Charlene Howell Nance

Mrs. Charlene Howell Nance, age 60, wife of Jerry Nance of 593 Vanderford Rd, Union, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Nance was born in Union, SC September 20, 1952, a daughter of the late Maurice Howell and Margaret Vaughan Howell.  She was a graduate of Lockhart High School, USC- Union and USC-Upstate, Mary Black School of Nursing. Mrs. Nance was a Registered Nurse with Union Mental Health. She was an active member of Philippi Baptist Church where she served as organist for many years. Mrs. Nance was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Paige Nance of the home; two sons: Jerry Dewayne Nance, Jr of the home and Brett Clary of Gaffney; three step-daughters: Melissa Wyatt, Karen Morris and Lori Benton all of Gaffney; a sister, Marsha Fuller of Union; two brothers: Neal Howell of Union and Charlie Howell of Shelby, NC.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale, Rev. Tommy Mann, Rev. Shawn Murphy and Rev. Robert Scott. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jackie Parks, Terry Bentley, Butch Carter, Alfred Belk, Eddie Hughey and Adam Howell.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Lucille V. Harris

Mrs. Annie Lucille Vaughan Harris, age 96, of 913 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, widow of William Douglas Harris, went home to be with her Lord peacefully, Monday April 29, 2013.

Mrs. Harris was born in Union, September 25, 1916, the oldest of six born to the late William Smith Vaughan and Maude Palmer Vaughan Stines. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Tanglewood Baptist Church. Mrs. Harris was active in her church, where she had taught Sunday School for many years and also had served as church clerk. She was a most unselfish person and always enjoyed doing for others.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Pridemore and husband Earl, and Peggy Branch and husband Robert; one son: James “Jert” Harris all of Union; a sister: Mildred Jolly of Union; five grandchildren: Tammy Jones, Robin Belue and husband Jimmy, Rickey Pridemore and wife Tammy, Renae Duncan and husband Jimmy, and Sherry Brown and husband Jerry; eight great-grandchildren: B.J. Brown, Jason Belue, Brandy Brown Waddell and husband Jason, Matthew Jones, Phillip Jones, Casey Duncan, Megan Pridemore and Claire Pridemore; four great-great-grandchildren: Kinsley and Katlyn Waddell, Caley and Emma Brown all of Union, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harris was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary Virginia Harris, a sister, Opal Stines and three brothers, Arthur, Isaac and Earl Vaughan.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Branch and Rev. Charles Flowers. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Belue, Matthew Jones, Phillip Jones, William Jolly, Ted Adams and Tony Harris.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 2:15 PM to form the honorary escort, employees and nurses of Blue Ridge Hospice, Wayne Harris, Buddy Harris, Wallace Harris, Terry Harris, Charles Adams, Buddy Vaughan, Stanley Vaughan, Howard Wells, Dennis Roark and Randy Howell.

Visitation will be held 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM prior to the services at the church.

Frances B. Nelson

Mrs. Frances Virginia Bailey Nelson, age 74, of 105 Lula Green Rd., Union, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013 at the home of her son.

Mrs. Nelson was born in Union, July 31, 1938, a daughter of the late George B. And Ethel Young Bailey. She received a Bachlor’s Degree from York Technical College and retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing. Mrs. Nelson was a life long horse lover.

Surviving are two daughters: D. Beth N. Barlett of Swannanoa, NC and Virginia G. Nelson of Union; two sons: C. James Nelson and Marvin Douglas Gist “George” Nelson both of Union; three sisters: Dolly Leitner of Greenville, Mabel Bailey of Inman and Ann Sanders of Union; five granddaughters and 2 grandsons and numerous great-grandchildren. Mrs. Nelson was predeceased by a sister, Louise Trakas and two brothers, Fred Richard Bailey and James Robert Bailey.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Private services are being scheduled by the family.

The family will be at the home of her son, C. James Nelson, 119 Lanier Lane, Union, SC.

Ginger Elaine Parkins

Mrs. Ginger Elaine Ochiltree Parkins, age 61, wife of Jeff David Parkins of 4098 Parkins Rd., Sharon, SC, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013.

Mrs. Parkins was born in Union, SC June 8, 1951, a daughter of the late Willie Chalk Ochiltree. She attended Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Dana Elaine Parkins of York; a son, Marty Reid Parkins (US Coast Guard) of Cleveland, OH; four grandchildren: Paige Elaine Parkins of Union, Randall Reid Seaford of York, Jeffrey Reid Parkins of Hickory Grove and Sara Beth Miller of the home; a step-grandson, Michael Lee Miller of the home; a sister, Sarah Harris of Union and two brothers: Larry Ochiltree of Augusta, GA and Mac Ochiltree of Buffalo. Mrs. Parkins was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Ochiltree.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Craig Marshall. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery.

