George W. “G.W.” Turner, Jr.

Union, SC


Mr. George Washington “G.W” Turner, Jr., age 80, of 234 Munro St., Union, formerly of Jonesville, passed away Friday, February 27, 2015 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. He was the widower of Joyce Anthony Turner.

Mr. Turner was born in Union Co., June 18, 1934, a son of the late George W. Turner, Sr. and Bertha Patterson Turner. He was retired from Musgrove Mills in Gaffney and was a member of the Jonesville Church of God.  Mr. Turner served in the SC National Guard, Jonesville Unit.

Surviving are five daughters, Deborah T. Dover of Woodruff, Sheril T. Lynch of Jonesville, Teressa Rabb of Buffalo, Ann Armstrong of Union and Tammy Tate of Gaffney; one son, Christopher Turner of Jonesville; two sisters, Virginia T. Roberts and Hazel T. Millwood both of Jonesville; one brother, Loyd Turner of Jonesville; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. Mr. Turner was predeceased by two daughters, Vickie Turner and Karen Turner; a sister, Myrtle T. Keith and three brothers, Noah Turner, Harold Turner and John Turner.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 1, 2015 at the Jonesville Church of God conducted by Rev. Roger Byrd.  Burial will be at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Ken Dover, Bobby Tucker, Matt Dyer, Christopher Lynch, Cory Dyer, and Gerald Turner.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday at the church prior to the services.

Lawrence Price, Sr.
Union, SC


Mr. Lawrence Price, Sr, age 79, husband of Shirley Cargill Price of 203 Cottage Avenue, Union, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Price was born in Union, SC May 28, 1935, a son of the late Frank Price and Lillie Mae Waldrop Price. He was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College. Mr. Price retired from the S.C. Department of Corrections in Cross Anchor. He was a Veteran of the US Army having served from 1958 to 1960, serving thirteen months in Germany. Mr. Price was a member of Crestview Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. For twenty-nine years, Mr. Price coached little league baseball and had also coached flag football, soccer and basketball.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Angela Price Knighten and husband Michael; three sons: Larry Price Jr and wife Jennifer, Keith Price and wife Kim and Shawn Garner; four sisters: Margie Cope, Marie Atkinson, Minnie McGraw and Lillie Garner all of Union; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Price was predeceased by a son, Steven Lynn Price, a daughter-in-law, Jackie Groves Price, son-in-law Keith Kerr, two sisters, Betty Mallett and Frances Henderson and three brothers, Earl Price, Arthur Price and George Price.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Crestview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Josh Freeman, Rev. Jerry Lawson and Rev. Jimmy Skinner. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Knighten, Ricey Kerr, Robert Williams, Harley Johns, Gerald Alman and Robbie Jett. Members of Mr. Price’s former ball teams with whom he coached, members of the Men’s Sunday School Class, the Dixie League Association and the Gamecock Club are asked to serve as the Honorary Escort.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Roger ‘Waynie’ Hucks
Union, SC


Mr. Roger Wayne “Waynie” Hucks, age 59 of 610 Toney Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Hucks was born in Union, July 21, 1955, a son of the late Willard W. Hucks, Sr. and Ada Johnson Hucks Keasler.  He was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed in the construction industry.

Surviving are a sister, Tanya “Lulu” H. Sanford, with whom he made his home; his companion, Wanda Ward of Union; a daughter, Hedi Dietz of Charleston and two grandchildren.  Mr. Hucks was predeceased by two brothers, Tommy Hucks and Willard “Snowball” Hucks.

