Rita Russell Fletcher

Mrs. Rita Russell Fletcher, age 63, of 324 Haney Cemetery Road, widow of Arthur Daniel Fletcher, went to be with the Lord Monday, December 30, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Fletcher was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on July 21, 1950, a daughter of the late Burnett and Gertrude Cabaniss Russell. She was a graduate of W.T. Woodson High School, George Mason University and Winthrop College, where she received her masters. Mrs. Fletcher was a faithful member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church, where she served for many years as church pianist and also taught Sunday School. She was retired from the Union County School District as a Teacher.

Surviving are a sister, Sherry Large and husband Larry of Stafford, VA; two nieces, Farrah Large of Stafford, VA and Morgan Large of Fredericksburg, VA; a great-nephew, Nate Stewart, of Stafford, VA; a special friend, Debbie Carrico, of Union; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Patricia Ann Jennings
Union, SC


Mrs. Patricia Ann Burnett Jennings, age 69, wife of Al Jennings, Jr. of 201 Second Avenue, Union, passed away Monday, December 30, 2013.

Mrs. Jennings was born in Union, SC October 27, 1944, a daughter of the late Frank Burnett and Dolly Blanton Burnett. She was a retired textile worker.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: Ricky O’Shields and wife Teresa of Union and Darrell O’Shields and wife Stacie of Cowpens; a sister, Brenda Hawkins of Union; three grandchildren: Morgan and Blake O’Shields both of Union and Natosha Pack of North Carolina. Mrs. Jennings was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Burnett and Johnny Burnett.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, January 2, 2014 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Rick Cook and Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Blake O’Shields, Chad Lawter, Christopher Walton, Chuck Lee, Joe Lawter, Tony Groves, Jeff Groves and Jerry Walton.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Polly Ann McGee
Union, SC


Mrs. Polly Ann McAbee McGee, age 66 of 120 Hillcrest Drive, Union, SC passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at her home after an extended illness. Mrs. McGee was the widow of Roger Wayne McGee.

Mrs. McGee was born in Union, SC March 1, 1947, a daughter of the late Paul Lee McAbee and Agnes Corinne “Betty” Wilburn McAbee. She was a 1965 graduate of Union High School and had attended Winthrop College. Mrs. McGee retired from the Dialysis Clinic, Inc in Union and was the former organist and pianist at Carlisle Baptist Church until the church dissolved. She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church and was an avid Gamecock Club Member and fan.

Surviving are a daughter, Laura Michelle McGee Young and husband Daniel of the home; two sons: Robert Wayne McGee and wife Amy of Union and Paul Rodgers McGee and wife Jamie of Lexington; a sister, Ramona Wilburn Franks and husband Charles of Simpsonville; eight grandchildren: Cathryn Amanda Young, Ryan Edward Young, Robert Andrew McGee, Sarah Elizabeth McGee, Roger Wayne McGee and Meghan Elizabeth McGee and many beloved nieces and newphews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 3, 2014 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Rick Gunter. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Current and former Dialysis Clinic’s employees are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Kathy Elaine Inman Ingle, age 60, wife of Ronald Dean Ingle of 108 Haskell Street, Union, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Ingle was born in Union, SC March 27, 1953, a daughter of the late Ernest Inman, Sr. and Laura Jeanette Vinson Inman. She was a member of Skull Shoals Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Sandra Rodriguez and Julie Kimbrough of CA; five sons: Tim Ingle and wife Bonnie of Union, Kenneth Ingle, Jonathan Ingle, Franklin Ingle and Bobby Ingle all of CA; four sisters: Laura Bradburn of Union, Alma Durham of Pacolet, Alice Smith and Gail Bradburn both of Gaffney; three brothers: Ernest Inman, Jr of Union, Alan Inman of Spartanburg and Larry Inman of Chesnee and  a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, January 2, 2014 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Roy Lowe. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 12:30-1:45 PM Thursday in the chapel prior to the service.

