Charles Ray Vinson, Sr.

Mr. Charles Ray Vinson, Sr., age 81, of 4658 Buffalo West Springs Hwy., Pauline, widower of Mary West Vinson, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Vinson was born in Union, SC November 25, 1935 a son of the late Ernest Vinson and Ola Hyatt Vinson.  He was a graduate of West Springs High School.  Mr. Vinson was retired from Cone Mill – Carlisle Finishing Plant and retired as owner of Vinson Vehicles, LLC of West Springs.  He was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Club and the Freida Fuller Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two sons, Ray Vinson and wife Connie of Pauline and Eddie Vinson and wife Lori of Lyman; one grandson, Hayden Arledge of Lyman; a special great-nephew Wyatt Yarborough of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one brother, Ernest Vinson, Jr. and one sister Nancy Becknell. 

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Don Alexander and Mr. Donald R. Vinson.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Becknell, Mike Lawson, Paul Harvey, Tim Watson, Eddie Mims, and Jeff Lawson.  The following are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort, the Freida Fuller Sunday School Class, Medi Home Hospice, Brenda Thompson, Carrie Smith, Janet and Earl Evans, Tim Stevens, Eddie Lawson, and Larry West.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the church.

Shannon Lee Austin

Mr. Shannon Lee Austin, age 42, husband of Michelle Harris Austin of 226 Hancock St., Union, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mr. Austin was born in Union, April 18, 1974, a son of the late George and Sherry Knox Austin.  He was employed by Dollar General Distribution and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Austin was a hard-working man and a great husband, father, and Papa.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Carra Beth Austin of Union, Cassidy Marie Austin and Caylee Michelle Austin, both of the home; two brothers, Thomas Austin and Brent Austin both of Union; two beloved granddaughters, Blakelee Elizabeth Rebecca Bright and Tinslee Shannon Marie Bright; three very special brother-in-laws, Trey Harris, Michael Harris, and Mark Harris; and numerous cousins and friends. Mr. Austin was predeceased by his parents, George Austin and Sherry Knox Austin; his grandparents, Boyd and Grace Ingle Knox and Kale Austin Todd; and special nephew: T.J. Austin.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Aulbrey Calvert and Rev. Wayne Cooke.  Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jesse Harris, Cody Harris, Brian “Red” Brock, Jerry Grady, Vipinbhai Patel, Todd McGowan, Connor Harris and Eric Hartley.

Nellie Loree Lawson
Buffalo, S.C.


Mrs. Nellie Loree Boulware Lawson, of Buffalo, widow of William R. Lawson, passed away Wednesday December 28, 2016 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. 

Mrs. Lawson was born in Winnsboro, on June 26, 1931 a daughter of the late Belton and Lula Fee Boulware.  She was retired from United Merchants.  Mrs. Lawson was a devoted wife and mother.

Surviving are one daughter, Carol Boulware Moore and fiancée Donnie Kirby of the home; two sons, Ricky Boulware of the home and Butch Lawson and wife Terry of Chester; one granddaughter, Daniell Pruitt and husband Jason of Spartanburg; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Pruitt and Damon Kerbein both of Spartanburg; one brother, Thomas F. Boulware and wife Frances; three special nieces, Lorene Vinson and fiancée Charles Whittemore, Irene Abrams and fiancée Delano Thomas, and Alley Boulware all of Buffalo; a special friend, Susan Pruitt of Spartanburg; a number of nieces and nephews and two beloved pets Bouser and Blossum.  She was predeceased by four brothers, Curtis Boulware, BJ Boulware, Vernon Boulware, and Paul Boulware and five sisters, Daisy Haney, Kathleen Eller, Ruby Vinson, Nancy Boulware, and Edith Franklin.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess.  Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

James H. ‘Jim’ Hart, Jr.

