Gladys Tucker Lawson

Mrs. Gladys Tucker Lawson, age 95 of 1125 Fields Rd., Pauline, widow of Lamar Lawson, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Landrum Hospice House.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Union, SC a daughter of the late Barry Tucker and Janie Sherbert Tucker. She was a graduate of West Springs High School and was retired from Conso Products and had formerly worked at Buffalo Mill and Pick and Pay Shoes.  Mrs. Lawson was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are four children, Margaret Mills of Moore, Laura Knox of Pauline, Raymond Lawson and wife Evetta of Pauline, and Janie Fowler and husband Buddy of Pauline and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Melvin Shelton.  The family will receive friends following the services at the cemetery.

Mrs. Betty Jean Bragg Howell, age 56, of 605 Toney Rd., Union, SC passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Howell was born in Aiken, SC., June 9, 1961 a daughter of Ruby Brunson Bragg and the late Paul Bragg. She was formerly employed with United Merchants Buffalo Plant and a member of Glory Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two sisters, Judy Wells of Jonesville and Linda Rumph of Union; nieces and nephews: Terri Trantham, Tommy O’Shields, Richie Wade, Brandy Rochester, Brian Wells, Jr., Kimalee Wells, Ricky Wade, Kinsleigh Wade, Dusty Trantham, Kyle Trantham, Matthew O’Shields, Davis Rochester, Casey Leith, Janie Beth   Trantham, Eli O’Shields, Thomas Trantham and Carter Trantham.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Glory Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Lee Franklin and Rev. Jonathan Shook. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

The following are asked to be Pallbearers: Tommy O’Shields, Jeff Trantham, Kyle Trantham, George Rumph, Brian Wells, Jr. and Richie Wade.

Visitation will be held 2:30 until 4:00 PM at Glory Baptist Church prior to the service.

Jacob Taylor Wade

Jacob Taylor Wade, age 23, of 1961 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Pauline, passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 at Union Medical Center.

Taylor was born October 1, 1993 in Union, a son of Eric Wade of Union and Youie Mopin of Ohio.  He was a graduate of Union County High School and attended Spartanburg Community College.  Taylor was employed with Cone Mill—Carlisle Finishing Plant and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Christina Davis of Los Angeles, CA and Jessica Wade of Toledo, OH; paternal grandparents, Vicki Nalls and Ronnie Wade and wife Gina all of Union; maternal grandparents, Lek and Bob Kellis; paternal great-grandmother, Margaret S. Wade of Union; an aunt, Khristy Wade of Union; an uncle, Chip Wade of Columbia, SC; his girlfriend, Ashley Moore of Buffalo; and numerous great aunts, great uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, July 31, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Dr. Tommy Vaughn.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Bonita Joan Medford Turner

Mrs. Bonita Joan Medford Turner, age 68, wife of William Turner of 102 Blue Bird Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Turner was born in Waynesville NC September 11, 1948, a daughter of the late Charles Medford and Ruth Seay Medford. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken & Co, Monarch Plant. Mrs. Turner was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church where she was a member of God’s Helpers Sunday School Class. She was a former member of the Union Quilt Club through the Clemson Extension.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sisters: Mary Ann Murphy and husband Robert of the Putman Community and Judith Elaine Scott and husband Kenny of the Monarch Community; two brothers: Wid Boone Medford and wife Marlene of Cuyahoga Falls, OH and Billy Medford and wife Barbara of Union and two grandchildren: Andrew Michael Turner of Buffalo and Kelsey Leigh Turner currently serving in the US Navy. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by her only son, David Michael Turner; a sister, Joyce Gail Gregory and two brothers: Darrell Thomas Medford and Charles Bryan Medford.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 30, 2017 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Smith and Rev. Robert Scott. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Mitchell Wayne Benton, age 55 of 123 Fant St., Union, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Benton was born in Cherokee Co., December 17, 1961 a son of the late Kenneth and Kathleen Painter Benton.  He was a former construction worker.

Surviving are two sons, Mitchell Benton of the home and Derrick Shaw Johnson and wife Casey  of Union; a brother Jerry Benton and wife Rhonda of Union; a sister, Tammy Petrie of NC; a grandson, Ethan Johnson and two nieces, Makyleigh Benton and Leigh Allison.