Timothy “Tim” Gault, Sr.
Union, SC


Mr. Timothy Dean “Tim” Gault, Sr, age 51, husband of Cherie Hedden Gault of 105 Vinson Drive, Union, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Gault was born in New Jersey February 24, 1962, a son of the late William J. Gault, Sr and Peggy Cabiness Gault. He was a member of Covenant Baptist Church and was a former Certified Nursing Assistant and a former truck driver.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Leah Gault of Lincolnton, GA; a son, Timothy “TJ” Gault, Jr of Union; a sister, Paulretta Rutledge of Union; a brother, Michael Gault and wife Bernice; three grandchildren: Kensley Gault, Nicolette Brown both of Union and Kesley Gault of Greenville; father-in-law, Lynn Crow and mother-in-law, Sybil Crow both of Union and a special nephew, Malachi Gibson. Mr. Gault was predeceased by a sister, Tina Hart and a brother, William J. “Billy”Gault, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Donald Jack Rector, Sr.

Mr. Donald Jack Rector, Sr., age 76, husband of Carol Scott Rector of 443 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Oakmont of Union.

Mr. Rector was born in Union, August 2, 1937, a son of the late Otis and Bertha Sprouse Rector. He was a 1955 graduate of Union High School and retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant. Mr. Rector was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Club of the church and he was also was a member of the Carlisle Finishing Retirement Group. Mr. Rector was a veteran of the US Air Force.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Jo Rector Hucks of Dahlonega, GA and her fiancee, Dale Woods of Lyons, GA; two sons, Donald Jack Rector, Jr. and wife Wendy of Union and John Charles Rector and wife Elena of Falls Church, VA; three brothers, Bobby Rector and wife Peggy of Summerville, Edward Rector and wife Delaine of Kennansville, NC and Jim Rector and wife Susan of Union; a sister-in-law, Jean Rector of Coushatta, LA; seven grandchildren, Kristen Gipson and husband Wesley, Kathryn Hucks, Kevin Hucks, Kenneth Hucks, Jay Rector, Eli Rector, and Marina Carol Rector; and one great-grandson, Parker Gipson.

Mr. Rector was predeceased by a brother, Otis Rector, Jr.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz and Rev. Shannon Faulkner. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

John Henry Porter

Mr. John Henry Porter, age 80, husband of Edna Williams Porter of 60 years, passed away Friday, December 27, 2013 at his home, 4057 Mt. Pleasant Church Rd., Chester.

Mr. Porter was born in Union Co., September 6, 1933, a son of the late John H. Porter and Nannie Robbins Porter. He retired from Matthews Construction Co. and was also a truck driver. Mr. Porter was a veteran of the US Army and a member of Wilksburg Baptist Church. He also was an ordained minister and much loved by his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Debra Gregory and husband Gerald of Lockhart, Sandra Britton and husband Steve and Wanda Church and husband Larry all of Chester; five sisters, Mary Jo Ivey, Jean Harris, Patricia Enix, Linda Stephenson, and Peggy Henderson all of Chester; one brother, James Porter of Chester; nine grandchildren, Barbara Millwood, Angie Weir, Melissa Mobley, Brandi Lanier, Kim Meloy, Stacy Mauney, Adam Church, Jamie Shrader and Eric Church and 19 great-grandchildren; special friends, Connie Parker and wife Penny of Florida. Mr. Porter was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Brunet.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, December 30, 2013 at Wilksburg Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Sean Sellars and Rev. Andy Logan. Burial with Military Honors will be in the church cemetery.

Harold Wayne Coleman

Mr. Harold Wayne “Tad” Coleman, age 74, husband of Linda Wilson Coleman of 1109 Linersville Rd., Buffalo went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 27, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Coleman was born March 13, 1939, a son of the late Will Coleman and Gertrude Coleman. He was a member of the Greater Union Church and was a Veteran of the US Air Force. Mr. Coleman was a valued employee of Holcombe Funeral Home.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Rev. Roger Estes and his wife Debbie of Union; two daughters: Dinah Cody and husband Philip of Spartanburg and Cheryl Jenkins and husband Ricky of Union; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Brenda Wells and husband Stanley of Buffalo and a brother, Michael “Tiny” Coleman and his wife Ann of Duncan.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Greater Union Church conducted by Rev. Dr. John Cody and Rev. Bob Redman. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Linda Mae Fox Wilbanks

Mrs. Linda Mae Fox Wilbanks, age 70, widow of Doug Wilbanks formerly of Union, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Fairfield Healthcare of Laurel Baye in Ridgeway.

