Benjamin Burnett, Jr.

Mr. Benjamin Burnett, Jr., age 53, husband of Althea Gilliam Burnett of 124 Bishop Place, Union, SC, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Self Regional in Greenwood. He was originally of Reidville, SC.

Mr. Burnett was born in Greer, SC October 26, 1961, a son of the late Benjamin Burnett, Sr. and Kathleen Mitchem Burnett. He was a graduate of Byrnes High School and was employed with Henderson’s Plumbing. Mr. Burnett attended Morningside Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Christy Burnett Hill and husband Brandon of Lyman and Brittany Burnett of TN; two sisters: Vicki Burnett Sanders and husband Ray of Union, Kathy Burnett Tucker of Duncan; three brothers: Luther McSwain Burnett and wife Joan of Duncan, Jerry Burnett and wife Linda of Union and Edward Burnett of Reidville; four grandchildren: Hannah and Gabriel Hill and Trevor and Shawn Aaron Burnett; four step-children: Scarlet Sherbert, Hailey Sherbert, Jonathan Sherbert and Sean Cartee; two step-grandchildren: Ashton and Hunter and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Aubrey Calvert, Mr. Bill Randall and Mr. Ben Ivey. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Phil Woods, Jesse Robinson, Jason McAbee, Tony Huitt, Jimmy Lawson and Scott Sanders. The employees of Henderson Plumbing are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:30 PM Monday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Vicki and Ray Sanders, 201 Stutts Avenue, Union.


Franklin Delano Brown
Union, SC


Mr. Franklin Delano Brown, age 78, husband of Frances Greer Brown of 200 Lover’s Hill Rd., Union, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mr. Brown was born in Charlotte, NC September 8, 1936, a son of the late Garfield Brown and Anna Mullen Brown. He was a graduate of North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC and retired from the US Postal Service in Charlotte, NC.  He was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church and was also a member of the South Carolina Deaf Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Brian J. Brown of Iron Mountain, MI and Charles T. Brown of Chester; a step-daughter, Susan A. Hanvey and husband Randy “Chump” of Union; a step-son, William “Jeff” Brockman and wife Cyndi of Pauline; a brother, Thomas Brown of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Memorial services are being planned for a later date and will be announced later by the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the S.C. School for the Deaf Alumni Association, P.O. Box 6523, Spartanburg, SC 29304.

Rose Mary O’Shields

Mrs. Rose Mary O’Shields, age 62 of 203 C Street, Jonesville, SC 29353, passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. O’Shields was born in Union, SC June 6, 1953 a daughter of the late Oscar Bogan and Betty Lou Clark Bogan. She attended Jonesville High School and Jonesville Church of God.

Surviving are a son, Michael Ivey of Nashville, TN; two sisters, Janet Bogan of the home and Pam Vinson and husband Tim of Lexington, SC; two grandchildren, Jessie and Zach; a nephew Scott Bogan and wife Chelsea of Pelzer; a niece Crystal Bogan of Pelzer; a sister-in-law Donna Powell of Pelzer; a special pet dog, Angel; and a number of aunts, uncles, and friends.  She is predeceased by a brother Timothy Scott Bogan, Sr.  The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Spartanburg Regional Hospice and Beth Broom for their love and care of Mrs. O’Shields.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by the Rev. Roger Byrd.  Burial will follow at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Geraldine Fleming Mitchell
Pacolet, SC


Mrs. Geraldine Fleming Mitchell, age 84, wife of Frank Mitchell of 451 Zion Church Rd., Pacolet, SC, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, August 28, 2015 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Pacolet, SC October 19, 1930, a daughter of the late Vernon “Bunch” Fleming and Bertha Parker “Ma-Bert” Fleming. She was retired from Milliken & Co and was a member of Riding for Jesus Cowboy Church. Mrs. Mitchell was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Kay Morgan and husband Randall; two sons: Bobby Guyton and wife Christy and Gene Guyton; eight grandchildren: Mitch Trammel and wife Tracy, Jay Scott Trammel, Alisa Guyton Parsons, Brooks Guyton, Lindsey Guyton Yelverton, Lauren Guyton Blanton, Kristy Morgan Taylor and Heather Morgan Cushman; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Peggy Fleming “Sissy” Padgett. Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by a daughter, Trina Gayle Mitchell; a son, John Paul Guyton, Jr; a sister, Phillis Fleming Youngblood and brothers, Willie Fleming, Marshall “Bud” Fleming and Samuel “Sam” Fleming.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Riding for Jesus Cowboy Church, 890 N. Hwy 150, Pacolet, conducted by Pastor Mitch Trammel and Rev. Norman Bann. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens.

