Mrs. Eddie J. Baldwin

Mrs. Eddie Jett Baldwin, age 88, widow of Marion Ross Baldwin of 217 Long Twelve St., Union, passed away, Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Baldwin was born in Union, September 30, 1925, a daughter of Carl and Ollie Millwood Jett. She was retired from United Merchants in Union.
Surviving are two sons, Bruce Jett and Tony E. Jett and special friend Cynthia Taylor all of Union; numerous grandchildren including, Robin Behler and Jackie Burns of Union, several great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews; two special friends, Gladys Henderson and Wanda Lockaby both of Union. Mrs. Baldwin was predeceased by a sister, Neely Clark and a brother, Carl “Buddy” Jett.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum conducted by Lt.’s Dawn and Jonathan Whitaker.

The family wishes to express a special thank you the Medi-Home Hospice, Shannon Vaughn, Missy Mullinax, Gwen Dillard, and Jennifer Cooper for their care and concern of Mrs. Baldwin during her illness.

Mrs. Shelby Jean Haney Turner, age 74, widow of Everett J. Turner of 554 Thornridge Rd., Union, passed away Friday, February 21, 2014 at Magnolia Manor in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Turner was born on Buffalo, July 15, 1939 a daughter of the late William Franklin Haney and Daisy Boulware Haney. She retired from Green Leaf Industries and was a member of Monarch Assembly of God Church.

Surviving are two sons, Brian Turner and Tommy Turner both of the home; an adopted son, Glenn Thomas of Clarksville GA; three sisters, Sandra West and husband Ralph of Union, Vanessa Hogan and husband Darrell of Cheraw, and Linda McCallister of Clarksville GA; three brothers, Michael Haney and wife Monica, William Haney and wife Shirley all of Union, and Gerald Haney and wife Tammy of Buffalo; two grandsons, Landon Turner and Todd Turner both of the home and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by four sisters, Dorothy Justice, Rosa Moore, Cindy Gibson and Maggie Miller and one brother, James Haney.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Rusty Robinson, Danny Bailey, Kevin Haney, Stanley Haney, Dennis Quinn and Jeff Benfield. Members of the “Hardee’s Bunch” are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00 PM Sunday at the church prior to the services.

Jerry Dean “Tre” Vaughn, III, infant son of Jerry Dean Vaughn, Jr. and Brittney Wicker Vaughn of Union passed away February 12, 2014.

Tre is survived also by two half-sisters, Sara and Emma Wicker of Newberry.

A memorial services will be scheduled for a later date by the family.

Mrs. Elizabeth White Yarbrough, age 90, widow of Larkin Van Yarbrough, Jr, formerly of 109 Baber Street, Union, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Yarbrough was born in Buffalo, SC December 2, 1923, a daughter of the late James T. White and Elizabeth Messer White. She retired from Atlas Vending Company in Greenville after twenty years of service. Mrs. Yarbrough had previously worked for Union Daily Times for ten years. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher and was a former WMU President. Mrs. Yarbrough was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Johnny Ray Yarbrough and wife Carolyn of Union; four grandchildren: Jason Yarbrough and wife Michelle, Jerry Yarbrough and wife Carolyn, Trey Arrington and wife Jennifer and Chad Arrington; a number of great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Yarbrough was predeceased by a son, Jimmy Yarbrough.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Monday, February 17, 2014 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Dr. Aulbrey Calvert and Mr. Trey Arrington.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Miss Helen Ruth Ivey, age 80, formerly of 202 Barnadoe Rd., Union, passed away Friday, February 14, 2014 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Miss Ivey was born in Union, SC July 16, 1933, a daughter of the late James Calvin Ivey and Emma Koon Ivey. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving are a special friend, Shirby Duckett of Union and a cousin, John Wilson and wife Valerie of Union.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, February 17, 2014 at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Mark Truitt.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mrs. Dora Sinclair Fleming, age 89, widow of Jake Fleming, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Fleming was born in Union, SC August 12, 1924, a daughter of the late Davis Sinclair and Florette Smith Sinclair. She retired from Excel Hosiery and had previously worked at Milliken & Co-Monarch Plant. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and was a proud member of the Red Hat Club of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Fleming was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was first married to the late Marion Steen.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary S. O’Shields and husband Larry of Union; a son, Bill Steen and wife Clara of Greenville; a sister, Sara Vinson and husband Jack of Union; four grandchildren: Kenny O’Shields, Pam Alexander and husband Doug, Shayla Durst and husband Tod and Dana Glenn and husband Scott and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fleming was predeceased by a sister, Emma Mitchell and four brothers, Melvin Sinclair, Earl and Murl Sinclair and Wilson Sinclair.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 16, 2014 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Bob Cato. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Johnny Dean Marchbanks, Sr., age 65, of 128 Dragway Dr., Union, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Marchbanks was born in Pickens, SC on November 26, 1948 a son of the late John Marchbanks and Mary Lee Hendricks. He had retired from Morgan Electric as an electrician. Mr. Marchbanks was a Veteran of the United States Navy having served in Vietnam and was a Mason with Roebuck Lodge No. 357.