Mrs. Wilbanks was born in Union, March 10, 1943, a daughter of the late Ralph and Annie Lou Fox.  She retired from Milliken and Co., Ottaray Plant and was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Cooper of Greenville; five sons, Eddie Wilbanks and wife Susan of Lexington, KY, James Wilbanks of Columbia, Calvin Wilbanks and Lonnie Wilbanks both of Lockhart and Ralph Wilbanks of Florida; two sisters, Carolyn Hewitt and husband Moe and Jeanette Gibson and husband Roy; two brothers Tony Fox and wife Brenda all of North Carolina and Joe Fox of Lockhart; and nine grandchildren.

The family will schedule a memorial service for a later date.

Ms. Ileana Marie Pettit, age 55 of 1942 Santuc Carlisle Hwy, Union, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Ms. Pettit was born in Gross Point, MI, September 3, 1958, a daughter of the late Wesley Charles Pettit and Mary Margaret Curjus Pettit. She was a graduate of Lakeview High School in St Claire Shores, MI and was formerly employed with Ace Sweater. Ms. Pettit was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving are three brothers, Ronald Pettit of Union, Andy Pettit and wife Elaine of Union and Jack Pettit of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; two nieces and four nephews.

A Memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 Nichols Avenue, Union,  conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the service.

Mr. Toby Wayne Knox, age 71, husband of Treaky Williamson Knox of 1211 S. Pinckney St., Union, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Knox was born in Cherokee Co., June 20, 1942, a son of the late Black and Lillie Garner Knox. He was retired from textiles and had formerly worked as a carrier with the Union Daily Times. Mr. Knox was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sissy Knox of Union; an “adopted” daughter, Faith Lemons of Union; two sons, Danny Wayne Knox and wife Karen of Jonesville and Todd Knox of Union; two sisters, Betty Jean Cagel and Helen Puckett both of Union; two brothers, Pete Knox of Lockhart and Broadus Knox of Woodruff; four grandchildren, Kristen Stewart and husband Frankie, Brandon Knox, Noah Hendrix and Anna-Louise Knox; and one great-grandson, Bentley Brey Stewart.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 20, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Kip Vinson and Chaplain Vernon Thornhill.

Visitation will be from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family wishes to thank Hospice Care of South Carolina, especially Pam Phipps, Sandy Ivey and Joey Conard for their care of Mr. Knox during his illness.

Jessie J. McLure
Union, S.C.


Mrs. Jessie Justice McLure, age 77, widow of John William McLure, Jr., of 361 Kelly Rd., Union, passed away Monday, December 16, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. McLure was born in Union, October 4, 1936, a daughter of the late Milas Bryant Justice and Mary Elizabeth Franklin Justice. She had formerly worked for Clapat Industries and Executive Knits in Union and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mrs. McLure was a faithful donator to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital and also contributed to other charitable organizations.

Surviving are four daughters, Grace Pryor and husband Jimmy and Kathy Lancaster all of Spartanburg, Patricia Adams of Union and Sarah Longshore and husband Ricky of Gaffney; one son, Alden Dorsey McLure of Union; two sisters, Bernice Falls and Alma Justice both of Union; 9 grandchildren, Tiffany Hall, Amanda Garrett, David Garrett, William Eugene Adams, Richard Jason Adams and wife Keri, Katherine Chambers and husband Elliott, Jessica Longshore, Courtney Longshore and Ricky Longshore, Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. McLure was predeceased by 2 sons, James Windsor McLure and Dennis Lancaster, 6 sisters and 4 brothers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, December 20, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home conducted by President Jay Larson and Mr. Ron Webber. Burial will be at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity Cemetery.

Mrs. McLure’s sons and grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family wishes to thank Blue Ridge Hospice, especially Lindsey, Stacey, and Sierra for their care and concern of Mrs. McLure during her illness.

Carolyn Brown
Pacolet, SC


Miss Carolyn Brown, 91, of 6820 South Pine St., Pacolet, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013 at her home.

She was born in Pacolet on March 1, 1922, a daughter of the late B.F. and Ruth White Brown.

Miss Brown graduated from Limestone College in 1943 with a degree in home economics and went to work at Camp Croft as manager of the officer’s training club. She began her career in education with a job teaching science at Union High in 1950. She later transferred to Kelly-Pinckney High School and remained there until the school closed in 1971. She transferred to Jonesville Elementary where she taught until 1984. She continued to volunteer, visit and substitute teach at the school until recently.