Robert Allen Jones

Mr. Robert Allen Jones CW3, PA-C (Ret.), born April 16, 1944, passed away after a long illness on August 26-2015 at Open Arms in Greenville, SC.

Mr. Jones gave his time and service to the Army as a Green Beret, Medical Officer and served as a Physician’s Assistant. He had been actively involved with the Girl and Boy Scouts of America and the Rotary Club where he served as president in Odessa, TX.

Mr. Jones is survived in mourning by his wife, Ann Boulware Jones; daughters, Ronda Robinson and husband Johnny and Robin Powser and husband Robert; grandchildren, Brittney and Cole Simms, Jaron and Audrey Powser, Sumner Robinson and Frances-Ann Robinson; three brothers, Randy Jones and wife Barbara, Walter Gene Jones and wife Dee and Ray Luther and wife Katie. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 31, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel, 310 W. South St., Union, SC 29379. Burial with Military Honors will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

A visitation and wake will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Sunday evening also at the funeral home.

Evelyn B. Lawson

Mrs. Evelyn Burgess Lawson, age 92, of 1809 Main St., Buffalo, widow of Manning Lawson, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, August 24, 2015.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Spartanburg, December 28, 1922, a daughter of the late Forest Manuel Burgess and Emeline Self Burgess.  She was a retired textile worker and was formerly employed with Torrington Co. Mrs. Lawson was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she was a member of the TEL Sunday School Class and the WMU Circle #3.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Lynne Lawson Fugate and husband M. Scott of Knoxville, TN; a grandson-in-law, Hal Reeves of Marietta, GA; three sisters-in-law, Livia Burgess, Ruth Lawson and Bernice Lawson all of Union; five great-grandchildren, W. Henley Fugate, Patrick Lawson Fugate, Lawson G. Reeves, Avery D. Reeves, and Carolina M. Reeves and a host of special nieces, nephews and friends.  Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a son, Douglas C. Lawson, a granddaughter, Leigh Reeves and five brothers, Toy Burgess, Howard Burgess, Wilbur Burgess, Manuel Burgess and Lawrence Burgess.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, August 28, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Lynn Ford and Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Wayne Heatherly, Chris Hicks, Lance Ratliff, Shane Mathis, Tim Rodgers and Gerald Burgess.

Joe Ann Holladaye

Mrs. Joe Ann Holladaye, age 83, of 1201 Old Buncombe Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Holladaye was born in Columbiana, AL, July 27, 1932, a daughter of the late Joseph and Clinie Lowery Holladaye.  She was retired from textiles having worked at both Inman and Enoree Mills and was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church.  Mrs. Holladaye was the last surviving member of seven children in her family.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Hood and husband Raymond of Gaffney; a son, Albert “Tommy” White of Union; six grandchildren, Shannon Moore of the home, Tracy Sinclair and Jackie Brawley both of Jonesville, Eugene Moore of Union, Lisa White Harris of Spartanburg and Brandon White of Birmingham, AL; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00PM Tuesday at the church prior to the services.

Joyce H. Abee
Union, SC


Mrs. Joyce Haney Abee, age 77 of 516 Toluca St., Union, widow of Vernon V. Abee Jr., passed away Friday, August 21, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Abee was born in Buffalo, March 16, 1938, a daughter of the late Milas McKinley Haney and Martha Dyer Haney.  She was a seamstress, formerly employed with Her Majesty and with Interiors by Connie in Union.  Mrs. Abee was a member of Victory Baptist Church where she was a member of the Women’s Ministry and was a former Sunday School teacher.  In 1991, she proudly received her high school diploma from Union High School.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was the last surviving of seven children in her family.