Johnny W. Ivey
Union, SC


Mr. Johnny Wallace Ivey, age 76, husband of Sandi Grady Ivey of 646 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Ivey was born in Union, SC August 11, 1936, a son of the late Emmett Byrd Ivey, Sr and Thelma Morris Ivey. Mr. Ivey was a graduate of Jonesville High School and for numerous years worked as a Law Enforcement Officer with the City of Union, Union County and had also served as Police Chief of Jonesville. He later retired from Belue Trucking. Mr. Ivey had served in the South Carolina National Guard - Union Unit; a member of Show & Shine Car Club and was an avid farmer. He was a member of Browns Creek Baptist Church and attended Victory Baptist Church. Mr. Ivey was a loving son, who at an early age took the responsibility of his brother and sisters after the illness of their father. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother who was greatly loved and respected by his family. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to his wife Sandi of twenty-five years are his children: Ronnie Wallace and wife Angie, Donna S. Ivey, Margaret I. West and Brian Wishert all of Union; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two sisters: Thesis I. Tollison and Nancy I. Stepp and her husband Robert; a brother, Byrd Ivey and wife Donna and daughter Emily all of Union and his beloved pet, Buffy. Mr. Ivey was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Charles Tollison.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Monday, April 29, 2013 at Victory Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David Burrell and Rev. John Lee. Burial will be in Brown’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ronald Arthur Mummery, Sr.
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Ronald Arthur Mummery, Sr., husband of Florence Alwardt Mummery of 107 Muriel Drive, Jonesville, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013.

Mr. Mummery was born in Freedom, NY March 19, 1933, a son of the late Carl Mummery and Dorothy DeWitt. He was a retired Auto Mechanic and was a Veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Mummery loved fishing, playing his guitar and singing western songs. He also loved baseball, going to New York to see everyone and getting together with family.

Surviving in addition to his wife Florence of fifty years are four daughters: Mary Lou Hathaway and husband James of Geneseo, NY, Laura Jean Krenzer and husband Jeffery of Bliss, NY, Loretta Lynn Walsh and husband Gerald of Pacolet and Diane St. Onge and husband Maurice of Hudson, New Hampshire; three sons: Ricky Mummery and wife Laura of Shanendoah , PA, Ronald Mummery, Jr of Union and James Mummery and Finance’ Nikki Grabowski of Arcade-Yorkshire, NY; three sisters: Shirley Rider of Bliss, NY, Sylvia DeGroff and husband Herbert Jr. of Leicester, NY and Beverly Herrell of Tampa, FL; nineteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Mummery was predeceased by three sisters: Marie Rosier, Nadine LaLande and Phyllis Stack and three brothers: Norman “Timothy” Mummery, Stanley Mummery and Donald Mummery and three grandchildren: Patrick Mummery, Joshua Mummery and Katrina Nelson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Warsaw, NY.

William Keith Roark
Union, SC


Mr. William Keith Roark, age 61, husband of Gerri Hammond Roark of 1103 Old Pump Station Rd., Union, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at Spartanburg Regioal Medical Center.

Mr. Roark was born in Union, SC November 23, 1951, a son of the late Brady Roark and Rachel Harris Roark. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Spartanburg Community College. Mr. Roark received his BA from Georgia Poly Tech. He was owner of Roark Professional Land Surveying. Mr. Roark was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church where he was a member of the church choir, taught Sunday School and was actively involved with his church. He was a member of the S.C. Surveying Society where he served as Vice President.

Mr. Roark is survived by his wife, Gerri of the home; two sons: John of New York, his girlfriend and two children and Daniel of Tennessee, his wife and three children; three step-children: Rhonda Dehaai and son of Union; Phillip Rothrock of FL, his wife and son; Jodie Brown of Boiling Springs, her husband and two sons; one sister, Cornelia Ford of Union, her husband and grandson; one brother, Dennis Roark of Union and his daughter; two aunts, one uncle and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be John Roark, Daniel Roark, Joey Edwards, Joseph Edwards, Will Cooper, Dustin Brown, Shane Brown and Mike Howell.

Visitation will be held in the church following the committal service.

