George L. Hurst

Mr. George Larue Hurst, age 92, formerly of Union, widower of Cleoria Baker Hurst, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge, Kansas.

Mr. Hurst was born in Washingtonville, PA, June 1, 1927 a son of the late Collins and Katherine Rice Hurst. He retired from Conso Products and was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II.

Surviving are several grandchildren and special friends, Betty Pierce and Jimmy Pierce, Jr. of Union.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Salem Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Wiseman.

The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

Richard Franklin Gregory
Union, SC


Mr. Richard Franklin Gregory, age 60, husband of Vickie Jones Gregory of 4180 Jonesville Lockhart Hwy., Union, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 22, 2020.

Mr. Gregory was born August 25, 1959 in Union, a son of June Griffith Gregory and the late Hugh Franklin Gregory. He was a 1977 graduate of Lockhart High School and a graduate of York Technical College. Mr. Gregory worked for Lockhart Power Company and a member of Lockhart First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife of twenty years are a son, Richard Norman Gregory and wife, Stacey of Union; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a son and daughter.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, February 24, 2020 at Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Delois Blanton. Burial will follow at Lockhart Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be Paul McCutcheon, Bobby Farr, Lynn Mitchell, Cyle Coker, Tommy Sumner and Caleb Cudd.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lockhart First Baptist Church, P.O Box 190, Lockhart, SC 29364.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

The family would like to give a heartfelt “Thank You” to Interim Hospice: Teresa, Jenny, Sara, Scott and Leighton. Also, a special heartfelt “Thank You” to Dr. Karla Hirshorn.

The family will be at their respective homes.

Robert E. ‘Bobby’ Garner
Clinton, SC


Mr. Robert Edward “Bobby” Garner, age 66 of Barrell Stave Rd., Clinton, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020 at his home.

Mr. Garner was born in Union, October 10, 1953, a son of the late Ralph Eugene Garner and Sara Greene Sprouse. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired as a truck driver. Mr. Garner was a former member of the S.C. National Guard and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Jennifer McAbee and Tammy Avery and husband Ken all of Clinton; a son, Eddie McAbee and wife Deana of Clinton; three sisters, Diane Burgess and husband Dennis of Greer, Opal Loper and Gena Crawford both of Washington; a brother, Lee Bogan and wife Teresa of Portland, TN; his best friend, Mike “Bubba” Sinclair of Union; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Garner was predeceased by two brothers, Marion “Chunky” Garner and William “Big Bill” Garner and his step-father, Henry Earl Sprouse.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, February 24, 2020 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Todd Cannon, Jr., Drew McAbee, Matt McAbee, Michael Burgess, Joel Gault and Ty Scott.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 until 1:00 PM Monday at the funeral home prior to the services.

Ralph William Greer, Jr.
Union, SC


Longtime journalist, Ralph Greer, passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at the age of 91.  Born December 9, 1928 in Spartanburg, a son of the late Ralph William Greer, Sr. and Launa Wood Greer. 

Ralph was a graduate of Union High School and attended Wofford College and the University of South Carolina.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a Veteran of the United States Naval Reserve.  Ralph served in many capacities in Union County, including being a volunteer fireman and heading the Red Cross Chapter of Union.

Ralph began his reporting career at WBCU in 1957.  In 1960 he joined the Spartanburg Hearld Journal as Bureau Chief of the Union County News Bureau and in 1969 he became Bureau Chief of the Columbia News Bureau reporting from the South Carolina State House as well as from Union County.  During his 19 years at the Statehouse he served 15 years as chairman of the South Carolina Capital Press Corps.  His duties as chairman required him to work closely with the Governors, Lieutenant Governors, Speakers of the House of Representatives, and Presidents of the Senate during those times.  His job as chairman also put him in close contact with the chairmen of the various legislative committees, the Secret Service and SLED.  In 1995, he retired from the Spartanburg Hearld to become self-employed as a media consultant and later edited a weekly Spartanburg County paper.  After he left the weekly paper, he wrote and published a book, “Sunshine, Sunshine, Sunshine,” the story of Bill “Oogie” Brown and the people of Union County who loved him.  From 2001 until 2007 Ralph worked at the Union Daily Times where he wrote feature stories and a weekly column, “Reflections.”  In October 2009, the Union County News opened, and Ralph joined as an original staff member and continued his weekly “Reflections” column.

