Mrs. Christine Maness Lambert, age 81, of 683 Rice Avenue Ext., Apt 1G, Union, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Lambert was the widow of William “Bill” Lambert.

Mrs. Lambert was born in Valley Falls, SC Augusgt 16, 1932, a daughter of the late Nat Maness and Glennie Justice Maness. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters: Deborah Burnett and husband James of Greenwood and Gigi Burgess and husband Mike of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Mitchell Horton of the home, Josh Horton of Greensboro, NC, Chris Burgess and wife Jennifer of Union, Ray Burgess and wife Kelly of Jonesville and Melissa Langley of Greenwood; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Fannie Bright of Union; two brothers: James Maness of Union and Charlie Bill Maness and wife Frances of Myrtle Beach; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Lila Price of Union. Mrs. Lambert was predeceased by a daughter, Kim Lambert; a grandson, Jim Burnett; a sister-in-law, Pat Maness and a brother-in-law, Albert Bright.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held 2:00-3:00 PM Sunday in the chapel prior to the service.

Janice O’Shields Ellis

Mrs. Janice Elaine O’Shields Ellis, age 69 of 705 Arthur Blvd, Union, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Ellis was born in Union, SC September 5, 1944, a daughter of the late Francis E. O’Shields and Juanita Humphries O’Shields. She was a graduate of Union High School and had attended Cecil Business College. Mrs. Ellis was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and was a member of BPOE Does. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two sons: Francis Leon Ellis of the home and Ronnie Ben Ellis of Union; two grandchildren: Summer Lee Ellis and Ronnie Tyler Ellis both of Union.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Aubrey Calvert and Rev. Larry Plyler. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Joey Littlejohn, Tommy Littlejohn, Jeff Littlejohn, Robbie Littlejohn, Mark Burns, Patrick Kelley, Mike Mitchell and Dale Mitchell. Mr. Bradley Edward Mayo, age 33, of 118 Kelly Rd., Union, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Mayo was born in Spartanburg, SC on January 17, 1981 a son of Eddie Mayo and Julie White Foster. He was a 1998 graduate of Union High School and a graduate of USC - Upstate where he earned a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. Mr. Mayo was previously employed as a Prevention Loss Officer with Wal-Mart in Spartanburg. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Jessica Foster of Union; a maternal grandmother, Shirley White of the home; a paternal grandmother, Clorice Mayo of Union; a niece, Savanna Grace Foster, of Union; three aunts Susan W. Randall, Marlene Sanders, and Lisa Leigh; two uncles Bruce Wayne White and Olin Dean White; several cousins, including, Connor Randall, Amber White, and Maggie White; and his beloved dog, Maddox. Mr. Mayo was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Olin Dewitt White and his paternal grandfather, Harold Edward Mayo, Sr.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 31, 2014 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb and Rev. Tommy Brown.

Willard W. “Snowball” Hucks, Jr.
Union, SC


Mr. Willard Wesley “Snowball” Hucks, Jr., age 60 of 610 Toney Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Huck was born in Union, SC on September 5, 1953 a son of the late Willard Wesley Hucks, Sr. and Ada Johnson Hucks Keisler. He was a graduate of Union High School.

Survivng are a daughter, Willa Hucks of Union; a son Trey Hucks and wife Jessica of Albany, OR; his long time companion Vickie Moss; three grandchildren, Blaine Therrell, Blair Therrell, and Christopher Crocker; a sister, Tanya “Lulu” Sanford; a brother Wayne Hucks; and two nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by one brother Tommy Hucks.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Robert Scott. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon Thursday prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Bobby Gerald “Hoover” Gregory, age 77, husband of Shirley Morris Gregory of 402 W. Hillcrest Avenue, Union, passed away Monday evening, January 27, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Gregory was born in Buffalo, SC January 7, 1937, a son of the late Franklin M. Gregory and Odessa Keisler Gregory. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from the City of Union Utilities Department. Mr. Gregory was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon; was a faithful member of the choir and had served on various committees.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Tony Gregory and wife Sue; a granddaughter, Ellen Gregory; a grandson, Matt Gregory all of Union and an “adopted” granddaughter, Michelle Weil and husband Daniel and their sons of Summerville.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, January 30, 2014 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Lynn Ford and Rev. Wayne Cook. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Alex Chalmers Childers, age 75, of 202 Lowry St., formerly of Lockhart, passed away January 27, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Childers was born in Lockhart, October 21, 1938, a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Childers and Mabel Jeanette Childers Childers.  He was retired from Milliken Co., and was a veteran of the US Army.