Several years ago, Miss Brown was honored by the Union County Chamber of Commerce for her volunteerism. During a meeting for teachers at the opening of the school year in August of 2012, she was given the first “Carolyn Brown Extra Mile Award,” for going beyond the call of duty for the students.

She was a member of Friends of Faith Baptist Church in Pacolet.
Survivors include her brother, Robert W. “Bobby” Brown Sr. of Union and his wife, Eugenia; a sister-in-law, Barbara Brown of Pacolet; her nieces and nephews, Freddie Bailey and wife, Linda, of Decatur, Ga.; Amy Satterfield and her husband, Mark, of Fort Mill; Randy Brown and his wife, Pam, of Boiling Springs; Robert W. Brown Jr. and wife, Anna, Benjy Brown and his wife, Jennifer and Richard Brown and his wife, Jennifer, all of Union; In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy “Dot” Brown Bailey and brother, John R. “Pete” Brown.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, December 19, 2013 at First Baptist Church Pacolet conducted by the Rev. Bill Jones. Burial will follow at Goucher Baptist Church Cemetery, Cherokee Co.

Visitation will held 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM prior to the services at the church.

Mr. Ralph E. Cody, age 64, of 105 Scarborough Dr., Union, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Cody was born in Union, October 7, 1949, a son of the late J.T. Cody and Lillie Mae Malone Cody.  He was a 1969 graduate of Union High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Cody was retired from the U.S. Air Force and had received as Associates degree in Aviation Management from the Community College of the Air Force.

Surviving are a son, Robert F. Cody of Louisiana; four brothers, William David Cody and wife Ann with whom he made his home, Jack E. Cody of Santuc, Robert L. Cody and wife Cille of Union and John T. Cody of Alabama; three grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  Mr. Cody was predeceased by a daughter, Allicia D. Cody; two sisters, Martha Mae Cody and Peggy Ann Trammell and by two brothers, James H. Cody and Donald C. Cody.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at First Baptist Church Chapel conducted by Rev. Rick Pendleton. Burial with Full Military Honors will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Brian Cody, Bobby Hicks, Thad Strom, Torrence Inman, John Gibson and Tyler Morton.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Evelyn F. Mabry

Mrs. Evelyn Fay Foster Mabry, age 91, widow of Erby G. Mabry, Jr., passed away December 15, 2013 at Windsor House in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Mabry was born in Union, December 15, 1922, a daughter of the late Luther E. Foster and Beulah S. Foster.  She retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and was a member of Salem Baptist Church since 1952.  Mrs. Mabry was the last surviving member of her immediately family.

Surviving are a son, Bill Mabry of Union; two granddaughters, Cathy Freeman and husband Rev. Josh Freeman of Union and Karen Mabry of Las Cruces, NM; two great-granddaughters, Abbey and Aryn Freeman and a number of nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Mabry was predeceased by a sister, Irene Foster and a brother, Lee Foster.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Wayne Cooke and Rev. Jerry Ford.  Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Wednesday at the chapel prior to the services.

Active pallbearers will be Evans Crocker, Jimmy Crocker, Ellis Jenkins, Rev. Josh Freeman, Tim Palmer and Kenny Proctor.  Mr. Malcolm Gregory and the staff and nurses of the Windsor House are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Nathalee Garner Comer, age 87, widow of Jesse Gilbert Comer, formerly of 407 South Boyce St.,Union, SC., went to be with the Lord, Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Hendersonville, NC.

Mrs. Comer was born in Union, SC., February 13, 1926, a daughter of the late Davis Roy and Bessie Adams Garner. She was a graduate of Kelly Pickney High School and retired from the Milliken Company after over 30 years of service. Mrs. Comer was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and loved her family. She also loved the study of genealogy and was proud of her Pea Ridge roots.

Surviving are two sons: Leonard Comer and wife, Gayle of Simpsonville, and Carroll Comer of Columbia; two sisters: Betty Harvey of Jonesville and Patsy Garner of Columbia; a dearly loved granddaughter and grandson: Elizabeth Johns and husband Steve of Fountain Inn and James Comer and wife Lindsey of Iowa; four great-grandchildren and numerous Nieces and nephews. Mrs. Comer was predeceased by four sisters and five brothers: Thelma Thrasher, Margaret Howell, Lou Jean Knox and Joyce Blakely, Everette Garner, Leonard Garner, Wilbur Garner, Donald Garner and Hershel Garner.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, December 16, 2013 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Robert Chapman.