Surviving are his wife of over 69 years, Regenia Garner Greer of the home; two daughters, Margaret Anthony “Toni” Greer of the home and Leslie Greer Kiser of Charleston; a granddaughter, Caroline Greer Kiser of Charleston; and a son-in-law, Jonathan Noel Kiser, Sr. of Charleston. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his grandson, Jonathan Noel “Jack” Kiser, Jr.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2020.

A public celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Bauknight. A visitation and reception will immediately following the services in the church fellowship hall.

Elease Sumner “Sister” Osborne
Buffalo, SC


Mrs. Elease Sumner “Sister” Osborne, age 74, of 107 Broad St., Union, widow of James H. “Ozzy” Osborne, passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at the home of her granddaughter.

Mrs. Osborne was born May 17, 1945 in Union, a daughter of the late James Burk Sumner and Helen Sumner Sumner.  She was a graduate of Union High School and had worked for many years as a Substitute Teacher for Union County Schools.  Mrs. Osborne was a lifelong member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she had previously helped with the Children’s Ministry.

Surviving are a daughter, Jamie Osborne of Union; a son, Johnny Osborne and wife Lisa of Pauline; two brothers, James B. Sumner and wife Rachel and Robert M. Sumner all of Union; ten grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Osborne Pike.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 21, 2020 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Johnny Osborne.  Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery. 

Active pallbearers will be Keith Pike, Jimmy Medford, Cody Alexander, Michael Sartor, and Darrell McKissick.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Brandy Sartor, 1044 Main St., Buffalo, SC 29321.


Mark Kevin Ammons, Jr.
Union, SC


A celebration of life service for Mark “Kevin” Ammons, Jr., will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, February 21, 2020 at the Whitmire Church of God conducted by Rev. Jimmy Hunnicutt and Rev. Ray Southerland. Burial will be at a later date at Whitmire Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Friday at the church prior to the services.

Kevin was born in Newberry, June 20, 1989, a son of Veronica Southerland Garland of Union and Mark Kevin Ammons, Sr. of Whitmire. He worked as an electrician by trade but had many other talents. He attended Light House Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pacolet with his family. Kevin had in infectious smile and a love for helping others and was an avid Gamecock fan. Kevin was loved by many and touched many lives in his thirty years. “Until we meet again” 1 Thessalonians 4:14

Surviving in addition to his mother and father are twin sons, Jack S. Ammons and Jordan S. Ammons and their mother Dawn Wallen all of Whitmire; a sister, Jessica Ammons; a brother, Stephen Ammons both of Union; his maternal grandfather, Rev. Ray Southerland of Spartanburg; his maternal grandmother, Emily Smith of Whitmire and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Kevin was predeceased by a brother, Matthew Ammons, his paternal grandparents, Jack and Betty Ammons and his maternal great-grandparents, Lawrence and Elizabeth Inman.

Raye P. Hellams
Union, S.C.


Mrs. Raye Parker Hellams, age 98, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Heartland Healthcare of Union.

Mrs. Hellams was married 58 years to the late Charlton “Charlie” Hellams. They have two daughters, Marsha Hellams Purvis (Gabe) of McClellanville, SC and Jan Hellams Kennedy (Pat) of Moore, SC; two step-granddaughters, Mary Kennedy Easley (Jason) and Kerry Kennedy Gromley (Chris).