Mr. Childers is survived by his sister, Lillie Mae Childers Holmes of Chester; a friend Tommy McGowan of the home and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, James Frank Childers.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. James Michael McGowan.

Visitation will be held at the cemetery immediately following the service.

The family will be at their respective homes.

John Franklin “Frank” Cathcart

Mr. John Franklin “Frank” Cathcart, age 77, husband of Sarah Billings Cathcart of 229 Bennett Street, Union, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Cathcart was born in Union, SC August 18, 1936, a son of the late Herbert Cathcart and Marie Smith Cathcart. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Torrington River Plant. Mr. Cathcart was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. He was a Mason, Union Masonic Lodge #75; a Hejaz Shriner and a member of the Union Jaycees. Mr. Cathcart was also a member of the Buffalo Redman and had served as a Union City Volunteer Fireman.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Debbie Woodard and husband Bart of Union; a granddaughter, Casey Woodard of Union; two sisters: Sybil Ponder and Cora Snyder and husband Buddy and a brother, Carol Cathcart and wife Judy all of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton and Rev. Billy Cathcart. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Thomas Harold Garner, age 86, of 7390 South Pine St., Pacolet, widower of Elnora Clark Garner, passed away Saturday January 25, 2014 at Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Garner was born in Spartanburg, SC on February 5, 1927 a son of the late Earl and Mildred Foster Garner. He was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School. Mr. Garner was retired from Timken Plant– Gaffney as a Utility Operator and had previously worked with Pepsi Cola. He was a Veteran of the United States Army and was a member of Tate Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Garner had served as a Little League Coach in Pacolet and was a former Boy Scout Leader. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Surviving are two sons: Rick Garner and wife Joyce of Pacolet and Tom Garner of Prosperity; four sisters: Ann Peeler, Faye Pridmore, Jett Hughes all of Wilkinsville and June Black of New Ellenton ; a brother, Ralph Garner of Gaffney; two grandchildren: Taylor Garner and Lee Garner both of Pacolet; four great-grandchildren; Sherry Goodwin, whom he loved as a daughter of Spartanburg and Debra Cobb, a special friend and caregiver of Pacolet. Mr. Garner was predeceased by two sisters, Ruby Lowry and Thelma Brown; four brother, Boyd Garner, Ray Garner, Ledley Garner and Roy Garner.

Mrs. Nancy Brown Thomason, age 61, wife of Roger Dell Thomason, Sr., of 129 S. Main St, Lockhart, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Thomason was born in Lockhart, SC on January 5, 1953 a daughter of the late Maurice Dayton Brown and Doris Lee Warren Whitlock. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church. Mrs. Thomason was a beloved, wife, mother, sister, and Nana.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Michelle L. Cooper and husband Clint of Spartanburg; a son, Roger Thomason and wife Nichole of Waynesboro, GA; one brother, Nick Whitlock and wife Sandy of Summerville, SC; twelve grandchildren, Danielle Kelly, Brooke Kelly, Taylor Fisher, Kaitlin Thomason, Bailie Thomason, Samantha Thomason, Jada Thomason, Trevor Robinson, Jacob Thomason, Zoe Cooper, Maddy Cooper, and Bella Thomason; five great-grandchildren; one nephew, Wyatt Whitlock; two aunts, Betty Pharr and husband Harold of Conway and Carol Mitchell of Union.