Mr. James Hoyle “Jim” Hart, Jr., age 53, husband of Julie Robinson Hart of 810 Bishop Rd., Union, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Hart was born in Union, December 25, 1963, a son of Buddy Gillespie of Moore and the late Trudy Harris Gillespie and James Hoyle Hart, Sr.  He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and employed with Polydeck Screen Corporation in Spartanburg for 23 years.  Mr. Hart was a member of Crestview Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Amanda Black and husband Jake of Jonesville and Jami Danielle Axson and husband Michael of Pauline; one son, Rev. Josh Freeman and wife Cathy of Union; two sisters, Joie Lister and husband Ray of Greer and Nikki Hart of Chester; three brothers, Shawn Gillespie and wife Cassandre of Moore, Ronny Gillespie and wife Kari of Greer and Scott Dubose and wife Stephanie of San Diego, CA; special friends, B.J. and George Camp and their children, Drew and Drake Hyde;  4 grandchildren, Abbey Freeman, Aryn Freeman, Baylie Black, Ben Black and a new grandson expected in January, Brennan James-Thomas Black. Mr. Hart was predeceased by a brother, Robbie Hart, his maternal grandparents, Herbert and Evelyn Harris, his paternal grandparents, Carlisle and Margaret Hart and his other paternal grandparents, Elzie and Ruby Gillespie.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Crestview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Josh Freeman and Rev. Gene Pace. Burial will be at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Gaynelle Hooper Callahan Wade, age 77, of 201 Hidden Hill Rd., Union, widow of Thomas Vernon Wade, Sr., passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Wade was born in Union, August 8, 1939, a daughter of the late Lotus Odell Hooper and Agnes Gunning Hooper. She was a graduate of Union High School and was self-employed as a beautician. Mrs. Wade was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist and was first married to the late Jimmy Dean Callahan. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter, Luanne Thompson and husband Scott Jarrett; a son, Mike Callahan and wife Sherry all of Union; a brother, Harold Dean Hooper of West Columbia; five grandchildren, Brooke Callahan and friend Andrew Wilson, Katie Henderson and husband Anthony, Richie Callahan, Mikey Callahan and Dillon Thompson and fiancée, Kaylyn Pennington; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Meadows, Hailey Meadows, Sarah Hope Henderson, Preston Callahan and one expected in April, Anna-Lee Rose Thompson. Mrs. Wade was predeceased by a son, Rick Callahan and a sister, Mary Ann Kirby.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, December 30, 2016 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Chris Gulledge. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

James Thomas Tracy
Spartanburg, SC


Mr. James Thomas Tracy, age 89, husband of Eva Cabaniss Burgess Tracy, of 111 Sunline Place, Spartanburg, passed away Sunday December 25, 2016 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Tracy was born in Strabane, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland on October 19, 1927. At age three, he and his older brothers were placed in the Catholic Orphanage of Tremonbacca in Derry. At 12, he was sent to work on a farm. Starting in 1943, Mr. Tracy served in the Royal Navy in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters during World War II. He later moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and met and married Patricia Mary McNaughton in 1954. They immigrated to the United States, where he earned an Engineering Degree at the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He spent his career in aviation, from working on Apollo rockets to installing communications systems around the world for the US government.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Kevin Tracy and of Spartanburg, Timothy Tracy and wife Leslie of Sterling, VA, and Terry Tracy and wife Robin of Leesburg, VA; one daughter, Erin Tracy of Stone Ridge, VA; one step son, Donald Burgess and wife Sharon of Union. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Sarah Biggar and husband Hugo, Bryan Tracy and wife Melissa, Anna Tracy, Kimberly Tracy, Matthew Tracy, Caitlyn Tracy, Eileen Tracy, Rob Tracy, and Megan Tracy; and two step-grandchildren: Richard Burgess, and James Burgess; and five great-grandchildren, Mia, Aidan, Jonah, Nzuhri, and Deidre. He was predeceased by three brothers who died in military service during WWII, his first wife Patricia of 50 years and a daughter-in-law, Donna Pond Tracy.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 31, 2016 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. John Warren.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, December 30, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mildred Irene Sanders Crocker, age 93, of 220 Lawson Ave., Union, widow of Albert Crocker, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2016 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Crocker was born April 19, 1923 in Bessemer, NC a daughter of the late Roy C. Sanders and Viola Barber Sanders.  She retired from United Merchants after over 40 years.  Mrs. Crocker was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving are five daughters, Dianne Turner and husband Michael, Joan Miller and husband Bruce, Aileen C. Roberts and husband Larry, Delores Adams, and Lisa Crocker; one son, Danny R. Crocker and wife Elaine; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and beloved pets, Tom and Hop.  She was predeceased by one son, Larry Keith Crocker; four sisters, Rosa Lee Black, Peggy Henderson, Hazel Crocker, and Betty Jo Sanders; one brother, Charles Ray Sanders, Sr.; and one son-in-law, J.T. Adams.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. John Lee.  Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Woodrow Wilson Waldrop, Jr.