Visitation will follow immediately after the graveside service.

Mr. James Edward Allen, age 72, husband of Patsy Burnett Allen of 413 Old Buncombe Rd., Union, SC., passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Allen was born in Chester County, December 6, 1941, a son of the late Robert E. Allen and Hazel Owens Allen. He was a graduate of Cincinnati College of Funeral Service, and formerly worked as a licensed funeral director at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home in Greenville and the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Mr. Allen had also been employed with the City of Union Water Works and had retired from Spartanburg Water Works. He was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church, the Cross Anchor Masonic Lodge 262, and was a former member of the SC National Guard.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Jeff A. Allen and wife Jennifer and Jason B. Allen and wife Dawn all of Union; three grandchildren, Levi, Elizabeth, and Noah Allen. Mr. Allen was predeceased by a brother, Robert Timothy Allen.

Mr. James Walter Ford, age 93, husband of Ruby Maness Ford, of 148 Pine Street, Buffalo, passed away, Friday, December 13, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Ford was born November 1, 1920 in Cosby, TN, a son of the late John Tipton and Sara Nettie Greene Ford. He was a retired Supervisor with United Merchants – Buffalo Plant. Mr. Ford was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp having served in World War II. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. Mr. Ford had been a member of the Duncan Masonic Lodge 256 for 66 years and was a former member of the Buffalo Redmen Tribe.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 66 years, Ruby Maness Ford, are a daughter Cynthia Ford Langley and husband Dennis of Union; a granddaughter, Dr. Katherine Langley Cash and husband Garrett of Morgantown, West Virginia; a grandson, Michael Dennis Langley and wife Ashley of Greenville, SC; a special sister-in-law, Miss Valice Maness of Buffalo; and a number of nieces and nephews. The last surviving member of his immediate family, Mr. Ford was predeceased by, five sisters, Della Willard, Nancy Martin, Jenny V. Byrd, Sophia Goins, and Mary Etta Ford and three brothers, D.A. Ford, Hubert Ford, and John Henry Ford.

Graveside services with Military Honors and Masonic Rites, will be held 1:00 PM, Monday, December 16, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Lynn Ford and his nephew, Mr. Jimmy Maness. Following the committal service, the family will be at the home of his niece, Linda and Jack Kelly, 113 W. South Street, Union, SC.

Mr. Aubrey Talmadge Noland, age 81 of Charotte, NC, widower of Ann Hodge Noland, passed away Friday, December 13, 2013 at White Oak of Charlotte.

Mr. Noland was born in Union, SC August 8, 1932, a son of the late Claude and Lena Noland . A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he graduated from Wofford College summa cum laude in 1952. He retired from Monsanto in 1985 after a lifelong career in the textile industry.

Surviving are two daughters: Talmadge Noland Stringer and husband Mark of Cary and Teresa Noland Dickens and husband Leonidas of Fayetteville; a son, Timothy Wayne Noland of Charlotte; grandchildren: Jacqueline Noland Stokes and her husband Bynum, Ann Lillian Dickens, Corey Lynn Stringer, Teresa Caroline Dickens and William Parker Noland.
Graveside services will be held 2:30 PM Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Donald O’Dell.

Mrs. Smith was born in Hickory Grove, SC November 18, 1944, a daughter of the late James Herschell Hardin and Ella Belle Moss Hardin. She was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School and retired from Parragon Plastics in Union after twenty-two years of service. Mrs. Smith attended New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Reginia Faulkenberry and husband Ronnie of Hickory Grove, Pamela Arrowood and husband Dennis of Whitmire and Sandra Toomey of the home; a son, Robert Smith and wife Kim of Buffalo; two sisters: Christine Hardin of Hickory Grove and Peggy Gaston of Chester; a brother, William “Shorty” Hardin of Hickory Grove; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. White was born in Union, SC May 18, 1929, a daughter of the late Frank Smith and Bessie Edwards Smith. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the  Union County School District. Mrs. White was a faithful and active member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Faith Circle and the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are a daughter, Beth Cudd and husband Buddy Cudd, Jr.of Union; a son, Michael White and wife Linda of Houston, TX; four grandchildren: Leah Robinson of Union, Megan Cudd of Greenwood, Angi Miller of Houston, TX and Andrea Self of Loveland, OH; three great-grandchildren: Lexi Robinson of Union, Josh Miller and Zach Miller both  of Houston, TX: four sisters: Ruth Parks, Lousie Price both of Union, Betty Groce of Spartanburg and Jo Ann Sweatt of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. White was predeceased by a sister, Neely Lawter and a brother,  Frank Smith.