Donald Mansel “Mink” Gowan

Mr. Donald Mansel “Mink” Gowan, age 83, husband of Frances Lawson Gowan, of 1124 Gowan Rd, Pauline, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Gowan was born in West Springs on February 8, 1930, a son of the late Johnny and Colene Hyatt Gowan. He was a 1949 graduate of West Springs High School. Mr. Gowan was a retired fence contractor. He was member of West Springs Baptist Church, where he was currently serving chairman of the cemetery committee and was a member of the choir as long as his health permitted.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Rushie Sorrenti and husband Larry of Salem, SC and Kaye Belue and husband Dwight of Jonesville; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Gowan was predeceased by an infant son, Rodney Mansel Gowan and one sister, Elaine Lancaster.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 26, 2014 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Greg Black and the Rev. Dr. Henry Johnson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tyler Petty, Ken Lancaster, Charles Bennett, Mike Gault, Ed Heatherly, and Darrell Kendrick. The Men of West Springs Baptist Church are asked to form the honorary escort.

Mr. James William Vaughn, age 83, husband of Louise Spencer Vaughn of 414 Vaughn Rd., Union, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Vaughn was born in Union, November 9, 1930, a son of the late Paul Vaughn and Mamie Gault Vaughn Boughman. He was retired from Milliken Co., Gillespie Plant and was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean War. Mr. Vaughn was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Club of the church. Mr. Vaughn also was a mason.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years are two daughters, Doris Patterson (Doug) of Spartanburg and Debra Turner (Brian Peake) of Lugoff; three sisters, Lollie Craig (Louis), Donna Harris (Grady) and Virginia Beers all of Spartanburg; two brothers, Harold Vaughn of Jonesville and Paul “Cook” Vaughn of Union; four grandchildren: Dustin Kendrick (Hope), Matthew Turner (Renee Muringer), Heidi Kennedy(Seann) and Nick Patterson; four great-grandchildren, Jayda Kendrick, Kayla Kendrick, Savannah Bagwell and A.J. Bagwell. Mr. Vaughn was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

Mr. George Franklin Silvers, Jr., age 72, husband of Linda Gusz Silvers of 3898 Cross Keys, Hwy., Union, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Silvers was born in Union, February 4, 1941, a son of the late George Franklin Sr., and Mary Cope Silvers.  He as a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken and Co., and was employed by Woodruff Housing Authority.  Mr. Silvers was a veteran of the US Air Force, a Mason, and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Terie S. Lawson and husband Billy, Jennifer S. Durham and husband Jerry; one son, Randy K. Silvers all of Union; three sisters, Barbara Pridemore and Vicki Grady both of Union and Mechelle McLeod of Greenville; a brother, Gary Silvers of Union;  five grandsons, Justin Silvers, Nathan Silvers, Brennen Canupp, Zackary Durham, and Garrett Durham; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mr. Silvers was predeceased by a brother Kenneth Silvers.

Funeral services with Military Honors will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday prior to the services in the chapel.

Mrs. Odell Means Ruth, 91, formerly of 709 Arthur Blvd, Union, widow of Thomas Ruth, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Ruth was born on June 7, 1922, a daughter of the late John Smith and the late Jennie Lee Poole Smith. She was formerly employed with the New York School of Education as a School Aid. Mrs. Ruth was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Laura Good Smith of Brooklyn, New York and Betty Means McQuiller and husband Joe of Christianburg, Virginia; 20 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren, and 3 great-great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son, Morris Gallman and three daughters, Ruby Samuels, Essie Means and Elizabeth Means.