Ms. Cherri Ann Hope, age 52, of 116 S. Sixth St., Lockhart, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at her home.

Ms. Hope was born in Union, March 25, 1961, a daughter of David Lee Hope and Nancy Brannon Hope of Union. She was employed in retail sales and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two daughters, Selissa Melton and husband Scott of Lockhart and Nancy “Beck” Crawford of Anderson; five grandchildren, Brandon Lee Parker, Gavyn Cade Gregory, Drew Harrison, Caleb Harrison, and Justin Harrison; a special friend, Christopher Ireland of Chester; and her pet companion, Rascal. Ms. Hope was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Grady and Nellie Brannon, and her paternal grandparents, Rufus and Vera Hope.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Bishop and Rev. Tommy Hope. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Lee Brannon, Chris Brannon, Dale Inman, Rodney Inman, Allen Horton and Charlie Scruggs.
Ms. Hope will be carried to the home, 116 S. Sixth St., Lockhart, Friday where the family will receive friends.

Clyde Grady Burgess
Formerly of Union


Mr. Clyde Grady Burgess, age 77, husband of Peggy Addis Burgess of Daniel Island, SC passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. Mr. Burgess was formerly of Union.

Mr. Burgess was born in Union, SC November 4, 1935, a son of John Burgess and Erlene Horne Burgess. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and had served in the S.C. National Guard-Jonesville Unit for eight years. Mr. Burgess was a successful insurance agent with Atlantic Coast and New South Insurance Company. He was also owner  of Clyde Burgess Construction Company. Mr. Burgess was a faithful member of Jonesville Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Church Clerk, Sunday School Teacher and the Building/Grounds Clerk. He was also a member of the Prudence Masonic Lodge # 139.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Nancy Burgess Gunter and husband Richard Gunter of Charleston; two grandchildren: Noelle Gunter Molnar and husband Lt. Stephen J. Molnar, III , US Navy, Guam and Gabriel Jordan Gunter of Charleston; four sisters: Wilhelmina Blume of Lexington, NC, Dorothy Dupree, Ada Turner and Terry Radford all of Jonesville and a brother, Lloyd Burgess and wife Diane of Jonesville.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, April 26, 2013 at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ned C. Owings
Union, S.C.


Mr. Ned Carroll Owings, age 72, of 210 E. Hillcrest Ave., Union, passed
away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at his home. Born May 22, 1940 Ned was the son of the late Ruby G. Owings, Sallie G. Morris and Clifford G. Morris.

A life-long learner, Mr. Owings attended Union High School, graduating
with his beloved class of 1958. He then went on to receive a BS from
Clemson University (being a member of IPTAY over 50 years and a
contributor to the Clemson Fund). He went on to receive M. ED and
Educational Specialist Degrees from Western Carolina University. He also
took graduate and post graduate courses at Boston University, Francis
Marion University, and the University of South Carolina and USC Union.
Mr. “O” discovered his love of teaching in 1964 when he began teaching
at Timmonsville High School, followed by 15 years at West Florence High
(elected Teacher of the year) and at South Florence High School. His
fondness for his students was only exceeded by his love for those
students who served on the yearbook staffs at Timmonsville and West
Florence High Schools.

Mr. Owings also served as Science Coordinator for Florence One School
District. It was his honor to work with Administration, other
coordinators and Science teaches at the Elementary, Middle and High
School levels. His consulting skills allowed him to work with science
teachers and administrators in Anderson School District Two. He also
served as an Adjunct Professor in Science Education for the College of
Charleston, Francis Marion University and the University of South Carolina.

He was selected to be a member of the Governor’s Math and Science
Advisory Boards, (SC)² Board of Advisors, President of the SC Science
Supervisors Association, Prentice Hall Review Committee for Biology
Textbook, State Testing Committee, State Science Textbook Committee,
Member of Elementary Science Teacher for Writing of Model Lessons,
Member of Writing team for SC Science Standards Revision and SC Science Standards Competencies, Review team for Biology Standards, Science BSAP Committee, Pee Dee Education Foundation Math/Science Committee, Pee Dee HUB Advisory Board, AAAS (Assessment Item Analysis Team) and Science BSAP Committee.

Mr. Owings was an active member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church as long as his health permitted. He served in the choir and as Chairman of the Trustees and Financial Chairman.