The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Kalee Elisabeth Selim

Kalee Elisabeth Selim, age 22, of 127 South St., Buffalo, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 at her home.

Kalee was born February 25, 1995 in Spartanburg, SC a daughter of Janie Bright and husband John and the late Kenneth A. Selim.  She was a graduate of Union County High School and was a manager at Jimmy’s Fresh Air Galaxy.

Surviving in addition to her mother and step-father are one two brothers, Troy Prosser and wife Marissa of Jonesville and Tristian Bright of Union; one nephew Carsyn Prosser; one aunt, Clarissa Barnett Taylor of Connecticut; one uncle, James Bright of Union; and cousins Christopher and Luke Barnett of Connecticut and Colby Bright of Union.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook.

Active pallbearers will be, Troy Prosser, Tristian Bright, Blake Northern, Jaikaia Anderson, Nathan Silvers, and Thomas Scarborough.

Visitation will be held 12:30 until 1:30 Sunday prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Sally Thomson Parker
Union, SC


Sally Thomson Parker passed away peacefully at home in Union, Monday July 17, 2017.  She was born August 26, 1927 in Arden, North Carolina, the daughter of John Herndon and Dorothy Harris Thomson.  She grew up in New Orleans attending her beloved Country Day School and then attending Newcomb College.  The family spent every summer in Union with family and friends.

She met James Munroe Parker on a blind date and they were married on June 12, 1948.  They moved to raise their family on the coast of Southern California.  The pilgrimage back to the south every summer continued, sometimes to New Orleans to see our dear cousins, and sometimes to Union to visit the Home Place and the farm.

Sally moved to Union permanently in 1995 and had wonderful life doing all of her favorite things: birdwatching, painting, singing, and making music with her friends at the Union Arts Council.

She loved and protected all of God’s creatures and took great comfort in her little dog Puck in the last year’s.

Sally is survived by her brother John and his wife Lucia, her five children that she loved dearly, Lucy and her husband Bob Prim, Sarah and her husband Ken, James, John, and Emma, three grandchildren Rob and James Prim, and Katherine Parker.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity conducted by Father Wayman Henry.

The family will have visitation after the services at the home on Herndon Terrace.

Willie Sue Taylor

Mrs. Willie Sue Bradley Taylor, age 83 of 506 Old Union Rd. (Lockhart Community), Union, SC passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Spartanburg Medical Center. Mrs. Taylor was the widow of Paul D. Taylor.

Mrs. Taylor was from Lockhart, SC, born June 26, 1934, a daughter of the late James R. Bradley and Peggy Ann Maxey Bradley. She was a member of Wilksburg Baptist Church in the Wilksburg Community of Chester County.

Surviving are a son, David Taylor and wife Julie of Gaffney; two grandchildren: April Rae Mabry and husband Chad and Cory Taylor; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Rae Mabry and a brother, George Bradley of Henrietta, NC. Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by a son, Alan Dean Taylor.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Lockhart Cemetery conducted by Rev. Sean Sellars and Rev. Jenny Gettys.

Visitation will be held at the home, 506 Old Union Rd., Union, 10:00-11:00 AM prior to the service and also following the service.

Douglas Austin

Mr. Douglas R. Austin, age 78 of 335 Meadow Woods Rd., Union, widower of Janice K. Austin, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center.

Mr. Austin was born October 23, 1938 in Union, SC a son of the late Nim Austin and Arzie Peahuff Austin.  He was a retired textile worker.

Surviving are one daughter, Sarah Rhinehart and husband Mark of Union; two sons, Clyde Austin and wife Malisa and Randy Eugene Austin and wife Stephanie all of Alabama; one sister Gladys Henderson of Union; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a special family friend, James Spencer of Union; and many nieces and nephews, including Kendall Austin and wife Amy of Union.  He was predeceased by four sisters, Beck, Sue, Minnie, and Evelyn and two brothers, Johnny and Fant.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, July 20, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Bob Catoe.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mary Ann French Greene, age 53, wife of Terry Greene of 3256 River Rd., Union, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Greene was born in Union, SC July 21, 1963, a daughter of the late Hoyt Earl “Tom” Fowler and Lois Manus Fowler. She was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Community College. Mrs. Greene was formerly employed with Conso Products and Spartanburg Housing Authority. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Lacey French Whitlock and husband Tyler of Union; a son, Lee French of Union; a step-daughter, Jackie Rector and husband Alan; a step-son Terry Greene and wife Brandy; a brother, Wayne Fowler and wife Wanda all of Union and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Greene was predeceased by two sisters: Brenda Farr and Betty Jo Gault and a brother, Jerry Dean Fowler.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Bubba Crawford, Scott Austin, Rocky Smith, Thomas Rochester, Ron Gault and John Gunter. Members of the Couples Sunday School Class are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Robert G. Sprouse, Jr.