Funeral services will held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 904 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, SC conducted by Rev. James E. Tillotson. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Ruby Irene Wix Helms, age 81, wife of Harry O. Helms of 2029 Jonesville Hwy, Union, SC passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Helms was born in Union, SC June 25, 1932, a daughter of the late Wallace Benjamin Wix and Viola Whitlock Wix. She retired from Cone Mill after thirty nine years of service. Mrs. Helms was a member of Fosters Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of Carlisle Hart Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Linda H. Mitchell and husband Terry and Carolyn H. Belue and husband Neil all of Union; a son, Kenneth L. Helms and wife Emily of Greenville; a granddaughter, Stephanie Russell and husband Stephen; two grandsons: Josh Belue and wife Crystal and Allen Mitchell and wife Kristin and three great grandsons: Corey Garner, Michael Russell and Luke Belue all of Union. Mrs. Helms was predeceased by a granddaughter, Leah Mitchell; a sister, Maybelle Wix and four brothers, “Booster” Wix, Robert Wix, Dewey Lee Wix and George Wix.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, January 24, 2014 at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Glenn Ribelin. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Alberry Sullivan Fleming, Sr., age 66, husband of Gloria Hall Fleming of 208 Tinsley Rd., Pacolet, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Fleming was born in Spartanburg, November 1, 1947, a son of the late Ernest Owens and Kathryn Fleming Godfrey. He was a retired business man and owner and operator of Pacolet Gun and Pawn. Mr. Fleming was active in his community, an avid hunter and a supporter of Autism Speaks. He attended Brown’s Chapel Baptist Church in Pacolet Mills.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Tammy Burnett of Spartanburg and Mitzi Turner and husband Gerald of Pauline; one son, Alberry Sullivan Fleming, Jr. “Corky” and wife Amanda of Pacolet; a sister, Bonita O. Mrs. Ruth Robinson Gossett, age 96, of 727 Vernon Foster Rd, Union, widow of Charles W. Gossett, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Gossett was born in Cherokee Co., on May 20, 1917 a daughter of the late Aubry R. and Bessie Blanton Robinson. She retired from Conso Products. Mrs. Gossett was a faithful member of New Hope United Methodist Church for over 70 years. As long as her health permitted she was a member of the United Methodist Women and was a member of the Women’s Sunday School Class of New Hope United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Frost and husband Lewis of Union; three sons, Jimmy Gossett and wife Conny of Gaffney, Henry Gossett and wife Mary Helen of Union, and Kenneth Gossett and wife Mary Ruth of Jonesville; one brother, Ray Robinson and wife Catherine of Pacolet; five grandchildren, Angie Foster, Heather Sparks and husband Bruce, Nicole Gregory and husband Nick, Jason Gossett and wife Tiffany, and Terry Martin; eleven great-grandchildren, Taylor and Kyle Foster; Evan, Madelyn, and Joseph Sparks; J.T., Grayson, Josiah Gossett; MaKayla, Gavin, and Hailey Gregory; and a number of nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by three brothers, William, Leonard, and Arthur Robinson; two sisters, Annie Wix and Marie Robinson; and one grandson, Christopher Gossett.

Ms. Betty Dawkins Black, age 82, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Ms. Black was born December 14, 1931 a daughter of the late George B. Dawkins, Sr. and Mamie Miller Dawkins. She retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital after 27 years as a Nurses Aid. Ms. Black was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Black Robinson of the home; a sister, Judith D. Green of Union; a brother, Oscar S. Dawkins, of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, James Ross “Jimmie” Black, Sr.; two sisters Louise Quarterman and Hazel D. Cape; four brothers, William Dawkins, George B. Dawkins, Jr., Robert E. Dawkins, and Miller Dawkins.

Funeral Services will be held 12:00 Noon Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan Gregory and Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Adams was born in Union, SC January 2, 1950, a son of the late Arthur M. “Buck” Adams and Mary Fincher Adams. He was a 1968 graduate of Union High School and retired from Union Oil Mill. Mr. Adams attended Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Dottie Adams Bevis of Union; a sister, Janie Adams Jones and husband Robert of Cherryville, NC; a brother, Buddy Adams and wife Susan of Covington, GA; two grandchildren: Tristen Brock and Rydder Bevis both of Union.

Mrs. Berry was born January 6, 1921, a daughter of the late Barksdale A. Tucker and Lillian Shirley Tucker. She was formerly employed in Textiles and was a homemaker. Mrs. Berry was a faithful member of Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Carrie Davis and husband Steve, Carolyn Stepp and husband Roger and Shirley Berry; a son, Gene Berry and wife Susie; a sister, Frances T. Addison all of Union; three half-sisters: Janice Tucker of Chesterfield, Tammy Tucker of Rockingham, NC and Belinda Tucker of Monroe, NC; nine grandchildren: Crystal B. Earls and husband Jackie, David E. Berry and wife Melanie, Amy M. Stepp and husband Mike, Stephen D. Berry, J. Brian Berry and wife Crystal, S. Lance Davis and wife Amy, S. Lee Davis and wife Kacie, Buffy McKeown and husband Jimmy and Michelle Betenbaugh; nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Berry was predeceased by a sister, Marie T. Kyzer; a grandaughter, Stephanie Davis; a great-grandson and three step-brothers, Jimmy Tucker, Junior Tucker and William Tucker.