Mr. Woodrow Wilson Waldrop, Jr., age 71, husband of Marlene Boulware Waldrop of 214 Old English Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Waldrop was born in Union, SC on December 3, 1945 a son of the late Woodrow Wilson Waldrop, Sr. and Mildred Browning Waldrop.  He was graduate of Union High School and was a Veteran of the United States Navy.  Mr. Waldrop retired from Cone Mill—Carlisle Finishing and had previously worked with Duke Power as a welder at the Catawba Nuclear Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Beth W. Camp and husband Larry Camp, Jr. of Blacksburg and Linda Gayle Moore of Union; one sister, Elaine W. Crocker and husband Danny of Union; two brothers, Robert Waldrop and wife Mary of Buffalo and Danny Waldrop of Union; four grandchildren, Zane Moore, Jayla Moore, Kevin Scott Moore, and Jenna Alman; one great-granddaughter, Emory Alman; several nieces and nephews; and a beloved pet poodle, Nikki.  He was predeceased by one brother, Terry Waldrop.

A celebration of life service will be held at 6:00 PM Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ron Culbertson.  Visitation will be held after the services.

Mr. Waldrop’s nephews are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Barbara Jean Hughes

Miss Barbara Jean Hughes, age 84 of 107 W. South St., Union, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Heartland of Union.

Miss Hughes was born in Union, April 7, 1932, a daughter of the late Everett Holmes Hughes and Jean Sanders Hughes.  She was a graduate of Union High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Furman University. Miss Hughes was owner and operator of West Main Laundry and had also worked at the USC-Union Child Development Center.  She was an active lifelong member of First Baptist Church where she assisted in the Nursery Dept. as long as her health permitted. Miss Hughes was a member of the D.A.R., a sustaining member of the Union Co. Junior Charity League and an avid supporter of Meals on Wheels.

Surviving are a brother, Douglas H. Hughes and wife Carol of Union; several nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Kim Blackwell and husband Lynn of Jonesville and Jessica Justice and husband Nathan of Union; and many dear friends including her neighbor Kathy Stepp.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, December 26, 2016 at the First Baptist Church Chapel conducted by Rev. Ron Davis and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Lynn Blackwell, Peyton Blackwell, Jack Kelly, William Holcombe, Jim Stepp and Tommy Genoble.

Mrs. Jackie Wilburn Cody, age 79, of 312 Catawba St., Union, widow of Frank D. Cody, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at her home.
           
Mrs. Cody was born in Union, SC on October 27, 1937 a daughter of the late Fred Wilburn and Juanita Phillips Wilburn.  She was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College.  Mrs. Cody retired as bookkeeper from NAPA of Union.  She was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of Keenager Club, the Tomi Vaughan Sunday School and served on the Benevolence Committee.          

Surviving are one son, Don W. Cody and wife Donna of Union; a beloved granddaughter, Kayla Cody of Union; and several cousins including a special cousin, Melissa Phillips Gregory and husband David of Union.  She was predeceased by one brother, Phillip M. Wilburn.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tommy Vaughan.  Visitation will be immediately following the services at the cemetery.

The family wishes to extend a special “Thank you” to the staff and nurses of MediHome Hospice and members of the Tomi Vaughan Sunday School Class for their care and concern of Mrs. Cody during her illness.