He is survived by special cousins Ralph Owings and Frances Owings May as well as a number of other cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Duncan
Acres United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz, and Rev. Bob Vinson. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jimbo Whitney, Steve Moss, Mark Moss, Steve
Mullinax, Dewey Yarborough, and Paul Williford.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 PM Saturday to

Mrs. Shirley Faucett Sanders, age 71, wife of Kenneth H. Sanders of 451 Bobby Faucett Rd., Jonesville, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, April 20, 2013.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Kelton, March 8, 1942, a daughter of the late Norman William Faucett and Helen Estelle Going Faucett. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Cecil’s Business College in Spartanburg. Mrs. Sanders retired after 28 years with Sloan Construction and was a member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she was also a member of the Choir. Mrs. Sanders was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Kimberly S. Holt and husband James; a son, K. Mark Sanders and wife Donna all of Jonesville; a sister, Margie F. Robinson and husband Jimmy of Jonesville; four brothers: Billy Faucett and wife Connie of N. Augusta, Jimmy Faucett and wife Carol, Fred Faucett and wife Doris all of Jonesville, and Lynn Faucett of Union; four grandchildren, Hannah Sanders, Drew Sanders, Jameson Holt and Jacob Holt; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sanders was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Hoyt Sanders, Jr., and a sister, Evelyn F. Garner and her husband Donald Garner.

Mrs. Betty Goforth Blackwell, age 84, widow of Grady Blackwell of 206 Haile St., Jonesville, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, April 20, 2013.

Mrs. Blackwell was born in Gaffney, August 1, 1928, a daughter of the late William Wyatt Goforth, Sr. and Ollie Mae Gossett Goforth. She was retired from textiles and was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Lynn Blackwell and wife Kim of Jonesville; two grandchildren, Peyton Blackwell and Taylor Blackwell both of Jonesville; a brother, Frank Hill Goforth of Boiling Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Blackwell was predeceased by three sisters, Mildred Goforth, Emily Goforth and Mary Martin; and five brothers, Aleck Goforth, Donald Goforth, Harry Goforth, Carlisle Goforth and William W. Goforth, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, April 22, 2013 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Dale Roger Neal

Mr. Dale Roger Neal, age 56, husband of Gloria Malpass Neal of 140 Haney Rd., Buffalo, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Mr. Neal was born in Blackwater, VA September 9, 1956, son of Wilma Gilliam Neal of Buffalo and the late Leonard Howard Neal. He was a 1972 graduate of Union High School and was employed with Cone Mill- Carlisle Finishing. Dale was an active member of Victory Baptist Church and loved taking care of people in his community by being a handyman and also loved gardening. Dale was a loving and devoted son, husband, father and brother.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Dawn Neal of Buffalo and Michelle Pilgrim and husband Sammy of Greenville; a granddaughter, Samantha ; a sister, Marlene Neal of Columbia; two brothers: Tony Neal and wife Susan of Union and Eric Neal and wife Tammy of Fountain Inn; a mother-in-law, Nell Malpass of Union; several nieces and nephews and a special companion, his pet Maltipoo, Roxy.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Victory Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David Burrell and Rev. J.R. Carrigan.

Ms. Belinda Darlene Johnson, age 44 of 104 Mill Avenue, Union, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Johnson was born in Union, SC September 8, 1968, a daughter of the late Mamie Lou Foster Kendrick. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are two sons: Shaw Johnson and Mitchell Benton; a sister, Trina Vinson all of Union; a fiancé’ Robbie Todd Leonard of the home; a grandson, Ethan Johnson; a special niece, Tosha Smith and fiancé’ Chris Childers; two nephews: Dillon Smith and wife Jessica and son Jaden Smith and Michael Howell; a cousin, Beth Wilkins Broom and husband Bud of Union and a very, very special friend, Elizabeth Ledbetter and husband Darren and son, Daniel Canupp.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family is at the home of her sister, Trina Vinson, 200 Spring Street, Union.

Mr. Daniel E. Vaughan, age 91 of 109 Catherine Street, Union, widower of Elizabeth West Vaughan, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Union, SC July 9, 1921, a son of the late Wallace Vaughan and Edna Scales Vaughan. He was retired from Milliken & Co - Excelsior Plant. Following his retirement, he was a part-time employee of Holcombe Funeral Home for many years. Mr. Vaughan was a Veteran of the US Army 95th Infantry Division, having served in World War II. He fought with Gen. George C. Patton in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Vaughan also retired from the South Carolina National Guard as a Major. He was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #75; was a Hejaz Shriner and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Vaughan was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class and the Merry Methodists.