A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Friday, February 27, 2015 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Scott and Rev. Tommy Mann.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

Brenda Eubanks Monroe
Union, SC


Ms. Brenda Eubanks Monroe, age 59 of 728 Hawkins Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Ms. Monroe was born November 10, 1955, a daughter of the late Harold E. Eubanks, Sr and Betty Sutton Eubanks. She was a graduate of Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Monica Quinn and husband Walter; a son, Chad Monroe and wife Brandi; her companion of thirty-four years, Larry Black; a sister, Debbie Haney; a brother, Harold Eubanks, Jr and wife Janet all of Union; nine grandchildren: Mallerie Quinn, Bailey Quinn, Alayna Monroe, Claire Monroe, Alex Harvey, Drew Harvey, Dustin Ochiltree, Brett Ochiltree and Gabriel Parker. Ms. Monroe was predeceased by a daughter, Christie Parker.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, February 27, 2015 at Greater Union Church conducted by Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Timmy Hollingsworth, Terry Hollingsworth, Kenneth Black, Curtis Eubanks, Bobby Hall, Mike Eubanks and Ed Eubanks.

Visitation will be held 1:45 to 2:45 PM Friday in the church prior to the service.

Sandra P. Seymore
Union, SC


Mrs. Sandra Puckett Seymore, age 60, wife of Clyde C. Seymore, Jr., of 917 Lover’s Lane Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Seymore was born in Union, January 12, 1955, a daughter of the late Clarence Puckett, Sr. and Janie Gregory Puckett. She was retired from the S.C. Dept. of Corrections and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Chad Seymore, and Timothy Seymore and wife Kryssie F. Seymore all of Union; three grandchildren, Cole Seymore, Courtney Seymore and Kayla Newton.  Mrs. Seymore was predeceased by a brother, Clarence “Butch” Puckett, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, February 27, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. J.D. Wyatt and Mr. Jimmy Seymore.  Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be David Varner, Mike Smith, John Williams, Heath Haney, Brian Wishert and Eddie Crow.  The following are asked to serve as the honorary escort Cotton Robertson, Joey Gregory, Allen Yeargin and Greg Ochiltree.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home if weather permitting.  Otherwise, visitation will be 1:00 until 3:00 PM Friday at the funeral home prior to the services.  Announcements will be posted by Holcombe Funeral Home or call 864-427-3665.

Mary T. Hodge
Spartanburg, SC


Mrs. Mary Tillery Hodge, age 77, widow of William W. Hodge, Jr., formerly of Union, passed away Sunday February 22, 2015 at Eden Terrace, Spartanburg, where she made her home.           

Mrs. Hodge was born in Kinston, NC, August 5, 1937, a daughter of the late John Arrington Tillery and Mary Daniel Reaves Tillery.  She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where she received her BA degree in Education and she received her Master’s in Education from Converse College. Mrs. Hodge was a retired educator, having taught Math and Science in the Union Co. Schools for over 30 years. 

Mrs. Hodge was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where she served on several committees in various capacities. She was a member of the Union Co. Historical Society, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution - Fairforest Chapter, the National Society of Colonial Dames, XVII Century - Colonel Jacob Blackwell Chapter.

A wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Mrs. Hodge enjoyed playing bridge, serving her church, beach vacations with family and especially spending time with her eight grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Leigh Hodge Sterrett of Raleigh, NC and Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Hall and husband Robin of Summerville; two sons, John Arrington Hodge and wife Laura of Spartanburg and William Wallace “Billy” Hodge, III of Union; grandchildren, John Hampton Hodge, Benjamin Arrington Hodge, Virginia Claire Hodge, Cody Hodge Sterrett, Jordan Todd Sterrett, Sydney Reaves Sterrett, Rebekah Grace Hall and Logan Campbell Hall.  Mrs. Hodge is also survived by her cousins, Margery Jean Hoggard of Surfside Beach, Elizabeth Kate Wolfe Latimer of Charleston and Dr. Leland S. Averett of High Point, NC.

Private services are being planned by the family.

Sybil Glenna Ray

Mrs. Sybil Glenna Moore Ray, age 86, of Starr, SC, widow of Jack Ewell Ray, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Ray was born in Starr, July 2, 1928, a daughter of the late Louie James Moore, Sr. and Rosa Eloise Whitten Moore. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and was a retired school teacher having taught at Calhoun Falls Elementary and Jonesville Elementary.  Mrs. Ray was a member of Starr United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Rosa R. Ford and husband Chad of Jonesville; a sister, Foy M. Griffin of Indian Land, SC; and three grandchildren, Charlie Waddell, Jack Waddell and McClain Ford. Mrs. Ray was predeceased by a sister, Reba Glenn and a brother, Louie Moore, Jr.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, February 23, 2015 at Southlawn Memorial Gardens in Anderson.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Rosa R. Ford, 305 Pacolet St., Jonesville, SC  29379.

