Arthur Lynn Phillips
Union, SC


Mr. Arthur Lynn Phillips, age 90, husband of Mary Cody Phillips of 311 Bruce O. Wilson Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Phillips was born in Union, SC March 9, 1924, a son of the late Herbert Phillips and Bessie Vincent Phillips. He was a 1947 graduate of Union High School and had attended the University of South Carolina. Mr. Phillips was the co-founder of Phillips Hosiery and was formerly the Plant Superintendent of Excel Hosiery Mill. Mr. Phillips attended Duncan Acres United Methodist Church where he had been a member of the Church Choir and Quartet. He was a former member of Palmetto of Statesmen where he sang in the Chorus and Quartet.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Kay Phillips Smith and husband Ricky of Columbia and Sally Phillips of Roswell, GA; a son, Charles “Mac” Phillips and wife Susan of Fletcher, NC; a sister, Erline Ayers of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren: Jeffrey Phillips Alan Smith, Hannah Kinney, Sophia Phillips-Rushing and Riley Phillips-Rushing; two great-grandchildren: June Kinney and Nash Kinney. Mr. Phillips was predeceased by a son, Lynn Phillips, a grandson, Austin Phillips, two sisters: Lucille Phillips Owens and Lena Grace Phillips Elliott and three brothers: Dan Phillips, Judson Phillips and Solomon ST Phillips.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Greater Union Church conducted by Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Phillips, Don Cody, Wayne Todd, Philip Cody, Jeter Cody, Jr and Brett Burgess.

Visitation will be held immediately following the committal service in the Greater Union Church.

Helen Louise Gowan

Mrs. Helen Louise Tucker Gowan, age 82 of 1023 Meansville Rd., Union, widow of Charles Richard Gowan, Sr, passed away Friday, August 29, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Gowan was born July 31, 1932, a daughter of the late Rev. Jonas Thomas Tucker and Annie Mae Gibson Tucker. She retired from Milliken & Co – Monarch Plant and was a member of New Life Baptist Church. Mrs. Gowan was also a member of the Bonham Club and the Clemson Extension.

Surviving are two sons: Charles Richard Gowan, Jr and Fiancee’ Patty Nave and Alan Lee Gowan  and wife Pamela all of Union; three grandsons: Stacy Gowan, Daniel Gowan and David Gowan all of Union; six great-grandchildren: Daniel Gowan, Brianna Gowan, Charlie Gowan, Reese Gowan, Riley Gowan and Bella Gowan; four sisters: Katherine James of Spartanburg, Betty Seagars and husband Victor, Mary Alice Carter and Lena McConnell and husband Foster all of Cowpens; a brother, Alfred Tucker and wife Thelma of Cowpens and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 Sunday, August 31, 2014 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Shannon Faulkner and Rev. Daniel Blackwell. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Bud Carter, Ryan Carter, Johnny Ward, Jimmy Hughes, Bill James and Ralph Arthur.

Visitation will be held 1:30-2:45 PM Sunday in the church prior to the service.

Mrs. Judy Lynne Cameron Gill, age 50, wife of Charles Norman “Charlie” Gill, of 140 Longview Dr., Lockhart, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Gill was born in Chester, May 9, 1964, a daughter of Brenda Miller Cameron of Union and the late Bobby Joe Cameron.  She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and USC-Union. Mrs. Gill was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.  She worked in retail for a number of years, having owned her own business and was formerly manager of Bath and Body Works of Union.  Mrs. Gill was one of the first female firefighters in Union County, having volunteered with Buffalo Fire Department.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a daughter, Ashley Lynne Gill Castle of Lockhart; a brother Edward Scott Cameron and husband Francis Rualo of Pleasant Hill, CA; three grandchildren, Cameron Lynne Gill, Charles Joe Scott Gill, and Logan Brian Castle.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, August 29, 2014 at Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Bishop and Rev. Steve Lemons.  Burial will follow at Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Chester.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Manual Grady “Preach” Harris