Mrs. Nancy Hurd Tate, age 78, formerly of Whitmire, passed away Monday, December 9, 2013 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. Tate was born in Virginia July 11, 1935, a daughter of the late Floyd Hurd and Rhoda Hurd. She retired from Cone Mills and was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church in Whitmire.

Surviving are a sister, Gladys Hurd of Virginia; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Sandra Roller, Polly Brank and Darla Garner. Mrs. Tate was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.

Mr. Henry Irving “Papa Henry” Vaughan, age 90, of 114 Spruce St., Union, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013 at his home. Mr. Vaughan was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Grace Elizabeth Sanders Vaughan.

Born in Union, October 13, 1923, he was the only son of the late Irving and Mae Kirby Vaughan. He was a graduate of Union High School and a veteran of the US Army having served in the European Theater during WWII. Mr. Vaughan was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He retired from the US Postal Service after a 45 year career.

Mr. Vaughan was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir, a Deacon, a Sunday School teacher and served as treasurer of the Keenagers Club. Active in his community, he was a life-member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75, the V.F.W., the American Legion and Woodman of the World.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley V. Lawson of Fletcher, NC; two sons, Terry W. Vaughan, Sr. and wife Jean, and David S. Vaughan, Sr. and wife Ollie all of Union; a dear cousin who was more like a sister, Helen Grady of Union; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Vaughan’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Mr. Augustus Hugh Harmon, Jr., age 92, husband of Virginia Billings Harmon, died Friday, December 6, 2013.

Mr. Harmon was born January 10, 1921 in Jonesville, SC, a son of the late Augustus H. Harmon, Sr. And Annie Mae Plexico Harmon. He was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and a veteran of the US Army, having served in WWII. Mr. Harmon was a graduate of Jonesville High School, employed with the Ford Motor Company and a member of the Buffalo Post American Legion.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Donna H. Frye and husband, Douglas of Charlotte,  NC.; and a sister: Ruby Ferverda of Landrum. Mr. Harmon was predeceased by three sisters:  Sarah Harmon, Kathleen Grillo, Blanche James and two brothers:  Jimmy Harmon and Erwin Harmon.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, December 9, 2013 at Buffalo United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ron Towery. Burial will be at New Hope United Methodist Church with Military Honors.

He is survived by his parents, father, Richard Gregory and wife Vickie of Union, and his mother, Nancy West Brewington and husband Rickie. Surviving in addition to his parents and step-parents are a son, Austin Gregory and a daughter Macie Gregory both of Union; his grandparents, Hugh and June Gregory of Lockhart; his great-grandmother, Frances Griffith of Fountain Inn, SC; a brother, Richie Gregory and friend Stacy of Lockhart; and several aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by a sister, Ronda Ann Gregory.

Mr. Sizemore was born in Hazard, Kentucky November 30, 1949, a son of the late William Kermit Sizemore and Velvia Collins Secoulas. He was a retired construction worker.

Mrs. Dora Davis Scoggins, age 88 of 1961 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Pauline, widow of Roy Scoggins, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Scoggins was first married to the late Ralph Davis.

Mrs. Scoggins was born August 10, 1925, a daughter of the late Lee Smith and Clara Alexander Smith. She was a former hostess for the Fairforest Hotel and retired from Fencher’s Resturant. Mrs. Scoggins was a member of Union Church of God where she had been a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class but had been attending Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Trudy Rhinehart and husband Paul of Union; a son, Larry Davis and wife Becky of Buffalo; two sisters: Louise Guyton of Union and Shirley Vanderford and husband JB of Cross Hill; eight grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren and fifteen great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Scoggins was predeceased by two sisters: Maude Black and Pearl Hunt.