Vivian Robinson Adams
Union, SC


Mrs. Vivian Robinson Adams, age 91 of 113 Philippi Church Road, Union, widow of Claude Adams passed away Friday, February 20, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Adams was born in the Adamsburg Community of Union, a daughter of the late Ester Robinson and Cora Boulware Robinson. She was the former owner –operator of the Village Hut Clothing and previously worked at Excelsior Mills. Mrs. Adams was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Mattie R. Turner and husband Bobby with whom she made her home; a brother, Olin Robinson of Union; a daughter-in-law, Carol Adams of Pickens and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Adams was predeceased by a son, Kerry L. Adams; three sisters, Lucille Grant, Ruby Cudd and Sarah R. Rice and six brothers: Denny Robinson, Heyward Robinson, Clyde Robinson, Raymond Robinson, Eddie Robinson and Ester Robinson, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Adams nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Members of Mrs. Adams Sunday school class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 1:45-2:45 PM Sunday in the church prior to the service.

Richard Glenn “Richie” Sparks

Mr.  Richard Glenn “Richie” Sparks, age 45, of 1500 Highway 176 Bypass, Pacolet, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Sparks was born in Union, SC on December 6, 1969 a son of Robert Glenn Sparks and fiancée Connie Sinclair of Union and Yvonne Seiler McAlister and husband James McAlister of Spartanburg.  He attended the University of South Carolina at Union and Spartanburg Community College.  Mr. Sparks was employed with Kohler as a Robotics Technician and was formerly employed with NASCAR as a Technical Inspector.  He attended Potter’s House Church.

Richie hobbies included fishing, golfing, building and driving race cars, and riding his custom Harley. He was very kind hearted, especially with children.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Tori Webb; a granddaughter, Kinsley Webb; siblings, Bobby Sparks, Mark McAlister, Crystal McAlister, Amanda Sparks Howard, Tracy Sparks, and Christian Sparks; a special brother, Jimmy Morris; two aunts, Shelia M. Roach and Janice Babb; a number of nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog Spanky Sparks.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Potter’s House Church conducted by the Rev. Don Moore and Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey and Christian Sparks. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be James Ivey, Jamie Ivey, Jimmy Morris, Christian Sparks, Robbie Quinn, and Tyler Smith.

Mrs. Kathy Walker Vinson, age 62, wife of John “J.T.” Vinson of 117 Red Road, Union, (Lockhart Community), passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Vinson was born in Lockhart, SC, a daughter of Curtis E. “Red” Walker of Lockhart and the late Peggy Brannon Walker. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was a former textile worker and had previously worked as a CNA for Heartland of Union. Mrs. Vinson was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher.

Surviving in addition to her husband and father are two sons: Danny Vinson of Lockhart and Chad Vinson and wife Stacie of Union; two grandchildren: Kaycie Vinson and Emma Vinson. Mrs. Vinson was predeceased by three brothers: Kenneth E. Walker, Keith Walker and Clint Walker.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Bishop. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Robert Allen “Bob” Garner

Mr. Robert Allen “Bob” Garner, age 60, husband of Lisa Lipsey Garner of 1015 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy, Union, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Garner was born in Union, June 25, 1954, a son of Kedrick and Rebecca Little Garner of Jonesville. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was employed with his father at Union Power and Equipment in sales and repair of boats, outboard motors, tractors and power equipment for fifty-four years. He was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mr. Garner was a hardworking, honest man with the heart the size of Texas. He loved his family and numerous friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Jennifer Wilkins of the home; grandsons: R.J. Wilkins, Alex Wilkins and Will Wilkins; two brothers, Bill Garner of Jonesville and David Garner of Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Garner was predeceased by a brother, Richard Garner.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, February 20, 2015 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Sara Adair Burns, age 56 of 4962 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union (Lockhart community) passed away, Sunday, February 15, 2015 at her home.