Mr. Manual Grady “Preach” Harris, age 90, of 208 Pasture Dr., Union, widower of Helen Bentley Harris, passed away, Sunday, August 24, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Harris was born in Union on July 29, 1924 a son of the late James Wallace Harris and Nan Gault Harris. He was formerly employed with Cone Mill – Carlisle Finishing Plant and was a Beef Farmer. Mr. Harris was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.  He was an avid race fan and enjoyed watching wrestling.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Jean H. Inman and husband Clarence “Bo” of Union; three sons, Verlyn “Buddy” Harris and wife Kathy of the home, Kenneth Wayne Harris and wife Cheri, and James Wallace Harris and special friend, Betty Jean Kirby all of Union; two sisters, Ada Adams and Dorothy Morris both of Union; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Glen Ribelin and Rev. Carl Harris.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Randal Wright, Phillip Waddell, Josh Sinclair, Jimmy McKeown, Tommy Adams, and Jamison Moss.  The following are asked to form the honorary escort, J.T. Adams, Jimmy McCormick, Ted Adams, Charles Adams, and Leland McKelvie.  The Staff and Nurses of Gentiva Hospice are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Harris will be carried to the home, 208 Pasture Dr., Union, at noon Tuesday, August 26, 2014 where the family will also receive friends.

Mr. Harold Dean Lane, Sr., age 75, of 161 Lane Rd., Union, widower of Rebecca Williford Lane, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mr. Lane was born in Union, May 4, 1939, a son of the late Bert and Annie Belle Hyder Lane. He was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing and was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Sherri L. Franklin and husband Phillip of Union; a son, Harold Dean Lane, Jr. and wife Lisa of Fountain Inn; a sister, Ada Hall of Union; five grandchildren, Lee Franklin and wife Heather, Kacie Davis and husband Lee, Courtney Franklin, Mitch Lane and Shannon Lane and one great-grandson, Lucas Franklin. Mr. Lane was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline L. Smith and Mable L. Adams and seven brothers, Ernest, Guy, Paul, Floyd Leo, J.B, James and Hamp Lane.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis and Rev. Lee Franklin. Burial will be in the Hawkins-Lane Cemetery.

Mr. Lane’s nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Douglas Ned Farr

Mr. Douglas Ned Farr, 90, of 100 Churchill St., Union,  passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

A lifelong resident of Union County, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Laura Vanderford Farr. He is also survived by his son Donald Ned Farr and wife Pamela, granddaughter Lauren F. Daggett and husband Brett, grandson Matthew Guy Farr and fiancé Nicole Bonelli, and great-grandsons Aiden Brett Daggett and Wiley Ned Daggett, all of Lakeland, FL. Mr. Farr is also survived by his sister-in-law Dolly V. Mahaffey of Spartanburg and many nieces and nephews.

Born July 8, 1924, Ned was the son of the late Marvin and Kate Brown Farr. He was predeceased by brothers, Ellis, Harry, and Ralph Farr, and sisters, Zora F. Wade, Lucille F. Boulware, Eloise F. Hook, and Kathryn F. Lewis.

A lifelong member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Mr. Farr served in many capacities as long as his health permitted, including Chairman of the Administrative Council. He was the owner of Union Seed, Feed, & Supply, and was a former director for Union Federal Savings & Loan Association, Union Soil Conservation, and Farm Bureau. He attended Lockhart School, Union High School, and Cecil Business College.

The family wishes to thank Blue Ridge Hospice, especially Lindsey Liner, Stacie Briggs, and Kellie Allen. Also special thanks to Trudy and Jim Smith and Dennis and Vicki Farr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, August 25, 2014 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Donna Eidson and Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.  

Pallbearers are Matthew Farr, Brett Daggett, Jim Smith, Dennis Farr, Richard Kloskey, Bowman Still, Marnie Hook, Edward Farr, Andy Farr and Terry Tracey. Members and past members of the Mary Ruth Vanderford and Laura Farr Sunday School Classes are asked to sit together.

Ben Clifford Ivey, Jr.