Mr. Childers was born in Union, SC May 18, 1961, a son of the late Harvey Lee Childers and Rebecca Jane Porter Childers. He was employed with Gestamp South Carolina and was a member of Lockhart First Baptist Church. Mr. Childers was a very dedicated member of the Lockhart Fire Department.

Mr. Fowler was born April 12, 1949, a son of the late Hoyt Earl Fowler and Lois Edith Maness Fowler. He was formerly employed with H&H Metal. Mr. Fowler was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class and a member of the Brotherhood.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Deana Fowler; a son, Chris Fowler and wife Sharon; a step-daughter, Angela Sanders and husband Shannon all of Union; a step-son, David Greene of the home; a sister, Mary Ann French; a brother, Wayne Fowler and wife Wanda all of Union and seven grandchildren. Mr. Fowler was predeceased by two sisters, Brenda Farr and Betty Joe Gault.

Mr. Glenn Everett Crisp, age 77, husband of Bonnie Gregory Crisp of 2717 Lockhart Hwy., Union, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

Mr. Crisp was born in Buffalo, September 17, 1936, a son of the late Jessie and Bessie Smith Crisp. He retired from the City of Union, Public Safety Dept. and was previously a deputy with the Union Co. Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Crisp was currently owner and operator of the Country Store on Lockhart Hwy. He was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and was also a veteran of the US Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Debbie Boyle and husband Stanley of Union; two sons, Mickey Crisp of Chesnee and Thomas Crisp of Philadelphia, PA; a brother, J.W. Crisp of Buffalo; five grandchildren, Melissa Smith Sanders, Matthew Crisp, Tracy Bond, Lindsay Crisp and Montgomery Crisp; and five great-grandchildren, Meghan Garcia, Calab Branch, Jaden Branch, Reanna Branch and Katelynn Riddle.

Mrs. Carolyn Jean Bright, age 77, of 304 Briarwood Dr., Pacolet, went home to be with the Lord, January 15, 2014.

Mrs. Bright was born in Fountain Inn, March 14, 1936, a daughter of the late Virgil and Vittie Knight Fowler. She was a member of Pacolet First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Quinn and husband Jerry, and Joan Wilkins and husband Bobby all of Pacolet; one son, Roy Bright of the home; two sisters, Shirley Brown of FL and Ina Smiley of Gaffney; 16 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren. Mrs Bright was predeceased by a daughter, Darlene Fowler and two sisters, Evelyn Parks and Vivian Watson.

Mrs. Barnett was born n Union, July 20, 1917, a daughter of the late David C. Gist and Claudia Wylie Gist. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was a lifetime member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Kay Barnett Dukes and husband Bill of Greenwood, Ruth Ann Barnett Adams of Union, and Robin Barnett Stalnaker and husband Joe also of Greenwood; a sister, Mary Voiselle of Union; two brothers, Robert “Bob” Gist and wife Helen of Union and John D. Gist and wife Ginny of Silver Spring, MD; seven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Barnett was predeceased by a son, David Barnett, a sister, Willie Neal Vinson, and a brother, James Gist.

Mrs. Hazel Roberta Vinson, age 71, wife of Robert Vinson of 125 Pineland Avenue, Union, took her heavenly flight Sunday morning January 12, 2014 following an extended illness.

