Mr. Stein was a member of Lockhart First Baptist Church where he and his wife were leaders of the Senior Saints. Mr. Stein was also a former church bus driver and was a member of the Adult II Sunday School Class. He also had served on the Lockhart Town Counsel.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Melanie Bagwell and husband Phil of Roebuck, and Gina Childers and husband Brian of Union; a son, Mark Stein and wife Jeri of Union; four sisters, Carol Scott, Linda Cato and Gail Carnes all of Kershaw, and Bootsie Britton and husband Reggie of Myrtle Beach; three brothers, Don Stein and Grady Stein and wife Melanie all of Florida, and Mike Stein and wife Becky of Heath Springs, SC; five grandchildren, Chelsea Bagwell and fiancée Wes Emery, Katelyn Bagwell, Austin Stein, Haley Stein and Brina Childers.  Mr. Stein was predeceased by a brother, Charles Stein.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Delos Blanton and Rev. Dr. Don McCutcheon. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dusty Cook, Kelly Callahan, Wes Jenkins, Jason Plemmons, Matt Cato, Jimmy Williams, Rusty Lucas, and Donnie Johnson.

Members of the Adult II Sunday School Class along with Mike Allen, John Richardson, Sammy Webber, Jerry McDonald and Ralph Edwards are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Tuesday evening at Lockhart First Baptist Church.

Mr. Ned Edsel Ivey age 88, of 734 Sugar Creek Rd., Buffalo, widower of Geraldine McBride Ivey, passed away Sunday June 1, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Ivey was born in Union, January 12, 1926, a son of the late Ben Clifford Ivey, Sr. and Anna Harris Ivey.  Mr. Ivey was a farmer and had also been involved in the building of Sugar Creek Racetrack.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry Ivey and wife Patricia and Mike Ivey and wife Paulette all of Buffalo; four sisters, Anna Lou Tipton and Rudelle Morris both of Union, Goldie Jordan of Florida and Barbara Summer of Greenville; and one brother, Ben Ivey Jr. and wife Jeanette of Union; seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Ivey was predeceased by one sister and four brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 6:00 PM Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the cemetery located on family property, 734 Sugar Creek Rd. Buffalo, conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton and Rev. Rick Henderson.

Active pallbearers will be Brad Lawson, Jason Ivey, Steve Freeman, Gene Revis, Stephen Howell and Josh Bevis.

The following are asked to form the honorary escort, Jim Rice, Wayne Palmer, Lewis Harrison, Jerry Burgess, Rolph Toney, Ralph Smith and Michael Smith.

Mr. Ivey will be carried to the home Tuesday where the family will receive friends.

Mrs. Gina Lynn Peay Osborne, age 53 passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Osborne was born in Union, October 17, 1960, a daughter of the late Harold and Geraldine Waldrop Peay.

She is survived by a daughter, Angel S. Smith and husband Lee of Jonesville; a son, Chris Pierce of Georgia; a brother, Tony Peay of Buffalo; and a grandson, Austin Smith.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services.

The family will be at their respective homes.