Mr. Charles W. Lee, Sr., age 70 of 3439 Buffalo West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, widow of Darlene Brown Lee passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Lee was born in Union, SC on March 27, 1946 a son of the late Woodrow Lee and Ida Virginia Whitmire Lee.  He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are, one daughter, Vicki Toney and husband Rolph of Buffalo; five sons, Charles W. Lee, Jr. and wife Dovie, Michael A. Lee and wife Phyllis, Adam Christopher Lee, Clint E. Lee and wife Brooke, and Preston Jay Lee and fiancée Kauai all of Buffalo; a special friend, Brenda Lee of the home; two sisters, Susan Puckett and husband Eddie and Mary Lee Strong both of Spartanburg; three brothers, Johnny Lee of Laurens, Harley Lee of Buffalo, and Ray Lee and wife Carolyn of Buffalo; twenty eight grandchildren; and twenty nine great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by one daughter Rosemary Lee Wix and grandchild baby Lee. 

Graveside services will be 2:30 PM Monday, December 26, 2016 at Whitmire Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Timothy Bowers.

Alvin L. “Doc” Young

Mr. Alvin L. “Doc” Young, age 76, husband of Myrtis Vanderford Young of 118 S. 2nd St., Lockhart, passed away Thursday December 22, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Young was born in Chester, on May 19, 1940 a son of the late Sam and Bertha Gaston Young.  He was a graduate of Chester High School and retired from Milliken & Co.—Lockhart Plant after 30 years.  Mr. Young was a veteran of the United States Air Force and retired from the S.C. National Guard, Lockhart Unit.  He attended Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church.  Mr. Young was a 40 year Mason and a member of Lockhart Lodge No. 244.  He was a loving and devoted father and husband who always showed compassion and love to others.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years are a daughter, “Rhonda Boo” Gibson and husband Johnny of Lockhart; one brother, Robert Young of Chester; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one brother, Charles Young.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Sam Baines, Rev. Bill Vanderford, and Rev. Paul Childers.  Burial with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will follow at Lockhart Cemetery.

Melvina Ruth Bates Ellison

Mrs. Melvina Ruth Bates “Bebe” Ellison, age 82 of 296 Meansville Rd., Union, formerly of Pacolet, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at the Union Medical Center. Mrs. Ellison was the widow of Ernest “Yokum” Ellison and was first married to the late William Coleman.

She was born in Union, September 9, 1934, a daughter of the late William Emerson Bates and Fannie Mae Wix Bates. Mrs. Ellison was raised in the home of her maternal grandparents, Thomas and Mattie Vaughan. She was proud to be a member of the Steen family, whose grandfather had fought in the Revolutionary War. Mrs. Ellison attended Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include three nieces, Jackie Bates Weber and husband Bill of Union, Janet Bates Rogers of Columbia and Vera Bates Gault of Spartanburg; a special cousin, Olivia Faye Moore Henderson and her daughter Wanda Rollins and husband Chad all of Union; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, Jack Ward Bates and his wife Birdie Mae Bates and William Thomas Bates.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess.

Memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29303.

Mrs. Shirley Vinson Adams, age 67, wife of Richard E. Adams of 660 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, passed away Monday, December 19, 2016 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mrs. Adams was born in Union, SC December 28, 1948, a daughter of the late Frank E. Vinson and Frances James Vinson. She was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College. She was employed with Petroleum Distributers in Spartanburg. Mrs. Adams was a member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, the choir and served on various committees of the church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Andrew Hunter Adams and wife Christina Hope; a dear grandson, Ayden Hunter Adams; a brother, Larry F. Vinson and special friend Margaret Austin and a god-child, Maggie Grace Genoble. Mrs. Adams was predeceased by three sisters, Ruth V. Bingham, Catherine V. Robinson and Viola V. Peppers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Michael Walker and Rev. Christopher Greene. Burial will be Porter-Gallman Cemetery.

Mrs. Mabel Fowler Hyder, age 88, widow of Claude Thomas Hyder, formerly of 142 Lake Dr., Union, SC., went to be with the lord, Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. Hyder was born in Union, SC., October 21, 1928, a daughter of the late James David Fowler and Amanda Jones Fowler. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for the preschool age children. Mrs. Hyder also, attended Kelly Pickney schools.

The last surviving member of her immediate family she is survived by a son, Jeff Hyder and wife Stacey. Mrs. Hyder is predeceased by four sisters, Wilma Howell, Nettie Garner, Ann Justice and Nan Howell; and two brothers, Sonny Fowler and Dick Fowler.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Ronald Davis.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Carolyn Brown McBee, age 93, of 119 Highland Dr., Union, SC., passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 at her home.  She was the widow of William deBohun McBee.