Surviving are two daughters Deanna Moore and husband Michael of Spartanburg and Jessica Marchbanks of Union; two sons, Johnny Marchbanks, Jr. and wife Beth of Union and James Marchbanks and wife Sarah of Greenville; a sister, Judy Morgan and husband Robert of Roebuck; eight grandchildren; a nephew, Rusty Morgan and wife Julie of Pauline; a niece April Amick and husband Todd of Roebuck; two special friends, Sean and Debbie Howell of the home. Mr. Marchbanks was predeceased a sister, Donna Williams and a niece Miranda Williams.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, February 17, 2014 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb. The family will receive friends following the services.

Mr. Thomas Earl “Tommy” Nolan, Sr., age 68, husband Mary Ruth Hawkins Nolan, of 841 Sardis Rd, Union, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Nolan was born in Spartanburg, SC on June 22, 1945 a son of the late Vivian Marie Nolan Bowman, he was reared in the home of his grandparents, the late Clarence and Clara Belle Nolan. Mr. Nolan was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. He was retired from the City of Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a son, Thomas Earl Nolan, Jr. and wife Stephanie of Spartanburg; a grandson, Blake Nolan of Spartanburg; a granddaughter Allison Nolan of Spartanburg; a sister, Sandra Grayshock of Boiling Springs; an aunt, Mary R. Hawkins, of Spartanburg; two brother-in-laws, Marion Hawkins, of the home and Joseph Henry Hawkins, of Nashville, TN; and a niece, Tiffany Hawkins, of Tellico Plains, TN.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Donald O’Dell, Rev. Bob Allen, and Rev. Don Moore. Henry Edward "Bud" Sanders

Mr. Henry Edward “Bud” Sanders, age 80, husband of Betty Garner Sanders, of 871 Kelly Rd, Union, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Sanders was born in Union, SC on December 13, 1933 a son of the late Henry Freeman Sanders and Edna Porter Sanders. He was a graduate of Union High School. Mr. Sanders was a member of First Baptist Church Union, where he had served as a Deacon and was named a lifetime Deacon. “Bud” as he was affectionately known, was the manager of Union Oil Mill where he was employed 59 years. He was retired from the South Carolina National Guard - Union Unit. A Mason, he was member of Union Lodge No. 75. In recent years “Bud” was often seen in Two Sister’s Floral and More a business owned by his wife and sister-in-law.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Edward Sanders, Jr. of Stone Mountain, GA; a daughter, Beth S. Vanderford and husband Vince of Moore; two grandsons, who were “Bud’s” pride and joy, Nicholas and Harrison Vanderford of Moore; and two brothers, Paul Sanders and wife Becky and Charles Sanders and wife Shirley all of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 16, 2014 at First Baptist Church Union conducted by the Rev. Rick Pendleton, Rev. Scott Cobb, Rev. Robert Emory, and Mr. Norris Fowler. Private burial with Military honors will follow at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. George Thomas McInvale, age 80, formerly of 231 Country Rd, Union, widower of Shirley Button McInvale, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Heartland Healthcare of Union.

Mr. McInvale was born in Miami Beach, FL on February 21, 1933 a son of the late Charlie O. McInvale and Madge Elder McInvale Shane. He was a graduate of Miami Jackson High School and was retired as a self-employed contractor. Mr. McInvale was a veteran of the United State Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church where he was a former Chair of the Board of Deacons and an honorary Deacon. Mr. McInvale was also a member of the Union Amateur Radio Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Debby Duncan and husband Joey of Waterloo, SC and Cynthia Price of Spartanburg; an aunt Mary Lee Elder Parker of Union; four grandchildren, Shelley Cade and husband Justin of Arlington, VA, Jamica Duncan of Waterloo, SC, Russell Price, Jr. of Spartanburg, and Mallory Drew Duncan of Spartanburg; a great-grandson, Lucas James McDaniel; a special friend Patricia Price of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. James Aubrey Garner, age 90 of 300 Springs Street, Union, widow of Agnes Ophelia Mize Garner, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Heartland of Union.