Surviving are a daughter, Peggy H. Hollingsworth and husband Tim of Union; six grandchildren, Jaime Strickland and husband Jeff, Brooke Boulware and husband Chris, Brianne Sanders and husband Scott, Alison Quaranta and husband Sean, Leigh Abee and Jeff Abee and wife Breanna; and five great-grandchildren, Aidan Strickland, Ella Sanders, McKinley Sanders, Emma Quaranta, and Amelia Abee. Mrs. Abee was predeceased by a son, Steven Lynn Abee.           

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.  Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mary Stepp Scales, age 83, of 1132 Meansville Rd., Union, widow of William J. Scales, Sr. passed away Saturday, August 22, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Scales was born in Union, March 30, 1932, a daughter of the late Ray Dewey Stepp and Pauline Willard Stepp.  She was retired from Torrington Co., and was formerly employed with Her Majesty of Union.  Mrs. Scales was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda S. Pardue and husband Gene of the home; a son, Jeff Scales and wife Eva of Union; a sister, Bea Vaughn of Belvedere, SC; a brother, Richard Stepp and wife Carolyn of North Augusta, SC; two grandsons, Lee Jefferson Scales and Terry Lane Scales both of Union and a great-grandson, Caden Lane Scales.  Mrs. Scales was predeceased by a sister, Vivian Gossett and two brothers, Carl Stepp and Ralph Stepp.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, August 24, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb and Chaplain Rick Brown.

Stanley Bruce Vaughan

Mr. Stanley Bruce Vaughan, 64, husband of Gay Callahan Vaughan of 137 Rainbow Lane, Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 20, 2015 at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Union, SC May 19, 1951, a son of the late John Earl Vaughan and Ernestine McBride Vaughan. He attended Jonesville High School and was retired from the textile industry. Mr. Vaughan was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Mr. Vaughan was a true example of perseverance. James 1:12: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of Life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” Stanley has received his crown and for that we are thankful.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Michael Vaughan and wife Kim Shrader Vaughan of Jonesville, Shane Vaughan of Union and Jonathan Vaughan and wife Charity Gossett Vaughan of N.C.; a brother, Buddy Vaughan and wife Kay; a sister, Karen Whitehead and husband Charles; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jonathan Vaughan.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Morris, Gary Brown, Jordan Callahan, Randall Morgan, Derrill Eaves and Eric Eaves. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Callahan, Jr, Jerry Gossett, James Shrader and Dwain Knighton.

Mrs. Mary Harris Vinson, age 80 of 211 Dogwood Dr., Gaffney, widow of James H. Vinson, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at her home after many years of declining health.  Mrs. Vinson was first married to the late Virgil Henry Harris.

Mrs. Vinson was born in Burnsville, NC, April 8, 1935, a daughter of the late James Blake Monroe and Melinda Faye Hyatt Monroe.  She was retired after 20 years in management with Kentucky Fried Chicken.  Mrs. Vinson was a member of Tanglewood Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Marty Grant of the home, Jeanette Raxter and husband Raymond of Boiling Springs and Zoeanne Smith and husband Rick of Enoree; two sisters, Dorothy Goodwin and husband Ted of Fayetteville, NC and Annie Ruth Britt and husband Kenny of Elizabethton, NC; a brother, Lewis Monroe and wife Mary of Columbia; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Vinson was predeceased by two children, five brothers and three sisters.

The family wishes to thank Mrs. Vinson’s caregivers, Mary, Barbara and Donna along with staff and nurses of Homestead Hospice for their care and concern of Mrs. Vinson during her illness.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Branch.

Mrs. Kathleen “Kat” Painter Benton, age 83, widow of Kenneth Benton of 121 College St., Union, SC., passed away Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Benton was born in Union, SC., the daughter of the late Monroe Lawson Painter and Dottie Mae Tessinear Painter. She worked at Union Mill, Milken plant and Conso Products.

