Douglas S. Sheorn

Mr. Douglas Smith Sheorn, age 45, of Washington DC, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at the National Institutes of Health after a long illness from complications of a rare condition, Epstien-Barr, lymphoproliferative disorder.

Mr. Sheorn was born in Union, SC, April 29, 1961 a son of Margaret Smith "Tuttie" Sheorn of Union and the late Wiley "Buddy" Sheorn, Jr. He was a 1979 graduate of Union High School and 1984 graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Art degree in English. Since 1999, he had served as Executive Resources Manager for the Executive Office of the United States Attorneys at the Department of Justice. From 1997 to 1999, Doug was Director of Scheduling for Secretaries of Energy, Federico Pina and Bill Richardson. From 1993 to 1997, he worked in the White House in the Office of Presidential Personnel as the Director of Information Systems. Prior to his work in the Federal Government, Doug was the convention services coordinator, concierge, and newsletter editor at the Woodward and Lothrop’s flagship store in Washington, DC. He was Assistant Director and Acting Director of the Professional Services Center at the American Institute of Architects and served as a editor and writer at the Washington Service Bureau, International City Management Association, and the National League of Cities.

He was a supporter of many charitable organization including Food and Friends. In the 1980's, he served as a volunteer at the Whitman-Walker Clinic.

Surviving in addition to his mother, "Tuttie" Sheorn of Union, are a brother: Wiley "Trip" Sheorn, III and wife Betsy of Union; a sister: Susan Sheorn Patrylick and husband Jerry of Durham, NC; a nephew: Drew Sheorn and four nieces: Caroline Sheorn, Megan, Amy, and Taylor Patrylick; and a special friend: Bernie Delia of Washington, DC.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Byrd. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Washington, DC.

Samuel Edward "Sam" Moore, Sr.
Union, SC

Mr. Samuel Edward "Sam" Moore, Sr., age 77 of 276 Cambridge Drive, Union, SC, widower of Ruth H. Moore, died Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mr. Moore was born in Union, SC December 1, 1928, a son of the late Ernest Moore, Sr. And Lucille Williams Moore. He was a retired Veteran of the U.S. Navy with twenty-three years of service. He became EOD/UDT FROG MAN (SEAL) while serving in the Navy. He was a Veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict, Bay of Pigs and the Vietnam War. He graduated from many Naval Schools. Mr. Moore was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam War Veterans, American Legion, Woodman of the World, Union High Booster Club, Union Senior Citizen Club and worked with the Union County Stadium Football Staff. Following retirement from the U.S. Navy, Mr. Moore retired from Conso Products Company.

Survivors are: a daughter; Susan M. Pruitt and husband Stephen R. of Spartanburg, two sons; Francis Keith Moore and wife Jacqueline G. of Roebuck and John M. Moore and wife Terri of Union, a sister; Shirley Hensley and husband Wilburn of Landrum, eight grandchildren; Joanna Henderson, Matthew Pruitt and wife Jennifer, Jason Pruitt, Francine Kiara Moore, Makayla Moore, Melanie Harris and husband Hamlet, April Moore and Amber Moore, three great-grandchildren; Lauren Bannister, Holeigh Harris and Hamlet Harris, IV and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Moore was predeceased by a son; Samuel E. Moore, Jr. and two brothers; Ernest "Red" Moore and Bobby Moore.

Funeral services will be held 5:00 PM Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery with full Military Honors.

The following are asked to assemble at 4:45 PM at the chapel to form the Honorary Escort: Matthew Pruitt, Jason Pruitt, Shannon Ham, Eric Ham, Kenneth Smith and Billy Livingston. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post #22, Vietnam Veterans and friends from other special interest groups of Mr. Moore’s are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Leroy Dover, age 86, formerly of 503 Drugstore Street, Buffalo, SC died Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Dover was born in Union, SC June 13, 1919 the son of the late J.J. Dover and Florence Willard Dover. He retired from Standard Coffee Company and a was a member of the Church of Christ of Union. Mr. Dover was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. He was first married to the late Irene Gault Dover.

Survivors are: two daughters; Brenda Duncan and husband John of Buffalo and Ann Peigler and husband Ken of Union, a son; Gene Dover of Union, a sister; Vera Mae Black of Union, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Dover was predeceased by two sons, Ken Dover and Bud Dover.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the Church of Christ of Union conducted by Curtis Gilbert. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. James E. Graham, age 87, widower of Azalee Mull Graham of 921 Central Ave., Whitmire, died Tues. June 6, 2006 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Graham was born in Pomaria, SC, Nov. 21, 1918, a son of the late Ernest O. and Eunice Ringer Graham. He was retired from J.P. Stevens, Whimire Plant and was a veteran of the US Army having served in the European theater during WWII.. Mr. Graham was a member of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Pomaria.

