Elizabeth Austin Miller
Jonesboro, GA

Elizabeth Austin Miller, 76, died Monday, April 20, 2015 surrounded by family and friends.

She leaves her husband of over 50 years, Lamar Allen Miller, her sons Mark and Tommy Miller, her brother Ted Austin, three grandchildren Sammy, Madison and Pierceson; one great-granddaughter Riley and many close friends.

Born on January 30th, 1939 and raised in Union, S.C., the oldest child of Edward and Helen (Holcombe) Austin, she spent her youth there before marrying Lamar Miller of Dawson, GA, moving to the Atlanta area and becoming a lifelong Georgia resident.

In her early years Mrs. Miller was a dedicated daughter and sibling to her sister Pat (deceased) and brother Ted. She came from a musical family and when she discovered piano it was life altering. She played drums in The Union High-School Marching band where she graduated in 1958. And she became an expert pianist bringing music and happiness to many appreciative audiences from churches, recital halls and many veterans groups in later years.

As a wife, mother and grandmother she was magical. Protective and loving she always found a way to find humor in everyday life. She would work all day but never fail to sing a happy song or perform an expert version of the twist or “the shag” for delighted children and their friends. Her home was always open and The Miller household is the place all the kids from the neighborhood gathered. Her attitude was always “the more the merrier”.

Later having moved to Jonesboro, Mr. and Mrs. Miller along with friends Cecil Mullins and Joe McDonough started a small chapel gathering at American Legion Post 258, called The Chapel for God and Country, which was the first in the nation. The organization and ministry grew to become a meaningful contributor to the spiritual life of many, especially catering to veterans and their families. Mrs. Miller was also an active member of the local DAR chapter.

Elizabeth dedicated her life to the happiness and wellbeing of others. Her faith was her main source of strength. She was loved by everyone she touched and was a source of happiness and light in this world.

A Memorial Service will be held in her honor Thursday, April 23rd at the Jonesboro, GA American Legion Post 258 at 1PM.

Additionally a service will be held this Saturday, April 25th at 2PM in Union, SC at Holcombe Funeral Home.