Mr. Robert Gordon Sprouse, Jr., age 68, husband of Joan Vinson Sprouse of 311 Maple St., Union, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017.

Mr. Sprouse was born in Union, November 25, 1948, a son of Robert G. Sprouse, Sr. of Buffalo and the late Dorothy Thrift Sprouse.  He was a 1967 graduate of Union High School and graduated from the University of South Carolina, Union. Mr. Sprouse was retired as a quality engineer with Sagem in Greenville and was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Mr. Sprouse had served his church as a past Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Building Committee and had served as a Trustee.  He was a shriner and a life member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75.

Surviving in addition to his father and wife are three daughters, Amy Price and husband Jeff, and Rebecca Sweezy all of Union and Michelle Timms and husband Jamie of Simpsonville; two sons, Bob Sprouse and wife Lori of Buffalo and Chris Nance and wife Melissa of Union; two brothers, Terry Sprouse and Scott Sprouse both of Buffalo; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr. Sprouse was predeceased by a brother, Ricky Clyde Sprouse.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, July 14, 2017 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey, Rev. David Brown and Mr. Terry Mitchell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11:45 until 1:00 PM Friday at the church prior to the services.

Harold Ray Osment
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Harold Ray Osment, age 64 of 2640 Meansville Rd., Jonesville, passed away Monday, July 10, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Osment was born in Jonesville, SC January 5, 1953 a son of the late Harold Osment and Sarah Harmon Osment.  He was a 1971 graduate of Jonesville High School.  Mr. Osment was employed with Total Collision and had previously worked at Lee’s Body Shop.  He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Sarah Osment and Melissa Osment both of Jonesville; one granddaughter, Rachel Simoes of Jonesville; a special friend, Tutti Knight of Union; and one sister, Mary Knox and husband David of Jonesville.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Loree J. Robinson

Mrs. Loree James Robinson, age 104, formerly of Beltline Rd., Union, widow of Lewis R. “Diamond” Robinson, went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, July 9, 2017.

Mrs. Robinson was born in Union, May 9, 1913, a daughter of the late Wade Hampton James and Maggie Spillers James. She was a faithful member, as long as her health permitted, of the First Baptist Church, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. A fifteen-plus year resident of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, she was an inspiration to all who met her and loved to talk and laugh with everyone.  She participated in many activities of Ellen Sagar, including serving on the Board of Residence and singing in the choir.  Mrs. Robinson enjoyed doing crafts, dancing and visits from “Elvis”. She was a sweet, loving, Christian lady who was loved dearly by her family and many friends.

Surviving are two daughters; Patricia Ann R. Harmon of Union and Jeanette R. Johnson of Inman; two sisters, Hazel Black of Union and Jeanette McDaniel of Flint, MI; a granddaughter, LaShelle A. Limehouse of Goose Creek; two great-grandchildren, Patric C. Limehouse of Ladson and Britton L. Limehouse of Goose Creek; and two great-great-grandchildren; Cameron M. Limehouse and Anna M. Limehouse both of Ladson. Mrs. Robinson was predeceased by and infant son, Lewis R. Robinson, Jr.; two grandsons, Kenneth Wayne Johnson and Michael Robert Johnson; and seven brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Glen Ribelin.

The following are asked to serve honorary pallbearers, Christine Erskine, Carol Beheler, Becky Gault and Donna Atkinson.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Muriel Wade Mitchell

Mrs. Muriel Wade Mitchell, age 84, formerly of Hillcrest Dr., passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Heartland of Union Nursing Center.  Mrs. Mitchell was the widow of Bobby G. Mitchell.