Her beloved nieces and nephews include John Parker (Kay), Annie Parker, Ginny Savini (Tom), Lee LoPriore (Chris), Kathy Meredith Harp (Sam) and Debbie Meredith Gilbert. Also surviving are many great nieces and nephews.

Beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and dear friend to so many, she was born in 1921 in Franklin County Georgia. She was predeceased by her parents, Annabelle Lee Shirley Parker and Clyde Lee Parker. She was also predeceased by her younger brother, John Reid Parker and her older sister, Sara Frances Parker Meredith.

Mrs. Hellams grew up in Anderson, SC and graduated from Anderson (Girls) High School with post-secondary training in accounting. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Carolina Milling Company in Laurens.

The Hellams moved to Union in 1964 where she was an active volunteer; charter member of hospital auxiliary; member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Clyburn-Whitener Sunday School class; member of the Family and Community Leaders Organization; Methodist Care Group and Young at Heart. Mrs. Hellams was also an avid bridge club member and true fan of Clemson football. In addition, she found time for a vegetable garden.

The family is very grateful to the many angels who cared for Mrs. Hellams at Heartland Healthcare of Union and Heartland Hospice Care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Visitation with a reception will immediately follow the services. Private family burial will follow.

Micky Wayne McFalls

Mr. Micky Wayne McFalls, age 51, husband of Brandy Boyea McFalls, of 518 T Bishop Road, Jonesville, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2020 at his home.

Mr. McFalls was born in Union, January 25, 1969, a son of the late James McFalls and Eugenia Floyd McFalls of Union. He was a self-employed contractor. Mr. McFalls was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Tyler McFalls and Austin McFalls, both of the home; two sisters, Rhonda Lee and her husband David and Jackie Thompson, all of Union; a twin brother, Ricky McFalls, of Buffalo; in-laws, Pam and Rick Boyea; sister-in-law, Brittany Bell; brother-in-law, Ryan Boyea and several special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Eugene McFalls.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ryan Boyea, Wesley Millwood, Neal Lee, Brooks Lee, Bradley Thompson, and Matthew Thompson.

Dorothy Austin Ramsey

Mrs. Dorothy Austin Ramsey, age 84 of Woodlawn Manor, widow of Carl Martin Ramsey, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. Ramsey was born February 18, 1935 in Union, a daughter of Johnnie Lawrence “Josh” Austin and Grace Rogers Austin.  She was formerly employed with Buffalo Mill.  Mrs. Ramsey was of the Baptist Faith and faithfully attended the Union County Senior Citizen’s Group.

Surviving are a daughter, Jane Austin Jordan and Jim Hitchcock of Ooltewah, TN; a grandson, Louis Merriman “Tripp” Jordan, III and his father, Louis Merriman Jordan, Jr., both of Union; and a sister, Polly Haney of Buffalo.  She was predeceased by a brother, John Wesley Austin, a sister, Nancy Austin Beck, and a nephew, Larry Dobbs.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Mr. Francis Ramsey.  Visitation will be held immediately following the services at the cemetery.

Florence A. Mummery

Mrs. Florence Carrie Alwardt Mummery, age 81 of 107 Muriel Dr., Jonesville, SC, widow of Ronald A. Mummery, Sr. passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2020.

Mrs. Mummery was born October 22, 1938, a daughter of the late Clarence and Ruth Broadbrooks Alwardt. She was a graduate of Attica High School in Attica, NY and had worked as a Nurse’s Aid in Wyoming County Community Hospital for 25 years. Mrs. Mummery spent her life being a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed making crafts, traveling, and gardening. The thing Florence loved most was visiting with friends and loved ones.

Surviving are three sons, Ricky A. Mummery and wife Laura of Shenandoah, PA, Ronald A. Mummery, Jr. of Jonesville, SC, and James R. Mummery of Yorkshire, NY; four daughters, Karen Fisher and husband Gerald of Wolcott, NY, Mary Lou Hathaway and husband James of Warsaw, NY, Laura Jean Franklin and husband Ronald of Bliss, NY and Loretta Lynn Walsh and husband Gerald of Pacolet, SC; 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date in Warsaw, NY.