Mrs. Vinson was born December 6, 1942, a daughter of the late Robert L. Foster and Hazel Goforth Foster. She was a 1961 graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from Nestle. Mrs. Vinson was a member of New Life Baptist Church where she was a member of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class and the adult choir.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Rhonda Tuttle and husband Scott of Sedalia, MO, Kristi Vinson of the home and Heather Black of Union; two sons: Robbie Vinson and wife Missy and Kevin Vinson and wife Anitra all of Union; nine grandchildren: Andrea Black, Jada Tuttle, Caleb Tuttle, Joshua Tuttle, Emily Vinson, Ryan Vinson, Brooklyn Stevens, Alyssa Vinson and Bethany Vinson; two “special granddaughters”, Sara and Elizabeth Freeman; a sister, Sandra Thompson of Union; a brother, Robert “Bob” Foster, Jr and wife Carol of Lexington and a special friend, Kay Miller. She was predeceased by a sister, Gayle Vinson. Mrs. Vinson’s life long generosity followed in death as she donated her body to medical research.

Mr. Thomas Sylvester “Red” Hancock, age 70, husband of Peggy Roberson Hancock of 112 Homestead Dr., Union, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Hancock was born in Union, September 11, 1943, a son of the late Dudley Lee Hancock and Willie Mae Mize Hancock. Mr. Hancock was a retired textiles worker and a veteran of the US. Army having served in the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Hancock was of the Baptist faith and the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife 35 years is a daughter, Janet Louise Hancock of Inman; two step-sons, James Littlejohn of Jonesville and Kent Littlejohn of Cross Keys; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Smith Hancock; a niece, Debbie Hancock Crawford and husband Donnie all of Union; two brothers-in-law, Claude Roberson and wife Barbara of Jonesville and Jimmy Roberson and wife Darlene of Pacolet; two grandchildren; two god children, Chloe Sanford and Carter Hackler both of Union; special friends, Dean and Mary Lancaster of Jonesville. He is also survived by a host of friends with the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit. Mr. Hancock was predeceased by a sister, Alta Ruth Hancock and a brother, Charles Vernon Hancock.

Mr. Franklin D. Wright, age 81, of 2950 Hwy 39 Mountville, widower of Joan Woodward Wright, passed away Monday, January 13, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Wright was born in Greenville, on November 6, 1932 a son of the late Nathan and Nellie Hood Wright. He was first married to the late Catherine Lawson Wright. Mr. Wright was a graduate of Cross Keys High School and was retired from W.R. Grace Company. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War.

Surviving are three sons, Gerald Wright of Enoree, Roger Wright and wife Sharon of Mountville and Marvin Hayes of North Carolina; a brother Arthur Wright of Enoree; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Wright was predeceased by twin sons, Ronald and Donald Wright, one sister and four brothers.

Mr. Wright was born in Cherokee Co., June 13, 1942 a son of the late John Claude Wright and Millie Peeler Wright. He was retired from Limestone Mills in Gaffney.

Surviving are a daughter, Rhonda W. Reynolds and husband Alan with whom he made his home; four grandchildren, Jessica Wright, Jeffrey Wright, Candice Wright and Greg Anthony; one great-granddaughter, Delaney Price, seven sisters and one brother. Mr. Wright was predeceased by a daughter, Angela Marie Wright, two sons, Jeffrey O’Neal Wright and Benny Raymond Wright, Jr., and five brothers.

Mrs. Buchanan was born in Union, June 8, 1973, a daughter of the late Homer L. and Joyce Puckett West.  She was a graduate of Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Buchanan was previously employed with Conso Products and Wal-Mart of Union.

Surviving are her husband George Paul Buchanan of Union; two sisters, Barbara W. Wolfe and husband Paul of Pauline and Donna W. Mr. Tim “Bud” Harris, age 51 of 3732 Cowpens-Pacolet Hwy., Pacolet, passed away Friday January 10, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born in Spartanburg, January 1, 1962, he was a son of the late Archie Buddy Harris and Mamie Louise Whiting Harris.

He is survived by a sister, Corrie Ann Sprouse; a brother, Richard Kent Harris, two nephews, Daniel Sprouse and Rodney Harris; three nieces, Anna Sprouse, Amanda Skates and Margo Harris; and 12 great nieces and nephews. Tim leaves us all with memories that we will always cherish. We all love and will miss him very much.