Surviving are a daughter: Tammy Petrea and husband, Kent of NC; two sons: Jerry “Butch” Benton and wife, Rhonda and Wayne Benton all of Union; ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister Nuddie Mae Blackwell of Gaffney; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Benton was predeceased by two sons, two brothers and one sister.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb.

Visitation will be held after 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 19, 2015 at Mrs. Benton’s home, 121 College St., Union.

D.L. Brown

D L Brown, husband of the late Mary Elizabeth Jeter Brown, peacefully went to be with his Lord on August 15, 2015. Mr. Brown was born on April 2, 1924 in Jonesville, SC. He was the son of the late James Ferdie Brown and Pearl Comer Brown. He is predeceased by his brothers James Brown and LeFoix Brown, and sisters Avernelle Goins and Doris Fowler. 

D L Brown graduated from Union High School and attended Kilgore Junior College, the University of Chicago, the University of Texas and the University of Georgia. He served as a navigator in the US Navy for 4 years. 

Mr Brown faithfully and humbly served his Lord at Trinity Methodist Church, Saint Paul Methodist Church and First Baptist Church of Spartanburg and Cane Creek Methodist Church (Santuc). He served in various roles including Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, Chairman of the Deacons, Elder and Lay preacher.

He worked for many years as salesman for Burroughs Corporation. Upon retirement, he worked in various capacities, including Executive Vice President, for Union Federal Savings and Loans.

D L Brown leaves his unsurpassed spiritual legacy to his 2 surviving children, Suzanne Jeter Brown Merritt of Spartanburg SC and David Leslie Brown (Bunny) of Durham NC. Mr Brown adored and took pride in the accomplishments of 4 grandchildren John Raymond Flynn III (Lindsay) of Atlanta GA, Mary Suzanne Flynn Olsen (Bruce) of Belleville, IL, Daniel Levin Brown (Sasha) of Boston MA and David Lucas Brown of Chapel Hill NC. Mr Brown also delighted in his 2 great children, Gunter Van Olsen and Atticus Olsen.

Graveside services will be held at Jeter Cemetery in Santuc, SC on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation at the Jeter Chapel will follow the service. Pallbearers will be Wilbur Smith III, Thomas Gelwick, John Flynn III, Levin Brown, Lucas Brown and Carter Latham.

Mr. Steven B. Vaughan, age 44 of 700 Brown’s Creek Rd. went to be with the Lord, Friday, August 14, 2015.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Union, SC., September 23, 1970, a son of Bruce and Paulette Williams Vaughan. He was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and a 1988 graduate of Union High School. 

Surviving in addition to his mother and father are two daughters: Loren Vaughan and fiancé, Justin Wade and Laina Vaughan all of Union; a sister Beth Belue of Union; granddaughter Kinzli Wade; grandsons: Kamdyn Wade and Kingston Wade; Mother-in-law and father-in-law: Elaine and Oren Harvey of Jonesville; nieces: Brittany Belue and Katie Robinson; Nephews: Cody Belue, Matthew Robinson and Patrick Nadeau and a number of cousins.

Mr. Horace Vernon “Demo” Morris, age 81, formerly of 110 Fant St., Monarch Community, joined our Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at National Health Care Greenville.

Mr. Morris was born in Union, SC on May 15, 1934, a son of the late James Monroe Morris and Myrtle Johns Morris.  He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Monarch.  Mr. Morris protected the residents of Union County for a total of 12 years, serving with the Monarch Fire Department and also the City of Union Fire Department.  He was a baseball coach for Little League and Pony League with the Elks Club Team and had played softball with Monarch and Bethel United Methodist Church.  Mr. Morris had been a member of the SC National Guard for 11 years.  He was divorced, but his previous wife, Dorothy Harris Morris, continued to participate in the capacity of caregiver throughout his life alongside his daughter, Charlotte Ann Morris.

Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte Ann Morris of Union; a stepson, Randy Mel Howell of Union; two sisters, Ferol Kelly of Clinton and Lucille Putnam of Union;  two brothers, Raymond Morris of Monarch and James “Skillet” Morris of Union.

Graveside services with Firemen Honors will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ken Bogan.  Visitation will be held after the service.

Betty Medford Whitmore

Mrs. Betty Medford Whitmore, age 85, widow of Lloyd Whitmore of 127 Medford Loop, Buffalo, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Whitmore was born in Union, SC February 11, 1930, a daughter of the late Alvin R. Medford and Lady Lee Reaves Medford. She was a 1947 graduate of Union High School and retired from United Merchants-Buffalo and Union Plant after forty-eight years of service. Mrs. Whitmore was a lifelong member of Buffalo United Methodist Church where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher for the children, Vacation Bible School worker and a member of Rosa Roundtree Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two daughters: Dee Ann Boulware and Renae Whitmore; a son, Lee Whitmore all of Buffalo; a brother, Billy Medford of West Virginia; four grandchildren: Blake Boulware, Zavier Whitmore, Jake McNeace and Leah Whitmore; a great-grandson, Cameron Boulware and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs Whitmore was predeceased by a sister, Peggy M. Walker and a brother, Tony R. Medford.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Ron Towery. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Cody Harris, Dylan Rogers, Chip Chambers, Joey McNeace, Dylan Millwood and David Crisp.

Visitation will be held 1:30-3:00 PM Sunday in the church parlor prior to the service.

Mrs. Jeanne Hicks Sumner of Union, SC passed away the morning of August 13, 2015.  She was 85 years old.

She was born April 1, 1930 in Union, SC to the late James M. and Grace H. Hicks.  She retired in 1992 having worked as a secretary in the Family Court of Union.

Mrs. Sumner is survived by her son Marty (Dianne) Sumner of Pacolet; son Sammy (Lynne) Sumner of Union; daughter Susan Burch of Greenwood; five grandchildren: Christy (Mark) Hendricks of Hendersonville, NC, Ryan (Kristie) Sumner of Chesnee, Jamie Sumner of Union, Jason Sumner of Lehigh Acres, FL,  Matthew (Amanda) Sumner of Spartanburg, and Samantha (Vince) Burch of Greenwood; four great-grandchildren: Dalton, Olivia, Savannah, and Lucas; and a sister Kaye H. Kendrick.  Mrs. Sumner was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Jane H. Bradburn.  The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to her caregiver, Jenny Boggs.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 15, 2015, at Union Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will follow.

Mr. Boyd E. “Bubba” Sanford, age 55, of 848 Fairfax St., Spartanburg, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2015.

Mr. Sanford was born in Prosperity, SC on October 26, 1959 a son of the late Boyd W. Sanford and Dorothy McCullough Lovings.  He was formerly employed with J. Frank Blakely Electric.

Surviving are a son, Shannon Jones of Boiling Springs, SC; two granddaughters, Abby and Lilly Jones of Boiling Springs; three sisters, Kathy Garner of Jonesville, Myra Dameron of Jonesville, Phyllis Rogers of Pacolet; two brothers, Greg Sanford and wife Sonya of Jonesville and Richard Lovings and wife Laura of Union; a special nieces, Amanda Bouthsavong of Jonesville; and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Robert Jarvis.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Mr. Jimmy H. Robinson, age 74, husband of Margie Faucette Robinson of 257 Parks Farm Rd., Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Mr. Robinson was born in Union, SC September 26, 1940, a son of the late Paul Grady Robinson and Willie Blanche Foster Robinson. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a former member of the US Army Reserve. Mr. Robinson was formerly employed in Management with Milliken & Company for thirty-five years and retired from Mayfair Mills after eight years of service. He was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church where he was Vice Chair Person of the Church Council and had also served in all capacities of the church. Mr. Robinson has served as Past President of the Jonesville Jaycees; Past President of the Jonesville Band Boosters Association where he received an award for outstanding services. He also was selected as Outstanding Young Men of America Award for his outstanding professional achievements, leadership ability and exceptional service to the community.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-five years are a daughter, Crystal R. Bryant and husband Tim of Jonesville; a special grandson, Jameson Holt and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Robinson was predeceased by a brother, Keith Robinson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 14, 2015 at Jonesville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Al Seaburg, Tommy Cunningham, Steve Morrow, James Holt, Jamie Morris and Mark Sanders.