Mrs. Haley Danielle Sanford Thomason, age 26, wife of Dylan Thomason of 129 Gideon St., Jonesville, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at her home.

Mrs. Thomason was born in Union, October 1, 1993, a daughter of Gregg and Sonya Trammell Sanford of Jonesville. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology. Haley enjoyed crafts and loved music and singing. She was a loving mother, wife, daughter and friend. She was the love of her Momma’s and Daddy’s life and was her Momma’s best friend. Haley loved her Nana and Papa and always had a smile on her face.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter, Zaleigh Bell Marie Thomason; two sons, Zayden Blake Owens Horne and Zli Michael Dylan Thomason all of the home; a brother, Gregory “Lil’ Man” Sanford of Jonesville; her maternal grandparents, Francis and Marie Trammell of Jonesville; aunts and uncles, Phyllis Rogers and husband Jim of Pacolet, Myra Dameron of Jonesville, Richard Lovings and wife Laura of Union and a special aunt, Tracy Smith and friend Jason Lewis of Jonesville; Amber Therrell, Amanda Bauthsavoung, Holli Barnes, Nevaeh Mejia, and Hal Garner. Haley was predeceased by her paternal grandmother, Dorothy Lovings, an aunt, Kathy Garner and an uncle, Boyd E. “Bubba” Sanford.

Mary Louise Tidwell

Mary Louise Tidwell, age 93 of 106 Pineneedle Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Miss Tidwell was born in Chester, October 27, 1926, a daughter of the late John Sexton Tidwell and Frances Robinson Tidwell. She was a graduate of Union High School and had worked in sales with Fincher’s Clothing. Miss Tidwell was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a brother, John Tidwell and wife Heike of West Columbia, and a number of nieces and nephews. Miss Tidwell was predeceased by five sister, Arlene Wilson, Doris Loyd Athele Dickerson, Marcella Shirey and Marceda Tidwell and two brothers, Eugene Tidwell and Gladney Tidwell.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home prior to the services.

Jane W. Owenby

Mrs. Jane Wood Owenby, age 88, of 301 Catawba St., widow of W.E. “Bill” Owenby, passed away February 11, 2020 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. Owenby was born in Union, May 27, 1931, a daughter of the late J.E. and Ruth Williard Wood. She was an honor graduate of Union High School, was employed by the First National Bank and retired from Arthur State Bank. Mrs. Owenby was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Union, and a member of the Fair Forest Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and her late husband were married for 64 years.

Surviving are three sons, William B. “Barry” Owenby and wife Valerie of Alexandria, VA, James C. “Jim” Owenby and wife Tongaa of Mount Airy, NC and John P. Owenby of Boiling Springs; five grandchildren: Ruth O. Hampton and husband Robert, Rebekah Naomi Owenby, Joy Owenby, Abbey Owenby and Togo Owenby and three great-grandchildren: Logan, William and Jordan. Mrs. Owenby was predeceased by a sister, Betty W. Duke.

The family wishes to express a special Thank You to the staff and nurses of Heartland along with caregivers, Sue Morgan and Joey and Sara Beth Gregory for the care and concern of Mrs. Owenby throughout the years.

Mrs. Mamie Lou Roark Horne, age 88, formerly of 500 Toney Rd., Union, widow of Lewis Horne, passed away Monday, February 10, 2020 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Center.