Surviving are four sisters: Jessie Kitchens and Dorothy Tesieniar both of Whimire, Essie Richardson of Columbus, Miss., and Rebecca Parton of Charlotte, NC.; one brother: Bobby Graham of Nashville, TN; a special sister-in-law: Lois Scott. Mr. Graham was predeceased by two sisters: Susie Overton and Sadie Jones; three brothers: Carol Graham, Roland Graham and Beaman Graham.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, June 8, 2006 at Union Memorial Gardens by Rev. Jerry Lawson.

Mrs. Ida Belle Keasler Jackson, age 86, widow of Alonzo Shaird Jackson, Sr., formerly of the Ottaray Community, Union, died Wednesday June 7, 2006 at Oakmont Nursing Center.

Mrs. Jackson was born in Bullock’s Creek community of York Co., Nov. 25, 1919, a daughter of the late Andrew Eugene Keasler and Samantha Jane Trollinger Keasler. She was retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital and from the Union Co. School System. Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Union Church of God and a former Sunday School teacher at McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are one daughter: Brenda Berry of Union; four sons: Alonza S. Jackson, Jr of Union, Tommy R. Jackson and wife Mary of Taylors, Terry W. Jackson of Columbia and Mike Jackson and wife Sherry of Union; four sisters: Florence Adams of Jacksonville, FL, Kathaleen Mosley of Durham, NC, Josephine Smith of Union, and Billie Ann Howell of Chester; two brothers: J. Roy Keasler of Union and Bobby Keasler and wife Carol of Ft. Lawn, SC; 6 grandchildren: Jeff Berry and wife Libby, Paige Jackson, Tyler Jackson, Ashley Jackson, Brooke Jackson, Dayne Jackson; 5 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Jackson was predeceased by a son: Eugene Jackson; one brother: John Edgar Keasler and two grandchildren: Lisa Jackson and Kahil Jackson.

Mrs. Christine Eller Belue, age 85, widow of Jesse Fincher Belue, Sr., died Sat. June 10, 2006 at White Oak Manor in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Belue was born in Union, March 2, 1921, a daughter of the late J. Clarence and Inez Edwards Eller. She was retired from the S.C. Dept of Corrections and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son: Jesse Fincher Belue, Jr. of Columbia; one sister: Marie Eller of Rock Hill; one brother: Rev. Harold Eller of Lancaster; 6 grandchildren: Kendra B. Phillips of Pacolet, Crystal Gregory of Pacolet, Leah Lanier of Greer, Renee Hardy of Albertson, NC, Brian Belue of Columbia and Jessica Belue of Columbia; and 5 great grandchildren. Mrs. Belue was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Belue.

Connie Jeanelle Wilson

Mrs. Connie Jeanelle Wilson, age 67, wife of Albert H. Wilson of 118 Poinsett St., Union, died Sat. June 10, 2006, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Union, Jan. 24, 1939, a daughter of the late Roscoe and Annie Mae Linder Lawson. She was formerly employed with Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and with Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter: Connie Sinclair and fiancee’ Glenn Sparks of Union; two sons: Stanley Wilson and wife Ann of Union and Alan "Ermy" Wilson and wife Linda of Union; two sister: a twin, Bonnie Jeanette McCall and husband Tommy of Union and Margie Hawkins and husband Burl of Union; 5 grandchildren: Nikki Millwood, Christon "Fussy" Sinclair, Kyle Wilson, Andrew Wilson and Krissi Millwood. Mrs. Wilson was predeceased by a brother, Wilburn "Booter" Lawson and a great-grandchild, Brandon Millwood.

Ossie Cudd Whaley
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Ossie Cudd Whaley, age 96 widow of Ernest Derieux “E.D.” Whaley of 109 Merriman Ave., Union, died Sat. June 10, 2006 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Whaley was born in Greer, Jan. 8, 1910 a daughter of the late William Scove and Mary Alma Painter Cudd. She was educated in Union Co. schools and was the last surviving member of the Union High School class of 1927. She attended Roper School of Nursing and was active in genealogy and flower gardening. Mrs. Whaley was a member of the First Baptist Church for 70 years where she taught G.A.’s, Sunday School, Training Union and was a member of the W.M.U. Missionary Society. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Spartanburg Genealogical Society, along with several other organizations.