Mrs. Valentine was born March 15, 1926, a daughter of the late William Judson Lancaster and Hattie West Lancaster. She was a graduate of West Springs High School. Mrs. Valentine was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Williams and husband Robert of Simpsonville; two sons: Neil Valentine and wife Jane of Union and Lanny Valentine and wife Cathie of Granitevlle, SC; six grandchildren: Brad Valentine and wife Brooke, Kelly Lawson and husband Lynn, Andy Williams and wife Lisa, Kristin Seaver and husband Mike, Judson Valentine and wife Nikki and Jeana Carter and husband Delton; thirteen great-grandchildren and a special sister-in-law, Lottie Lancster. Mrs. Valentine was predeceased by four sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Don Alexander, Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Mike Seaver. Burial will be in Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Gary Hawkins, Ronnie Lawson, Billy Lawson, Tim West, Randy Harvey, Jeff Lawson, Steve Morrow and Kevin Morrow. The following are asked to sit in a group: Rev. Alan West, Rev. Bob Branch, Pearl Crocker, the Mary Sue Keith Sunday School Class, the employee’s of Medi Home Hospice and the staff of Heartland Health Care.

Visitation will be held 1:45-2:45 PM Sunday in the church prior to the service.

Mrs. Vivian Hyder Jolly, age 83 of 1526 Whitmire Hwy, Union, widow of Paul Edgar Jolly, Sr., passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Jolly was born in Union, SC September 12, 1930, a daughter of the late Wilkes Edward Hyder, Sr and Lillian Greene Hyder. She was a graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Jolly was a homemaker and was previously employed with Her Majesty. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Janet Jolly Brown and husband Dean of Newberry and Jerri Jolly Thompson and husband Keith of Boiling Springs; a son, Paul Edgar “Eddie” Jolly, Jr and wife Jill of Cherokee Springs; five grandchildren: Andrea Davis and husband Corey of Union, Lori Elder and husband Jeff of Newberry, Blake Thompson of Boiling Springs, Sally Margaret Jolly and Collin Jolly both of Cherokee Springs; four great-grandchildren: Chase Cole Davis, Bailey Davis, Abigail Elder and Macy Elder; two sisters: Cornelia Owings of Union and Lorena Gregory of Spartanburg; a brother, Curtis Maurice Hyder of Union; a number of nieces and nephews and a special caregiver, Paula Faulkner of Union. Mrs. Jolly was predeceased by three sisters, six brothers and a great-grandson, Hayden Ray Elder.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 10, 2014 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Shannon Faulkner and Rev. Ron Culbertson. Burial will be in Hebron Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. David Ross Lovings, age 53, husband of Kyong Song Lovings of 4506 Southwest Malcom Rd., Lawton, OK, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Comanche County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Lovings was born in Union, SC September 7, 1960, a son of the late William E. Lovings and Estelle Parham Lovings. He was a gradute of Union High School and  retired from the US Army after twenty three years of service. Mr. Lovings also retired from the Battelle Industries.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Emily Lovings of Lawton, OK and Michelle Rodriguez and husband Alex of Germany; a son, Mark Rabah of Lawton, OK; four grandchildren: Amaya Rodriguez, Kayla Rodriguez, Aaliyah Rodriguez and Vincent Rabah; three sisters: Ann Hall of IL, Brenda Lovings Stone of Union and Gwen Lovings of Henderson, KY and a brother, William Lovings of Panama City, FL. Mr. Lovings was predeceased by three brothers, Roger Lovings, Bruce Lovings and Ken Lovings.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, January 10, 2014 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 PM Thursday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rose Robertson, age 97 formerly of 635 Berry Farm Rd., Union, widow of George L. Robertson, Sr, passed away Monday, January 6, 2014 at White Oak Manor , Newberry, SC.

Mrs. Robertson was born in Spindale, NC May 25, 1916. She was a homemaker and family farmer. Mrs. Robertson was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, George L. Robertson, Jr. and wife Debra of Union; three grandchildren: Levi Robertson and wife Angela of Spartanburg and their children, Laci and Addison Robertson, Jessica Allison of Union and her daughter, Jamison Alexander and Randee Robertson of Columbia and her son, CJ Keisler of Union. Mrs. Robertson was the last surviving child of eleven children.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Childers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Wednesday in the church prior to the service.