Surviving are two brothers: Charles O. “Charlie” Vaughan and wife Shirley of Union and Harold Vaughan and wife Dannie of Spartanburg; nieces and care givers, Kitty Vaughan and Cindy Hulon of Union and four other nieces: Cathy Gorman and husband Dr. Richard Gorman of Jupiter, FL, Della Ebersole and husband Steve of Marathon, FL, Amy Vaughan of San Francisco, CA and Dannie Lou Vaughan of FT. Mill, SC; two nephews: Jay Vaughan and wife April of Chesnee and Eddie West of Chester; several great-nieces and great-nephews and a special companion “Heidi”. Mr. Vaughan was predeceased by a brother, Wallace Vaughan, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Mr. Timothy Allan McCall, age 54, husband of Barbara Smith McCall of 306 Osborne St., Union, passed away suddenly, Friday April 12, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Mr. McCall was born in Union, November 6, 1958, a son of the late Thomas and Jeanette Lawson McCall. He was a 1977 graduate of Union High School and formerly employed with Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Angela Renea McCall and friend James of Union, and Jessica Caldwell and husband Mesha all of Union; six grandchildren: Taylor Worthy, Eric Kershaw, Aleah McCall, Jameson Lott, Emily Lott and Serenity McCall.

Mr. McCall was predeceased by a brother: Thomas “Tuck” McCall.

Mrs. Little was born in Union, April 12, 1920 a daughter of the late Roy and Viola Farr Proctor. She attended Kelly Pinckney High School and was retired from Hamricks in Jonesville as a seamstress. Mrs. Little was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Roy Little and wife Brenda, and Ted Little all of Jonesville; two sisters: Wilhelmena Littlejohn and husband Bill of Jonesville and Annie Bell Carpenter of Asheville, NC; a sister-in-law: Sarah Proctor of Aiken; a brother-in-law: Bobby Williams of Hilton Head; grandchildren: Deborah Little Snapp and husband Richey, Robbie Little and wife Patti, Angie Horne and friend Michael Putnam, Rob Little and friend Debbie, Wanda Little Adamson and husband Bobby and Billy Little; great-grandchildren: Ashley and Zach Snapp, Cody Adamson, Shayna Little Kirby and husband David, Adam Horne, Chris, Josh, Tabitha and Colby Little; great-great-grandchildren: Faith Paige Kirby and Lyla Grace Turner. Mrs. Rogers was born in Union, SC October 6, 1936, a daughter of the late John Clark Briggs and Mary Jane Briggs Ivey and was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving are two sons: Fred M. Rogers, III of Union and John Phillip Rogers of Daytona, FL; an adopted daughter, Teree Rogers of the home; two sisters: Mary Frances Moore of Union and Doris Sellars of Macon, GA; two brothers: John Harold Briggs and Roy Briggs both of Union; a grandson raised in the home, Fred Marvin Rogers, IV and eight other grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by a step-father, Fred Ivey.

Mrs. Rhinehart was born in Whitmire, SC February 24, 1925, a daughter of the late George and Clara Propes. She was a homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle of God Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Deloris Phillips and husband Dewain of the home, Rose Silvers and husband Ricky of Whitmire and Marie Rhinehart of Spartanburg; two sons: Jimmy Rhinehart of Saluda and Donald Rhinehart of Union and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rhinehart was predeceased by a son, Troy “Pee Wee” Rhinehart, Jr.

Mr. Marion Brown Fant, Sr., age 80, husband of Bessie Wishert Fant of 101 Culp St., Union, passed away Thursday morning, April 11, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Fant was born in Union, October 10, 1926, a son of the late Bothwell and Ruth Meador Fant. He was a retired partner of B&H Motors Ford, Mercury dealership and was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church since 1959. Mr. Fant served his church as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent, also having taught Training Union and served on the churches Grounds and Maintenance Committee. He was a member of the Union Civitan Club and was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit. Mr. Fant was and avid lifelong farmer and gardner.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, M. Brown Fant, Jr. and wife Judy and Terry Rodger Fant and wife Ellon all of Union; a brother, Joe Rodger Fant of Aiken; three sisters, Sara Gregory of Chester, Ann Williams of Jacksonville, FL and Virginia McCroskey of Dayton, OH; four grandchildren, Heather Vinson and husband Mark, Angelia Fant, Cameron Fant and wife Misty, and Christopher Fant; four great-grandchildren, Travis Marshall Blake Vinson, Logan Vinson, and Conner Fant; Catherine Williamson, Mr. Fant’s personal nurse, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Fant was predeceased by two brothers, Earl Meredith Fant and Grace Rutland.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca “Shiryl” Robinson and husband William “Mike” Robinson of Jeffersonville, KY; two grandchildren, Jason Robinson of Lexington, KY and Windy Robinson of Jeffersonville, KY and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Knox was predeceased by a sister, Charlie Mae Kelley.