Born in Union, April 24, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Linder and Gertrude Bryant Wade. She retired as a communication specialist with Anaconda in Lexington, SC where she and her husband had lived a number of years.  Mrs. Wade was a member of New Life Baptist Church where she was a member of the Young at Heart Sunday school class. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by her son, Bruce Anthony “Tony” Mitchell, and a number of brothers and sisters.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews including a niece Debra Baber Adams and her husband Talmadge of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, July 10, 2017 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Shannon Faulkner and Rev. Tim Driggers.  Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be the following nephews; Richard Brown, John Carter, Niel McKeown, Roger Wade, Tim Wade and Stanley Moody.

Richard G. Cocovich
Pacolet, S.C.


Mr. Richard G. Cocovich, 71, of Rockport Way Pacolet, SC died Monday, July 3, 2017 in Spartanburg Medical Center.

Rich was born on Oct. 28, 1945 in Iselin, Pa., the son of Mario R. Cocovich and Helen (Sobieray) Cocovich. He married Andrea Catania Cocovich on Sept. 2, 1967. They were residents of Indiana, Pa. for 31 years prior to relocating to Union Co., SC in 1998.

Rich graduated from Elders Ridge High School in 1963 where he was an exceptional athlete.  He excelled as a baseball player and was a team member of the West Lebanon and Creekside baseball teams. Rich was a coach for Delaney Chevrolet Little League Team and for the Indiana Senior Legion team.

He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirate and Pittsburgh Steeler fan.

Rich worked in the banking industry for 25 years and at Diamond Medical Supply in Indiana, Pa. for 10- years before retirement. He was a 25- year member of the Elks in Indiana, Pa.

Rich was an expert accordionist and was well-known in Pennsylvania for this talent and ability. He was proud to be a member of several polka bands and was a perfect fit with his light-hearted spirit and good-naturedness. Rich will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by Andrea, his beloved wife of 49 years, his son Richard M. Cocovich (Beth) of Hilton Head, SC, and daughter Michol Cocovich (Steve Anderson and Sasha and Erik Anderson) of Cranberry Twp., Pa., and his grandson and best friend Alessandro Cocovich. He is also survived by his father-in-law Charles C.Catania, sister-in-law Michol  Catania, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Charla and Paul Rots, nieces and nephew Debi (Joe) Nagy, goddaughter  Caren  (Rick) Falascino, Jennifer Demor, and Greg (Lori) Lezanic, several great nieces and nephews, one great-great nephew, goddaughter Lisa Burkett, and numerous cousins and  friends in many states.  Rich was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Darlene and Charles Lezanic, mother-in-law Jean Verona Catania, brother-in-law Charles S. Catania and nephew and godson PJ Rots.

The family will be holding private services.

Nancy Ruth Bright Parris

Mrs. Nancy Ruth Bright Parris, age 69, wife of James Larry Parris of 151 Pine Creek Dr., Spartanburg, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Parris was born May 16, 1948 in Spartanburg, SC a daughter of Lola Hill Bright and the late Leroy Bright.  She was a member of New Beginnings Church of Pacolet.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two daughters, Lori Wall and husband William of Spartanburg and Becky Gregg and husband Danny of Pacolet; two sons, Larry Parris and wife Donna of Pacolet and James Ray Parris and wife Kay of Pacolet; three sisters; one brother; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by one granddaughter, Nola LaBreeska Upton; one brother, Frank Bright; and one sister, Doris Stafford.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 8, 2017 at New Beginnings Church conducted by Pastor Lisa Parfitt.  Burial will follow at Hammett’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Jana Lawson Fleming, age 55, of 3752 Buffalo-West Spring Hwy., Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Fleming was born in Union, August 24, 1961 a daughter of Ronnie and Brenda Royster Lawson of the home. She was a 1979 graduate of Jonesville High School and was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Fleming was formerly employed in textiles and had previously worked at Pizza Hut in Union.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, James Fleming of Spartanburg; a daughter Kacie Lawson of the home; three sons, Chris Smith and wife Suzanne of Buffalo; Jesse Fleming of Cincinnati, OH and Jacob Fleming of the home; a sister, Judi Lancaster and husband Richie; her twin brother, Jeff Lawson of Jonesville; five grandchildren, Abbi Lawson, Charner Inabinet, Christian Lawson, Nathan Smith and Isabelle Smith; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Don Alexander and Rev. Bill Adams.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bogansville United Methodist Church, Sound System Fund, 4052 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, SC  29353.

The family will be at the home, 3752 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Jonesville.