Melvin Dean Vess

Mr. Melvin Dean Vess, age 79, husband of Pat Keasler Vess of 123 Balsam Rd., Union, passed away Monday, August 10, 2015 at his home after a period of declining health.

Mr. Vess was born in Buffalo, March 12, 1936, a son of the late Frank and Jessie Mae Murphy Vess. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the South Carolina Dept. of Corrections.  A member of Morningside Baptist Church, Mr. Vess was a member of the Gene Adams Sunday School class, a choir member and a former Deacon.  He was also a veteran of the US Air Force.

Mr. Vess was a fun loving guy. He loved to cut-up with people and make them laugh.  He never met a stranger and he loved people.  He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Clemson Tigers. He would pull for the Gamecocks when not playing Clemson. He loved his family, his children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Tammy McCollum and husband Tommy of Jonesville; two sons, Barry Vess of Union and Larry Vess of Simpsonville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Vess was predeceased by four brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Aubrey Calvert. Burial with Military Honors will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be SFC Derek W. Vess, Mr. Thomas “Blake” McCollum,  Mr. Larry Leslie, Mr. Wyndle Kingsmore, Mr. Michael Fowler and Mr. Bill Davis.

Mrs. Elaine Gallman Thompson, age 63, widow of Carroll W. Thompson, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Pensacola, FL, October 6, 1951, a daughter of Nancy C. Gallman of Union and the late L.D. Gallman.  She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Limestone College and was retired from Union Co. Disabilities and Special Needs.  Mrs. Thompson was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are an aunt, Mary F. Prince; a great-aunt, Grace Lowen of Lexington, SC and numerous cousins.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, August 10, 2015 at Gallman Cemetery conducted by Rev. Jeff Farmer.

Mrs. Hattie Mae Seymore Moss, age 91 of 645 Rockwood Rd., Columbia, widow of Albert Moss, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Moss was born in Union, December 30, 1923 a daughter of the late Bernice Willard Seymore. She was retired from K-Mart Stores in Columbia and attended Woodfield Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Jones and husband Ronald, with whom Mrs. Moss made her home; a sister, Rosa Lee Hise of Spartanburg and a granddaughter, Tammy Soma of Columbia. She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Ann Moss, a grandson, Jimmy Soma and two brothers, Clyde and Robert Seymore.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, August 10, 2015 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jeff Phillips. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the chapel.

Mrs. Kathleen “Kat” Fowler Gault, age 89 of 685 N. Hwy 150, Lot 23, Pacolet,widow of Buddy Gault, 8 passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at her home.

Mrs. Gault was born in Union, SC May 14, 1926, a daughter of the late Elizabeth Fowler and was a graduate of Jonesville High School. She was a retired Textile worker and was a faithful member of New Hope United Methodist Church where she had been the oldest mother of the church.

Surviving are five sons: Dennis Gault of Clifton, Harold Gault of Pacolet, James Edward Gault and wife Tammy of Union, Ricky Gault and wife Kathy of Cowpens and Jerry Gault of the home; thirty-three grandchildren; fifty-one great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gault was predeceased by a son, Toney Gault and a grandson, Eric Zane Morris.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 PM Saturday, August 8, 2015 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

James S. Faucett

Mr. James Samuel “Jimmy” Faucett, age 83, loving husband and father, went home to be with the Lord on August 4, 2015. Born in Union Co., February 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Norman and Estelle Goings Faucett.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the United States Army where he received the National Defense Service Metal, the United National Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Meritorious United Citation and a Good Conduct Medal. Jimmy was a life time member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church and a retired textile worker for Milliken and Company. An avid farmer for all of his life, he sold produce at the Union County Farmer market up until his illness.