Mr. Garner was born in the Kelton Comunity of Union County, SC  April 2, 1923, a son of the late James Gaston Garner and Lillie Sanders Garner. He was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and retired from Milliken & Co - Excelsior Plant. Mr. Garner was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and was a member of the Counting Committee. He was also a member of the Union County Senior Citizens and was an avid gardner. Mr. Garner was a Veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Diane Garner Youngblood and husband Terry of Jonesville; a son, Ronald Aubrey Garner of Buffalo; a sister, Fay Nelson of Jonesville; a special friend, Faye Rogers of Union; four grandchildren: Michael Garner and wife Suzy, Stacy Garner and fiancé Tom McAbee, Kevin Youngblood and fiancé Cindy Nations and Ashley Youngblood West and husband Cory and two great-grandchildren: Hayden Garner and Houston Garner. Mr. Garner was predeceased by two sisters, Ruby Sanders and Hilda Proctor and a brother, Roy Garner.

Mrs. Ruby Lee Alexander Plemons, age 77, wife of Jerry Von Plemons, of 110 Poppy Lane, Union, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Plemons was born in Union, SC on February 10, 1936 a daughter of the late Arthur B., Sr., and Onie Mary Riddle Alexander. She was retired from Milliken Co. — Monarch Plant. Mrs. Plemons was a member of Putman Baptist Church and the Annie Kingsmore Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband are, three sons, David Von Plemons and wife Candice of Chesnee, Timothy C. Plemons and wife Jimmie of Union, amd Jerry Von Plemons, Jr. and wife Anna Lisa of Union; a daughter Ginger Plemons Latimer and husband Daryl of Inman; five brothers, Johnny Alexander of Jonesville, Arthur B. Alexander, Jr. of Union, Frank Alexander of Union, Harold Dean Alexander of Travelers Rest, and Roy Alexander of Anderson; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one sister Doris Calvert.

Mr. Angus Wilkins”Red” Garner, age 100, widower of Isma Catherine Horne Garner, formerly of Jonesville, passsed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014.

Mr. Garner was born in Whitney Community of Spartanburg County, SC January 20, 1914, a son of the late Banks Wilkins Garner and Lillie Mae Foster Garner. He retired from the Town of Jonesville Utility Department and had previously worked as a police officer. Mr. Garner was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and also the American Legion in Jonesville. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Jean G. Long of Union; a son, Tommy A. Garner of Newberry; three grandchildren: Jennifer Belue, Paul Frost and Mack Garner; ten great-grandchildren;a great-great-grandchild; a niece, Carolyn Simpson of Simpsonville and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Garner’s great-grandsons and friends of the family will serve as active pallbearers.

Sara Ann Fowler

Heaven’s gain became the Earth’s loss when Sara Ann “Mimi” Fowler passed away at her home in Lockhart, SC on February 4, 2014 at the age of 84.

Mrs. Fowler was born in Union, SC on December 12, 1929 a daughter of the late Hayes Carwell and Sally Hames Breakfield. She was a proud Army wife and widow, and served this country just as honorably has her husband of more than 40 years, Augus Guy “Dood” Fowler. A proud steadfast member of the Lockhart United Methodist Church, she was truly one of God’s angels here on Earth. Her greatest joy came from helping people less fortunate than she was, and numerous residents of Union County are able to read due to her years spent with the Adult Education Program.