Mr. Lancaster was born in Union, October 13, 1933, a son of the late Roy and Carrie Lee Lamb Lancaster. He was a retired cabinet maker and a member of West Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Grace Pryor and husband Jimmy, and Kathy Lancaster all of Spartanburg, and Julie Adams and husband Dean of Jonesville; two sons, Craig Lancaster, and Leon Lancaster and wife Candi all of Jonesville; a sister, Agnes Bogan and husband Johnny of Jonesville; a brother, Kenneth Lancaster and wife Martha of Spartanburg; a sister-in-law, Jean Lancaster of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including special nieces, Cindy Witek and Debbie Eagle. Mr. Lancaster was predeceased by a son and his wife Dennis Wayne and June Lancaster, a grandson, Phillip Michael Lancaster and two brothers, Charles Lancaster and wife Joyce and Joe Lancaster.

Mrs. Evelyn Fowler Roe, age 90 widow of Herschel Roe, formerly of Anderson and York, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Emeritus at Skylyn Place in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Roe was born in Union, October 14, 1922 a daughter of the late Paul and Lillie Fowler. She was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and Anderson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. On October 31, 1984, Mrs. Roe retired from her life long career as a nurse. She was employed by Anderson Memorial Hospital as Nurse Manager of the OB-Maternity floor. At the time of her retirement, she was the longest consecutively employed employee with 47 years of service. Mrs. Roe was an active member of First Baptist Church of York and was a former member of Boulevard Baptist Church in Anderson.

Surviving are a daughter, Annette R. Langford and husband Steve of York; a sister, Helen F. Garner of Union; a granddaughter, Taylor Langford of Myrtle Beach; several nieces and nephews including, Nanci G. West and husband Johnny of Port Orange, FL, Shane Garner of Jonesville and Christopher Hucks of Daytona Beach, FL. Mrs. Roe was predeceased by a nephew, Jimmy Garner.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, April 12, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel in Union conducted by Rev. Trey Doyle. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Friday prior to the services at the chapel.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM also on Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Anderson. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the burial.

Mr. Jeffrey Lynn “Jeff” Mason, age 45, husband of Tracy Gibson Mason of 2153 West Springs Hwy, Jonesville, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013.

Mr. Mason was born in Union, March 30, 1968, a son of Charles C. “Sonny” Mason, Jr. and Sandra Howell “Sandy” Mason of Jonesville. He was 1986 graduate of Jonesville High School and a 1999 Graduate of Clemson University. Mr. Mason was employed with DHEC, working in the Union and Spartanburg offices and also worked with Oilmen’s Equipment in Spartanburg. An active member of Greater Union Church, he taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class and was a member of the Praise 150 Band. He also was a supporter of Union Christian Day School, volunteering his time with many of their projects. An avid out-doorsman, he enjoyed fishing, farming and hunting, and was a member of the American Treeing and Feist Association. Jeff was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband and father who treasured his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Hannah Elizabeth of the home; a brother, Jon B. Mason and wife Nicole of Roebuck; two nieces, Kensley Marie Hill of Union and Avery Browning Mason of Roebuck; nephew, Jon Wells Mason of Roebuck; his in-laws, Thomas and Pat Gibson; a grandfather-in-law, Monroe Smith; a sister-in-law, Leslie Gibson, all of Union; special friend, John P. Faris, Jr. of Spartanburg; and many other loving extended family members and friends. Mr. Mason was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Charles and Ruth Mason; his maternal grandparents, Browning and Marie Howell; and his grandmother-in-law, Dottie Smith.