He is survived by his wife, Carol McBride Faucett, who so lovingly cared for him during his illness the past two years; his four children, Norman Eugene Faucette and wife Penny of Houston TX, Becky Wyatt and husband Rick of Spartanburg, David Faucett of Union, and Joye Dillard and husband Hugh of Fountain Inn.

Grandchildren are Carrie Faucette, Nathaniel Faucette, Patrick Faucette, Samuel Faucette, Farrah Wyatt, Tyler Wyatt, Lauren Wyatt, Mason Dillard and Grant Dillard. Great-grandchildren are Alexis Wyatt, Brooklyn Wyatt and Keeli Parker and a soon to be great-grandson. He is also survived by his brothers, Billy Faucett and wife Connie of North Augusta, Fred Faucett and wife Doris of Jonesville, and Lynn Faucett of Union. Sisters are Margie Robinson and husband Jimmy of Jonesville, and the late Evelyn Garner of Union and Shirley Sander of Jonesville. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Glenn Ribelin and Riley Hammond, Chaplain of Ark Hospice. Burial with Military Honors will be at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the church prior to the services.

The following grandson will serve as the active pallbearers, Mason Dillard, Grant Dillard, Tyler Wyatt, Nathaniel Faucette, Patrick Faucette and Samuel Faucette.

Mrs. Elsie Beard Weathers, age 94, of  Poinsett St., Union, widow of Jack Weathers, passed away, Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.          

Mrs. Weathers was born in Spartanburg Co., May 22, 1921, a daughter of Erastus and Fannie Beard.            

Surviving are daughter Linda Lanier of Union; seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Weather was predeceased by a son, Ronald “Moe” Weather and a daughter, Peggy Farr Gallman; six brothers and four sisters.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 7, 2015 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.

The family will receive friends at the graveside following the services.

Mrs. Mildred Graham Rogers, age 85, of 629 Rice Ave Ext, Apt 7B, Union, widow of Jack R. Rogers, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Rogers was born in Union, SC May 2, 1930, a daughter of the late Orin Graham and Clara Belle Lancaster Graham. She was a graduate of West Springs High School and retired from United Merchants – Buffalo Plant after forty years of service. She was a member of West Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Rogers was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Pat Osborne and husband Donnie of Seneca; a son, Tim Rogers and wife Teresa of Buffalo; five grandchildren: Alan Rogers and wife Lindsey, Melissa Miller and husband Craig, Laura Vaughan, Lisa Jordan and husband Phil and Chris Osborne; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by a sister, Cleo Bennett and a brothers, Nelson “Nub” Graham.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, August 7, 2015 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. William Felston Ridings, age 75, husband of Sue Maness Ridings of 112 Fairforest Heights, Buffalo, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Ridings was born March 30, 1940, a son of the late John William Ridings and Inez Dorman Ridings. He was retired from Hoechst Celanese after thirty-one years of service. He was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and Duncan Masonic Lodge #256. Mr. Ridings was also a Hejaz Shriner and a member of the Warriors Unit and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard-Pacolet Unit.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-six years are a son, David Ridings and wife Roxanne of Union; a grandchild, Hannah Rodriguez and husband Phillip; two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Mason; a sister, Janice Murray of Boiling Springs and a brother, Jimmy Ridings and wife Shirley of Gaffney. Mr. Ridings was predeceased by a son, Jeffery Wait Ridings and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Kevin Dalton, Rev. Ron Towery and Mr. Jimmy Maness. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.

Mrs. Adams was born in Union, SC, November 3, 1943, a daughter of the late Claudie Lancaster and Bertha Lawson Lancaster. She was formerly employed with Family Dollar, Smith’s Drug Store and retired from CVS. Mrs. Adams was a member of Welcome Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Julie Williams and husband Travis of New York and Lisa Carter and husband Keith of Union; two sons: John Adams and wife Jackie of Union and Jason Adams and wife Jill of Jonesville; two sisters: Helen Austin of Greer and Doris Addison of Union; two brothers: George Lancaster and James Lancaster both of Union; fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