Mrs. Horne was born November 11, 1931 in York, a daughter of the late Russell Roark, Sr. and Estelle Ashe Roark.  She was retired from Conso Products.  Mrs. Horne was of the Baptist Faith.  She was hardworking and helped raise three generations of family.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara McCall-Crayne and husband Phil of Union; a son, Bobby Horne and wife Betty of Union; a sister, Goldie Brock of Union; two brothers, Russell Roark and Albert Roark, both of Union; three granddaughters, Kacie Petrie and husband Shane, Megan McCall, and Jessica Levister; three great-grandchildren, Carson, Ethan and Crystal; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Horne Little; four sisters, Frances Woods, Bobbie Jean Pitts, Dorothy Johns, and Faye Phipps; and a brother, Kenneth Roark.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Scott.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Petrie, Freddie Crawford, Harry Woods, Russell Roark, III, Steve Roark, and Howard Wells.

Miss Mary Jo Gregory, age 93 of 401 Hart Street, Union, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 8, 2020 at her home.

Miss Gregory was born in Union, SC December 5, 1926, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Gregory and Lollie Jolly Gregory. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the Textile Industry. Miss Gregory was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of the Judy Graham Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two nieces: Mary Ann Bell of Saluda and Jean Banks of Greenwood and two nephews, Donald Ray “DR” Sanders and wife Cherryl and John Richard Gregory all of Union. Miss Gregory was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Gregory and Anita Sanders and two brothers, Claude Gregory and John Gregory.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, February 10, 2020 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Vaughn. Burial will be in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Bell, Wayne Bell, Austin Bell, Ty Bell, Noah Bell and Geoffrey Latham. Members of the   Judy Graham Sunday School Class, Brown and Judy Fant and Jennie Braun are asked to sit in a group.

Joyce Brawley Ward

Mrs. Joyce Brawley Ward, age 67 of 490 Mudbridge Rd., Buffalo, widow of Bill Ward passed away unexpectedly at her home.

Mrs. Ward was born in Union, SC March 4, 1952, a daughter of the late Willie B. Brawley and Lillie Louise Knox Brawley. She was a graduate of Union High School and USC Spartanburg where she earned a Degree in Nursing. Mrs. Ward was employed with Avis Car Rental and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a brother, George M. Brawley of Spartanburg; a niece, Tracy Sinclair and husband David of Pauline and a nephew, Jackie Brawley and wife Debbie of Jonesville.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, February 13, 2020 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Angela Atkinson Eubanks

Mrs. Angela Atkinson Eubanks, age 52, of 206 E. Hillcrest Ave., Union, passed away Monday, February 3, 2020 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mrs. Eubanks was born September 8, 1967 in Union, a daughter of the late Jerry Charles Atkinson, and Mary Peahuff Lee.  She was a 1985 graduate of Jonesville High School and a 2011 graduate of USC Upstate where she earned her Bachelors in Business Administration.  Mrs. Eubanks was formerly employed with TSA at the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport.  She leaves behind many special friends and loved ones.

Surviving are three sons, Randall Eubanks and wife Lauren of Union, Brandon Eubanks of Spartanburg and Jared Atkinson of Union; a sister, Kim Knighten and significant other Dean Erwin of Union; two brothers, Todd Atkinson of Connecticut and Scott Atkinson of Clemson; three grandsons, Jackson Eubanks, Thomas Eubanks, and Jace Atkinson; four nieces, Amanda Atkinson of Connecticut, Heather Knighten, Brandi Knighten, and Jessica Black all of Union; a nephew, Matthew Atkinson of Connecticut; and a several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, February 7, 2020 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Chris Gulledge.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of her son, Randall Eubanks and wife Lauren, 761 Barnado Road, Union, SC 29379.

Bertie C. Lanford

Mrs. Bertie Josephine Cannon Lanford, age 89, widow of James C. “Jim” Lanford, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Lanford was born in Pauline, November 1, 1930, a daughter of the late Angus and Lemma Harmon Cannon. She was a graduate of Pauline High School and a member of Legacy at Beaver Hills Baptist Church in Roebuck. When her health declined, Mrs. Lanford moved from Roebuck to Union to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Mrs. Lanford was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Doris Strahley and husband Mike of Union; two sons, Dale Lanford and wife Brenda of Union and James Todd Lanford and wife Elyn of Jacksonville, FL; a daughter-in-law, Frances Lanford of Wellford; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lanford was predeceased by a son, John E. Lanford.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Legacy at Beaver Hills Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Manning Strickland. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Frank “Bootsie” Lanford, David White, Toney Harris, David Liner, Darrel Mabry and John Parris. Staff and nurses of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home are asked to sit in a group

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the services.