Ms. Burns was born in Union, January 25, 1959, a daughter of the late LeBron and Billie Rae Burns.

She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and the University of South Carolina, Union.  Adair enjoyed working with youth and handicapped children. She had been employed with several agencies in Union Co. as a Youth Counselor. She was a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and was an avid horse lover and a South Carolina Gamecock fan.

Surviving are a sister, Melanie Burns Brewington and husband Ray of Lockhart; and cousins, Dawn Burns Knox of Union, Andy Burns and wife Jane and Darrell Burns and wife Alisha all of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Lockhart United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Donna Eidson and Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Wednesday prior to the services at the church.

Billie Rae Burns

Mrs. Billie Rae Cobb Burns, age 79 of 4962 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union (Lockhart Community), widow of LeBron Burns, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Burns was born in Greenwood, April 19, 1935 a daughter of the late Raymond and Willie Blackwood Cobb.  She was a graduate of Winthrop University receiving both her BS degree and a Master degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Burns was a retired teacher having taught in the Lockhart school for 17 years and was also a 3rd grade teacher at
Monarch Elementary School for 14 years. She was a member the National Educators Association, the South Carolina Educators Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma-Sigma Chapter.  Mrs. Burns was named Who’s Who Among America’s Elementary teachers in 1992.

Mrs. Burns was an active member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and had served the church as organist for 62 years. She also served as the choir director, a Sunday School teacher and as Treasurer. Mrs. Burns was also a member of the Union Co. Equestrian Association where she had served as president for two years. She was an avid Gamecock fan and had served on the Board of Directors of the U.S.C. Gamecock Club and as president of the Union Co. Gamecock Club. She was also a member of the Union Co. Friends of the Library and a member of the Union Co. Arts Council.

Surviving are a daughter, Melanie Burns Brewington and husband Ray of Lockhart; a niece, Dawn Burns Knox of Union; and two nephews, Andy Burns and wife Jane, and Darrell Burns and wife Alisha all of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Lockhart United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Donna Eidson and Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Dan Frederick “Danny” Little, age 51 of 939 Pea Ridge Hwy., Jonesville, passed away February 12, 2015.

Mr. Little was born in Union, May 18, 1963, a son of Allan and Joan Wheeler Little of the home. He was a 1981 graduate of Jonesville High School and a member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church.  Mr. Little was employed with Highland Timber Co. and had previously worked with Adams Brother’s Logging and also with Holcombe Funeral Home.  Danny was an avid baseball fan and had played for the Tri-County League and had played Church League Softball.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Mary Pacolette Genoble and husband Tommy; a brother, Todd Allan Little all of Jonesville; nieces and nephew, Liza Pacolette Genoble, Maggie Grace Genoble, Ella Paige Genoble and Hayden Allan Genoble. Danny was also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins, including a special aunt, Marian Belue.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Glenn Ribelin and Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be at the Porter-Gallman Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Hayden Genoble, John Garner, Mickey Belue, Shane Belue, Heath Belue, Bill Garner and John Adams.

Employees of Highland Timber Co. and Adams Brother’s Logging are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Nancy Gail Ponder Lowder Evans
Mesquite, TX


Nancy Gail Ponder Lowder Evans of 3117 River View Dr., Mesquite, TX was called to her heavenly home surrounded by her family at the hospice home of Mesquite, TX at 11:38 AM, Friday, February 8, 2015. 