She was the world’s greatest mother to her children, Jimmy and wife Debbie, Patti and husband Peter, Mike and wife Mitzy, and Tamra and husband Wayne; the world’s greatest Mimi to her Grandchildren Monica and husband Casey, Brandy, Brittany, and Magen and to her two great-grandchildren AJ and Cohen. Mrs. Fowler was predeceased by one sister, Myrtie Cooper and one brother, Jimmie Breakfield.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 7, 2014 at Lockhart United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Donna Eidson and Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will follow at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Mr. James William “Jim” Crow, age 73, husband of Hazel Dyer Crow of 429 Oakland Rd., Union, passed away suddenly Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Crow was born in Union, March 2, 1940, a son of the late Frank A. Crow and Annie Belle Kennett Crow. He was a graduate of Union High School, attended the University of South Carolina and graduated the Duke University School of Divinity. Mr. Crow was a retired minister with the Southern Methodist Conference and also retired from Paradise Home Center. He was a member of Beaumont Baptist Church in Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Frank Thomas Crow and wife Cheryl of Moorehead City, NC; two daughters, Patti C. Shetley and husband Rev. Joey Shetley of Chester and Rosanne C. Garrett and husband Jimmy of Chesnee; six grandchildren, Katie C. Rupard and husband Jack, 1st Lt. Seth Thomas Crow, James Thomas Shetley and wife Jane E., Meris S. Jenkins and husband Rev. Jonathan Jenkins, Justin Andrew Garrett and wife Channing, and Jordan Taylor Garrett; and four great-grandchildren, Autumn Shetley, Aiden Shetley, Makensie Jenkins and Kaleb Jenkins.

Mr. Talmadge James “Tiger” Deal, Jr., age 62, of 140 Old Cemetery Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014.

Mr. Deal was born in Lockhart, September 9, 1951, a son of the late Talmadge James Deal, Sr., and Ruby Lamb Deal. He was a retired house painter and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Deal was also a Mason. He was previously married to the late Della Smith Deal Moss.

Surviving are a daughter, Lori Anne Deal of Union; three sisters, Donna Sue Hollifield of Fort Lawn, Janice Fallaw and Diane Melton both of Lockhart; two brothers, Ronnie Lamb of Union and Tommy Deal of Lockhart; four grandchildren, Courtney Roberts and husband T.J., Caleb Deal, Kristin Pruitt, and Mary Benvenuti; seven great-grandchildren, Alayna and Mia Cayte Roberts, Alaina and Simon Parkins, Zane Pruitt, Kinleigh and Kandace Robinbson; his live long friend, Gilbert “Nig” Smith of Union; and several nieces and nephews including Monty Lee Deal. Mr. Deal was predeceased by a step-son, Leslie Dale Parkins and a grandson, Mitchell Lee Parkins.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Lockhart Cemetery conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.

Active pallbearers will be Lonnie Melton, Bruce Miller, Mike Shrader, T.J. Roberts, Lee Owens, and Preston Thomas. The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery to form the honorary escort: Gilbert Smith, Larry Gene Cabiness, Ricky Fallaw, William Moss, Kent Smith, Monroe Smith, Carl Smith, Dennis Smith and Irvin Garner.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the graveside services.

Kathryn Ault Watts

Kathryn Ault Watts, age 86, widow of William Robert “Bob” Watts of 106 Woodlawn Ave., Union, passed away peacefully at her home Friday, January 31, 2014.

Mrs. Watts was born in New Tazewell, TN, December 6, 1927, a daughter of the late Lawrence Carroll Ault and Irene Payne Ault. She was a graduate of Carson Newman College and was a retired educator at Union High School. Mrs. Watts was a musician, having taught piano in her home for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Bethany Sunday School Class. She also was a member of the Union Music Club, the D.A.R., the Union Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and was an avid bridge player.

The last surviving member of four children, she is survived by a daughter, Judith Watts Breckenridge and husband Dr. Rufus Breckenridge of Greeneville, TN; two sons, William Robert “Bill” Watts, Jr. and wife Kathy of Clinton Township, MI and James Kenneth Watts and wife Pam of Purcellville, VA; eight grandchildren, Kathryn Suzanne Breckenridge Tremaine and husband Dustin of Kingsport, TN, Mary Audra Breckenridge Butler and husband Scott of Luckey, OH, Caroline Irene Breckenridge Soper and husband Jason of Daniel Island, SC, Judith Gentry Breckenridge of New Orleans, LA, Ethan James Watts; Abigail Grace Watts and Lauren Elizabeth Watts of Purcellville, VA and Samuel Baker Watts of Greenville, SC; five great-grandchildren, Jack Gentry Tremaine, Cole Robert Tremaine, Dominic Scott Butler, August Bryan Butler and Jacob Gardner Soper; numerous nieces and nephews including Mary Ault Cooper of Talledega, AL. Mrs. Watts was predeceased by a son, Charles David Watts.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Chaplain Traci Bennett.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Mrs. Watts’ care givers, “Her Girls:” Judy Guyton, Melinda Sorrow, Michelle Jones, Rhonda Tessler and Melinda Davis for their loving care of Mrs. Watts during her illness.

The family will receive friends Friday, February 7, 2014 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