Mrs. McBee was born in Greenville, SC., on November 8, 1923, a daughter of the late Archie Eugene Brown and Grace Williams Brown. She was attended of Sullens College, Bristol, VA and Furman University. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, and was  an active member Episcopal Church Women.  Mrs. McBee was one of the charter members of the Union Cotillion Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Louise McBee Ferguson and husband, Jim of Rock Hill; a son, William B. McBee, Jr. of the home; one granddaughter, Grace McBee Ferguson; three grandsons, James Allen Ferguson, Jr., Luther McBee Ferguson and William B. McBee, III;  and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. McBee was predeceased by two brothers, Gene Brown and Charles Brown.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday,  December 20, 2016 at the Church of the Nativity conducted by the Rev. Peggy Munice.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will follow the committal in the Parrish Hall.

Mrs. Babb was born in Union, SC, June 28, 1933 a daughter of the late James Hayward West and Pallie Bledsoe West. She was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Debra Babb and fiancé Terry Sprouse of the home, a son, Donald Babb and wife Virginia of the Putman community; a sister, Ollie Mae Brock of the Putman community; two granddaughters,  Donielle Gresham and husband Tyler of Putman; and Michelle Johnson of Buffalo; four great-grandchildren, Brandon Colt Gresham and Bristol Marie Gresham both of Putman and Emily Erwin and Christopher Todd both of Buffalo. Mrs. Babb was predeceased by a son, Carl Edward Babb.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, December 19, 2016 at the S. R. Holcombe Chapel conducted by the Rev. Chad Lawson and a guest speaker. Burial will follow at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Bobbie Ruth Adams Ford Snyder of 537 Bailey Rd., Buffalo, widow of Robert W. Ford and Harold J. Snyder went to her Heavenly home on December 15, 2016, surrounded by her family.  

Mrs. Snyder was born in Adamsburg, SC on June 9, 1931 a daughter of the late Robert S. and Thelma L. Adams.  She was a faithful member of Buffalo Baptist Church and a devoted mother. 

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy F. Youngblood and husband Steve; three sons, Tommy E. Ford and wife Judy, Rev. Robert Lynn Ford and wife April all of Buffalo and Michael W. Ford and wife Kara of Pauline; two sisters, Pearl Farr and Betty Inman; eleven grandchildren, Brad Ford, Suzette Bates, Jay Ford, Melissa Youngblood, Crystal Smith, Jenifer Bradley, Karley Ford, Kip Fleming, Kristi Scales, Kyle Ford and Katie Ford; eleven great- grandchildren, Carson Ford, Catherine Ford, Devin Bates, Caleb Austin, Reagan Ford, Samantha Hindman, Dylan Smith, Wylie Scales, James Scales, Kylyn Ford, and Logan Betenbaugh; and two great-great grandchildren, Jayci Claire Bates and Ellie Kate Bates.  She was predeceased by three sisters, Annie Laura Adams, Marian Alexander, and Mary Ann Adams and two brothers, R.S. Mrs. Barbara Lashley Bell, age 81, wife of Thomas Vance Bell of 344 River Rock Run, Union, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mrs. Bell was born in Greensboro, NC May 5, 1935, a daughter of the late Eddie Garrett Lashley and Edna Sawyer Lashley. She was co-owner of The Totem Pole and was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. Mrs. Bell was also a member of the NRA, NWTF and Women’s Outdoors. She loved to hunt, her dog C.J., hummingbirds and her flowers.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Vicki Lynn Bilka and husband Larry Bilka, Jr of Prosperity and Christi Leigh Bell of Union; a son, Thomas Vance Bell, III of Union; three grandchildren: Richard “Tripp” Owen, III of Spartanburg, Dale Knight of Union and Lisa Nicole Bell of Columbia; a great-grandson, Drue Owen of Summerville; a sister, Madeline Rhind and a brother, Eddie Garrett Lashley, Jr. both of Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Bell was predeceased by a brother, Donald Lashley.