Nancy was born on July 8, 1955 in Union, SC and there is where she lived until moving to Mesquite, TX at the age of 18.  She was the daughter of the late Max F. Ponder and Betty Jean Sprouse Ponder.  Nancy graduated Union High School in 1973.  She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years Philip Wayne Evans, of the home; two daughters, Shannon L. Burnnett (Jason) and Michelle Lowder all of Mesquite; two beautiful granddaughters, Lanie and Lissa Burnnett, all of Mesquite; and her grand-dog, Charlie; three brothers, Maxie Ponder (Darnell) of Buffalo, SC, Edward Eugene Ponder, and Mark Stanley Ponder; her nieces, Angela P. Fowler (Donnie), Tracy Bevis, and Kacie L Tucker (Shane); her nephews, Chad Ponder (Sherei), Scott Turner (Tonya), Billy Ponder (Ginnie), and Daniel Ponder.  Nancy was predeceased by a brother, James Martin Ponder and sister Anna Lisa Ponder Lawson. Nancy had a lot of relatives that live in Union including, two aunts and a lot of cousins. 

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home in Sunny Vale, TX by the Dr. Dennis Hochgraber and Shannon L. Burnnett.  The family received friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM.  Burial was held at Grove Hill Memorial Park, Dallas, TX.

New Hope Funeral Home in Sunny Vale, TX had charge of the services.

Mrs. Shirley Ann Johnson Sanders, age 75, wife of Charles F. Sanders of 131 Woodhaven Dr., Union, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Union, February 18, 1939, a daughter of the late Malcom and Ida Evans Johnson. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the John Wolfe division of Cone Mill, Carlisle Plant.  Mrs. Sanders was a member of New Life Baptist Church and had taught Preschool Sunday School for over 40 years.  She was the last surviving member of her immediately family.

Surviving in addition to her loving husband of 48 years are numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Shannon Faulkner and Rev. Guy Langston.  Burial will be at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the services.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Sanders, Craig Sanders, Ed Sanders, Chad Greer, Vince Vanderford, Nicholas Vanderford, Harrison Vanderford and Alex Greer.

Mr. Walter Steven Horne, age 70, husband of Cynthia Scott Horne of 4118 Lockhart Hwy, Union went home to be with the Lord Friday, February 6, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Horne was born in Union, SC November 10, 1944, a son of the late Sara Horne Rogers. He retired from Timken and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sherri H. Williams and husband Robert of Buffalo; a son, Steven Scott Horne; a brother, Perry D. Rogers both of Union; five grandchildren: Noah J. McCutcheon, Jonah P. McCutcheon, Justin Williams, Tiffany Williams and Donnie Williams all of Buffalo; seven great-grandchildren and a mother-in-law, Lois M. Scott of the home.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Robert Scott.

Active pallbearers will be Robert Palmer, Todd Palmer, Kevin Scott, Steve Gibson, Rev. Robert Scott and Marty Reardon. The following are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers: Kenny Scott, J.G. Gibson, P.D. Harris and Mickey Cranford.

Mrs. Regina Nikkole “Nikki” Grant, age 38, wife of Thomas “Tom” Grant of 116 Railroad Street, Union, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Grant was born in Mt. Shasta, CA January 1, 1977, a daughter of Sid Marley of Coquille Hills, Or and Vicky Johnson Marley of Santan Valley, AZ. She was a graduate of Mazama Klamath Falls High School, OR and attended Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Amber Homan of Yuama, WA, Lora Homan and Skylar Grant both of the home; three sisters: Melissa Simpson and husband Mike of Santan Valley, Kelly Marley of ID and Christina Sizemore of Easley; four brothers: Clint Sewald and wife Penny of Union, Vic Marley, David Marley and Joshua Marley all of ID and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 7, 2015 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted  by Rev. Rick Cook and Rev. Paul Childers.

Visitation will be held 9:45-10:45 AM Saturday in the chapel prior to the service.

Carolyn Hembree Boltin, age 70 of Beechaven Rd., Columbia, passed away Friday, January 30, 2015.