Mrs. Whaley researched, complied, and published the book, Cemeteries of Union County which is used as a reference book by genealogists and those researching their family ties. As a genealogist, she has helped numerous people trace their ancestors and helped them prepare the necessary paper work for entrance into the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by a daughter: Margaret Whaley McCarley and husband John of Union; a son: Ernest Derieux Whaley, II; five grandchildren: John David McCarley, Jr., Julia M. Bass, Kevin Whaley McCarley, E. Hamilton Whaley, A.Sean Whaley; five great-grandchildren: Thomas Cody McCarley, Abby McCarley, Shane Whaley, Caroline Whaley, and Lee Whaley.

Mrs. Whaley was predeceased by two sisters: Gaynelle C. Doty and Margaret Cudd.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, June12, 2006, at First Baptist Church by Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Campbell was born in Union, SC October 16, 1937, a son of the late Henry G. Campbell, I and Sallie Gregory Campbell. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union, a former member of the South Carolina National Guards-Union Unit, a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors are; a daughter: Tammy Walker and husband Scott of Franklin, Tn., a son: Henry G. Campbell, II and wife Lisa of Union, two sisters: Martha C. Bryan and husband Earl of Union and Sara Burns and husband Lancey of Toms River, NJ, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Keith was born in Graham County North Carolina April 4, 1928, a daughter of the late William Lorenzo Silvers and Ollie Crisp Silvers. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Keith is survived by her loving husband, Jefferson "Jack" Keith, a daughter: Brenda Frazier and husband Don of Union, a son: Michael Keith and wife Nancy of Jonesville, a brother: Carl Silvers and wife Anita of Georgia, nine grandchildren: Sherry Sizemore, Crystal Adams, Tammy Phillips, Dana Grady, David Grady, Chris Keith, Lisa Keith, John Keith and David Byrd and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Boughman was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania November 21, 1955 a daughter of Sue Happerfield Fisher Quinn of Buffalo and the late Ronald Fisher. Mrs. Boughman was a 1973 graduate of Union High and attended USC-Union. She was of the Baptist Faith and formerly employed with Walmart.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are: a brother; Frank Fisher and wife Tammy of Buffalo, her step-father, Jerry Quinn of Buffalo, five nieces; Maisie Fisher, Ashley Wilson, Brooke Wilson, Deidre Wilson, Heather Wilson and Alexis McGowan and one nephew, Matthew Fisher.

Patricia Ann Boulware Maness, 64, wife of James Woodrow Maness of 148 Timberlake Rad, Union, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at her home.

Mrs. Maness was born in Whitmire, April 3, 1942, a daughter of the late Howard Boulware and Mattie Belle Lee Boulware. She was a h o m e m a ke r and of the Baptist faith.

S u r v iv i n g in addition to her husband are two daughters, Renee Arthur and husband Dean of Spartanburg and Cindy Forrester and husband Scott of Boiling Springs; two sons, James W. "Jim" Maness, Jr. and wife Suzy of Union and Donald E. Maness of Cross Anchor, two sisters, Brenda Prince of Buffalo and Betty Jo Keisler of Union, a brother: Edward Boulware of Union; and several grandchildren.

Mr. George Wayne "Bones" Ponder, age 71, of 166 Camelot Drive, Union, SC died Friday, June 23, 2006 at his home. Mr. Ponder was the widower of Milagro C. Manibusan.

Mr. Ponder was born in Buffalo, SC May 22, 1935, the son of the late Sam A. Ponder, Sr. And Beatrice Woody Ponder. He was a graduate of Union High School, retired from the U.S. Navy having served in the Vietnam War and was owner and operator of Ponder’s Home Supply. Mr. Ponder was a former member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Mr. Ralph N. "Shorty" Arthur, age 84, of 1314 Main Street, Buffalo, SC , widower of Judy Eubanks Arthur, died Sunday, June 25, 2006 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Arthur was born in Union, SC January 7, 1922, a son of the late Voyd Arthur and Clara Harrison Arthur. He retired from Torrington & Company and the Union County Courthouse. He was a former supervisor with Union Mill. Mr. Arthur served in the United States Army. He was a member of Covenant Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher.

Mr. Arthur is survived by a special girlfriend: Rebecca Wade, a son: Rick Arthur and wife Jan of Jonesville, a daughter: Angela Seay and husband Donny of Buffalo, a sister: Ollie Mae Vinson and husband Jake of Union, three grandsons: Michael Anderson and wife LaWayne, Richie Anderson all of Buffalo and Zachary Arthur and wife Leighann of Santuc, seven great-grandchildren, three nephews and two nieces.

Mr. Harrison Moss, age 66, of 229 Pineland Rd., Union, SC died Sunday, June 25, 2006.