Mr. Ben Clifford “June” Ivey, Jr., husband of Jeanette Bradley Ivey of 352 Browns Creek Church Rd., Union, passed away, Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ivey was born in Union, SC., June 8, 1928, a son of the late Ben Clifford Ivey, Sr. and Anna Harris Ivey. He attended Kelly-Pinckney High School and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church. Mr. Ivey was employed at Milliken and Company-Monarch Plant until his retirement. Following retirement he worked at Paradise Home Center. Married for sixty-six years, he was devote and loving husband to Jeanette. Mr. Ivey left a legacy of faith in God, love for his family and friends and hard work. His philosophy was to put God first and foremost and the blessing would flow. He was always known for his love of the outdoors, piddling in his shed, keeping his yard cut and helping “mama” (Miss Jeanette) with her flowers. Our daddy and papa will be forever missed and loved. He passed the torch to his children grandchildren and great grandchildren setting an example for us to follow the remainder of our lives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Ben C. Ivey, III and wife Lynn of Union; two daughters, Cathy Vassey and husband Jerry and Lee Anne Page and husband Larry all of Campobello; Six grandchildren, Mark Ivey and wife Kelly of Union, Stacy Kirkland and husband Toby of Gilbert, Clay Vassey and wife Heather of Columbia, Rev. Brad Vassey and wife Carrie of  Sharon, Leslie Duncan of Campobello, and Lindsey Black and husband Chris of Chesnee, ten great grandchildren, four sisters, Rudelle Morris, Anna Lou Tipton both of Union, Barbara Summer of Greenville and Goldie Jordan of Florida. Mr. Ivey was predeceased by one sister, Etrulia Moore and 5 brothers, Arthur Ivey, Will Lindsey Ivey, Leroy Ivey, Ned Ivey and Quinton Ivey.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale, Rev. Tommy Mann and Rev. Brad Vassey.             Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ivey’s grandson will be active Pallbearers: Mark Ivey, Toby Kirkland, Clay Vassey, Brad Vassey, Jeff Duncan and Kadin Ivey. The Adult Men’s Sunday school Class at Philippi Baptist Church are asked to ensemble at 10:45 to form the honorary escort.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at Philippi Baptist Church.

Mr. Paul Elliott White, age 95, of Methodist Oaks Nursing Home, Orangeburg, SC, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014.

Mr. White was born in Jonesville, SC on December 16, 1918 a son of the late Isaac W. White, Sr. and Bess Johnson White. He was a former member of Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a niece Mary Barteet Nelson and husband Haywood of Hollywood, SC; a nephew, Ronald F. White and wife Lilia of Landrum, SC; and many other nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.  Mr. White was predeceased by five brothers, Isaac White, Jr., Fredrick J. White, Francis Y. White, Ralph White, and Morris White.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 16, 2014 at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey. Visitation will be held immediately following the service.

Mr. Donald Kent “Don” Stephens, age 63, of 134 Riley Rd., Buffalo, passed away Monday, August 11, 2104 at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Stephens was born in Union, February 13, 1951, a son of the late Aaron O. and Martha Holt Stephens.  He was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Technical College.  Mr. Stephens was a retired construction worker.

Surviving are his wife, Lynn Sullivan of the home; two sons, Chad Stephens and wife Donna of Union and Kent Stephens, Jr. and wife Gloria of Buffalo; a step-daughter, Chasity Ferrell and husband Tim; a step-son, Josh Sullivan a brother, Cecil Stephens all Union; three grandchildren, Dusty Stephens, Adelynn Ferrell and Creighton Ferrell.  Mr. Stephens was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Stephens.