Mr. Wood was born in Union, September 14, 1937, a son of the late Fred Marshall Wood and Nellie Rhodes Wood Free. He was retired from Spartanburg Dodge and was formerly owner and operator of Fairwood Lanes in Union. Mr. Wood is a 16 year veteran of the US Navy.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Cheryl Smith and husband Donald of Union and Tylin Wood of the home; a son: David Wood and wife Laurie of Colorado; a step-daughter: Cammie Jordan and husband Foster of Chapin; two step-sons: Russell Williford and wife Kathy of Union and Richie Gault of Spartanburg; a brother: John Ray Wood of Inman; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Noah B. Green, Jr., age 84, husband of Frances Williams Green, of 106 Culbreath Heights, passed away, Thursday, April 4, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Green was born in Cocke, Tennessee on January 1, 1929, a son of the late Noah B., Sr. and Otie Toby Green. He was a Veteran of the US Army and US Air Force and was retired from the South Carolina National Guard - Union Unit. Mr. Green was a member of Crestview Baptist Church where he was a deacon and was retired from Torrington Company Tyger River Plant. He was an avid fisherman, bowler as long as health permitted, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 55 years are two sons, James Larry Green and wife Marcia of Springfield, VA and Jerry Williams and wife Susan of Union; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Astor and Herman Green and a sister, Dixie Horne.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Crestview Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Josh Freeman. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Bobby Brewington

Mr. Bobby “Monkey” Brewington, age 73 husband of Carolyn Tingle Brewington of 351 Terry Dr., Union (Monarch Community) passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Brewington was born in Union, December 19, 1939, a son of the late Guy and Bertha Duckett Brewington. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing. Mr. Brewington was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Angela Bright and husband Melvin; a brother, Pete Brewington all of Union; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mr. Brewington was predeceased by two sons: Tim Brewington and Curtis Brewington, four brothers and 1 sister.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Childers.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services.

Harold L. Lawhon
Union, S.C.


Mr. Harold Legare Lawhon, age 96 of 813 W. Main St., Union, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Lawhon was born, July 21, 1916 in Mars Bluff, SC a son of the late Laurie Samuel Lawhon and Olivette Smith Lawhon. He was a graduate of Union High School and a 1938 graduate of Clemson College. A veteran of the US Army, Mr. Lawhon served in the Asian Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a supervisory engineer during the construction of the Savannah River Plant reactor. Mr. Lawhon also had worked with the NCDOT and also was self-employed. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Mr. Lawhon is survived by four nephews: Cameron Lee and wife Emily of Wallace, NC, Richard Lee and wife Lee of Myrtle Beach, David Lee and wife Sandy of Salisbury, NC, and Eddie Lee and wife Debbie of Wake Forest, NC. He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Lee and Eleanor Taylor.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, April 8, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the graveside.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.


Mary Ellen Lawson
Union, SC


Mrs. Mary Ellen Lawson, age 66, wife of Donald R. “Ducky” Lawson of 215 Arthur Blvd Union, SC passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Union, SC November 18, 1946, a daughter of the late Flonnie Jeffcoat. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a homemaker.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: Scott Lawson and wife Wendie of Woodruff and Josh Lawson and wife Wendy of Union; three grandchildren: Graham, Molly Grayson and Lauren; three brothers: Rick Jeffcoat and wife Phyllis of Simpsonville, Larry Jeffcoat and Mark Jeffcoat both of Union and a nephew, Richie Smith and wife Holly of Spartanburg. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a sister, Jeanie J. Smith.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Steven Owensby.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Wentz and the staff and nurses of Hospice Care of S.C. for their loving care of Mrs. Lawson and her family during her illness.

Mr. Jeremy Chase Lancaster, age 23, husband of Pamela Millwood Lancaster of 830 North Hwy. 150, Pacolet, passed away Sunday March 31, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lancaster was born in Union, June 28, 1989 a son of Paula Kerr Lancaster of Pacolet and Charles Lancaster of Jonesville. He was formerly employed with W.N. Kirkland of Spartanburg and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife, mother and father are a son: Jaycub Lancaster; two daughters: Saydee and Karmyn Lancaster all of the home; a sister: Christi Tweed; a brother: Christopher Kelly Lancaster both of Jonesville; his maternal grandparents: Richard and Rosalyn Kerr of Jonesville. Mr. Lancaster was predeceased by his paternal grandparents: Charles, Jr. and Joyce Lancaster.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, April 5, 2013 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton. Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Memorials may be to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 W. Faris Rd., Greenville SC 29605-4277.

The family is at the home of his mother, 121 Brewster St., Pacolet and at the home of his father, 1815 Mudbridge Rd., Jonesville.


Tammy Thompson Beason

Tammy Thompson Beason, age 52, of Rutherfordton, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Hospice House. A native of Union, SC, she was the daughter of Carrie Brewington Thompson and the late Jackie E. Thompson Sr. Tammy was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1979, attended Winthrop College and was a former employee of Mastercraft Fabrics. Tammy was an avid gardener and volunteer, and was a member of Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her mother, her memory will be cherished by her husband, James Samuel Beason of the home; daughter Ashley Nicole Beason of the home; brother Jackie E. Thompson, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Barry Keith Thompson.