Ms. Boltin was born in Union, SC, daughter of the late B.F. and Marie Morris Hembree.  She was a graduate of Union High School and attended Winthrop College and University of South Carolina, Union.  Ms. Boltin worked 12 years for the S.C. Dept. of Corrections as an Administrative Specialist. She had also worked for SC DHEC, Wilbur Smith Printing Division and then as a Publications Manager for the S.C. Bar from 2000-20111.  Ms. Boltin attended Greenlawn Baptist Church of Columbia and was an active member of the Emily Lee Mission Group.

Surviving are a daughter, Hope Dezern of Spartanburg; her beloved companion of 13 years, Don Shirley of Blythewood; a son, Charles Randall Ardis; sister-in-law, Rebecca Hembree Wade of Union and two nephews, Jay Hembree and David Hembree. She was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Hembree of Union.

A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Linda Anderson at 4:30 PM Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel in Union.  The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

Mr. Jerry Juan Price, age 68 of 571 Timberlake Rd., Union, SC passed away after a brief illness Monday, February 2, 2015 at his home.

A native of Union County, Mr. Price was the son of the late Willie Wesley Price and Dorothy Mae Atkinson Price. He was a textile worker and was a good brother with a big heart.

Surviving are a brother, Rev. Charles Price and wife Dianne of Union; two half-brothers: Buddy Quinn of North Carolina and Benny Quinn of Jonesville; two half-sisters: Sandra Henderson and Patsy Calhoun of Spartanburg and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will held 2:00 PM Saturday, February 7, 2015 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Charles Price.

Visitation will be held in the chapel immediately following the service.

Dorothy V. “Dot” Fowler

Mrs. Dorothy V. “Dot” Fowler, age 86 of Union, widow of Curtis R. Fowler, passed away Monday, February 2, 2015 at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Mrs. Fowler was born March 17, 1928, a daughter of the late Albert Sidney Johnston Vaughan and Frances Mahalia “Fannie” Adams Vaughan. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from United Merchants – Union Mill Plant as the Plant Manager’s Administrative Assistant. Following retirement, she worked with Joyce’s Florist. Mrs. Fowler was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir for many years.

Surviving are a son, Andy Fowler and wife Pam of Union; two grandchildren: Ross Fowler and Nicole Fowler both of Union; a sister, Helen Belk of Union and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fowler was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Howell and Katie Johnson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Alfred Belk, Butch Belk, Neil Howell, Charles Howell, Keith Vanderford and Jerry Nance. Members of the Senior Adult Ladies II Sunday School Class of Mon Aetna Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:30 PM Thursday in the church prior to the service.

Mr. Carl Denver Dabbs, age 74, formerly of Lockhart, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Montrose Manor in Woodruff after a period of declining health.

Mr. Dabbs was born in Lockhart, September 18, 1940, a son of the late L.J. and Mary Justus Dabbs. He was a retired textile worker and attended Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Carla Martin and husband Greg of Moore and Caron Jones of Spartanburg; three brothers: James “Buster” Dabbs and wife Ruth of Sharon, Dean Dabbs of TN and Olin Dabbs and wife Laura of Lockhart; three grandchildren: Catherine Renfro, Kimberly Guthzeit and Rachel Jones and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Dabbs was predeceased by a grandson, Barrett Martin.

A memorial graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Lockhart Cemetery conducted by Rev. Brian Bishop.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Agnes Ruth Purkey

Mrs. Agnes Ruth McKinney Purkey, age 95, widow of Grady Lewis Purkey, formerly of 211 Fairbanks Street, Jonesville, passed away Monday, February 2, 2015 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Purkey was born in Jonesville, SC July 14, 1919, a daughter of the late Asbury and Florence McKinney. She was a homemaker and an active member of Jonesville Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Purkey loved her Lord and was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Purkey is survived by a niece, Wanda Burgess and husband Kevin of Jonesville. She was predeceased by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Gail Purkey and a grandson Todd Purkey.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown and Rev. Jeff Dean.

The family wishes to say a special “Thank You” to the staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and Gentevia Hospice for the care Mrs. Purkey received while a patient at Ellen Sagar.

Mary Maitlene Holcombe

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1 NIV).  On February 2, 2015, Mrs. Mary Matilene Raley Holcombe joined that great cloud of heavenly witnesses. 