Mr. John Patrick “Pat” Slaughter, age 70 of 109A Cogdill Plaza, Union, widower of Sara Ellen Solomon Slaughter,  passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at his home.

Mr. Slaughter was born in Bethesda, Maryland, March 15, 1946, a son of the late George and Elizabeth Dunn Slaughter. He was a graduate of Florida State University receiving a degree in Criminology and was retired from the United States Customs Office had formerly served in Law Enforcement in Garden City, GA.  Mr. Slaughter was a sergeant in the US Army having served in the Viet Nam War. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the NRA. Mr. Slaughter was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Miriam Slaughter of Columbia; two sons, Ethan D. Slaughter and Aaron Slaughter and wife Katy all of Union; a sister, Kathy Daugherty and husband Ronnie of Buffalo; four grandchildren; Domonic Slaughter and Alayah Slaughter of Charleston and Brett Owens and Sara Kathryn Slaughter of Union; a niece, Patrice Slaughter and husband Dave of Melbourne, FL; a nephew, Zach Daughtery and wife Misty of Monterey, CA and two great-nephews. Mr. Slaughter was predeceased by a sister, Jeanie Ann Slaughter.

Mr. Mack Columbus “Maxie” Reynolds, age 47 of Buffalo passed away.

Mr. Reynolds was born in Birmingham, AL August 13, 1969, a son of the late Ronald Mack Reynolds and Sylvia “Peepsi” Chambers Reynolds. He was a construction worker.

Surviving are two daughters: Karli A. Reynolds of Buffalo and Anna V. Reynolds of Jonesville; an ex-wife, Melissa Ramsey of Buffalo; a brother, Luke Rose of Union; a granddaughter that is due January 25, 2017 and a number of aunts and uncles.

Ms. Susan Marie Adams, age 46, of 201 Deepwater Rd., Union, passed away late Monday, December 12, 2016 at her home. 

Ms. Adams was born in Union, SC on October 12, 1970 a daughter of Dudley J. Adams and Hazel Brown Adams. She was a graduate of Union High School and was employed with the Union County School District as a custodian at Foster Park Elementary School.  Ms. Adams was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was very active and helped in various group activities with the church.  

Surviving in addition to her parents are one sister Tammy Adams Garner and husband Ronnie of Buffalo; one nephew, Brandon Williams of Union; two aunts, Alleen Gossett and husband Billy and Rosa Jackson and husband Ed; one uncle, James “Jabo” Brown and wife Kandy; and a number of cousins.  She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Wesley and Sarah Brown and her paternal grandparents, Lolon and Margaret G. Adams. 

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, December 16, 2016 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jeff Farmer, Rev. Dr. Tommy Vaughan, and Rev. Jimmy Harper.  Burial will follow at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Bobby Gene Stewart, age 87, of 119 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, SC, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Stewart was born in the Sedalia community of Union Co., September 16, 1929, a son of the late Willie David Stewart and Mary Bailey Stewart. He was a graduate of Cross Keys High School and was retired from Tire and Auto of Union. Mr. Stewart had formerly worked for Goodyear and Carolina Tire. He was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and was a 50 year Mason. He enjoyed playing guitar and performed often at the Buffalo Opry House and the Horseshoe. Mr. Stewart was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Shoaf and husband Tommy of Lexington, NC and Jean Young and husband Terry of Union, SC; three grandchildren; Leslie Sykes and husband David of Gilbert, SC, Stewart Young and wife Chloe of Saluda, SC and Thomas Shoaf of Lexington, NC; four great-grandchildren; a very special friend Faye Hall of Union, SC and her family, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Stewart was predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth Stewart Hunter and three brothers, Douglas Stewart, Everette Stewart and George Harry Stewart.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee. Burial will be held Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Peggy Addis Burgess, age 82, formerly of Jonesville, widow of Clyde Burgess passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Monck’s Corner Medical Center.