Mr. Moss was born in Union, SC June 2, 1940, a son of the late Rufus Moss and Myrtle Palmer Moss. He was employed as a residential painter with William Moss Painting. He was of the Methodist Faith.

Survivors are; one son: Larry Moss of Union, two step-sons: Wayne Roark of Pacolet and Gerald Roark of Union, a step-dauther: Melissa Patterson of Union, two sisters: Virginia Thompson and Lillie Grant both of Jonesville and a brother William Moss of Union. Mr. Moss was predeceased by a sister, Betty Sullivan.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Keith Sweat and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Edward H. McCoy
Union, SC

Mr. Edward H. McCoy, age 94, husband of Marion Spiller McCarty McCoy of 113 Fant Lane, Union, SC died Thursday, June 29, 2006 at his home.

Mr. McCoy was born in Lonsdale, RI, February 9, 1912 a son of the late John Fisher McCoy and Jessie Wright McCoy. Mr McCoy was a 1935 graduate of Brown University and a Veteran of the U.S. Navy having served as a navigator during World War II in the African and European Theaters. He retired as manager of Cone Mills-Carlisle Finishing after which he served as Interim Executive Director of the Union County Chamber of Commerce from 1979-1982 and then again from 1990-1991. Mr. McCoy was very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Union having served as a Sunday School teacher for many years and as a Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus. He was also very active in community and civic affairs, having served as Secretary of the Union Rotary Club for a number of years. Mr. McCoy was named a Paul Harris Fellow for his outstanding service to Rotary International. Additionally, he served as past President of the Industrial Management Club in Wilmington, DE, President of the Union Country Club, President of the Salvation Army and Vice-President of the Piedmont Interstate Fair in Spartanburg, SC. In 1981, he was awarded the distinguished Order of the Palmetto by then Governor Richard W. Riley.

Surviving in addition to his beloved wife of sixty years are; two daughters: Linda McCoy Lovett-Wittenstein and husband Joseph of Chicago, Il. and Spiller McCoy Gregory and husband Dr. Donald G. Gregory of Spartanburg, four grandchildren: Tammara Lovett-Katz and husband Matthew of Chicago, Il.., Adrienne Lovett of Reno, NV, Alison Gregory of Colorado Springs, CO and Jeremy Gregory of Mt. Pleasant, SC, two great-grandchildren: Maxwell Katz and Jacob Katz.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 2, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church, Union SC conducted by Rev. Robert Alexander and Dr. Walter Hickman. Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, July 3, 2006 in Rich Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Saltville, Va. conducted by Dr. Thomas Currie.

Mary Margaret Bailey Lawson

Mrs. Mary Margaret Bailey Lawson, age 79, widow of J.L. Lawson, Jr.of 167 Haney Cemetery Rd., Union, SC died Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restortative Care.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Kelton, SC October 25, 1926, a daughter of the late Sidney Bailey and Maggie Goings Bailey. She was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and Cecil’s Business School of Spartanburg. She retired from Milliken & Co-Pacolet Mills and Lockhart Plant. Mrs. Lawson was a member of Mt Joy Baptist Church where she served as organist for forty years and also served in numerous committees in the church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, grat-grandmother and a friend to all.

Survivors are; a daughter; Mary Ann Morrison and husband Rick of Spartanburg, a son; Sidney L. Lawson and wife Cynthia of Union, a sister; Cathleen E. Carroll of Union, two grandsons; John Morrison and finance Donna Marie Linse of Columbia and Michael Morrison and wife Debbie of Lyman, a great-grandson; Cody Morrison of Lyman, a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law Doris & James Lawson of Union and a number of nieces.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, July 2, 2006 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West and Rev. Bill Adams. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 2:00 PM to await the hour of service.

Active pallbearers will be John Morrison, Michael Morrison, William Jolly, Ray Finch, Keith Dye, Tony Farr, Wayne Hutcherson and Tim Gregory. Members of the Ruth Farr Sunday School Class and members of the choir of Mt. Joy Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group. Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Morrison, Oscar Saddler and J. D. Bright.

Beatrice Coleman Kirby

Mrs. Beatrice Coleman Kirby, age 84, widow of Fred Kirby, Sr., of 602 S. Pinckney Street, Union, SC died Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Greenville, SC May 24, 1922, a daughter of the late Silas Coleman and Annie Lindsey Coleman. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. Mrs. Kirby was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors are; two sons: Fred Kirby, Jr of Union and Larry Kirby of Pelzer, SC, two grandchildren: Robin Kirby and Sherri Kirby and two great-grandchildren Jordan Kirby and Aubrie Therrell.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, July 2, 2006 at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Randy Smith.

The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM Saturday evening at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