Mrs. Holcombe was born to James Thomas and Ivie Clinkscales Raley of Vincent, Alabama on April 11, 1923.  She was the oldest of six children.  She graduated from Vincent High School and was the Valedictorian of her class.  On September 9, 1943 she married John Wright Holcombe (deceased) of Union, South Carolina.   

Mrs. Holcombe lived most of her adult life in Union, South Carolina.  She was a homemaker, a true helpmate, who devoted her life to her family, church, and community.  She was very active in the Westside Baptist Church of Union, South Carolina.  She worked with children, youth, Women’s Missionary groups, and taught a lady’s Bible Study class for more than thirty-years.  After the death of her husband, Mrs. Holcombe became a member of New Life Baptist Church in Union where she continued to serve and teach.  Mrs. Holcombe moved to Washington, North Carolina in 2009 to live with her daughter.  In 2009, she joined the First Baptist Church of Washington, where she continued to serve as her health permitted. 

Mrs. Holcombe is survived by her daughter Karen Holcombe Moore and son-in-law Dr. Jimmy Moore of Washington, North Carolina; her son, Walter E. Holcombe of Union, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Stephanie Warren and Amie O’Kane of Washington, North Carolina, and David Holcombe and Sarah Stevenson of Union, South Carolina.   She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.

In addition, Mrs. Holcombe is survived by a brother, Dan T. Raley of Alabama, and three sisters:  Nadine Southern, Sarah Weldon, and Christine Dorminey all of Alabama.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother Raymond Raley, and a daughter-in-law Beth Reynolds Holcombe.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Baptist Church Life Center in Washington, North Carolina at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 4, 2015.  Dr. Greg Barmer will officiate.  A visitation time will be held one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of her daughter, Karen Moore, 306 Cowan Street, Washington.

A graveside service will be held on 2:00 PM Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens in Union, South Carolina.  The family will receive friends prior to and after the service.

Mrs. Betsy Long McCall, age 86, wife of William Harvey “Bill” McCall of 152 Springdale Drive, Union, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. McCall was born in Jonesville, SC on October 11, 1928 a daughter of the late Jimmy Long and Kate Alman Long.  She was a graduate of Jonesville High School.  Mrs. McCall was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.  She had retired from Alman Insurance Agency where she worked for many years.  Mrs. McCall later worked alongside her husband for 22 years at McCall’s Frame Shop.  Betsy and Bill loved to travel and had the pleasure to travel to Ireland, Central America, and the Western United States especially Nevada together.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a sister, Jane Long Jones and husband William of Clinton, SC; a niece and a nephew and several great nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a brother, William Long and wife Frances and one niece and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. David Bauknight.  Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Pete Berry, Tommy Sherbert, Tommy Sinclair, Rick Matthews, Dr. Bill Webber, Charles Whitaker, and Freddie Gault.  The following are asked to form the honorary escort, John Heath, John Flynn, Jack Rash, and Winston Quinn.

Mr. Curtis Lewis Babb, age 79, husband of Judy Posey Babb of 136 Pinewood Acres Rd., Union, passed away Monday, February 2, 1015 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Babb was born in Buffalo, April 24, 1935, a son of the late William Robert Babb and Hazel Brooks Babb.  He was a graduate of Cecils Business College and was retired from Milliken Co.  Mr. Babb   attended Morningside Baptist Church where he was a member of the Gene Adams Sunday class.  Mr. Babb was a veteran of the US Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son Michael Babb of Union; a granddaughter, Brittany Babb of Atlanta; Heather Jones and son, Wyatt Grady, reared in the home; a sister, Laura Childers of Buffalo; and a brother, Ted Babb of Union. Mr. Babb was predeceased by three sisters, Barbara Lawson, Lucille Hubbard, and Vivian Johnson and a brother, Torrance Babb.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Forest Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum conducted by Rev. Dr. Aubrey Calvert and Rev. Buddy Hogan.

Visitation will be held at the graveside following the services.