Mrs. Burgess was born in Jonesville, SC March 1, 1934 a daughter of the late Ernest Addis and Genevieve Belue Addis.  She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a lifelong member of Jonesville Baptist Church.  Mrs. Burgess was retired from the Union County News and had previously worked at the Union Daily Times.  She was a former member of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Gunter and husband Rick of Charleston; one granddaughter, Noelle Molnar and husband Stevie of Albany, GA; one grandson, Gabriel Gunter of Charleston; two great-grandsons, Stephen and Camden Molnar of Albany, GA.  She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters. 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown.  Burial will follow at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Thomas Lewis Simmons, Sr., age 72, husband of Donna Carter Simmons of 300 S Main Street, Jonesville, passed away Friday, December 9, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Simmons was born in Spartanburg, SC December 13, 1943, a son of the late Lewis Mack Simmons and Nancy Sturgill Simmons.  He had attended Spartanburg Technical College; retired from Kohler Company and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons: Thomas Lewis Simmons, Jr and wife Angie of Union; Todd Simmons and wife Pam of Spartanburg, Nick Simmons and wife Bethany and Matt Simmons and fiancée Corina all of Jonesville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and special friends, Doc and Nancy Lipsey and Debbie Guy. 

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, December 12, 2016 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Dawkins was born in Union, September 13, 1980, a daughter of Catharine and Robert Dawkins and Victor Dawkins. She was formerly employed with Kangaroo Express in Monarch.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter, Dacey Sumner of the home; a sister, Sara Dawkins; a brother, Robert Bradley Dawkins; her mother-in-law, Barbara Ann Hendrix; a niece, Myra Lynn and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins including a special cousin, Bruce Magner. She was predeceased by a daughter, Paisley Sierra Knox.

Mrs. Nancy J. Johnson Hill, age 63, of 536 Vanderford Rd., Union, passed gently into God’s care on Tuesday, December 6, 2016.

Mrs. Hill was born on August 21, 1953 in Union, SC, the daughter of the late Everode L. Johnson and Katie Vaughan Johnson. She worked for Timken Company until her retirement in 2009. She was a devout member of Philippi Baptist Church, where she served as the Church Pianist for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Jerome R. Hill of the home and her sister, Teresa S. Vanderford and husband Keith of Union, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Brian Redding. Visitation will be held prior to the services from 1:00 until 2:45 PM at the church.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. James Michael “Doughboy” Lanier, age 51 husband of Leslie Watkins Lanier of 144 Pine St., Buffalo, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lanier was born in El Paso, TX June 9, 1965 a son of the late Bobbie Simpson Lanier and Lois Jean Bright Lanier.  He was employed with Humphries Heating and Air.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one nephew, Michael Watkins, of Greenville; one sister-in-law, Sara Lanier of Woodruff; three sisters Carolyn Thomas, Robin Palmer, and Karen Lanier all of Union; a brother, Gerald Lanier; two nieces, Shannon Silvey and April Trammell both of Union; and his best friend, Frank Humphries.  He was predeceased by a brother, Randy Lanier and his beloved dog, Hoppy.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Union, May 17, 1920, a daughter of the late Joseph Layton Lamb and Mary Ellen Lee Lamb. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from John Graham Stores, Graham Cash.  Mrs. Gregory was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Sidney Harold “Hal” Gregory and wife Priscilla of Fort Lawn; one brother, Ralph Lamb of Charleston and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lamb was predeceased by four sisters, Willie Mae Lancaster, Carrie Lee Lancaster, Kathleen Pruitt and Hazel Bennett; and two brothers, Layton Wilson Lamb and J. Harold Lamb.

Mrs. Hogan was born in Gaffney, SC on June 16, 1946 a daughter of the late John Claude Wright and Millie Virginia Peeler Wright.  She was a retired textile worker and was formerly employed at the Mini Mart in Jonesville.  Mrs. Hogan was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Surviving are four daughters, Connie Smith and husband James, Janet Hogan and husband Ronald, Ann Shetley and husband Timothy and Linda Parkins and husband Matt all of Union; one son, Donnie Bruce Hogan, Jr. and wife Janie of Union; thirteen grandchildren several whom she raised and numerous great-grandchildren; five sisters and one brother.  She was predeceased by one son, Donald Bruce Hogan.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Darrell Hogan.  Visitation will be immediately following the services at the Cemetery.

The family is the home of her grandson, Jeremy Shoe, 3207 Buffalo West Springs Highway, Buffalo, SC 29321.