The family wishes to express a special Thank You to the staff and nurses of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and Spartanburg Regional Hospice for their care given to Mrs. Lanford.

Nancy M. Phillips

Mrs. Nancy Lee McGlothan Phillips, age 59, wife of Sam Phillips, of 181 Hilltop View, Union, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Union Medical Center.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Union, May 17, 1960, a daughter of the late Arthur “Jack” McGlothan and Ethel Southerland McGlothan. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Church of God.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Heather Keisler and husband Chris; two sons, Russell Phillips and wife Leslie and Robbie Phillips and wife Tara all of Union; two sisters, Joyce Dawkins and Janet Bogan both of Jonesville; a special friend, Debbie Tallent of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Phillips was predeceased by four sisters, Brenda Carter, Libby Gardin, Mary Taft and Wanda McDermont.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Russell Phillips, Michael Phillips, Aaron Phillips, Chris Keisler, Jonas Keisler and C.J. Keisler.

Mrs. Phillips will be carried to the home, 181 Hilltop View, Union, where the family will receive friends.


Louise Jeter Odell
Union, S.C.


Mrs. Louise Jeter Odell passed away at home on January 30, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Union on May 17, 1929 to John Mobley Jeter and Louise McKissick Jeter at 701 East Main St., where she still made her home.

Mrs. Odell was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where she attended when her health allowed. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended Limestone College. For many years she was employed by Union County Schools as an administrative assistant.

Mrs. Odell was predeceased by her devoted husband of 65 years, Jack Charles Odell, her parents, a sister Lillian Jeter Cooper, brothers, Joseph McKissick Jeter, Robert Bothwell Jeter, Mobley Lewis Jeter. Left to cherish her memory are a son, John Charles Odell (Jacquelyn); two daughters, Jennie Louise Odell and Amy Odell Allen (Jay) and a special niece, Ethel Jeter Sutton (Robert). Mrs. Odell had six grandchildren, Catherine Lazar Odell, John Mobley Odell, Jennifer Gray Knox (Joseph), John Riley Gray, Rebecca Louise Hope (Robert) and Abby Kate Shirley (Collins) and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 PM Wednesday, February 5, 2020 in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church, Union.

A private burial will be at Grace United Methodist Church cemetery conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Pallbearers will be Al Black, Sam White, Ernie Godshall, Ralph Thompson, Robert Sutton and Ted O’Dell.

Mr. Ralph Dempsey Gregory, age 89, of 143 Toney Rd., Union, widower of Daisy Murphy Gregory, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020 at his home.

Mr. Gregory was born in No Man’s Land, NC, a son of the late Lewis and Rhoda Watson Gregory. He was a retired textile worker and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Gregory was also an avid fisherman. He was a retired veteran of the SC National Guard having served his county for 32 years.

Surviving are a son, Randall Gregory and wife Darlene of the home; four daughters, Libby Davis and Brenda Little and husband Roy all of Jonesville and Judy Griffin and Sara Smith and husband Leciel all of Union; a sister, Rachel Gregory of Union; a special niece, Kim Roark of Jonesville and a special friend and caregiver, Dabriada Alman of Union. Mr. Gregory is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, February 3, 2020 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial with Full Military Honors will be at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Smith, Chad Cameron, Jason Cameron, Marshal Adams, Ken Adams, Roger Bailey, Joe Stepp and William Jolly. Mr. Gregory’s National Guard friends are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:45 PM Monday at the chapel prior to the services.