Mrs. Mary Crocker Harvey, wife of James C. “Buddy” Harvey of 210 Briarwood Drive, Pacolet, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Harvey was born in Jonesville, SC April 24, 1941, a daughter of the late Charlie O’Dell Crocker and Evelyn Haile Crocker. She retired from Spartanburg County School System, District 3 after thirty-one years of service. Mrs. Harvey was a member of Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Haila Harvey Adams; a son, Donald Christopher Harvey both of Pacolet; a granddaughter, Autumn Jade Adams; two grandsons: Joseph Charner Adams and Creed Harvey; two step-grandchildren: Katey Marie Godfrey and Travis Lynn Godfrey.

Mrs. Turner was born in Fayetville, NC, March 23, 1943, a daughter of the late Glenn and Dorothy Thomas Autry.

She is survived by a daughter, Holly Brooke of Pauline; a son, Phillip Turner; two sisters, Jean Peterson of Greensboro and Rhonda Duffer of Fayetville. She was predeceased by two brothers, Bill and Raymond Autry and her dear friend, Richard Dunham.

Mr. Haney was born in Buffalo, June 2, 1936, a son of the late Roy and Sallie King Haney. He was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and was an avid coon hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are two sisters, Carolyn Haney of the home and Juanita H. Turner and husband Wayne of Buffalo; nieces and nephews, Tammie Haney, Priscilla Kingsmore, Tracey Bevis, Roger Turner, Scott Turner, Travis Kingsmore, Amanda Bobo and Kevin Haney and several other great nieces and nephews. Mr. Haney was predeceased by a sister, Ruby H. Vinson.

Mr. Ernest Dwight Richardson, age 78, husband of 56 years to Jean Lyles Richardson of 120 Belvue Dr., Union, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Richardson was born in Marion Co., March 31, 1935, a son of the late Eulee Cook Richardson and Ernest Stafford Richardson and wife Eula Mae Cannon Richardson. He was 1954 graduate of Britton’s Neck High School in Marion Co. and completed Communications School for Norfolk Southern Railroad. Mr. Richardson finished Clemson College in 1960 with a BS degree in Agricultural Science. After completing school, he taught Vocational Agricultural Education in Calhoun Falls for 3 years. Mr. Richardson was then employed with the US Dept of Agriculture where he retired after 30 years service and settled his family in Union in 1970.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and also on various committees within the church. He was a former member of the Lions Club and had participated in several associations related to his job.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Dr. Wanda Richardson All and husband Bill, and Diane Richardson Drum and husband Terry all of Union; a son, Ryan Alan Richardson and wife Becky of Lexington; three sisters, Elwood R. Matthews, Doris R. Page, and Faye R. Neel; two brothers, Earl M. Richardson and Lloyd Lee Richardson; 8 grandchildren, William D. All, III, Margaret E. All, Sarah M. All, Todd Drum, Barclay D. Arciniega, Rebecca D. Stanley and husband, Cole, Colin Drake Richardson and Alex Ficher Richardson; and one great-grandson, Jack Arciniega. Mr. Richardson was predeceased by a brother, Harris Richardson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rick Pendleton and Rev. Dr. Allen Raines.

Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Alex Richardson, Willie All, Cole Stanley, Virgil Childers, Bobby Hicks, and Jeff Stepp.

The following are asked to assemble at the church by 1:45 PM Wednesday to form the honorary escort, Walter Chandler, Warren Chandler, Greg Harbert, Hank Lyles, Tyrone Lyles, Alan Richardson, Buddy Richardson, Kent Richardson, Tommy Soles, Mike Tompkins, William Tompkins, W.C. Bennett, John Brown, Paul Davis, Walt Garner, Bill Hickson, Doug Lawing, Hubert Sanders and Thad Strom.

Visitation will be held at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the services on Wednesday.

Mrs. Sarah Ann “Sally” Shelton, age 73, wife of Charles T. Shelton of 973 Main St., Buffalo, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Shelton was born in Michigan, December 24, 1939 and was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church in Buffalo. She was first married to the late Gordon Eugene Nelson.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four sons, John Eugene Nelson and wife Kathy of Comstock, MI, Richard Lee Nelson and wife Lydia of West Columbia, Michael Ray Nelson and wife Dinna of Los Angeles, CA and Steven Walter Nelson and wife Jan of Raleigh, NC; a daughter, Dawn Marie Nelson Gray and husband Walter of Pomaria; two sisters, Mona Smith and husband Ron of Kalamazoo, MI and Mary Pettit of Comstock, MI; one brother, Fred Baker of New York; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Shelton’s sons and grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