Mr. Donald Fred Harris, Sr., age 75, husband of Marie Ramey Harris of 239 Harris Lake Rd., Union passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Regional Hospice House in Spartanburg.

Mr. Harris was born December 27, 1938, a son of Anna Gault Harris of Union and the late William Fredrick “Fred” Harris. He was of the methodist faith and a retired farmer and carpenter, having worked with Jack Earls Construction Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons: Donald Fred “Freddie” Harris and wife Wendy of Buffalo and Brandon Harris of the home; a grandson reared in the home: Payton Harris; a daughter: Ann Sanders of Woodruff; a sister: Barbara H. Gregory and husband Gene of Union; two brothers: Henry Grady Harris and wife Donna of Spartanburg and James Stanley Harris and special friend Cindy Henderson of Union; two step-daughters: Yevette Yarborough and husband Scott and Tracy Wallace and husband Jeff all of Chester; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Harris was predeceased by a son: Alvin Harris.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Glenn Ribelin and Rev. Carl Harris. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Dorothy Nell Hanna Rice, age 86, of 1308 Parker Rd., Enoree, SC.,  widow of Donald Humphries Rice passed away Friday, January 3, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Rice was born March 8, 1927, a daughter of the late Paul Heath Hanna and Alpha Lanford Hanna. She was a graduate of Woodruff High School and Lander University. Mrs. Rice was a member of Enoree United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are three daughters: Debbie Rice Harrison of Woodruff, Dianne Rice Hurt of Greenville and Darlene Annette Rice of Summerville; two sons: Donald Paul Rice and wife Marcy of Enoree and David Kenneth Rice of Woodruff; a brother: Niles Edwin Hanna, Sr. and  wife Ann of Enoree; six grandchildren: Robert Harrison, Holly Harrison Knight, Adam Harrison, Megan Hurt, Bradon Hurt and Forrest Ryan; two great-grand children.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Enoree United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Kevin Bishop and Rev. Bill Bynum. Burial will follow at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens in Woodruff, SC.

Mr. John Ray Petty, age 87, husband of Vera Cook Petty of 1011 East Main Street, Pacolet, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Petty was born in Union,  May 5, 1926, a son of the late Charlie L. Petty and Ada Brown Petty. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and was a textile worker. Mr. Petty was a veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II and was a member of Pacolet United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-six years are two daughters: Ann P. Upton and husband Paul and Tammy P. Thompson and husband Rick; a son, Lantis Petty all of Pacolet; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and special friends, Jimmy and Helen Cochran, Becky Pruitt and Bruce and June Pace all of Pacolet. Mr. Petty was predeceased by two sisters, Evie Allison and Sarah Johnson and two brothers, Walter Petty and Fred Petty.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Tate Memorial Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dennis Tessnier and Chaplain David Boyter. Burial will be in Pacolet United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

Hayes Fant Vaughan

Mr. Hayes Fant Vaughan, age 82, husband of Lois Howell Vaughan of 129 South 1st Street, Lockhart, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Vaughan was born April 23, 1931, a son of the late Robert “Doot” Fant and Loma Watts Vaughan. He was retired from Milliken & Co- Gilespie Plant and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church. Mr. Vaughan was a fireman with Lockhart Fire Department for over fifty years and had served as the assistant chief and also as a board member. He had served as a coach for the Little League, the Pony League and the Amercian Legion ball teams.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Gloria Cabaniss and husband Jackie of GA, Renee Ruggles and husband Ronnie of Greer and Beth Cromer of Union; a son, Ray Vaughan and wife Cheryl of Chapin; a brother, Harold Vaughan of Buffalo; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a grand dog, Lulu. Mr. Vaughan was predeceased by by a grandson, Josh Pritchett; a sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tony Cbaniss, Brad Latham, Matthew Latham, Daniel Vaughan, Tommy Cabaniss and Jeff Roberts. Members of the Lockhart Fire Department are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at the church.