Graveside services will be held 5:00 PM Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Mrs. Ruby Lee Woolen Palmer, age 90, of 1742 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, Union, widow of Will Hames Palmer, passed away, Sunday, August 10, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Union, SC on October 3, 1923 a daughter of the late Sandy Alexander Woolen and Willie Pearl Crocker Woolen. She was a graduate of Union High School Mrs. Palmer was an active member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church as long as her health permitted, where she taught the Beginners Sunday School Class for many years and was a member of Faye Teague Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two daughters, Myra Palmer McClure of Pacolet and Anne Palmer Brock and husband Gene of Union; a brother, Lewis Woolen and wife Kathaleen of Union; four grandchildren, Mark Vinson and wife Heather of Union, Leigh Anne Arthur and husband Zachary of Union, Lisa Sanders and husband Chris of Pacolet, and Kimberly Davis and husband Tim of Union; eleven great-grandchildren whom she dearly loved, Ross and Isaac Arthur, Logan and Blake Vinson, Bailey, Reid and Christa Sanders, Cayla, Hannah, and Peyton Gregory, and Carmen Davis.  She was predeceased by three brothers, Oren Woolen, Paul Woolen, and Elvin Woolen.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Bob Cato and Rev. Ron Gaddy.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Sterling Austin Bennett, age 90, widower of Cleo Graham Bennett of 687 Gaffney Hwy., Jonesville, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Rev. Bennett was born in the West Springs community of Union Co., June 29, 1924 a son of the late Stering P. and Lunette Lancaster Bennett. He attended North Greenville College and Wofford College and was a retired Baptist minister.

Surviving are a son Larry Bennett and wife Lynda of Jonesville; two sisters, Mildred Sinclair of Buffalo and Carolyn Jackson of Union, two brothers, Jim Bennett of Pauline and Ralph Bennett and wife Dianne of Roebuck; three grandsons, Richard Bennett and wife Ellen, Greg Bennett and Jeffrey Bennett; a daughter in law, Brenda Bennett and a granddaughter-in-law, Kellie Bennett both of Spartanburg; a sister-in-law, Mildred Rogers of Union; a special friends Aileen Quinn of Jonesville and five great-grandchildren. Rev Bennett was predeceased by a son, Lynn Bennett and a grandson, Brian Bennett.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, August 11, 2014 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Greg Black and Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 William Marvin "Bill" Blackwell, Jr.

Mr. William Marvin “Bill” Blackwell, Jr. age 74 of 208 Bennett St., Union, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg.

Mr. Blackwell was born in Union Co., March 18, 1940, a son of the late William Marvin Blackwell, Sr. and Edith Carter Blackwell. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Wofford College.   After moving to Texas, Mr. Blackwell earned a Bachelors degree in Engineering from the University of Texas.  Mr. Blackwell was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the US Air Force.

Surviving are a brother, Kenneth Blackwell and wife Cindy of the home; a special niece Carolyn Blackwell of the home and numerous cousins.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 4:00 Pm Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz.

Florence Edelyn Rogan Little 
Jonesville, SC


Mrs. Florence Edelyn Rogan Little, age 86, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Little was born October 23, 1927 in Greeleyville, SC a daughter of the late Edelyn M. and Thomas S. Rogan.  She graduated from Greeleyville High School and attained a BA degree from Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs, N.C.  Mrs. Little furthered her education at the University of South Carolina, Furman University, and Winthrop University.

Mrs. Little began her teaching career at Hebron High School in Williamsburg County, at Clover Junior High School, at St. George High School, at Harleyville-Ridgeville High School, at Kelly-Pinckney School and at Jonesville Elementary School.  During her years of schoolwork she was a member of the National Education Association, South Carolina Education Association, Palmetto Education Association, South Carolina Association of Librarians and South Carolina Library Association.

In 1953, she married the late Warren N. Little and became the proud parents of three daughters.  Edelyn married the late Donnie Moore and they have one daughter, Carrie.  Eugenia married Bruce Taylor and they have one daughter Stacey married to Justin Hopper.  Susan married Mike Scales and they have a daughter Emily married to Marc Sutton and a son Matthew married to Kristi F. Scales.  They were also blessed with two great-grandchildren – Wylie Scales and Isabella Sutton.  Mrs. Little is also survived by a brother William D. Rogan and his wife Jackie. She was predeceased by a sister, Judy R. Henson and a brother, Thomas S. Rogan.

The Little family attended New Hope United Methodist Church where Mrs. Little was the Choir Director, President of the U.M.W. as well as other capacities.  She was a member of the Fair Forest Chapter of the D.A.R. and the John Hames Chapter of U.D.C.

Funeral services will be held at 6:30 PM Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Keith Gault, Tim Gregory, Bill Rogan, Stan Rogan, Walter Rogan and Lesesne Scott.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the committal services.