A Celebration of Life will be held 3:30 PM Friday, April 5, 2013 at Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church with Dr. Don Scofield officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:30 at the church prior to the service.

Mr. Albert W. Ochiltree, Jr., age 65, widower of Brenda Parks Ochiltree, of 882 Gaffney Hwy., Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Ochiltree was born in Union, March 31, 1948 a son of the late Albert Woodrow Ochiltree, Sr. and Beulah Scales Ochiltree. He was retired from Conway Freight as a truck driver and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Dawn Spencer and husband Randy of the home, Jill Crocker and husband Russell of Santuck and Kristi O. Moss of Union; a sister, Brenda Thompson of Monarch; five grandchildren: Chance Gregory and wife Allison of Walterboro, Matthew Ochiltree and Nicholas Moss both of Union and Kayleigh Spencer and Kinsleigh Spencer both of Jonesville; one great-grandchild, Neveah Lynn Going. Mr. Ochiltree was predeceased by a sister, Ann Loid.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, April 5, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Dr. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Sherry Graham Sizemore, age 44, wife of Tim Sizemore of 191 Haney Rd., Buffalo, went home to be with her Lord, Monday, April 1, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Sizemore was born in Union, January 3, 1969, a daughter of the late Jackie Keith Graham and Gerald Eugene Graham and wife Judy of Union. She was a graduate of Union High School and received a degree in cosmetology. An active member of Putman Baptist Church, Mrs. Sizemore served as a Sunday School teacher and also had served on various committees within the church. Sherry was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister and aunt.

Surviving in addition to her husband, father and step-mother are two daughters, Whitney Sizemore Smith and husband Phillip of Buffalo and Jordan Ashley Sizemore of the home; two sisters, Crystal Graham Adams and husband Steven of Tryon, NC and Tammy Graham Phillips of Buffalo; a step-brother, Jeff Culberson and wife Diane of Louisville, KY; her in-laws, Paul and Judy Whitehead; a sister-in-law: Marlene Rhinehart and husband James; a brother-in-law, Paul Jerry Whitehead, Jr. all of Union; several nieces and nephews including special nieces and nephews: Jacqueline Adams, Aaron Adams, Olivia Phillips, Chasity Rhinehart, Brooke Rhinehart, Dusty Rhinehart, Michaela Whitehead, Macy Whitehead and Jeri Lynn Whitehead.

Mr. Jeff David Ingle, age 32, of 220 Bobo St., Union, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Ingle was born in Columbia, March 21, 1981, a son of late David Ingle, Sr., and Temaris Moss Belue Howell. He attended Broome High School and was formerly employed with Gestamp South Carolina. Mr. Ingle was previously married to the former Ginger Blackwell.

Surviving are a son, Austin Ingle and a daughter, Abby Ingle both Cowpens; his step-father, Ronnie Belue of Union; his sister, Angie Thomas of Taylors and a half-sister, Teressa Ingle of Woodruff.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Mrs. Sadie Robinson Boulware, age 81 of 559 Sardis Rd., Union, widow of Ross F. Boulware, Jr., passed away Monday, April 1, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Boulware was born in Union, June 4, 1931, a daughter of the late Wallace Earl Robinson and Annie Fowler Robinson. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the Meador Oil Company. Mrs. Boulware was a member of Greater Union Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Lorene W. Bevis, Patsy B. Willard and companion Tommy Watkins and Beth Walker all of Union; a sister, Azalee Blackman of York; four grandchildren: Vicki Caldwell, Scott Willard both of Union, Chad Sinclair and wife Melissa of North Augusta and Jennifer Chapman and husband Andrew of Union; six great-grandchildren: Daytona Caldwell, Dayton Caldwell, Josh Willard, Connor Sinclair, Reagan Chapman and Karlie Chapman; a special niece Doris Ann Murphy of Saluda and special friends, Marie Busbee and family of Union. Mrs. Boulware was predeceased by two sisters: Gladys Ivey and Betty Ashe; a brother, Earl Robinson and a special friend, Joe Wilson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 3, 3013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Roger Estes, Dr. John Cody and Rev. John Lee. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Sinclair, Ralph Meade, Walter Whitlock, Ken Palmer, Monty Joe Bogan, Sr. and Kenneth Adams.
